Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning. I never ready Manu, and this is your
morning news fix for Wednesday, fourth of June. In this update,
although visitors spending is on the rise, some parts of
New Zealand are still doing it tough at Government surveys
found international visitors spending increased by ten percent and contributed
more than twelve billion dollars to the economy in the

(00:26):
year ending March. That's nine point two percent up on
the previous year. It reflects an increase in international visitors
topping three point three million arrivals, up from almost three
point two million. Queen's Tewl Mayor Glynn Lewis told Ryan
Bridge it's good news but also highlights the uneven nature
of the spend across New Zealand. I think we had

(00:47):
a little bit more effort to try and collaborate more
between different regions and see if we spread the love.
The government's firing a warning shot to state owned companies
asking them to improve their returns. Responsible for SOE Simeon
Brown has told NZ Post and Landcorp. The government is
disappointed and concerned by their performances in documents released by Treasury.

(01:10):
He adds they need to deliver a bold and challenging
turnaround plan. Active leader David Seymour says the government has
to ask questions about how these companies are performing the
country's drink packaging waste could be halved, currently making up
a quarter of all litter. New international comparison research shows
this can be reduced by introducing a container deposit return

(01:33):
scheme adopted by more than fifty other countries. Slovakia's scheme
currently allows people to claim back a deposit of twenty
six New Zealand cents on each bottle, or can they
return zero Waste Network advocates Sue Coots says surveys show
eighty percent of keywc demand for one here. When you
see that visible dishow around most New Zealanders makes you

(01:54):
feel bad. You know, you don't like to think that
you're living in a place which has gone a lot
of rubbish lying around. Clark Foundation says infrastructure spending needs
a rethink. A report from the organization argues that more
needs to be invested in infrastructure maintenance rather than new projects.
Foundation deputy director Karlie Mercier says renewals and repairs are

(02:14):
much cheaper, and she says they's no need to be
chasing glamorous new projects, believe tertiary students should qualify for
the government's winter energy payment. Victoria University Student Association has
relaunched a petition calling for the group's inclusion. Beneficiaries are
able to get up to thirty two dollars a week
to help heat homes in the winter, while students are ineligible.

(02:37):
Wealthy A Vice president Josh Robinson says that they first
launched the petition last winter after seeing students struggle to
afford heating for their flats. Since then, we've seen that
the government continues the neglection poverty and outright neglect the
energy proverty crisis. That's a New Zealand, especially with the
recent budget announcements and sport defending champion Eggish Fiontech and

(02:58):
world number one arena Sublenka. We'll meet in a semi
final at the French Tennis Open after advancing through the
last eight. Jackson Ford has replaced injured co captain Mitch
Barnett in the Warriors front row to face the Sharks
an NRL League on Saturday. All Black Luke Jacobson has
re signed with New Zealand Rugby for another two years

(03:18):
until the end of twenty twenty seven, football's lawmakers have
ruled penalties scored when a player accidentally touches the ball
twice must be retaken. I'm never retty Manu, and that
your latest newsworks will be back with the next update
at midday from the Newstalks ZB newsroom
