Speaker 1 (00:00):
And Jason Puticker's and Studio to talk bowls as always.

Speaker 2 (00:03):
Well Inteer Jason morning, Adam.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Well, busy weekend for the bowls seen last weekend, wasn't it.
The weather sort of played ball, especially on the Sunday
looked like a wonderful occasion for the local bowls community
to be part of the big Transpawnsman event.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Look, the weather turned it on, which was great to see.
So we got through all the games. There were some
very good bowls played. Results maybe didn't go with the
way we would have liked, but you know, the team
certainly competed.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Quite well across the whole weekend.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Great. What are some of the sort of the highlights
or takeouts from the weekend.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yes, as we mentioned last week, they went down five
mil in the first test on Friday, but some close
battles there and the second test they went down three
to two, so battled back well with wins to the
Open Women and the Development men. And then in the
third test on Sunday, same schooline again three two down

(00:57):
with winds coming for the Power Team and the Development Woman.
So you know, most of the teams had to win
across the weekend, which is great to see, couldn't quite
get it all together unfortunately.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
So Australia retained that trends Tasman.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
But I guess the highlight when we look at the
overall results, the woman squared their series nine games apiece
and went down by three differential shots over eighteen games.

Speaker 2 (01:22):
It's pretty close, but the highlight.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Was definitely the Powers who won their event again drew
at nine all but had a bit of differential so
took home their trophy, which was great to see. But
I think the big news that came out of last
week was the retirement of Val Smith, the most capped
blackjack twenty plus years of bowls at national level, six
hundred and sixty seven matches, nine world medals, including two

(01:49):
world titles and four Commonwealth medals.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
A true legend in the sport. Again, I've been around
a while.

Speaker 3 (01:55):
I remember when she first came onto the scene as
a junior about nine ten, ninety six, ninety seven. I
think she's been playing three or four years at that stage,
and she's come on to be a great athlete in
our sport.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Special and special that people here we're able to watch
that that sort of final weekend before she called time
is it. I mean, I know you said last week
twenty seventeen, I think was the last time New Zealand
won this this Trans Tasman series or give will take
a year or two other side. Is that a sign,
just these continued results, that Australia is genuinely a better
country at bowls at the moment or do you think
we've just been unlucky on certain tournaments.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
It's a numbers game, right, They've got a lot more
to choose from.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
And when we look at their development team that they
bought over, she called Australia, you know equally all those
people could be in that top team. So it's a
numbers thing. But you know again, it's about getting it
right on the day, putting it all together. And as
we can see, we can compete, we can get the results,
it's how do we get them all at the same time?

Speaker 2 (02:56):
All right?

Speaker 1 (02:56):
We'll watch the Space Commonwealth Games next year of course
as well, which will be interesting. I know a couple
of other results to look back on, Chase. We got
Bowls three five and the Tartannucky Women's Furs as well.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Yes, a bowl Street five Premier event was played on
Thursday and in the semifinals, we had nine I beating
Stakes Valley seven five, four to three to win two
seats to do so in this this is like our
T twenty for balls, right, It's a short format, quick games,
two five in sets and a tiebreak of required. Tawa

(03:29):
beat Mirima again two sets to nil, winning those sets
seven to two and seven to four. So in the
final from nine oh we had Robbie Bird, Sam Allison
and Kenny Critchlow up against the Tawa team of Gavin McLeod,
Pat Povey and Paul Hassel, and nine I went on
to win that one again two sets to nil, seven
to six in the first set and four to two

(03:50):
in the second set. So now nine I will go
forward and represent Wellington in a playoff against the winners
from Capiti they win if they can win that match,
so I'll go off to the net finals later in
the year. So good luck to that team. And as
you mentioned, the Taranicky Fours women's fours came to an
end and making the quarter finals, which great efforts was
a team from nine oh that was Pat Dixon, Leoni Goff,

(04:13):
Anne Robinson and Kathy Cross and they went down twenty
one to twenty in the quarterfinals, so close game there, all.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Right, very good and locally we're back in Ed's the
club this weekend.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Couple of rounds ahead, yeah, the last two rounds of
round robin playing inter club. So in the men currently
we've going to got six points separating third to seventh,
which is as close as its ever been this competition.
Twenty four points per round available for those teams that
are playing two rounds because some games already been played,

(04:43):
so anything can happen from here. We don't know who's
in the top four, we don't know who's getting relegated
at this stage, So a big weekend of balls ahead.
Two in round eighth for the men. Lyle Bay have
already played nine OZ. That's one match that's been played
ahead of time and nine I won that match. Seventh
Team seven Island Bay play Stakes Valley Victoria hosting Tawa

(05:05):
Plymoton against Mirramar and my match of the morning for
the men Patoni Central versus Johnsonville.

Speaker 2 (05:10):
Patoni Central just outside the top four.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Johnsonville, they've got one foot in the top four, but
if Patoni Central won any chances of getting in, they
probably want to win that game in the morning. Then
in round nine in the afternoon stakes, Valley host Plymoton
Patony Central will be playing nine. I so this is
the only game of the day they I think they
need one or two wins one when they've got one

(05:36):
hand on the top spot from the round robin, which
means they'll probably host the final. Tarwa versus Johnsonville Island
Bay hosting Victoria the match of the afternoon. For the men,
Mirramar versus Lile Bay. This is nine versus eight starting
the day, but Lile Bay have played an extra game
already and this the winner of this probably secures this

(05:59):
spot for next year. The loser potentially is going down.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
Okay, all some decisive games right through the day in
those two rounds. What about the women's compas it has
tight and then that leader board as they count down
to things moving.

Speaker 3 (06:11):
Yeah, absolutely, I mean it's quite similar to the men,
six points separating third to sixth. So again, a lot
to play for over the day for these teams. Again,
we've had some teams play games in advance. That's because
we got the a Row Mary Bowls on at the
moment and so clubs were given the opportunity to play
these games ahead of time so their players can go

(06:32):
off and enjoy themselves up in Gisbon. So in round
eight Johnsonville versus Silverstream already being played, with Silverstream winning
that game fourteen to seven. We've got Plymouton hosting Stokes Valley,
Tony Central against Upper Hut, Miramar versus Tawa, and the
match of the morning for me is Victoria versus nine
I Victorian fourth spot, so they were looking to secure

(06:56):
their spot in the playoffs in tenth places we've spoken
about most of the season and if they want to
stay up, this could be quite a.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Crucial game for them.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
Then in round nine in the afternoon, Johnsonville against Tar
has been already played ahead of time, Johnsonville winning twenty
two to one. Tony Central hosting Victoria, Plymoton play silver Stream,
Upper Hut against Stakes Valley, and again Stakes Valley have
got eyes on the prize for hosting the women's final.
They need a couple of wins out of that game

(07:28):
and I think they'll get the finals hosts. But match
of the afternoon nine to a again tenth starting the
day against Miramar, who are eighth starting the day again.
One of these teams losers and they could be well
going down.

Speaker 1 (07:44):
Great all right, well, good to have some games that
will dictate how things look in the coming weeks. Jason,
great to chat again. We'll do it again next Saturday.
We'll have some of those results through the afternoon here
on News Talks EB as well. We'll see you next week.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Thanks Adam for more from News TALKSB.
