Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio holdar Keys Off the Record podcast with Greg.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Castaway killed to Austin Kilder. Greg,
how's christ Church going.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
It's been lovely in christ Church today, a beautiful sunny
day starting to come into their spring weather.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Yeah, you guys had like minus four? Was it this
morning or yesterday?

Speaker 3 (00:22):
It's been some cold mornings. I think it was this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
And you guys in the band Castaway, are you all
flatting together?

Speaker 3 (00:29):
Yes, we're all in the same flat together.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Do you take turns chopping firewood?

Speaker 3 (00:35):
There's no fireplace in the flat. We're on the heat pump.
But we all take turns doing the chores and cooking dinner.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
And what have you been on tonight?

Speaker 3 (00:43):
Tonight we've had a lasagna.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
And was that your doing?

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Yes?

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Got a secret recipe for the lasagna? What makes yours pop?

Speaker 3 (00:52):
The secrets, The love and care you've got to put
in the sauce. It takes time, the love and care.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Okay, so you're handmaking the sauce of you personally squeezing
and squashing the tomatoes.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
I'm not quite that much of a chef. Packinslave does
a bit of the work for me.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Sure, Yeah, a nice one, and so lasagne. That's a
good go to flat meal.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
We've got our classic staple, which is ty Archy checking
on rice with some cole slaw. That's a crowd favorite
at the Castaway Flat.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
It's a good staple to have. I was expecting like
a spag bowl or a Narcho's or something.

Speaker 3 (01:24):
Narcho's is probably a close second.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, there we go. Congratulations on how things are going
for you guys. You've released a number of great songs,
and we've got a new one out now called It's
Not Your Fault.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
I was quite heavily involved in this song. I came
up with some chords and ref about two years ago
on the piano, and brought to Joe, one of our singers,
and he'd had a larrich and melody that had been
working on and we sort of toyed around and put
the two together and realized that they sounded really good.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
How many singers do you have in the band.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
We've got two lead singers and then other three of
us will do a little bit here and there.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Nice so you've got a nice, full sound when you
perform live or even in the recordings.

Speaker 3 (02:06):
We do it's not quite Beach Boys, but we're getting there.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
And when you record these vocal takes, do you layer them?
Are there more than five voices going on at once?

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Sometimes sometimes there will be more than five, But we
don't do too much in the way of vocal production.
We keep it pretty authentic to a rock band kind
of sound.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
So you came up with a piano lick, the rest
of the song kind of came together. What else is
going on in terms of the vibe. In terms of
the theme of the song.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
We took quite a bit of influence from the two
thousands indie rock sound, translated that piano part onto the
guitars and brought in a bit of a stronger, heavy
drum beat. But we also wanted to look at some
of those more modern pop sensibilities that you might hear
nowadays on the radio, and that's what drew us to
the sonic palette. I guess that we've landed on, but

(02:55):
it's not your fault.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Yeah, right, And there's quite a bit of guitar and
going on. Who's doing the solos on this one.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
Reese's is on the lead guitar for the song, and is.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
He is he constantly moodling on the guitar. Is it
his thing? He's just sitting around just playing guitar solos?

Speaker 3 (03:08):
All leader, Yeah, pretty much. Weever we would like it
that to be the case or not?

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yeah, classic Lely guitarist. All right, well let's check it out,
shall we.

Speaker 3 (03:17):
I am Austin from Castaway and you're listening to It's
Not Your Fault on radio Hurdarchy. There was a time
before this, and.

Speaker 2 (03:26):
There will be a time.

Speaker 4 (03:31):
I never wanted to change scream all that's okay, have
it your own way way, never made your stay.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
You want to get away.

Speaker 4 (03:46):
Ever time when you needed novel, we follow.

Speaker 5 (03:52):
You a kid.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Let me see give me something.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
You had a in the f.

Speaker 4 (04:33):
To the lone between two and last.

Speaker 5 (04:39):
This is all back and why you certainly wouldn't be
that would have told the serious day strike another way
of shot following. Let you give me something.

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Missing, give me something everything.

Speaker 2 (05:24):

Speaker 5 (05:32):

Speaker 2 (06:41):
It's radio heardach that is brand new from Castaway called
It's Not Your Fault And we're lucky enough to have
Austin from the band on a zoom with us now, Curdo, Austin,
thanks for bringing us at tune.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
A Greg, thank you for having me.

Speaker 2 (06:52):
Well done on the composition of it. You mentioned that
you came up with the original riff of the song
on a piano. Does that mean the song could be
performed acoustically if you wanted.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
I think Billy Joel Rendition wouldn't be out of line.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
Sing as a song your piano, man. Yeah, it's obviously
a lot of guitars, a lot of drums, a lot
of full rock sound going on. How much fun is
that song to play live?

Speaker 3 (07:14):
It's a lot of fun. It's quite quicker than most
of our other tracks, so you certainly feel the energy
rise in the room when we pick up that tempo.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
And when was the last time you played it?

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Just last weekend? We had a private function we were playing
at and yeah, it's not your fault.

Speaker 2 (07:28):
Got to feature if you're doing a private function, do
you do like a longer set?

Speaker 3 (07:33):
We played for three hours. There's a long set.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Did you chuck in a few covers in there?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yeah, there's a lot of covers in there.

Speaker 2 (07:40):
Three hours. Because you guys don't have an album yet,
am I right?

Speaker 3 (07:44):
No? No, we don't have an album yet. We've got
one EP out and another one that's on the way,
but no album at this stage.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Just going back to that private gig you did on
the weekend. What sort of covers do you guys do?

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Like the Killers, but we also like to have a
bit of a dance with some boogie Wonderland, Earth Wind
and Fire.

Speaker 2 (08:03):
Yeah, and I'm thinking of what's the other classic cover
song that everyone does?

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Wagon Wheels quite popular.

Speaker 2 (08:09):
Yeah, that's the one I was thinking of.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
That one has been it's been eighty six from our repertoire.
Really you don't do it, and no, no, we don't
play it anywhere at the covers gigs.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
The people will be asking for it, wouldn't they.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
I know they big and plead, But we have to
draw the line on the sands somewhere and that's where
the line is. Wagon wheel.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Well, you're a bold man, Austin. Thanks Greg, So you
had the private gig last weekend. Any more gigs on
the horizon, privately or publicly.

Speaker 3 (08:41):
