Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good afternoon. I'm railing Ramsey. This is your afternoon news
fix for Thursday, the thirteenth of November. The Regulatory Standards
Bill has just passed its final vote in Parliament, supported
by the Coalition. Those opposing include Independent MPs Tukuza Ferris
and Maria Menoor Kapakini, no longer voting for the party

(00:24):
Mardi and there was a fiery last parliamentary debate on
the contentious bill. Regulation Minister David Seymour says restrictions across
our society are immense.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
It is the teachers who say all I wanted to
do was help young New Zealanders reach their potential, and
all I actually do is fill out forms and comply
with bureaucracy.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
Labour's Duncan Weber's promising they'll repeal the bill in his
party's first one hundred days in power.

Speaker 3 (00:52):
The critics who were overwhelming in the Select committee process.
Less than one percent of the submitters supported this bill.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
In a week of bad news for police, Commissioner Richard
Chambers has today paid an eighty dollars speeding fine he
copped last Thursday. Chambers was caught driving an unmarked police
vehicle at one hundred and eleven kilometers an hour on
State Highway too. In Wellington, Dennica McLean has more.

Speaker 4 (01:21):
Commissioner Richard Chambers was heading to the airport from a
dog graduation. He says he had a lot on his mind,
but it's no excuse and he felt terrible putting officers
in that situation. Chambers says it's the dumbest thing he's
done since taking on the top job. He's told new
constables at a graduation today, we all make mistakes, but
can learn from them.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
The US House of Representatives have voted to when the
longest government shut down in history. Six Democrats crossed the
aisle to pass the funding bill, which Donald Trump has
promised to sign soon. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson
has apologized for the disruption caused by the shutdown. To
the many American families who were made to go hungry
over the last several week weeks are troops and other

(02:01):
federal employees who are wondering where their next peacheck would
come from.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
We're sorry that it took this long.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
A proposal to enroll children in key we savor at
birth to improve our savings efforts. The Institute for Democratic
and Economic Analysis has put out a report proposing different models.
They include a kickstart government payment as well as matching
parental contributions. Research director Max Rashbrooks says it could make

(02:26):
a significant difference.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
You could pretty realistically expect young people to be hitting
eighteen worth ten or twenty thousand dollars in their accounts
and so then they'd be well on their way to
first home deposit and saving for their retirement.

Speaker 1 (02:40):
The government is linking migration figures to its drive to
grow the economy. More than seventy two thousand New Zealanders
left in the year to September, a majority crossing the
ditch to Australia. Labour blames it on higher pay and
more jobs overseas. Finance Minister Nikola Will has suggest more
jobs are on the way. That's exactly why we need

(03:00):
to grow the economy. So there are more jobs and
opportunities here at home and I expect that we will
see that happening to sport and football firms. Coach Michael
Man says he's embracing the chance to create further depth
in the upcoming two match series against Australia's Matilda's first five.
Carter Gordon's revealed his return to the Wallabies has been

(03:21):
vital for his mental health after being sidelined for the
better part of two years with a neck injury due
to a spinal fluid leak. American High school senior Kai
Trump says her granddad Donald Trump has told her not
to be nervous as she makes her LPGA tour debut
on a sponsor's exemption in Florida this weekend as an
eighteen year old amateur golfer. That is your latest news fix.

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Medal of Honor: Stories of Courage

Rewarded for bravery that goes above and beyond the call of duty, the Medal of Honor is the United States’ top military decoration. The stories we tell are about the heroes who have distinguished themselves by acts of heroism and courage that have saved lives. From Judith Resnik, the second woman in space, to Daniel Daly, one of only 19 people to have received the Medal of Honor twice, these are stories about those who have done the improbable and unexpected, who have sacrificed something in the name of something much bigger than themselves. Every Wednesday on Medal of Honor, uncover what their experiences tell us about the nature of sacrifice, why people put their lives in danger for others, and what happens after you’ve become a hero. Special thanks to series creator Dan McGinn, to the Congressional Medal of Honor Society and Adam Plumpton. Medal of Honor begins on May 28.
