This is NEWSFACS in this update. Today is the summer's
most accident prone day. Acc data shows over the past
five years, New Year's Day accidents have prompted more than
twenty seven thousand claims. New Year's Eve takes second place
with nearly twenty three thousand injury reports. Acc Injury Prevention

Major electricity companies are taking a big step today towards
protecting national energy security under agreements made by Genesis with Mercury,
Meridian and Contact and Emergency Coal reservers being established at
Puntley Power Station. The Commerce Commission approved the deals in November.
Genesis Chief executive Malcolm john says they allow the company

to make significant needed investment to keep all generation units operating.

It does mean that the very large generation units at
company that we're going into retirement are now going to
be around for another decade.

The Electoral Commissions encouraging eligible voters to enroll early before
this year's general election. Under voting law changes taking effect today,
enrollment will now close thirteen days before the election. Voters
had been allowed to sign up right until the day.
Chief Electoral Officer Carl la Kaine says students in particular
should get this sorted out quickly.

We're encouraging students who might be moving in the new
year particularly look at whether you are enrolled and if
you are, to update your addresses if you're moving for study.

And MB is urging employers to know their obligations during
the holiday period. Most employees working a public holiday like
today are entitled to be paid time and a half
and an additional paid day off. Compliance manager David Milne
says there's a spy and complaints during the holidays with
employers not meeting expectations.

out to retailers and employers to make sure that there
are wares of obligations in how they treat their workers.
