Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodar Keys Off the Record podcast with Greg.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Adam Hataway. Where are you
the scene? Because I know you're from christ Church, but
you've flown somewhere.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I have arrived and Tom Kee mccaro for this gig
we've got tomorrow night and we're just sitting in the
Kiwi International Hotel.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
All right, what's that place like?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
It's okay?

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Yeah, comfortable seat to be sitting in.

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yeah, I'm know. The seat to Gret that's the best part.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
The best part is the seat awesome. And how was
the flight?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
It was absolutely fine. I hadn't been on a plane
for a while, so it was actually kind of exciting
to remember that we you know, I have shows to do,
tours to see too.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
Did you get a window seat?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
No, but my girlfriend did.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
It was a good flight, excellent. And how's christ Change
been since we last scored up? You've been releasing material,
You've been touring. What's been going on for you these
last few months?

Speaker 3 (00:58):
In the summer we put out a compilation because we
put out five albums and five years or something, So
we got to an end of the last year and
we'd only released a single and then we thought, well,
maybe we should do a compilation. Maybe a good way
for people to find their way in to hear what
we're all about. It actually features a song, a duet
with John too Good. I believe you had on the

(01:18):
here today.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
Yeah, yeah, it was just in yesterday with the big show,
so yeah, that's right. I think we caught up just
around about the time you were releasing that song.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
About all that. Yeah that was that was only like
so that was only last December.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Yeah, right.

Speaker 3 (01:34):
I just saw that he was on today and then
I thought, oh, that's cool because I know that you
guys played that song.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
We gave it a few blasts across the summertime. So
just recap, how did you and John hook up?

Speaker 3 (01:44):
We did these come together shows? M M yeah right,
you know I did the Tom Petty one and he
was doing that nice, and so was Milan Borich who
is playing with us tomorrow night, and Dane Swan was
the other singer. Well, I think I did two of
those little mini tours for that and he was in
both of them. And then I just had the song

(02:05):
that I thought would suit him.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
And yeah, and now you've come up with another song
this year called High Horse and it's another collaboration.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
This features Ernie Bell, who's also from your Fine City.
It just came about how anythan does I.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Guess through the powers of the universe.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, that's yep, there's a good way. There's a good
way of looking at them.

Speaker 2 (02:28):
And did you because she lives in Auckland, you live
in christ Church, did you get together to create the music? Order?
Do you do it remotely?

Speaker 3 (02:36):
Actually that's a good question.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:37):
We recorded in Diamond Harbor and Christich and then I
was here rehearsing for one of those come together shows.
So it all, you know, it all comes together. And
I realized that, oh, yeah, we did. We wanted to
get someone, let's get any Bell she would perfect. I
caught her up and said can you come to the
studio and then we just smashed out in an hour.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Wow, I was here, So you had her in mind
for the song? What made you think of the song?
How did it get into your brain?

Speaker 3 (03:03):
This one was actually written by Almore who's in my band.
We write kind of fifty to fifty of the material
and he wrote this one. I don't really I have
no idea what it's about. I just sit there and
let the money roll in while I sing his beautiful gibberish.

Speaker 2 (03:16):
And he's one of the Haunters, is he.

Speaker 3 (03:18):
Yeah, So this is this song that we're putting out,
this high Horse song, I think for the next wee while.
It's just going to be build as a solo thing.
It's just my name, but he's always there writing and
recording with me.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
Right, So normally it's Adam Hataway and the Haunters, but
this song Adam Hataway period.

Speaker 3 (03:34):
Was taken on them. Yeah, even though I didn't write
the song.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Earny bells on it as well. Yeah, cool, Well should
we check it out?

Speaker 3 (03:42):
It's gonna have High Horse by Adam Hadaway. That's me
on radio holding bang on it on a little.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
Of course.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
It's ready a hearde that is brand new from Adam Hataway.
It's called high Horse featuring Ernie Bell and we're lucky
enough to have Adam on a zoom with us now,
killer Adam, thanks for bringing us that tune.

Speaker 3 (04:25):
Yeah, thanks for playing.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
You are in Auckland already, I mean you normally live
in christ Church, but you've come up early to soundcheck
and rehearse and prepare for a gig that's on and
Timaki Makoto tomorrow night.

Speaker 3 (04:37):
It's one of the last shows to ever happen at
the Wine Cellar. Wow, and got my band coming up,
got Milan Boricks opening, So I mean it's gonna be
a fun night.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yeah. So Milan from Pluto.

Speaker 3 (04:49):
What time is he On's eight thirty and so he's
just doing an acoustic set by himself. I think he's
doing it as a jewel, right.

Speaker 2 (04:59):
And then you're at the stage, what nine thirty, ten o'clock.

Speaker 3 (05:03):
I'm more like quarter past nine, nine twenty.

Speaker 2 (05:07):
Yeah, And how much of tickets to get in.

Speaker 3 (05:09):
Twenty five dollars or or fifteen on a wag You've
got twenty five or fifteen.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
That's a good deal to see.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
And Adam Hataway at the Wine Cellar in Auckland, which
is closing after thirty years.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
That's how it goes. I get they're actually merging. They're
just going to be whammy Bar now, isn't it. It's
they're not closing for the reasons why everywhere else is closing,
is it?

Speaker 2 (05:32):
No? I think they're busting down the walls. And you're right,
the whammy Bar, which has always been next door, is
going to basically swallow up the wine cellar and become
one bigger beast of a whammy. Yeah, which is exciting.
Have you played the wine cellar before?

Speaker 3 (05:48):
I think twice?

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Right there you go.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
Yeah, I think I've played in Auckland got five times,
and two of the times have been the wine cellar.
It's always been a really nice vibe. So it'll be
great to test out some new stuff tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Oh yeah, so you've got the new song high Horse
that we just played before. Are there other new songs
that you'll be playing in the set?

Speaker 3 (06:07):
Oh, there's always new stuff. There's always Yeah. We'd like
to keep we've got to keep it fresh.

Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah. Well, you mentioned before that you released five albums
over five years. It sounds like you're just as prolific
this year and there's more to come.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Oh yeah, yeah, never stop.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
So with that in mind, can you give us a
teaser of perhaps when the next album might be released
in September, November something like that. Okay, all right, good
to know. We'll keep that in mind in the springtime.
What sort of things are inspiring you at the moment.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Well, I've been listening to Warren Devon.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
You know who introduced me to Warren Zevon was this
I don't know if you remember the show, The Late
Show with David Lederman, he was a.

Speaker 3 (06:47):
Yeah, was that his last performance?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah? You got him on a few times, but yeah,
you got the last time as well. And so what's
got you back into Warren again?

Speaker 3 (06:55):
Because I've been Milana and I have actually been recording
some Warren's Evon songs together. It's for fun. I mean,
I'm hoping you turn it into approach. It's a pretty
strange thing, you know, project to do, but I'm wanting
to tend it into a proper recording. I've just always
loved him, and every now and then I get hooked
back in and I just think he's such an amazing
mixture of heart fout, earnest songwriting and black humor and

(07:19):
just weird, quirky stuff. It's just kind of like it's
the spot in many ways for me. I've also been
reading the Stephen King novels The Dark Tower. I'm not
sure if that's inspiring me for my stuff, but I
have been loving it. It's kind of like Lord of
the Rings for adults, but it's got like Western Have
you heard of those books? Is there a movie oh yeah,
but it's really bad apparently as well. Yeah, it's really

(07:40):
it looks really bad and apparently it is. And it's
seven books and it's sure. It's like a universe. It's
like it's on universe and it's really good. And I
also found out that he was really good friends with
Warren's Evon. So that's been my little world for the
last few weeks.

Speaker 2 (07:54):
Right, So we might hear some songs about where wolves
are about Lord of the Rings all grown up.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, it's like sexy Lord of the Rings Flunder Eastwood
type characters.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
So you've got the gig in Auckland tomorrow night at
the Wine Cellar. Beyond that, and there are any other
shows coming up that we should keep in mind.

Speaker 3 (08:13):
We're just playing in christ Church on Saturday for the
same for the same show.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah great, this Saturday whereabouts at the Wonder Bar, great venue.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Yeah it's yeah, it's so good to play. So those
are those of the only Tish shows we've got.

Speaker 2 (08:26):
Adam Hathaway, so prolific. If we want to catch up
with you tomorrow night in Auckland or this Saturday night
in christ Church, or check out that new song that
we just played before high Horse. Where's the best place
to find some information on you.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Facebook ig as the kids call it, and band camp
where you can buy those those records and stuff.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, so you've got vinyl releases on the band camp.

Speaker 3 (08:48):
We do. We've got seven inches coming out. We're actually, yeah,
this singles coming out on seven inch, which we haven't
done before. Our good buddy Matthias who has leather Jacot
Records in christ Church, He's putting it out on siphaninch.
So we'll be selling those. We'll be selling those like
little hot cakes at the shows.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
I'm sure what a great new cylinder here is. And
