You're listening to a podcast from News Talks Be follow
this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
The crematorium that has been proposed for the middle of
Havelock North village, there is a group that is rather
upset about this crematorium. So there's a funeral parlor there
as it stands, they want to create a crematorium and
it has gone through a non unnotified a process. So
the group spokesperson will have a chat to Andrew is
(00:37):
on the line, Andrew, I take it we're speaking to
Andrew Fulford.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
Is that right? Yeah, that's right.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Hi, good to chat with you. So you're the spokesperson
for this group who is objecting to this crematorium.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Yeah, correct, one of the spokespersons.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Didn't I And on what grounds are you objecting to it?
What's your problem with it?
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Shooting an utterly location and a little bit of the
process that the council went through, a lack of process
that the council went through in terms of grinding the consents.
So I don't know if you guys are familiar with
have Lock North, but it's not a large place, but
it's fairly intense in terms of its development, a lot
of cafes, lot of restaurants, eateries, child kicker centers. It's
(01:23):
and it's also got quite a special character. It's been
a village for quite some time, or have that village
fueled to it and quite intimate and not spread over
a large area. And the issue here is the crematorium
is effectively going in the middle of this particular town.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
So you think it's an eyesore? Is that the problem?
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Well, it's a feedex really it's not. Yeah, I mean,
the funeral home has been there for quite some time,
but you know it's a step up to be starting
to discharge the sect to be human remains into the
local atmosphere. And there's within one hundred and fifty meter
circle of this particular facility there's thirteen food outlets and too.
Speaker 4 (02:09):
So what actually what actually comes out the chimney of
a crematorium?
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, well that's that's a good question. I mean, obviously
it is a combustion product from human bodies, and you know,
the technology these days of obviously it is better than
what has been in times past. But I used to
work beside a crematorium not that long ago, and some
of the things that you saw coming out of the
(02:35):
chimney that were just dreadful.
Speaker 4 (02:37):
What did you see coming out of the chimney, Well.
Speaker 3 (02:40):
Just copious quantities of black smoke. If it was it
was a nice still day, no ear movement, the smoke
would go up, you know, fifty meters or so, then
just slowly settled back down and see over all the
houses around the neighborhood. And the smell was at times
you could smell very easy. What was I mean there
was there were blue smells, and there were other smells
(03:00):
as well as obviously the coffins and things were burning.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
Has this particular funeral home that's wanting to run the
crematorium given any feedback on what will be coming out
the chimney, how much black smoke, how much smell in
the area and such.
Speaker 3 (03:17):
They have, I mean, part of their consent process was
that the regional Local Regional Council had to look at
the consent and in lots of work was done in
terms of presenting data that supported it it wouldn't be
a problem. And you know that may be the case
that the provisor is that apparently for the discharges to
(03:38):
be within consent limits, there have to be a degree
of maintenance done with filters, et cetera. You know, there
is a risk that that moments may not be done
as proper should be. You know that previous listener pointed
out there's variance that in terms of what actually is
happening in the crematorium itself of what comes out of
(03:58):
the chimney.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
So are you worried about it being next to the supermarket?
That has been a point made in this particular article.
Is that true to you? Do you care that it's
opposite a supermarket?
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Not just the supermarket? I mean, like I say, it's
the actual overall location in general, it's just it's just
something that that and it's quite a significant number of residents.
It's not just the group, but it's just something that
is seen as not necessary and have locked north. I mean,
there's much better locations for a facility like that. You know,
(04:31):
I actually haven't as yet come across anybody that thought
it was a good idea to have a prematorium there,
apart from one of your previous listeners.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
So going back to the previous listener, so she said
that there's a McDonald's there, there's a coffee roasters, and
there's a service station. So there's already quite a lot
of you know, I guess commercial activity in that area,
and it's kind of a semi industrial zone. Is that correct?
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Well, that's that's another little bone of contention because it
is us it is an industrial zone, but it's tiny.
I mean, there would there would be probably a couple
of hectores in total of industrial area inside a commercial area.
So the council saying, well, it's an industry are so
let's put it here. But really, you know, you've only
got to go twenty meters either way and you're outside
that industrial zone and you're into commercial properly in terms
(05:20):
of cafes, restaurants, each of his like say, childcare centers, etcetera.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
We're talking to Andrew, who's one of the objectives to
this crematorium and have Lock North. Now, Andrew, what do
you say too? There's a bunch of texts coming through
and there's a bit of a reputation around Havelock North.
This is just an example, guys. The problem is with
people complaining they're just passing it up as disrespectful typical
of Havelock North. Precious.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's funny when you look at
the comments that I've seen on Facebook regarding this sort
of thing. And yeah, people laugh like they have a
laugh at have Lock North residence or have a lot
that they've got. It's a bit like some more pumpsib
I guess in terms of that sort of feeling up here.
(06:07):
So yeah, we get a bit of flat for that well.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
As some of the flat Andrew like this team. I'm
from Hawk's Bay. I'm from Napier, twenty minutes from Havelock.
I can assure you have lock people have far too
much spare time and focus on complaining instead of smiling
for what they have. And the most expensive area of
Hawk's Bay hashtag snobs.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I can't argue without it all.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Very diplomatic and what are your next steps Andrew and
opposing this crematorium.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
Well, we've The unfortunate thing is that once the consent
has been granted, it is very very difficult to change it.
In fact, the only way to change it, the conceit
we'll get it revoked is to go through a judicial
review in the High Court, and of course that takes
copies quantities of money. We've got some financial resources and
we've been offered some financial resources from vested interests with
(07:02):
properties near the place, and just going back to your
previous listen, I mean I've spoken to two developers who
have property interests in this area and they're quite concerned.
So they see it as a negative, quite a strong
negative in terms of what they're trying to do with
property in Havelock North and adjacent to these particular this
particular issue. So you know, it's not seen by them
as a positive thing. Yeah, and you know we will
(07:25):
We'll just see how it goes. If we can manage
to put the money together the years, we would possibly
go down that route of a judicial review.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
Okay, well, they thank you so much for you call
Andrew and putting forward your case. We appreciate it, all right,
thank you, have a great afternoon.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
That is Andrew Fulford. He is one of the spokespeople
of this Havelock North group who is objecting the crematorium
being developed in the middle of Havelock North.
