Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hoping it's going to be okay for a big old
shindig at the showgrounds tomorrow afternoon. Hammers welcome North Otago
and the first two hundred kids at the game getting
a free milk and chippies all thanks to Anchor and Heartland.
If that wasn't reason enough to get on down and
the fact it's the Hand and Shields Challenge, it's also
(00:21):
the charity game, so ten bucks at the gate supporting
the wonderful work of the Meningitis Foundation. Jed and Clear
rushed and dropped by to talk about some of the
stuff that they get up to.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yep, Raising awareness and lobbying YEP. And the support to
families who suffer from meningitis because there's very little support
out there from the hell system for them as well.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
What sort of support do you find that need.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Just generally someone to talk to, someone with lived experience
that has been through it, just to show them all
on their own. Look.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
They also a number of inquiries we get and survivors
of meningitis often have condition which is similar to an
acquired brain injury of different levels, so it's it's like
a concussion concussion to get over so you know, again,
they don't qualify for any help through the health system
because a lot of concussion kind of type clinics and
(01:15):
head act type clinics you've got to be ACC and
meningitis doesn't fall under ACC. So they do struggle within
the health you know, within the health system to actually
seek and get the help that they require.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
So the game on Saturday, it's part of sort of
Meningitis weekend really in that.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, we've got Will Menagita's Day on Sunday, look, which
is a pretty cool event. So there's an international campaign
which is light Up the Road, So we're we're lighting
up prominent landmarks around New Zealand. We've got one for
two or forty four landmarks around New Zealand includes our
clock tower. Clocktailer has been done. That was one of
(01:53):
the first ones that got ticked off the list trying trigle.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Expresso have come on board to that. Tony is really
supportive and they're going to like that of the week
in which is pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Yeah. So we're also launching our Tonguan and Sarmon version
of the coloring in book, which was we did the
Terrau one last year and we're launching the Sarmon and
Tongaman with support from Andrew Cartwright from Cartwright's Insurance in
Steadfast group. So that's pretty cool initiative just to sort
(02:21):
of target that one of our high at risk groups,
which is our Mariam Pacific, and to make sure that
they can all learn from it. The young people can
learn about the value of protecting themselves by getting vaccinated.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
So copies are that are we floating around the showgrounds.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Copies that have been floating around the showgrounds. We're getting
them out amongst all the Pacific communities throughout New Zealand.
There's a group of us in the game in South Canopy.
They got a cultural around this week at the rugby
down there as well, so.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
Nat and then of course the special strips, the jerseys
that the boys will be running out onto the park
in and they're all going up on trade me for
charity auction. I've been advised by an Edison that maybe
I should try and get one that's a couple of
sizes more than I usually am for the developing dad bods.
So maybe I need to be looking at the front
row here.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
What do you reckon? Oh, we're all conscious of that.
Look you haven't got that on your own. Look, yeah,
massive shout out to Kenny, Jason Tennant and the mc
canery rugbying and staff and board for what they've done
and the boys they get rapped behind this as well.
Also Reagan from Gilbert they've supplied the jerseys. So yeah,
(03:31):
look it's a massive fundraiser for us. It does make
a big difference. It gives us the ability to raise awareness,
it gives us the ability to save lives, so big
thanks to every involved.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
It's going to be a great day to right it is,
so jump on trade me to find those charity auctions
for the jerseys and get on down to the Showgrounds
two o five tomorrow afternoon up the Hammers in support
of the Meningitis Foundation.
