Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yes I'm going to Italy. Joe McKenna, Good morning.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Good morning, Tim, and happy New Year to you.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yes you too well. Speaking of New Year, the highest
number of New Year's Eve accidents three hundred and nine
are the highest and ten years in Italy.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
These are amazing figures when you think about it. We've
had twenty eight thousand checks across the country, one hundred
and forty six arrests. But some of the accidents that
are caused by fireworks or random shootings are quite shocking. Fortunately,
there was one major incident where an Egyptian was shot

(01:00):
dead after stabbing four people in a random street attack
up in Rimini, So that was quite frightening when you
think about it in the context of some of these
other attacks we're seeing in New Orleans and in Germany.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Yeah, are those mental health issues or terrorists how they
treat them at an incident of doing that?

Speaker 3 (01:17):
They haven't indicated at this point, but there has been
some concern about the growth of right wing fascist groups
in Italy, some Jahadi groups, and we've seen some arrests
by police in recent months in that particular sphere.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
Like me, migrant riscues and also deaths, of course, willn't
disappearances what's going on there.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
We're still seeing attempts by migrants to cross the Mediterranean,
usually from Libya and Tunisia. Even though the Maloney government
claims to have blocked nearly two hundred thousand migrants from
crossing in the last two years, but seven have been
rescued in the latest attempt, Twenty is still missing, and
one of those saved was an eight year old Syrian boy.

(02:05):
So it'll be interesting to see if we see more
Syrians to make that crossing to Europe after the upheaval
that we've seen there recently.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, I'll guess some of them probably want to stick
around as well. I don't know, it depends on how
that government shapes out, doesn't it exactly, And at least
a posed princess starting a royal video game.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yes, I don't know if your listeners might recall, but
Italy had a referendum right after World War Two. It
got rid of the royal family and so it's a republic.
But Emanuelo Philiberto, who is the fifty two year old
grandson of the last king, is always looking for a
business opportunity. He's made pastor, he's been selling pastor in

(02:48):
Los Angeles. He's made movies. He appeared on Strictly Come
Dancing's equivalent in Italy called Dancing with the Stars. And
now he's starting a game called Royal Land, and he's
gotten together with other deposed royal airs across Europe to
try and put this together. I'm not sure if it's
going to happen, but he's quite confident at this point.

Speaker 2 (03:08):
Might that might give Prince Harrus some inspiration. Maybe that's
from him. He's been off the radar a little bit lately.
But anyway, Hey, an Italian tourist killed shark attacks.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, that's very unusual, but I think Italians have been
shocked to hear this news. An Italian man was attacked
just off the coast of just the off to Egypt
in the Red Sea. I think he was swimming and snorkeling.
Another Italian came to his aid when he heard shouts
cries for help, and he was injured, but not seriously.

(03:46):
But it's not the first time. There have been several
shark attacks in that area and different attempts by the
government to or promises to do more to try and
monitor what the sharks are doing. But I think this
has really surprised Italians over the Christmas period because many
of them really love to go to that area to
escape the winter.

Speaker 2 (04:05):
Oh well, don't tell not to come to New Zealand.
As some parts savan New Zeland, there were the sharks,
the sort of disturbing numbers off just off sure where
people are swimming. But actually, Joe, did you celebrate the
New Year in style?

Speaker 3 (04:17):
I had a few drinks out with friends and I
decided to go home. I didn't go and see the
wonderful fireworks at the coliseum, but I did run upstairs
and I saw some great fireworks in my neighborhood. So
I had a little bit of a go, but I
avoided the crowds.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Let's say that excellent, Oh well, good, nice and safe?

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Too.

Speaker 2 (04:36):
Good on you. Hey, thanks Jo, I'm here to talk
to you. That's Joe McKenna and Italy.
