Speaker 1 (00:00):
Haw can it we as proud to support to the
A and Z Business of the Year Awards back for
twenty twenty six. Entries close this Friday, the thirty first.
There's fourteen categories to choose from. You can find all
the details at Business Off the Year dot n Z.
I sat down for an extended chat with last year's
Supreme winner, Matt Turner from All Pocky Thermal Pools and
(00:20):
Spa in Methan, celebrating their fourth birthday next month. So
thinking back to twenty twenty one when they opened, that
was in the throes of a global pandemic. So I
started by asking Matt's you weren't a little nervous going
into this.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
I guess it's one of those things. We're in a
bit too.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Deep, but intended we'd already started filling the polls.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
Yeah, we did have too much choice, so we held
on and we were on for the ride.
Speaker 1 (00:47):
It must have been squeaky bum time though, surely wow, yeah, just.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Something else to think about, But no, we managed through.
And I guess in all fairness, we didn't have an
operating standard before that, so we knew different. So for us,
it's just been positive growth leading on from twenty twenty one,
and and well just keep striding forward.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
A real jewel in our tourism crown. What kind of
impact have you seen from this?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Oh, it's been huge. Winter We've always said Mountain Hartsen,
it's been great. But we've given us given the ability
to have some really strong visitation and myths and over summer,
and in credit we are I guess the gym, as
you say, people want to come out and enjoy a
bit of relaxation and a bit of a treat for themselves,
and what better place.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
To do it.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Not many places around the foothills that don't have that
wonderful vantage. Was the location always where you've ended up
next to the racecourse there.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I think there were a few places banded around for
a location, but this is where brilliantly just off the
back of the Myth and Trotting Club, and if you're
a horse enthusiasts, you can watch the races and relaction
in the pools, but just somewhat someone on the outskirts
of town, so you feel somewhat removed and you have
a lovely walk down through the trees to get here,
(02:06):
and then it snows, you're surrounded by snow as well,
which is pretty exciting.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Well, you wouldn't be in a hurry to get home
in the snow. I would have thought, when conditions are good,
do you have a few punters that jump in the
pools and watch the racers from the from the back?
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah, every day and again we do.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
It's quite in saying you might hear a bit of
a cheer if they've hired their own private tub and
they're sitting on.
Speaker 1 (02:27):
The Oh, I didn't think about that.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
Yeah, hell good, Yeah, it's funny. We've just installed a.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Brand new sauna as well, which is right on the
back of our primitive boundary and you'd almost touched the
horses if you wanted to reach out of it. It's
that close to the final turn.
Speaker 1 (02:43):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, it's quite an experience.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
And then of course you've got that cold tub. Is
that what Ricky May uses for his therapy.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
He's got a key to the back door, and.
Speaker 1 (02:54):
He's got a key to the whole town that guy.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
I don't think anyone strict as the access.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
You can just free, free for all anywhere he wants
to go.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
It's spearticular. So at the last am Z business of
the Year Awards. You guys recognized as supreme winners. What
did that mean?
Speaker 3 (03:11):
It was huge.
Speaker 2 (03:12):
We were absolutely stoked. We were humbled as well.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
We never thought we would have bet the level of success, but.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
It was amazing.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
It was a great opportunity for us to reflect on
what we've done when we wouldn't yet apployed and put
in all the effort for the award nominations. But it
was brilliant just set recognition for the team as well.
We took our leadership team through to the award tonight,
but we also celebrated with our team back on so afterwards,
And yeah, I think it's nice they putting so much
effort into delivering a phenomenal job and to be recognized
(03:42):
and such a level as hugely humbling. But you're very
proud of what we've done.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
And I don't think you'd need.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
To win anything to actually gain from going through the process.
So we give you a great chance to just reflect
on what you've done. And it's so easy to have
a success.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
And move on.
Speaker 3 (03:58):
You know, you're always shooting for the net biggest, greatest thing,
but to sit down and reflect on what you have
achieved and how you've got to that point. But it
also helps you plan for the future as well.
Speaker 2 (04:07):
So yeah, I think regardless of.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Taking away award or notice, it's a brilliant process to
be involved in.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
So how does it all unfold and is it a
bit of work?
Speaker 3 (04:16):
It is a little bit of work. So you need
to you need to submit an application and the application
is relevant to the award that you want to a trifle,
So there's a little bit of work in terms of
putting that application together, having a think about I guess
how you can sell yourself gest but also what metrics
you've used to acknowledge that. So it's all good and
(04:36):
well saying that you're the best and the greatest, but
it's nice to be able to have a little bit
of data or metrics an opportunity to truly analyze.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
How that's come to be.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
So there's a little bit of work putting it together,
but I think it's a great regardless of as.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
You're going from the world or not.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
I think it's good to be able to do that
and just kind of piece how you're tracking along on
your journey. And you know, as always a great greade
opportunity to reflect and think about is this the way
we're wanting to travel?
Speaker 2 (05:05):
And how is it going? And can we make it
any better?
Speaker 1 (05:07):
As we continue so often to that point that you made.
You know, we're always so busy on the tools, kicking goals,
jumping from one task to the next. Is it quite
welcome to take the time to actually step back and
work on the business as opposed to in it is?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
It's great And I think with small operators you always
you're almost relish and getting your hands. Did you love
being on the front line and being in that you know,
for us customer service, I love being in front of
the guests and to them and finding out how it's
all going. But yeah, the opportunity to step back and
almost that holistic look down on what's going on and
how it's going, and just a good reminder it is
(05:48):
so so easy to have a win or achieve something
and ambition jumps straight back in so you're thinking about
the next goal or next step. But yeah, it gives
you a chance to sit down with the team and
so we actually achieved a lot. When you go and
or when you submit your application, you get the opportunities
to present it to a panel as well.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
That's Dragon's Den.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
Yeah, yeah, no, they're not that scary, and I guess
a little bit different. We're not asking for millions of dollars,
so perhaps, you know, not as scary as if we
were to approach the Dragon's Den. Yeah, yeah, yeah, but no,
it's a great opportunity to talk about and they have
some really interesting questions and want to know about the business,
and I suppose from their point of view, it's probably
(06:30):
an amazing experience just seeing how much it's happening out
in the district and how many amazing feats and businesses
are really pushing the boundaries and excelling.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
That's what I personally love about these awards is you're
there on the night and as somebody who was born
and bred, I did spend a bit of time away,
but I've come back now. You tend to think you've
got a pretty good handle on what happens in mc canbury,
and then you go along to this event and you think, wow,
I had no idea that business even existed, let alone
(06:59):
are doing such wonderful things exporting to the world, or
you know, these guys are innovating in ways I couldn't
have even imagined. It's all happening right here.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Well, it's amazing, and I think that's why it was
so humbling when we were at the wards. As you're
sitting there and you're listening to everyone else that's applied
and all the other finalists, and you just think, gosh,
we're a little mid Canbury.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
Okay.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
I noticed that part of the swag that you achieved
last time. One of the awards was excellence and environmental sustainability.
We're all familiar. As we drive past, we see that
big bank to the left that's covered in what I
assume as solar panels. So how does all that work?
Speaker 3 (07:37):
It is, it's quite a phenomenal introduction of solar for us.
So we're heating the water directly. Those tubes on the
side of our facility.
Speaker 1 (07:48):
Are the tubes not panels?
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Yeah, yeah, we're being tubes. It's amazing.
Speaker 3 (07:52):
They capture the direct sunshine regardless of were sits in
the sky, and they are phenomenally efficient for a wonder
through them, and they were creating about seventy degrees worth
of heat, which is well in excess of what we need.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, phenomenal.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
So yeah, as far as we understand, the first commercial
integration of solar and the water is sourced from the
Ring of Tada, which is glacial fed, and I think
there's something quite unique and sitting in the pools and
looking up towards the mountains fishing when the snowkit and
knowing that the water you're in has been fed from
the exact vista.
Speaker 1 (08:28):
So do you use any electricity to heat?
Speaker 2 (08:31):
So we can heat. We have secondary heating we needed.
But it's amazing.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
So this winter it was easily cold, you know, would
come in an five degree mornings, but the second the
sun comes out, the solar starts clicking into life and
it takes very little sunshine actually to have it run.
In fact, some days when the clouds are still partially over,
we'll still be running off the solar. So yeah, yeah,
it's a bit brilliant. You come in and they're all
frozen over, they go through a quick defrost circle. Next
(08:57):
thing you know they're heading the pools.
Speaker 1 (08:59):
Is that manual defrost cycle that there's some guy who
has to go out there and on a minus four
morning and scrape them all off like our windscreen.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
No, no, we have automated. We do have a manual
graph that comes in and cleans the pools every morning,
so those cold mornings definitely chaps on a few late.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Every morning every morning. If you've got some other fun
facts about the pools, how much water they take or something.
Speaker 3 (09:21):
Like that, Oh gosh, yes, I've got so many fun facts.
I guess I'm a bit of a leading from cleaning
the pools every morning is probably the fun fact that
we drain.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Them every night. What yeah, before the team hit home.
Speaker 3 (09:33):
Every night they pushed the drain all button and the
pool's completely empty. And for us, it's the most efficient
way to keep the heat in the water rather than
trying to find pool covers.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
It almost sounds a little bit wasteful we keep the water.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
We don't it would absolutely it would be wasteful if we.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Oh so you're not just dumping it out onto the racecourse.
Speaker 3 (09:52):
No, no, no, No, they've got enough irrigation. They don't
even from No. So we have two big storage tanks
at the yes, six hundred thousand leaders worth of storage,
and we pumped the water out into those and overnight
they stay warm, they'll they'll fill trays and heat and
then in the morning, once we've done our pool cleaning,
(10:14):
we pushed the all fill and water comes racing back.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
And again, Wow, no way, how long does that take?
Speaker 2 (10:21):
Only an hour and a half.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
For six hundred thousand liters?
Speaker 3 (10:24):
Yeah, yet there's a fairly decent sized pump in the background.
Speaker 1 (10:28):
Damn.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Yeah, pretty impressive.
Speaker 1 (10:30):
That is cool. Okay, no wonder you were also recognized
for innovation.
Speaker 3 (10:36):
Yeah, there's a few bespoke little bits and pieces in
the vecround.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
That the water was based on.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
Damn. So what's next for all, pooky? You got any
new developments? Maybe some new pool blueprints in the making.
Speaker 3 (10:51):
We're always scheming the next thing. I don't like sitting
still for too long, so we've got a few ideas.
We've just released the own new Sterenity product in June.
So there was that was the latest greatest invention where
we've introduced a big sauna, a true cold bath which
drops all the way down to six degrees. Yes, they
(11:16):
tell me it's the best thing for you.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
I don't know if I believe that it's good for you.
I'll keep that was. That was a big thing that
we released this winter and it's been.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
A huge amazing value over there and just another luxurious
experience and amazing views.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
And then yeah, so at the moment, not too sure
what the next.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
Step will be, but I've definitely got a few little
things pressing around the background if I'm keen to pursue,
and I think, you never know, we might I might
introduce another product or another experience at some point in
the future.
Speaker 1 (11:56):
Matt Turner. That's what we call the teas and radio land.
It must be a funky environment to work in the
sense that you're sitting there in your office suit and
tie and then you've got some dude and budgy smugglers
walking past.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
You know, it's a bit of white noise. Now, I
don't really think about it, but I'm sure if I
thought hard enough when I started, it was.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
It was definitely taking a bit of getting used to it.
And everyone says that, they say, as you walk around
with you know, you dressed in your suit, but everyone
else has got next to nothing on. And for me
it's just.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
I don't really think about it anymore.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Is that casual Friday you turn it in your budgy
smugglers And at what point, you know, does it do
togs become undies?
Speaker 2 (12:38):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
Yeah, either into my office or into intermittent itself and
walked all the way out of the pall from there,
I think at that point it switches from budgy.
Speaker 1 (12:47):
Smugglers to in the thick of winter. If you're brave
enough to walk in togs all the way back into
meath In township, you get nothing but respect from me.
I'll give you that for free to around off here
met tour and it's been a fun chat for any
local businesses. Time is quickly running out. But if you're
sitting there thinking, oh yeah, maybe about these awards, what
(13:09):
would you say to them, what advice would you give?
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Go for it? Absolutely, go for it.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
I wouldn't hesitate. If nothing else, you're going to have
a great opportunity to just sit back and reflect on
what you've achieved.
Speaker 1 (13:19):
You're doing some really cool stuff out there. Look forward
to staying in touch chairs. Were diving in with us
this morning. General manager of or Pookie, Matt Turner, brilliant.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Thanks Matt, you have a good day.
