Speaker 1 (00:00):
Kenny Edison from Mid Canterbury Rugby dropped by yesterday with
a very special guest to the studio. The Hannon Shields,
which is in our possession after far too long. Weighs
an absolute ton. It's made of solid wort hand. It's
inscribed with a few plaques. The one at the top
(00:22):
presented by tim Arumya ab Hannan back in nineteen forty five,
so this has seen a few rugby fixtures since then,
and then we plaques for South Canterbury North Otago. Yep,
there's Mid Canterbury but also Eshburton on there as well.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, I think we were Mid Canoby Rugby was the
Ashburton team originally before the Mid Canterbury Rugby Union took
its form.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
Before we noticed that we've got goalkickers like tom Riekey
Outam Mefin and we needed to widen.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
The scope exactly exactly.
Speaker 1 (00:52):
You haven't got it engraved yet, Oh.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Come on, it's been busy. It's been doing a tour
of the region recently. Obviously the boys had on the
Saturday night after after the game at South Cany.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
I noticed it's been There's a few strit marks from
what's obviously been a cloth.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
That's probably because my office now, probably because my office
was dirty. And there's not a chance I'm throwing the
boys under the bus, No way, no way.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
Brilliant that we're going to have all summer to engrave that.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Well, we've got North of Tago coming up next weekend,
but we're going to be the optimist.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
And to our credit, our eased, our A team, the
development team, they took out the hand and Cup last weekend.
We've got the set back to back victories over South
Canary two weeks in a row, which was phenomenal and
a great crowd.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Actually, I've got a big shout out to.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
All of our supporters within the region and people actually
turned up in big numbers to come and support the
A's before the Hammers game as well. So the A's
were playing in front of a you know, a raucous
crowd who got right behind them and it was a
proper arm wrestle as well. It was, Yeah, it was.
It was a real tight affair. It's great to see.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
So while they can raced easy, Hemma's match on and
to round Saven and defeated on the right this weekend
against Poverty.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
By absolutely I mean Poverty By know that if they
can win their next two games, they are well in
the hunt for a semi final.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
For the Meats Cup.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
So for them, there's huge incentive and they'll absolutely take
plenty away from a victory last weekend against South Canterbury.
And someone said to me in at the show grounds
last week when we were playing, when was the last
time South Cament we lost too in a row? Yeah,
you know it's it's not something you hear a lot,
so that gives you an insight into you know the
(02:32):
fact that Poverty Bear are a good side and they're
sitting there with twenty one points for a reason, and
we certainly won't be taking them lightly.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
I say we, I mean Matt and the boys. I
had nothing to do with that.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
It's a big effort from the boys and from everyone
that's involved, you know, Jase Tennant from a logistics point
of view as manager, and our physios.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
And you know conditioning guys.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
They're trying to prep the players as well as we
can for getting on the field and then straight away
we're into the recovery mode as soon as they walk
off the field to.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
Make sure that they're in fine condition for the following.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Week Actually on that the Hemmer's physio, did I spot
that there was a really special milestone.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, Audra completed one hundredth game last weekend and really
well celebrated. You know, she's hugely important to the Hammers,
to the Union obviously, I remember at the Celtic Rugby
Club as well. So and look when we talk about volunteers,
these are the unsung heroes of our game. So it
was brilliant to see not only the team and the Union,
but the players themselves, you know, the coaches, the management
(03:32):
celebrate ordres one hundredth game and hopefully there's plenty more,
you know.
Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, hands on quite literally. I'm sure there's a lot
of wives that are particularly thankful for her because if
she wasn't working out the kinks after the game, imagine
how much they would mon when they get home. Right,
all my bag, all my cabs.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
That's a lot of raidocks going in the bar.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Are we going to be able to catch a stream
of this? I was gatted a few weeks back that
South Canterbury didn't go and put the thing on Facebook.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
My understanding was poverty b game was live streamed last
weekend and there war was footage. But again those are
the kinds of things that we know, we'll we'll find
out and we'll we'll share on our social media. But yeah,
every province is battling the week, you know, at the moment,
and sometimes, to be fair Luke, it's just that there
aren't people around in their area to actually do what
is required to get the game set up and live stream.
(04:19):
We're really lucky we've got good commentators that come down
and support and people who give up their time to
do that and to say we've got asher as a
good crew. But collectively as a union, you know, as
a group of Heartland unions, we're working hard to try
and find ways to see if we can get games
live streamed. Obviously there is a game of a week
every week that Sky do and the following week against
(04:41):
North of Tago will be live on sky on TV.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Yep, so that is so good. They Bush game was good.
There's somebody healthy enough to hold a KM coded tomorrow.
Keeping on your socials for that, fingers crossed. Anything else
maybe a little closer to home that's worth keeping on
this weekend? Is there rather rugby action on?
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, Look, we've got game out at Mount Summers this
weekend against the West Coast, So it's some of our
younger lads, they under eighteens and on the sixteens are
going up to the un the sixteens tournament up in
christ Shirt, so they head up at the weekend for
a couple of days of rugby as well. So if
you are looking to get out and watch a little
bit of rugby, get out to mount Summers and keep
(05:22):
an eye on our social media pages for kickoff times
and whatnot.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
We're just trying to work with the teams like West.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Coast and Buller who do struggle to get games and
they do struggle to get people to come and play them,
and so we sort of been able to find a
bit of a halfway point for them or a bit
closer to them.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
Is the real draw the working when they can stop
by the Mountain Summer's store on the White Home and
pick up one of the time beef read Devin Paws.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
I'm sure it would be. I mean, it's got to
be right.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
It might well be the best pie in mid Canterbury.
We're going to find it after right.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
I've been listening. I've been listening. That's that's a controversial
it's difficult. I mean, pie wise, I'm a bit of
a sucker. I hit because I live up in West Melton.
I'm sort of out Sheffield where I'm I'm a bit
lucky for Sheffield. If you need to go across the river,
then I can sneak into Oxford and grab a pie
out some good options up there. But anyway, I believe
(06:17):
there's an app that you can rate pies.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
Ah, yeah, there's a New Zealand app.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
So if you go to the app store, there is
an app that you can get into and it allows
you to go and rate bakeries and rate.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
The quality of their pies. So maybe that's one for
you to do a bit of research.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
Yeah, sink my tight into that. Anything else that's worth
Keevin tebbs on this weekend, Not so much this.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Weekend, as I say, there's plenty of going on with
some of the Junior rep stuff which is awesome, and
the Hammers got going on and then probably the Lens
just to keep a wee eye on for the following
week against North Otago. It's our charity game, so we're
supporting the men and Foundation and I'm sure there'll be
much more commentary on that in the in the week
week go two leading up, watch this space. There's plenty
(06:58):
more to come in the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Neat, I hope you've been doing some stretches to hold
this very heavy hen and shield out talking shields super
quick because you spent a bit of time running the
North Harbor Union. Can they find their first w the
one that counts for the fifth exchange of the log
Award this weekend to take it back up north with them?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
Look, I've got a lot of strong connections still up
there and good friends ag and the CEO is a
good made of mine, and yeah, listening to him. You know,
they've had a really tough season, but there's a part
of me that was love them to go down and
do it. I think I heard a start yesterday. They've
won it once in the early two thousands, and then
I've had fifteen other attempts to try and win it
(07:39):
and I've never never managed to get the shield. But
the season that they're having at the moment, I'm pretty
sure winning the shield and then potentially having a train
routine at the following week against Southland could mak a
breaker season.
Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, look at the wild stats, and if there's one
season that proves anything possible, it's this one. So it
is and you'll be keeping tabs on that.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
One hundred percent. And I think you and I touched
on it earlier. Two fabulous seasons. This year, you know,
Heartland Rugby is alive and kicking. We need to continue
to support and market it. You look at the NPC,
it isn't any different. There are teams that can beat
each other on any given day and we're going to
go right to the end of that season as well.
And as I say, I'd love to see the Shield
get back on a plane and fly out at Duneedin
(08:21):
on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Yeah on your mind. Cheers A dropping boy, Kenny Edison.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Awesome, thanks, look cheers
