Good afternoon. I'm Malcolm Jordan and this is your midday
news fix for Monday, the twenty eighth of July. An
advocate says fearful prison inmates are acting to try and
make themselves safer. Corrections figures show twelve thousand prisoner requests
to be segregated were accepted in the twenty twenty three
financial year. That's sixty six percent higher on four years earlier.

People Against Prisons Altauro's Emi Rackety says inmates are scared
they'll be targeted for gang affiliations, or for not being
in one, or for their sexuality.

If this is one of the few tools and incursion
of people have got to try to control their exposure
to violence, and then of course they're going to use it.
What I want to know is why there are no
better alternative.

Chris Luxon says the government still finalizing the details on

a twenty year old man died in Rotorua Hospital on
Saturday evening after being found injured on a roadside. Police

are speaking with four men who found him. They'd like
to hear from any witnesses to a crash on State
Highway thirty three between five and seven pm. A growing
number of households are struggling to cover the rising costs
to heat and power their homes. Later STATSNZED figures show
energy prices have been rising much faster than incomes this century.

Household energy prices have increased about one hundred and seventy
one percent in twenty five years, Wages and salaries have
only increased about eighty percent. More than one hundred thousand
Kiwis are struggling to pay their bills, but major electricity

Bargaining will take place today between Health New Zealand and
the Nurses organization ahead of a twenty four hour strike
starting Wednesday. More than thirty six thousand union members are
set to walk off the job. The US and the
EU have stepped back from the brink of a potential
trade war and have struck a deal in Scotland for
a fifteen percent tariff on EU goods imported to the US.

US and buy more energy. Nelson Tasman is in line
for yet more heavy rain. Met Service says a front
moving east across the country is expected to bring severe
weather for many areas from late today until early Wednesday.
