Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio holdarchis Off the Record podcast.

Speaker 2 (00:06):
With Let's have a chat with Daily j cure to Rick.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Hey, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yeah? Really well, thanks mate. We'reabouts in the country are
you this evening?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
I'm in sunny old Auckland today quite so.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Daily Jay grew up in Blenham that the brothers and
then moved to Auckland. You joined the band soon after.
Where are you from? Are you an Auckland fella?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Yeah, I'm just from Auckland, Just Auckland.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
Some people like to know, like which part of Auckland.
It's a big city obviously. Is there a specific suburb
that you sort of identify with?

Speaker 3 (00:39):
Grayland, PONTSVI And Yeah. We're all kind of based around
these ways now, so it's pretty handy being central.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah. And what do you guys get up to during
the daytime when you're not rocking and rolling as Daily Jay?
Do you have day jobs?

Speaker 3 (00:53):
We kind of try, but to be honest, we're pretty
busy these days. So yeah, it's mainly mainly Daily Jay
most of the time now, which is pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, that's awesome.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
I spoke with the band in christ Each the other day.
They all flat together. Do you guys spend a lot
of time together.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
Yeah, the boys actually used to a flat together. I
didn't live with them.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Are you talking about when they when they lived together,
when they were living with their mum and dad growing up.

Speaker 3 (01:18):
He's brothers, obviously they've lived together a long time. Yeah,
but flatting wise, I mean in Auckland. Yeah, they kind
of all found a flat together. But yeah, since they've
have moved on to their own sort of abodes, it
can get you know, working and breathing. But they're all brothers,
so they used to growing up sort of things.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Is there a different vibe sometimes that they have, like
in jokes about all brotherly stuff that you don't sort
of know.

Speaker 3 (01:47):
No, they were pretty good. I think I'm the jokes
of the bunch making bad jokes mainly.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Yeah. Nice, we like those. Feel free to check them
in whenever you feel like. Oh yeah, so it's not
just Auckland obviously. You guys travel from time to time.
Have you been anywhere this year?

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yeah? So we've just done our first ever UK tour
which was pretty cool London. Br was still in Manchester
and then one festival in London.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
How'd they go?

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Yeah? They went really well. I mean The crowds were
awesome at our own shows, I think, you know, they
just every show got better and better really along the way.
London was the finale and that was just unreal. The crowd,
it was just such a big response for us. So yeah,
but it's been a long time coming. I think we've
wanted to do this for so long. Finally got to
do it, and yeah it was awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
UK's obviously a big place. Had you been there before.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, I had been actually, but it was actually a
couple of the boys first time, Johnny and Jaden had
never been to Europe at all. Yeah, pretty exciting stuff
for them, like first time touching foot down in Europe
at all.

Speaker 2 (02:55):
So were you a bit of a tour guide.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
A little bit, I guess. I mean I didn't know
heaps myself, but yeah, it's it's a big, big place,
so a lot to get your head around going there.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
We show them with it, how to use the tube
and you know that's the.

Speaker 3 (03:15):
River just like Aukland.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Really yeah through when they move there, I guess you
would have fell as this is our city.

Speaker 3 (03:26):
No, it's it's a big step up. Yeah, ten ten
million or so people walking around. It's pretty chaotic.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
It's something to get used to, but certainly for a
short time. You're back in New Zealand now and at
some point, probably before you left, you Fellas came up
with the song Sunday Stitches.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
It's basically, yeah, about the constant weekly cycle of being
a bit of a rut from you know, getting to
the end of the week and having a bit of
a blowout and getting through the Saturday and Sunday and
then you know, Sunday Stitches is kind of your hangover
basically and pushing through to the week and doing it
all over again.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Really well, I like that idea actually, because you know,
if you eat too much, if you go swimming too soon,
you do get the stitch and then it kind of
is like awkward on the body, and the same way
that if you get a little too steamed and you
have a hangover the next morning, you know, your body's
sort of reacting to something you shouldn't have done.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
Yeah, I think everyone can relate pretty well to it.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
So there was the inspiration. What's the vibe.

Speaker 3 (04:21):
Punchy drums and guitars and hopefully it's a good energy vibe.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
All right, let's check it out.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
So I'm Rick here from Daily Jy and this is
our new song Sunday Stitches here on Hierarchy.

Speaker 2 (04:53):
It's radio a heard. Ok, that's brand new from Daily Jay.
It's called Sunday Stitches and we're lucky enough to have
Rick from the band on a zoom with us. Now
cure it, Direck, thanks for bringing us at you.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
I hope you enjoyed it.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
It's a bit a handclapping going on. There's a bit
of whistling in there too, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
I mean we're all kind of a little bit of
whistlers whistled away.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
So is that the beginning of a new collection of songs?

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Yep. That's our second single essentially from our upcoming album,
which is well along the Way.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Where are you making this new album?

Speaker 3 (05:23):
We're making in Auckland where we're based. Yeah. We've got
Joe Ferris producing it. He's doing an awesome job.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
So do you guys have your own recording space?

Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah, we do have a little studio at the moment.
It's a bit of a makeshift off of space that
we've sort of rehearse and work on the songs and
then we kind of take it through to the next step,
which is basically recording it live and getting producer to
do all the the next parts, you know, so the
pretty big process really how we come about.

Speaker 2 (05:54):
So the album is underway. I'm guessing it'll come out
next year.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
No, it's all on track for this yeah, yeah, yeah,
it's all we're pushing pretty hard on it right now
to get it done by We're really hoping for mid
November release just before summer.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
You know.

Speaker 2 (06:09):
Yeah. And then are you gonna play some of them
songs live in New Zealand before Christmas?

Speaker 3 (06:15):
Yeah? We will be heading a couple of festivals in October.
We're going to the Tea Party in christ Church and
the Long Line and Grisbone so yeah, those are back
to back and then a few others in Auckland. And
we haven't been been touring much here lately, yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Spent too much time in the UK. I suppose I
have any in London and Manchester.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
Bristol, Yeah, yeah, that's right. Yeah, step back to our root.
It's a bit more. It's time and it's a few
shows here.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Well if we want to keep an eye on them
tour dates or just go back and listen to that
song before Sunday Stitches where's the best place to find
some information on you.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
