Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hdarchis Off the Record podcast with Greg.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Trev Let's have a chat with Imperial April.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
God agree, okay you Dan?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yeah? Really well. Thanks. You are in the Garden City
and christ Church and I've been noticing the temperatures down
there have been pretty cold this last few mornings. Been
a good day today.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Yeah, the mornings have been really cold down here, but
it's kind of that classic christ Church thing where it
starts off bitterly, freezingly cold and then the sun comes
out and it's actually quite nice during the days. So
it's been one of those days today and it's been fantastic.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
It's great to have you back on the show again.
You've just released a brand new song today. But just
a bit of a recap what's been going on for
Imperial April.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
We release our album at the end of last year.
I think I even jumped on Radio Hadarky at that
time and had a chat with you about that. Thanks
very much. Since we've released that, we've just kind of
been taking a bit of time out. Matt, the guitarists
in our band, has some really exciting stuff going on
in his life, so he's taken a break from working
with us. So we've picked up a new guitarist who
a longtime friend, Matt Bush. Andy and I actually used
(01:05):
to play in a band with him a long long
time ago, so it's been really awesome to play music
with him again.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
So Matt left the band, but then Matt joined the band.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
Yeah, yeah, so's it's very We thought we'd keep it
nice and unconfusing for everybody and just switch them out.
And actually, quite finally they're both from Rangiora and North Canterbury,
which is quite a small town down here. So yeah,
it's quite amazing that we've managed to find two great
matts who both play guitar and just absolute top guys,
(01:37):
and they both wanted to be in our band. So
it's wonderful. So we said goodbye to Matt Pempvan unfortunately,
but Matt Bush has joined us and we're just loving it.
It's going really well.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Matt Pimpavan, has he you said, he's gone on to
something that something exciting has happened in his life. He's
not one of the bakers at the Rangyura Bakery who've
just won these bakers Supreme.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
But that is such a good story and yeah, congratulations
to that bakery.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, well, I was lucky enough to try one of
those piles today. They ship some up or they actually
brought some up. The guy came in and wow, it's
such a good pie. I'd totally recommend to anyone in
the vicinity of Rung the Order to pop in and
try one out.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Oh man, I might have to get out there.
Speaker 2 (02:17):
There you go. Is tomorrow's road trip sorted? So which
Matt is on the new song Try to Have Fun?
Is that the old Matt or the new Matt?
Speaker 3 (02:25):
This is the new Matt. Yeah, just really excited to
be releasing this song today, marking the start of the
next chapter for us with our new lineup. It's a
bit of a different sound for us, but definitely has
all their elements of Imperial April that people who know
us recognize, and we're super amped to be releasing some
more music again.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Now what, your voice is the one constant in the band?
Is it fair to say?
Speaker 3 (02:49):
Ah? Yeah, I mean, definitely my voice is the constant
in the band. But we you know, we're a guitar band.
We've got a little bit of Cynthia elements from time
to time, but we're a four piece rock band. Yeah, definitely.
My voice is front and center, which is still something
that I'm getting used to, but I really enjoying.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, well you're very humble. Now. The new Kings of
Leon album that came out this year was cool. Can
We please have Fun? Did that inspire you to come
up with try to have Fun?
Speaker 3 (03:17):
Actually? No, but great band. No, So this song is
you know, life always has its ups and downs for everybody,
and you know sometimes when you're in those downs, well,
meeting people around you, you know, just try to distract
you from that and here to try and have fun.
You know, sometimes that's not exactly what you need at
that time. Sometimes you just need to play some really
(03:37):
loud music, right.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
You just want to rock out?
Speaker 4 (03:39):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (03:41):
And so is there any guitar solos? Is there any
loudness to the song? What is going on? And when
can we expect that within the tune?
Speaker 3 (03:48):
There's definitely guitar solos and he it's a pretty good
run at guitar soloing in this tune. The latter part
of the song, right.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Well, that'll be in a couple of minutes from now. Well,
with that any further ado, sure we hear the song.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Cure I'm Victoria. I'm from the band Imperial April and
you're listening to our new song try to have Fun
on radio coding.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Thesa just trying to have fun.
Speaker 5 (04:12):
There's a so much child you see, easy sad and
easy terms what you said, but I do disagree.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
Easy it's got into.
Speaker 6 (04:30):
A much things. Jessy agree.
Speaker 5 (04:56):
Oh the signs by long Way the Devil, I see
nothing left cut of the us Bush. I'm swallowed up.
Speaker 4 (05:09):
But so he's gotten too.
Speaker 7 (05:18):
Much chins J's Jessy, it's somebody loves studying.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
O money astray. He's a Joss drama fu. Gus is
(06:23):
so much child to see. Let's pass into a much.
Speaker 6 (06:36):
Jsten's joy.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
It's ready.
Speaker 7 (06:52):
I heard.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
I think that is brain new from Imperial April called
try to have Fun, and we're lucky enough to the
singer of that song, Victoria on a zoom with this
CUTO Victoria, thank you for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
It's out today. So where can we find it?
Speaker 3 (07:06):
All the usual places, your Spotify's, your YouTube, SoundCloud, band camp,
Apple Music, all the places.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Thanks to you.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Radio Heardarchy, Oh yeah, that's right. You can hear it
on radio Hardache as well, like just thirty seconds ago
and you went wrong about Andy letting rip on the
guitar solo.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
That was awesome. Yeah, good fun.
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Will you change the song up live when you play
it next weekend at the christ Church Town Hall is
part of the Go Live Festival.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
It'll be reasonably true to the recording, but will be
definitely playing that song. Really excited to be playing it
live for the first time. Yeah. The go Live Festival
and Crash each is always such a good time, so
really looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
I've been to it before. It's a good time mate,
because you've got all these little rooms. It's not like
you said, it's a christ Church town Hall, but there's
lots of different rooms and halls and things. It's like
four or five different stages around the building itself, so
you can go and catch all sorts of different genres
and things. It's got a good festival vibe. Just take
a warm coke because it gets a bit cold in
the evening, but find somewhere to leave that because once
you jump around for a bit you soon forget all
(08:02):
about that.
Speaker 7 (08:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Absolutely, it's such a great vibe and just such a
good celebration of everything. That's good about the music industry
down here and Krash Church, all the bands and then
all the great sound companies and lighting crews and all
that kind of stuff. So it's just such a good time.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah, really good vibe, really good community, like you say,
some really good people knocking about there, and some bands
from out of town as well. I know the guys
from Midway Breaks are really looking forward to coming down.
We caught up with Love's Likely Children a couple of
weeks ago. They are really looking forward to it. Locally.
Who shall we look out for if we were going
to pop along to go live next weekend? As someone
who's in the christ Church music scene, are there some
(08:39):
other bands we should check out?
Speaker 3 (08:41):
Definitely? I'm also really looking forward to seeing Transistors. We
play a few sort of similar shows as them and
they're good mates of ours. But as you said, Midway
Breaks and Love's Likely Children are actually playing on the
same stage as us, so yeah, we're really really excited
about the lineup of the stage that we're on this year.
Speaker 2 (08:58):
So you'll be sharing the same green rooms them backstage.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Yeah, maybe do you have a.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Rider when you've got a festival like that going on?
You can you request things to have at your disposal.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Yeah, yeah, definitely. Yeah, And it's quite cool being in
the town Hall because there's all these sort of small
rooms because it's such a large venue, so kind of
get a little space to yourself to go and freak
out quietly before you play, and then yeah, I get
to go and enjoy all the other bands. So yeah,
it's always a great time.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
Yeah, I've been preveyted some of those backward corradlors. It's
like being in a castle with all these secret rooms
in corralors, like you open up a bookcase and oh,
here's another little place. Where does this go?
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
I definitely had one of those sort of spinal tap
moments a few years ago at one of the events
where you go down the corridor and you absolutely cannot
find the stage. So but they've got a really helpful
team to sort of make sure that everyun gets to
the stages on time and keeps the event running.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
It's good tickets from thirty five dollars. There's details on
our gigs Hodaki dot co dot z about go live
next weekend Victoria from Imperial April. If we want to
find out more about you guys, what time you're on,
For instance, we'll just check out that song we just
played before. What's it a good place to find you?
Speaker 3 (10:13):
Well, we're on eight o'clock at go Live. But if
you want to check out some more about us, you
can go to our website or we're obviously on Instagram
and Facebook and things as well.
