Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
news fix for Thursday, the eighth of May. A bleak
snapshot of staffing at secondary schools as teachers push for
better pay. The annual PPTA survey shows more than a
third of schools have staff teaching subjects they aren't specialists.
In thirty percent of teaching vacancies had no suitable applicants.

President Chris Abercrombie says it's an important time to bargain
for better salaries to get people into the profession and
it will also bring back people. There is thousands of
thousands of X teachers who would want to come back
to the classroom if the paying conditions were right. All
eyes are on Pakistan's response to military attacks from India
on Pakistan and Kashmir. India says its retaliation for a

terrorist attack that killed twenty six last month. India claims
its demonstrated restraint. BBC South Asia correspondent Samara Hussain says
after reports of artillery shelling, onlookers are nervously waiting to
see what Pakistan does next. This is a real concern

A Ministerial Advisory Group expert believes New Zealand's failure to
curb criminal activity isn't due to a lack of trying.
The group's second report criticizes our response to modern crime
and money laundering. It shows the cash and assets seized
by police are just four point two percent of the
one point six billion dollars that criminals make each year.

Group chair lawyer Steve Simon says police are doing an
excellent job but need more tools. By international standards, that
four point two percent is actually very good. It's just
not good enough to move the dial to disrupt organized crime.
A fire investigator has been called to a work and
income building that went up in flames today in Auckland's Glenniness.

Fire broke out about seven am at the Mayfair Place
