Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodar Keys Off the Record podcast with Greg.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Beatty Rays Cureda Lewis.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Gooday, there are you going? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Really well? Thanks mate? Now where in the world are you?
Speaker 4 (00:15):
I am currently on the Gold Coast in Queensland, a
bit far away from where I'm from at the oone.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I'm just visiting my brother.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
All right, So you're in the Goldie. Where are you from?
Speaker 4 (00:24):
So I'm from a little town called Redland Bay, which
is about halfway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The
little coastal town, nothing too special about it, but that's
where our band name comes from.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
Betty Ray's Ready Bay.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
So yeah, nice and your band coming to New Zealand soon.
We want to find out more about you, guys. How
long have you been a thing?
Speaker 3 (00:41):
We've been a thing for quite a long time.
Speaker 4 (00:43):
It sort of started out probably when we started our
apprenticeships back in the day when we left high school.
We sort of just mucking around, playing covers and playing
in mates backyards and stuff. I only sort of started
to take it a bit more seriously around the twenty
seventeen mark when we released our EP, and then yeah,
you know, around in Australia quite a bit, and we
finally got to go overseas last year.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
Where'd you go? Last year?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
We went to Europe and the UK.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
We supported the June Rats on their I think they
called it the World Rampage Tour or something like that.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, that was excellent.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Was it a rampage?
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Absolutely? It was. It was. It was a rampage on
our well being, that's for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
How was touring life? Because obviously Europe's a massive place.
You've got different cultures, different accents, different people. How did
they respond to the Batty Rays?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
Look, it was excellent.
Speaker 4 (01:32):
Like, we weren't really expecting anyone to know who the
heck we are, so when there was a few people
that showed up that you know, were actually singing back
our lyrics and stuff, it was it.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Was a really really good surprise.
Speaker 4 (01:42):
And yeah, for some of us it was our first
time actually being overseas, so it was it was all
a big, a big learning curve and like a big
character building experience. It was really really good and we
can't wait to do it again.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, nice man. So how many of you are in
the Batty Rays.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
There's four of us, So there's me, my name's Louis.
I play guitar.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
We've got Jacko who plays tu tarr and sings, got
Brad on the bass guitar, and then we've got Benny,
our drummer.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
And together you've come up with this song sober Coaster,
which I'm sure you'll play here when you come to
New Zealand soon.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
I think Jacko just grabbed an acoustic guitar and just
started having a strum out on the front deck of
my house and we were just having to play around it.
We just wanted to sort of write a song that
you know, was pretty timeless and something that you could,
you know, throw your arm around you made at a
festival and sing along too. And yeah, so because it
came about and yeah, it's like it's not too serious
(02:37):
of a song. It's just like a really fun, you know,
summary sort of sound, and yeah, we just wanted to
capture that and yeah, make it a bang up.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
It's a great name. I mean, roller Coaster, sober Coaster.
It's yeah, it's really good.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Yeah. Yeah, absolutely, it's sort of a mix between the two,
isn't it.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Yeah, Yeah, was that your idea?
Speaker 4 (02:55):
No, I can't take credit for that. I think I
think that was I think it was either Jacko or
Bennie that came up with the name right.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
And sonically, what are we in for? You mentioned it's
got a summer vibe.
Speaker 4 (03:04):
Look, my favorite part is like the musical break towards
the end, how we all sort of have a little
bit of a go, and like when we play it live,
it's really fun because you know, we sort of play
that musical break at the end and then sort of
brings it back down and then the crowd gets to
sing along at the end, and those sing alongs are always
just bloody priceless to be a part of.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
Well for anyone who hasn't heard the song before. And
what are we going to be singing along? Can you
give us just a couple of lyrics to hang on to?
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Absolutely so, I want to spend my lifetime drinking beers
in sunshine. That's pretty easy to learn that one. And
I think we all, I think we all can relate
a little bit to that.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
Absolutely. Well, let's find out more about when you're coming
in New Zeeland shortly, but first the tune from the
Betty Rays This is sober cost on radio headache. I
want to spend my time.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Drinking bees and sunshine.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
And well on a sober.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Coaster it's ready ahdarchy And that's a tune from the
Betty Rays called sober Coaster. And we're lucky enough to
have Lewis, who played the guitar on that track on
a zoom with us now all the way over from Australia.
We're from Lewis. Thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (04:31):
No drumas at all. I hope you enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
Yeah, man, you've been playing that song for a few
years now, and you mentioned that you played in Europe
last year. Did did they pick up on it? Did
they get into it?
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Absolutely? Yeah, that one's always a crowd favorite. And yeah,
even overseas apparently they like to drink beers in the
sunshine as well, funnily enough, so yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:50):
You know what we do as well here in New Zealand.
I don't know if you've heard there. Have you been
to New Zealand before?
Speaker 4 (04:54):
I have not, so Brad our bass player and Jack
Hard singer I have when they were a bit younger,
and they say nothing good things about it. But me
and Benny we haven't been over yet, so we're really
really looking forward to seeing your beautiful country.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah. Cool?
Speaker 2 (05:06):
And which parts are you going to see.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
Ragland. Yeah, man, that's a real surfy town. Are you
guys into surfing?
Speaker 4 (05:41):
I can't surf for the life of me, but I
love love watching it and love going for a swim
at the beach, that's for sure.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
Well, it might be a bit cold, but if you've
got a whet suit or you're just a brave person,
you could hit out into the waves. I'm just thinking.
Because you name yourself after a bay called what was
it called Reddy Bay?
Speaker 4 (05:57):
Yeah, it's called Redland Bay. But we affectionately and as
ready by yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
Sure, I mean you affictionately add or chop off letters
to names that I mean, didn't you say there's someone
in the band called Jacko?
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Yes, yes, there's Jacko. Yeah. We also have to previout
our names a bit. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
So Betty Rays is the name of the band, and
we've got if you're anyone in christ Church, get under
the tunnel, let to Littleton next Thursday, to Wellington next Friday,
Auckland next weekend and Ragland as well. Ragland is a
real party town despite it being a Sunday night. I
reckon you'll get a good crowd there.
Speaker 3 (06:30):
Well, I'm looking forward to that because we love a
good party.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
If we want to check out those tour dates and
maybe even get in touch with you and recommend them
things to do while you're in those places like christ Church, Wellington,
Auckland or heading west of Hamilton out to Ragland. What's
the best place to find out information about you guys
and get in touch.

the rest of the year. I'm sure you're building up
to a climax of being in New Zealand for the
first time, but other plans after you've been here.

Yeah, So when we return home from New Zealand, we're
going to embark on our Aussie tour, which is going
to be really good. We're hitting some spots that we
have never hit before, so that's going to be excellent.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
It's a massive country. Where are you going to go?
Where are those places.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
In all the capital cities, but the places we're hitting
a couple of regional spots as well up North Queensland
