Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning, I never ready Manu and this is your
morning news WIX for Wednesday, seventh of May. In this update,
the oppositions laying into legislation to lift the threshold for
pay equity claims of gender discrimination. It's being dealt with
under urgency and is expected to have its third reading
this morning. Last night, Labour's Ingrid Larry says the bill

(00:25):
will immediately write off thirty three active pay equity claims.
This shocking, despicable, backward announcement was made that puts the
rights of women in this country back into the dark.
Ages Workplace Relations Minister Brook van Walden says she's trying
to make the claim system more robust. The current threshold
is too low, it's not robust and it's less workable.

(00:48):
And the decisions expected today around the conduct of teparty
MALDI MPs during the first vote of the Treaty Principals Bill,
the party's co leaders debbing Ardy with Packer, why Waitetti
and MP Hanna raffiti. MP Clark performed a hukka during
voting on the now ded bill. Last year, Tair Parti
Maudi has leaked proceedings of the committee on social media

(01:12):
Parliament's Privileges Committee is meeting tonight to deliberate their actions.
Committee member Winston Peters is not impressed with the fact
Tair Parti Maudi has been planning an alternative hearing outside
of the committee.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
No doubt you'll flog along to the circus, yes, but
we're not part of that. We're part of the most
serious committee in this Parliament.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
And in a post on social media, Tair Party Maudi
says with the House going into urgency today, it won't
be able to host its alternative hearing today as intended.
Another sign of struggling economic recovery, with unemployment rates expected
to reach the highest levels in almost a decade. This
morning's data is expected to show increased rates during the

(01:51):
March quarter to around five point two percent. Enzid Herald
Business editor at large Liam Dan says the numbers are ugly.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
I think we're looking at somewhere around one hundred and
six ty thousand people who are unemployed. It's not a
nice thing when unemployment is rising, but it is part
of the economic cycle.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
Dan says it could indicate further interest rate cuts are
needed and the peak may not be seen till next quarter.
Almost half of schools across New Zealand have a vape
store within walking distance, despite recent legislation aimed at preventing this.
Auckland University research shows forty four percent of schools have
won within a kilometer. In twenty twenty three, the government

(02:29):
passed a law banning specialist vape stores from opening within
three hundred meters of schools, but existing shops are allowed
to continue operating. Study lead Ronan Payanda says they've identified
big gaps in the current law, and he says other
shops like supermarkets and dairies can be as close as
they like to schools. In sports, Silver Fern's captain Emelia

(02:50):
and Echinacio is calling for overseas based Grace Weke to
receive an exemption from the Netball New Zealand Board to
continue her international career. Wallaby's coach Joe Schmidt has hinted
Crusaders playmaker James O'Connor could make his international rugby return
against the Lions this winter. The thirty four year old
last played for Australia in twenty twenty two. Triathlon New

(03:11):
Zealand boss Pete de Vett remains optimistic Hayden Wilde will
recover swiftly from a bike crash in Japan. I'm never ready, Marho,
and then your latest news weikx. We'll be bank with
the next update at midday from the newstalk ZB newsroom
