Speaker 1 (00:01):
Big plays, bold opinions of football. The All Sport Breakfast
with Adam Cooper, News talks Envy. Up past seven Here
on the All Sport Breakfast, it's round three Old Football's
National League around the country. We'll preview the women's and
men's games featuring Wellington teams over the next week. While
of the show, let's go to the women's competition. Hannah

(00:21):
Wignail back with us. Morning to you, Hannah, good morning,
well no team two from two from this. So I guess, Hannah,
when you look at a table like that, even though
the shortened format would make you think, you know, there
might be some runaway teams early, it's it's pretty evenly poised,
isn't it.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
I was thinking about an overarching summary of where things
are at, and it's actually too early to tell how
teams are faring. We're getting little glimpses, but the league
placings at the moment, it's just about goal difference. It's
not necessarily about one team outperforming the rest.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Indeed, no, Well, it's looking pretty good obviously. The top
ranked Wellington team is Patony one from two, the same
winning record as the Wellington Phoenix team in this competition
as well. So let's look to the weekends games, Hannah.
It starts down in christ Church this afternoon. The Phoenix
Academy team have the trip down to meet Canterbury United.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yep, the Phoenix are currently sixth in the table. As
we've said, whatever that means. They've had one win against
Potoni last week two nil, and they've had a loss,
losing four to one to Southern United in the first round.
Canterbury are sitting ninth in the table. They've got one
point in the first round. They lost a whopping eight
nil to Auckland United, which you could perhaps put down

(01:37):
to first game nerves, but Canterbury is certainly a team
we need to see a few more games from before
we can begin to predict how they'll go a week
in week out. Last week they drew it home against
Western Springs. It was a six goal thriller. We know
that weather played a huge part in that game. We
also know that the Phoenix have some really skillful wingers

(01:58):
that were really showed against Botoni. They loved taking on
defenders one on one, and that includes all of their players,
including their center back who I've forgotten her name, but
she was driving and driving once the Phoenix were fully
in the Tony half. So yeah, it's hard to call

(02:20):
this one. I think it'll be a close game, but
perhaps Phoenix may clinch.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
It all right, So we will look out for that one.
A twelve thirty kickoff down in christ Church tomorrow where
we will see the rest of the Wellington based teams
play Wellington United at home up against the Eastern Suburbs,
another match for them at home. Hannah.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, so United at eighth in the league, one draw,
one all with Sudden United last week and one loss.
They lost to Western Springs five to four in the
first round. In the first round they flipped Auckland and
they cwed their way back into the game. They showed
a lot of fight and determination, but they were unable
to pull it back completely. Five to four is a

(02:59):
huge scoring game, and so you know, both of those
sides have a lot a lot of potential and scoring
ability within them. Focusing on defense tightening up, particularly on
fast counters, it will be really important for United. The
draw against Southern well it was a testament to Southern's defense.
I believe Diamond's finding it really hard to create meaningful attacks,

(03:22):
particularly in the first half. They're playing Eastern Suburbs this week.
They're sitting third in the table on three points, but
they've only played one game which they won nine now
against Central and so I don't think we've really seen
them tested in the In the Northern Women's Premier League,
they finished third in the table on forty four points,

(03:42):
which is quite an admirable position. Of the twenty one
games they played in the normal league, they won fourteen.
There won't be an easy side to play against, and
United will be feeling frustrated and disappointed with the results
they've got to date. My advice would be to forget
about the results and remember what you're good at and
build confidence that way. Focusing on the results won't really

(04:04):
help with a bit of writer's block that we're seeing
with United at the moment, So don't add to the
pressure by trying to trying to shovel win and take
a step back and remember how excellent they are in
both attack and defense.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Indeed, all right, and then wrapping up the Wellington action,
but Tony who of course had that great first up
when a loss last weekend and they've got another trip
up to Auckland to take on Western Springs.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, one win, one loss, they'll be stoked with that.
They're sitting seventh in the table. As you've said, the
highest placed Wellington team Western Springs. They're sitting second in
the table on four points. They finished fourth in the
Northern Women's Premier League on thirty three points, middle of
the table and a mix of results for them during

(04:49):
that league. Western Springs struggled with the conditions away from
home last week against Canterbury as I've mentioned, a three
all draw.

Speaker 2 (04:56):
But they have a.

Speaker 3 (04:56):
Talented side and a lot of depths on the bench.
Familiar name for me, Micah has recently joined the squad
and she used to play at Setun She's an excellent
right back, has a clear head and it is incredibly
hard to get past. Last week but Tony had a
hard game against the Phoenix reserved reserves. They seem to

(05:19):
be on the back foot for a lot of the game.
They definitely had some counters and they had it in them,
but their approach will need to kind of develop and
build and they'll need to learn from some of how
they're playing against some of these tougher sides. I know
the team and the club have a lot of belief
in them, but they are underdogs in this league. They're

(05:39):
away from home this week. It could be tough and
for a lot of players new to the National League,
the travel, the pre match arrangements, it might take them
a while to find their feet to get into the game.
If they don't concede during this period of finding their feet,
then they could come away with a draw up in Auckland.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
All right, So well, he's hoping that theying some success,
whether that's a point, whether that's a win. Where we'll
wait and see. Hannah, great to catch up on the
third round of this competition. You have a great weekend
and we'll chat Agan soon.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Let's go to the Men's National Football League to preview
round three. Dale Warburton is with us morning.

Speaker 2 (06:15):
Dale, Yeah good, how are you going?

Speaker 1 (06:17):
I'm good? Thank you And a quick check at the
table of this means competition before we get into it.
Wellington Olympic continuing their strong year two from two so
far alongside Birkenhead United and christ Church United at the
top of the table. Western Suburbs one win, Mirramar Rangers
one win and the Phoenix Reserves team looking to still

(06:37):
get on the board after two losses. Let's go to
the games Dale featuring Wellington team starting this afternoon. David
Farrington Park and Auckland United to have the trip down
to meet Mirramar Rangers.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Yeah they do. I guess soir Mirrama had a win
and a draw, so sorry. They've had a win and
a loss so far. They lost four to two on
the on the trip to christ Church last weekend against
Christich United. They were up two one at halftime thanks
to our goals to Jordan Lamb and Sam Gates, but
conceded three second half goals to lose down there, and

(07:10):
they've kind of put them in the middle of the
pack alongside I guess Auckland United as well. They're coming
off by so interesting to see how that plays out
for them. They had opening round lost to Chrish each
night and also by two goals, which could indicate it's
a pretty a pretty close game between these two sides.
You'd think a loss for either side would probably make
it pretty tricky to make the top two and the final.

(07:32):
I think to out for about ten games. For a
ten games season, you probably need about twenty points, so
seven games ago you'd probably need about six of them,
so they'd be a pretty tall order fifth for the
team that loses this afternoon.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
All right, so kick off at the same time. Western
Suburbs traveling the other direction. They're going up to Auckland
Cbitia Street for Auckland City.

Speaker 2 (07:53):
Yeah, team's coming off very contrasting results from last weekend.
Resting Suburbs bounce back from the opening three no loss
to Autally Pump Coastal Spirit eight nil. Callen Annoyan picked
up four goals subbition, but Ginger got two himself and
then Ryan Harris and Noah Tippany club got one. Eh.

(08:14):
To have a very comprehensive when they're in the National League.
Verywhere as Auckland City they had a three lost burking
Head in their first game. They had Orlando Thoughts in
thirty minutes, so he'll be missing for that fixture. But
likewise you'd think Wests might be a little bit of
favorites going to that one perhaps, but will be pretty

(08:36):
interested to game see how that goes up.

Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yeah, And also contrasting campaigns so far, Phoenix Reserves looking
for that first one against unbeaten christ At Uniteds.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, that'll be are looking to bounce back from their
lost to Auckland SC last weekend they went down to one.
I guess this week they'll welcome back their coach Chris
Greenacher who's been away with the under twenties team in Chile,
and that probably a handful of players back from that
World Cup as well. Remains to be seeing how many
slots straight into team after the travel probably midweek from

(09:05):
back from chilea chross ritual. They're looking pretty good so far.
The two wins open their account over Merrimur Rangers in
Auckland United, so you think that would be pretty strong favorites.
Trailing up here to Wellington.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Yea indeed, and then wrapping up the games featuring Wellington teams.
Another two clubs of contrasting fortunes Wellington Olympic heading down
to christ Church's Coastal Spirit.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah. Olympic are one of three teams. Was two wins
to open the national league that are pretty tight to
on one over Western Springs, so they'll be one of
the favorites coming end of the end of the round.
But they were one all down before jack Henry sinkly
Are pounced on a defensive mistake to even that before
half time and then Adams super scored in the ninetieth
minute to get the win. For well, I think so

(09:49):
be stoked with that as a mention in case of
Spirit that lost twice now b can Head in the
around and then that thumping by West. It's kind of
hard see them doing being anywhere near the top come
the end of the season. But you know, with a
big loss it could be a little bit of a
banana skin for Olympic if they don't take the game
too seriously after they could be wins. So how you

(10:10):
think Olympay would be pretty strong favorites for that one
as well?

Speaker 1 (10:13):
All right, that one down in christ Church two o'clock tomorrow.
Appreciate your time as always. They'll have a good weekend
of football watching and we'll chat next weekend.

Speaker 2 (10:20):
Yeah, we'll do our check this in for more from
