Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks be follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
We're after a region that's spent years in cyclone recovery
mode but is still so so beautiful. The Coramandal is
open for business, Cathedral Cove, Driving Creek Railway, the hot
Water Beach already for summer tims. Caramandel Mayor Peter Revel
is with me right now.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Good morning to you, Peter, Good morning and thank you
for having me on your show.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
It's a pleasure. Congratulations on the two laning of the
one way bridge in Tayrua.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Well, I think we need to give a cridit to
NCTA for that. Here's saken a long time coming, but
it will make a difference, certainly to the people in Tyrol.

Speaker 2 (00:51):
Oh. Yeah. I mean, I've got mates and Parnui who
won't come and see me because they go there's two
ridiculous one lane bridges and I don't want to get
stuck in them. But it leads me on to the
major question is the Coramandal got pummeled by the cyclones
and the roads fell apart. How are the roads generally now?

Speaker 3 (01:08):
Look, we're in great shape. We really are in great shape.
The MZTA and the council have done a lot of
work over these last two years. MZTA have officially finished
all the remedial work that they have been doing, and
there's been quite a lot. There's been one hundred and
thirty seven i think sites around the district which MZTA

(01:31):
had to attend to. But everything is working, Everything is
open and people will be able to get around the
Poininula very easily this summer, which is great news.

Speaker 2 (01:44):
So the days of cyclone recovery are well and truly over.
The question is how is the economy bounced back.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Look, it's bouncing back, but it's a long journey. I
mean we had COVID and then we had the cyclone,
and that is two very big events for any business
to cope with, hospitality businesses, retail businesses and so on.

(02:12):
But certainly we are seeing people back here on the
peninsula and that's good news. So the economically things are
heading in the right direction. We're expecting a very big
summer and that it will be very welcome by all
the businesses district for sure.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
Very good, very good. Now I am a rate payer
in your district, and I know the rates are high,
and I know why the rates are high. It's because
the peninsula is an isolated place, it's a rugged place,
and it also has a low permanent population and it
explodes over summer. So you need infrastructure that can cope.
So how can we get the rates down? Or is
that just the premium you have to pay to live

(02:53):
in Corrimandal.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
Well, look, as you know, we've just come off in
an election and we're sort of I think nine weeks
into the New Traineum and virtually everybody around the council
table campaigned on making sure that we do everything we
possibly can to reduce the rate increase rises that we
have seen over the last three or four years. I

(03:17):
have set up a marial task force specifically to look
into that, and I'd have to say at this point
I am incredibly encouraged at the work that that workforce
has done in working with staff to identify all manner
of areas where we can potentially make savings and increase
revenues to lower those rate increases. And I think as

(03:43):
we come to our doing our annual plan, which is
what we're working on, obviously, I would like to think
that when we come every timeframe that we're going to
be able to go out and consult with the public
on rate increases that are significantly lower than what we
was originally being planned and what we have experienced in

(04:03):
the last few years. But whilst all that's important and
we will achieve that, we also are absolutely committed to
delivering the services that are needed on the district in
the district around roading and waste and water, et cetera,
et cetera.

Speaker 2 (04:21):
All right, if you're coming to Coramandel, we all know
the hot spots. I've already mentioned some of them, but
what's the secret spot that you could recommend?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
The beach at Tora is just fantastic. Please swim between
the fleets, but you know it's absolutely fantastic. And you
know it's not just the beaches on the East coast,
and there are truckloads of them down the East Coast
which are just world class beaches. But you know, we've
got the West coast where we've got those rocky coves
and the fantastic fishing in the first and the course.

(04:53):
Then there's the bike trails through the hills, the fitty
Inger Bike Park, the Torimental Bike Park are terrific facilities.
So there's all that. There's the food and drink that
we have well, I think for the culinary offerings we
have around the district at the summer, and then there

(05:14):
is the history. But of course these are people and
I can guarantee you if you come to the Coromandel
you will get a very very warm welcome.

Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yes you will. Peter Revel Teams, Coramandel Mayor. I thank
you for your time and joining us on the summer
Breakfast today terrific.
