Speaker 1 (00:03):
Twenty eight past seven. It is let's look ahead today's
action and club rugby as we continue our scan around
the local sporting codes. Swindale Shield dun undus so congratulations
to Old Boys University for their fourth Swindale Shield win
and club history. But now things moved to the Jubilee
and Hardam Cups where it's sort of a championship type format,
some knockout games, other teams having a few lives in
(00:25):
this one too. Let's bring in Max Rodgers from the
Wellington Rugby Union for a preview morning Max Value. Yeah,
doing good mate. Well, I'm sure a busy week as
you've got everything set up for well the Jubilee and
Hardam Cups, which are officially underway of course after Old
Boys University were crowned Swindale Shield champions last weekend. Max,
(00:45):
just we'll go to the Jubilee Cup first. Do you
want to just remind us what the format is? Obviously
we're getting towards that preliminary final stage for some of
these teams. They're into a knockout kind of format this weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, so's of a complicated one, but the top four
teams get two chances at the Jubilee Cup so that
they can afford one loss this week of the So
you've got one before two v three. The winners of
those games advance straight to the semifinal and the losers
go and play the quarterfinals next week. And then you've
(01:22):
got five, eight and sixty seven, or the winner stays
alive and plays a quarterfinal against the losers of one
be four and two v three and the losers drop
down and play Hardam Cup.
Speaker 1 (01:33):
All right, yes, I'm sure all the equations and formutations
are out by all these teams to negotiate this this
phase of the competition. Well, let's start off with Jubilee Cup.
We'll start off with that. One plays four game. As
you mentioned, the Swindale Shield champions a pretty good run
of form after a pretty dominant season so far, Old
Boys University taking on fourth place Tower.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah, the Swindelle Shield winners over you hosting Tawer and
the first of our Jubilee qualifiers, where as mentioned before,
the winner will get a week off and go straight
to the semi final. Last time out over you, they
took the win forty three to twenty nine. But they've
been on a role like as over you tyer winning
their last seven games in a row, so it could
be a lot closer than the last time out.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Interesting and then also playing for a week off and
a second chance Potni and Huddle Boys Marist.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah mcdain shield rematch, this time for a spot on
the Jubilee Semis but Tony. They took this one out
in round one in a high scoring forty eight thirty
one win which was highlighted by an eighteen point haul
from first five Logan Henry. But to only they won
their last six games will Huddle Boys. They've had a
bit of a mixed bag over that same period, so
they'll look to put everything together and come away with
(02:45):
a win today.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
All right, very good, and then let's those go to
the other tranch of games where it's the team's well
fighting for survival and the Jubilee Cup and in a
place in the prelim finals next week. Upper Heart taking
on MSP.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, big game today for the Rams in ms where
the winner stays alive in the Jubilee Cup and the
loser joins the Fray for the Hardam Cup. Last time,
our Upper Hart cruise past MSP forty six nineteen, highlighted
by Yti Campbell who scored a het trick. The Rams
they've won six of their last seven games, while MSP
they've only won two of their last seven. So a
big mountain to climb today for merit.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
All right, and ob you up against part of us
of Plymoton. I guess you know, based on the table
and Swindlee shield form are pretty evenly poised a game.
What do you expect here?
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Yeah, so orio's what on the side taking on pretty
much Plymoton. The rematch of the Jubilee Cup final from
last year, where one of these teams will now be
playing in the Hardam Cup in twenty twenty four, will
find find out who that is today. These two teams
they met in round one and Aures came away with
a narrow twenty nine to twenty four Winn and Murma.
And it's a special day today for se Con, Weservy
(03:51):
and Matt Gooson who both played their one hundred Premier
games today.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Awesome or congratulations to both of them. And Matt Gooson,
the older brother of longtime Hurricane and Wellington line. Where's Goosen?
So yeah, big male stone for him today. Where's of
course still playing as rugby over in Scotland at the
moment anyway down to the Hardam Cup now, Max and
these of course the teams ranked nine to fourteen from
swin Dale shield and as we've mentioned, a couple more
(04:17):
will be added from the Jubilee Cup next weekend down
to the Hardam Cup. So are these teams at knockout
stage yet for the Hardam Cup?
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Max? Not quite so. These teams each get two weeks
of rugby as well, so you've got nine to fourteen,
ten B thirteen and eleven B twelve. The second round
of this is sort of all depends on who wins
and who loses, So you've got the highest ranked winners,
the second high rank winner, the third highest rank winner,
(04:46):
and then same with the losers as well, and the
lowest ranked losers will play the lowest rank losers from
the Jubilee Cup.
Speaker 1 (04:56):
All right, well here we go. We'll go into these
three games. Now, why are we your Massa hosting Avalon
across the hill? Avalon obviously struggling through the Swindale Shields,
I guess be a pretty solid prediction to go why
are we on the sum with there?
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah? I think most people will be picking why are
we here today. The last time these two teams met
in round one, whin we walked away with a comfortable
forty three seventeen win. Evalon they haven't. They didn't win
a game in the swin Dale Shield, So I'll be
after a big upset today to capture their first one
of the year.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
All right, Johnsonville hosting the x Men.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah, these two sides. They met in round three and
it was Johnsabo who came away with a forty nine
to twenty point win over the x Men, which was
highlighted by Mark Saddam's fourteen points in Seamus Roby's brace
of tries. So this one could You'd more likely pick Johnsonville.
But Xman have had a few good games in the
last half of that Swindale Shield, maybe one or two,
(05:50):
so it could go anyway come finals time.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
All right, and then eleven plays twelve, you'll planink your
team up against North. What's the vibe amongst the camp
this week?
Speaker 2 (06:00):
Everyone's excited for this game, a game that Pornekee definitely
thought they should have won the game. Also, Norse thought
they should have won in round one. It will probably
be hard to pick a winner based off the first
round result. More Sty've been on the receiving end of
a couple of hidings in the last three weeks to
top four teams, while Pornegere they've played good rugby for
sixty five minutes almost all season, but then I've let
(06:22):
it a few too many games get away in those
closing moments. So both teams they'll need to play the
full eighty today if thereafter a win.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Awesome Max, Well yeah, all those games kicking off at
two forty five across the board this afternoon, both the
Jubilee and Hardam Cups. Is the next phase of club
rugby continues for the season. Appreciate the previews always, mate,
we'll chat next week.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
He is that I'm thinking.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Max Rogers out of Wellington rugby. So yeah, things getting
interesting today with the start of the Hardham and Jubilee
Cups and local club rugby, and in fact, in the
next sort of five ten minutes we will get Louis
Covid on the line, the captain of Old Boys University
about their Swindale Shield win and look ahead to the
Jubilee Cup for them. Are they going to do the
this year? We will see, looking forward to chatting to
(07:02):
Louis very shortly quick look at Todder Feederwa Carpety Rugby.
It's the final round of the round robin there today
are Lahue put their feet up, having won all twelve
matches so far, they'll get to see how the race
to avoid them and the semi finals plays out. Today.
Shannon will be hosting Levin College Old Boys in one match,
and they, along with Foxton who hosts Way and I,
(07:23):
could each finish anywhere from second to fourth. So it's
going to be really interesting how these games play out today.
Livin Wanderers and parta part of UMU have the Livian
domain today as they each seek to avoid the Wooden
Spoon and the competition, and it wided up at Bush
also uncertainty. Maris are already assured of hosting one of
the Championship semi finals next weekend. Now they'll look too
complete and unbeaten second round for the Moose Company Cup
(07:45):
when they host Neighbors Masted and Red Star. Carterton should
join them, but it won't be easy away at Faddy
Armor against East Coast with Pioneer looking to pounce when
they travel down to Greytown. And the fourth match was
to see martin Borough take on Ekadherna for the final place.
But in all the Northerners have unfortunately been forced to
default after simply running out of front rowers. Yet you
(08:05):
can't really field a team without front rowers, can you.
So note that match between Martinborough and Eckertahuna has been
called off with a forfeit and just quickly College Rugby.
After last weekend's somewhat truncated round, it should be a
full slate of matches in the Premiership today before the
school holiday break. The round will start with the one
pm kickoff and marsterden wided Upper College hosts Huddington National
(08:28):
two point thirty. We'll see the match of the day
on paper is out on the Miramar Peninsula as Scot's
hosts silver Stream. Around past the airport is the Eastern
Suburbs Derby. This one always brings out some passion, doesn't
it wrong to tie and some pats town while through
the tunnel. Wellington College will be at home against part
of part of UMU and the final match of the
round is and Tala the home school Tawer College will
take on Saint Bernards. I just want to say ready
(08:50):
enjoyed being out at Potty Too A Park midweek for
the Under fifteen College Rugby Women's and Girls Finals. This
was the girls' schools from around Wellington seeing some great
young talent from some of the schools. Wellington Girls College
took out the Pride Division with a big win over
Sacred Heart College, so congratulations to Wellington Girls College for
(09:12):
that one. And then the main final saw Atia College
take out the Poet Championship and Under fifteen Girls Rugby.
They had a pretty tight win there, so yeah, congratulations
to some of the winners, including Wellington Girls College and
Atia College out there in Potty Do It midweek. Great
to see the future of girls rugby looking pretty promising
(09:32):
in the Wellington region. For more from News Talks ad
