Speaker 1 (00:00):
And begin with our Bowls report as always here on
the All Sport Breakfast and Bowls Wellington board member Rod
Leech is back with us. Morning to you, Rods and
well nice to have that worst of the weather out
of the way.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
I'm sure for Bowls this weekend hopefully. Edmond thanks for
having me back. I'm good to be here. He has
certainly kicked off the season last week with a double
hender of Indo Club with the wind blowing strong and
all all venues which made it very challenging for all
the players. Some of the key results though, with Victoria,
last year's defending champion, have quite comfortably slipped into last
place with Wainui, but a long way to come back.
(00:33):
They've I've played nine one johns for two of the
more teams with potential going forward, so they know they've
got those two away under the belt. The ladies competition,
it was interesting that one of the games actually did
get postponed. It was just one round that was supposed
to I think was supposed to be at but Tony Central.
It was a Hunt and Patony Central game that got postponed.
They'll play, hopefully and better conditions than a few weeks
(00:54):
to come.
Speaker 1 (00:54):
Yeah, great, how are those tables sort of looking over
all tables?
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, we have Stokes Value have started brilliantly last year's
pre first round winner, so they've won. They've hit the
top again at the stage. I've had two good wins
Nine Eye up there, Plymoton Miramar, two teams that would
like to stay there, but we'll do it the hard way.
John'sville middle of the pack, Victoria Year sitting at the bottom,
but should find their way back into contention anytime soon.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
All right, how about the women's table.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah, the Johnsies have started very well at the top
of the table after having two of their better players away,
but they write in contention show that they've still got
plenty of depth in the club Sookes Valure up there,
Victoria Plymoton nine. I slipped into fifth, but they'll come back,
although they did finish near the bottom of that premier
table last year, which was quite a surprise because I
quite a solid side a silver Stream year. Not the
(01:44):
results they would have hoped for and hut the newcomers
as in the last spot.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Okay, well there we go round one underway or the
weekend one for at the club Underway back again shortly.
Let's have a look at some other happenings of late
Rods and tell us what's been.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Going on down Nelson. There were two of Johnstall's high
ranked players, Karen Gildford and Dale Rayner. They were away
from the end of club last week playing in the
Stoke Peers very big money to on it twenty thousand
dollars in prize money. They were beaten in the final
by Mandy Boyd and Curson Griffin and it was the
same result as last year. Both teams were in the
final last year and the final went the same way.
(02:20):
Very good effort, very strong field, very good efort.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yes, that's from right around the country, is it yep?
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Very much. I think invitations are sent to a lot
of the top end players, so it's a very high
class field.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
Great, so another creditor the bill result for them and
the Weddington Penance. We underweigh in those.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Well and penance kicked off Wednesdays still in blustery conditions.
But johnsonvill men did one have started the season the
way they continued last year. They've won up for the
last three years, which is great. Great to be a
part of the team. They started by beating Mira mar
to Or. They got six points on the weekend, so
did Iland Bay, so they're always up there amongst it.
First round that you play a home and away on
(02:55):
that so we've had the first round. There's nine rounds
in total.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
Great and you would have escaped the way to the
weather getting there out of the way Wednesday, right.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yes, yes, certainly when we want to be playing Thursday.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Indeed, this wild weekends, mixed peers and I imagine a
fair few entries from across the board here.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It is good. We got eighty two entries in total,
which is down two on last year, which is pretty
much a part. But it is very early season and
Labor weekend a lot of people go away. Blake signals
there again with his wife Angela. They were last year's winners,
will be tough to beat again. One of the concerns
for Michael and I the selectors is there's not a
lot of rep players playing in it, which is a
(03:31):
bit of a worry. We like to get them out
on the greens early. But there are some good combinations
Ben and Helen King. They'll be tough. They won the
Wellington Champion champ Piers last year. Chamian Champ Mixpiers last year.
A couple of young ones there that our junior Rep players.
That's good to see them out in the paddock, Danny
and Bollin and his wife. And these are the sort
of things where these guys can start with guys and
(03:51):
girls can start putting their hand up and say, well,
hang on, have a look at me. We have a
good strong team there. In section sixteen, Clear Hendra and
Craig Merrily's from Southland. Craig's been around the traps for
a long long time and more than cable player and
of course Clear as an ex New Zealand player, so
they'll be tough.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Yeah. Great, And is this kind of a good, good
sort of litmus test of to how the season is
going to play out, what the form's like or it's
surely seasoned.
Speaker 2 (04:14):
Yeah, it's very early season. So although we take a
bit of it into account, we know that some players
peak after Christmas and that's when the Rep season kicks in.
So we know from previous years that the balls after
Christmas are a lot more important, all.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Right, and it's across the whole Weekend's what kind of
just film matters?
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Is it? Three out of four to quality sorry, two
out of three to qualify tomorrow then so there'll be
about a third or third and a half that will qualify.
Then it all becomes straight knockout quarter finals Monday. But
weather conditions for Monday are looking poor.
Speaker 1 (04:41):
All right, Yeah, well we'll see what we can do.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
There and get transferred inside or whatever.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Okay, Well, good luck to everyone taking part in that
big event for Labour weekend, the Wellington Mixed pairs and
well Finn bar Mcgwigan. He sees a bowler that's been
talked about a lot on this slot over the years, Rod,
someone that you know just is going from strength to
strength in quite a big moment coming up for him.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Came out for him. He's off to the World Cup
with Keanu Darby from Otagos. This is a huge experience
for Finn Burro and a great opportunity because from this
and good results here will lead on to Conwealth Games
and World Bowls. I mean he was our star player
last year. He won all four Wellington events, which first
time I think in the history of the game, and
at such a young age. He could have still played
(05:23):
for our under twenty six side, but yeah, we decided
not to pick him. We thought we'd gi Hm a
break because he's got plenty of balls. But yeah, he'll
do well, very very capable player, and we look forward
to being associated with him in the REP season going
forward to.
Speaker 1 (05:36):
And us that we've got a great indoor center in
Wellington now where he could train all weeks.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Train as long as he wants, and yeah, as many
days he wants here, and that's.
Speaker 1 (05:42):
Great, fantastic. Well, thanks for bringing us up to speed
on everything right. I hope the competition over the weekend
doesn't get too badly affected by weather, but I'm sure
we'll chat some of the results or where things are
at next Saturday.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
All the best, thanks at him for more from news
