From the newstalks had been Newsroom this is newsbacks In
this update, a police investigation is underway following a mass
brawl in Auckland's Karrangahapi Road which left three people in hospital.
The fight involved more than fifty people and included three
serious assaults. A twenty one year old has been charged
(00:24):
with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but others remain
at large. Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greeves says thereafter any
footage or witnesses of the incident to identify the offenders.
Gisbon Police are deploying the Eagle helicopter and placing more
offices on the road to combat reckless driving over New Year.
(00:45):
The aircraft gives them better vision across the area and
rapid response capability As people flock to celebrations such as
rhythm and vines. Their message is firm dangerous driving won't
be tolerated. Commander Superintendent Jeanette Parks says they're already aware
of planned gatherings involving boy races. She says there will
(01:05):
be consequences for dangerous drivers, such as impounded vehicles, infringement
notices and charges. Police and Hamilton have intercepted a twenty
nine year old woman who allegedly tried to steal more
than seventeen hundred dollars worth of groceries today. The offender
had already driven off by the time police arrived after
(01:25):
verbally abusing staff trying to prevent the theft. Police tracked
down her car, which was full of the groceries, at
a perke they address and found the women in the house.
She'll appear and caught an early January charge with shoplifting.
Workers in other industries may be putting their feet up
for a summer break, but hospitality is knuckling down for
(01:46):
its busiest time of year. Hospitality New Zealand says spending
in Auckland lifted thirteen percent from winter to summer last
year and jumped a significant one hundred and fifty seven
percent for holiday hotspots like Thames. Corrimandal spokesperson Sam McKinnon
says the seasonal revenue boost depends heavily on location.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
It's a crucial time of year to make sure that
you've got enough cash in the bank to manage the
down season. We're hopeful that the summer season will be strong,
but also to recover from some of the challenges of
the past few years and get businesses into a stronger
financial position.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
That's news a sport. The Otago Sparks cricketers lead the
early running in the women's T twenty Supersmash competition, topping
the table after a second straight win. Otago have thrashed
the winless Central Hines by seven wickets, easily chasing down
the visitor's subpar target in Alexandra. The Sparks finished on
(02:39):
one hundred and seventeen for three inside fifteen overs. Coach
Steve Corricker was a notable absentee from this morning's Auckland
FC training ahead of their A League home game against
the Newcastle Jets on Thursday. He was struck down with
sickness ahead of the New Year's Day clash. Assistant Auckland
coach Danny Hayes says Barker's absence is uncharacteristic. There's obviously
(03:03):
a little bit of a barge with some sort of
flu going around at the moment, so he's bedridden, which
is very unlikely not to be able to make a
training session, so you know, it's really sick. That's sport.
