What's Happening in your neck of the woods on Summer with.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
You The as Yees sixteen past six. It's known for
its wine making industry, but Marlborough has a lot more
to offer. There's tons of small secluded beaches and islands
to explore. It's also home to New Zealand's longest running
food and wine festival, which starts in early February, and
there's but there's plenty of to do in the meantime.
Marlboro District Mayor Nadine Taylor joins me. Now, good morning,

(00:43):
good morning, So how's the tourism industry looking like at
the moment? Are you all booked up for summer?

Speaker 3 (00:50):
We're always booked up for summer. It's all go here really.
It's been a beautiful summer so far and looking good ahead.
And as always, people across New Zealand want to come
to Marlborough. They want to head to the Marlborough Sounds buzzing.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
What are the key attractions because when people think of Marlborough,
well wine comes to mind. I'm not sure I'm not
sure what that says about me, but I mean, you
guys are big on the wine and you've got the
festivals and things like so yeah, so what's the key attractions?

Speaker 3 (01:27):
Actually one comes to mind for me too and I
live here, so it's understandable. But I think for some,
of course, one of the key attractions is that Marlborough sounds,
you know, whether you come across on the ferry or
whether you drive up to Marlborough Flight. And people are
flocking to be by the water. They like to have
that traditional family summer beach holiday that they remember when

(01:49):
they were kids. And we often find repeat visitors, intergenerational
visitors coming to enjoy Pickton, to play on the foreshore,
perhaps book a batch, go out into one of the resorts,
get out on the water. It's a really big draw card.
And of course wine is the bonus. If you don't
if you're on the water one day and you want
to have a day off, then you keep your head
into Blenham across the wider oap planes try that lovely wine.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
If what's the mix? And I don't know if you're
able to track this between international and KIWI visitors.

Speaker 3 (02:21):
Yeah, we're definitely the favorite for Kiwi visitors. We do
have a lot of internationals come in. We're a destination
particularly for that Souvignon blanc. We get specific Souvignon blanc tourists,
which always amazes me. From the internationals, and of course
we have a lot of cruise ships come in through
the Marlborosounds and pecton. But at its heart, I would

(02:41):
say we're the place that New Zealanders really love to
come on holiday, and part of that is memories. Part
of that is just that the Marlborough Sounds never fail
to disappoint and it's a lovely place for families.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
How do people if people attracted by the idea of
the Marlborough Sounds and you look at the amount of
coastline and just how intricate the sounds are, there's so
much choice in a way, isn't there? How How would
an ingenou visitor to the sounds make the decision about
where to go?

Speaker 3 (03:10):
Well, there is so much choice. I mean, as always
get online and have a look at the reviews, but
it's it's really easy. I mean, if you're a walker
and you want to walk through the Queen Charlotte Track,
I mean, where else can you walk see the sounds
and a boat will carry your pack for you from
stop to stop. It delivers it there so that when
you arrive you know all your good is everything that

(03:32):
you need is there. You don't have to carry it.
If you're a family, you know, just there's so many
holiday homes go online in book one. If you like upmarket,
you head out today of many coves, do something beautiful.
If you're just here for the day, jump on the
mail boat and do a cruise where I think the
only mailboat in New Zealand that delivers a New Zealand

(03:54):
post out there. See how the locals live out in
the Marlborough Sounds. So lots of ways to access it.
And if you just get a little family and you
don't want to go too far, pop in to pick them.
Heaps of accommodation. The foreshore is beautiful, the town's beautiful.
You can do it your way. It's easy.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
Of course, you're home to New Zealand's longest running food
and wine festival, and that's in early February. I gather,
what are the other have you got other events that
you sort of an opportunity to highlight your community in
your region.

Speaker 3 (04:27):
We have the marlbur Wine and Food kicks off on
the eighth of February again this year and it's always
a great party. It's a great way to celebrate maritime
festival and picked in on the seventeenth and eighteenth of January.
Now look, that's great fun and it's totally family focused.
Bring your family, make your own raft, go in the
raft races. There's pirates, they stress ups, there's music, there's fireworks,

(04:49):
and then the Havelock Muscle and Seafood Festival on the
eighth of March is another great festival. Havelok as the
Green greensholl mussel capital of the world and they really
know how to celebrate there. There's celebrity guests and you
can try muscles and seafood cooked every which way. So

(05:10):
there's plenty of festivals happening along the way. Not to
mention all the usual offerings. You know, pop out to
the Marker Aviation Center that the wonderful center that we're
to workshop helped design that. It's fantastic given all the events.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
As mayor, do you have to do you feel you
do you want to, what do you feel or do
you actually attend all of the events or do you
sort of have to pick and choose because it's so busy.

Speaker 3 (05:36):
I try to attend all of the events. I always said,
I go away on holiday in summer because I live
in the place that others come on holiday, and I
try to event attend all of the events. They're great,
son and there's nothing nicer than having that sense of hospitality,
you know. I like wandering around and seeing other people
enjoying what we have to offer. I feel really proud

(05:56):
of it, and so it's lovely from all sorts of
different angles.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
What about if you just want to escape for a
bit of a bit of a bit of me time.
What's your little spot that you go to.

Speaker 3 (06:09):
Well, I'm a little bit lucky that we do have
a boat. We live here in Marlborough. We live and
picked in ourselves. So I do like to get out
on the water for a little bit of me time.
But if I didn't, I would still be jumping on
the water taxi probably and popping across to Lochmarra Lodge,
which you can just get to in about fifteen minutes
Hammocks Beaches Cafe. I like to get out on the

(06:32):
water for me time.

Speaker 2 (06:33):
If I can well brilliant. Hey, Nadine's thanks so much
for your time. Have a wonderful summer. I'm sure you
will and we'll catch again sometime.

Speaker 3 (06:41):
We are and we will, and thank you so much.
It's lovely to talk to you.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
Well.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
That's Marlborough District Mayor Nadine Taylor.
