Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodarkeys Off the Record podcast with Tony Lyle.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Got something special lined up for you today, the Pixies.

Speaker 3 (00:12):
They are playing two shows in Auckland and Wellington later
this year, two shows in each city, by the way,
which means that's for shows total. The first show on
each of those nights they are playing Boston over and
trump LeMond in full, and the second night is a
classic Pixie set And to celebrate, we've got legendary Pixies
guitarist Joey Santiago with us now via the magic of

(00:37):
technology and Joey, mate, thanks for coming over. We were
lucky to have you enough here supporting Pearl Jam not
that long ago. Did you have a good time on
that tour?

Speaker 4 (00:47):
Yeah, we did hopefully. You know, hey, we're coming back.
Hopefully it's not too soon. If it's too soon, we'll
postpone the tour.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
Surely not.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I mean, especially doing something a little bit different with
this tour as well, with the sort of double dates,
playing a couple of albums.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
What sort of inspired that.

Speaker 4 (01:03):
I watched Steal and Dan do a whole album of
Asia and it was it was, it was. It's fun
to watch, so I know, from an audience perspective, it's
like it's a good thing to do, you know, because
we're playing a sequence of the album and also, you know,
celebrating the however many years that we had the.

Speaker 3 (01:26):
Album out, well, I think they were released in nineteen
ninety ninety one. Does that sound about right? Does that
seem like forever to.

Speaker 2 (01:33):
Go for you?

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:35):
It does it does. I mean it's like we're celebrating
the thirty fifth year I believe of the release.

Speaker 2 (01:42):
So yeah, it's beautiful stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
I mean beautiful that it still holds, you know, so
much weight and a lot of fans hearts so sort
of especially the full album.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
I guess you don't get that anymore, do you.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
A lot of people just releasing singles things going straight
to Spotify. Is it nicest to be able to perform
an album as a full body of work. Do you
think that's some value in that?

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Yeah, you know, we did it. We still think an
album format. I'm sure other bands still do it this time,
but at that time it was the only way for
us to think was like that, you know, And there
were some songs that didn't make it on some albums
because it just didn't fit the album's vibe.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
Yeah, that makes total sense. And so when you transition
over to the more classic set nights two at both
the venues, is that no holds bar, just sort of
anything you want to play from across the range, including
off the new album.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Yes, the second one is just off the cuff. There's
no set list, which it's our usual set where we
don't have a set list. We just play whatever. You know,
Charles is feeling and Dave will just start one song
that he thinks it's gonna be a good one, you know, So.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
This is how you do it. You really you have
no seat list.

Speaker 3 (03:02):
You're just vibing out a show because you know most
bands will have a seatless and might hand them out
to the crowd afterwards.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Are you guys just going with the flow and feeling it.

Speaker 4 (03:10):
Yeah, yeah, we do that. We do that. We actually
mess up with a set list casing point on the
even this album that we're doing in sequence, where there
was one time I started the wrong song.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Does everyone go with it or are you're like, hey, hey,
we probably.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Should we should do the album we totally start it
was a train wreck.

Speaker 3 (03:33):
Well we shouldn't stop now, Joey hold the line mate,
we'll come back and have a quick chat with you.
Shortly before that, we're going to play three songs as
chosen by our listeners for twelve o'clock Rock Today from
the Pixies and we're going to kick straight into it.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
It's Gigantic on Radio Hodaki.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Pixies with them rounding out our twelve o'clock Rocks Today,
Where Is My Mind? And Gigantic before that, and we
are playing the Pixies due to the fact that the
Pixies are playing in New Zealand this November Auckland and Wellington,
two shows in both cities, and to celebrate that fact,
Joey Santiago is still on the line with us and
Joey my start is learning to play the guitar.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
He's eight years old. It's all very new to him.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
And imagine there's a whole bunch of people out there
who look up to you as a guitarist. Do you
have any advice to people who are picking up the
guitar and trying to become a great like you?

Speaker 4 (04:26):
Practice, you know, make sure you could physically your you
know your hands are you know physically can do it.
But more importantly, just start learning songs. That you want
to play, you know, start off with some easy ones,
don't frustrate yourself.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
And you're getting down to Wellington as part of this
tour as well. Get to treat some other centers to
some Pixies tunes have Do you know much about Wellington,
the nation's capital?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
It's hilly, yep.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
I like the architecture.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
Hey, well, appreciate it, Joey.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Well, look forward to those shows two in Auckland two
and Wellington on the twenty third and twenty fourth. In
Auckland twenty sixth, twenty seventh and Wellington the first night
playing Boss and Over and Trump LeMond and for in
the second night classic Pixie set. Do people go to
both Is it the sort of thing where someone will
buy tickets and go to both nights They're going to
get a completely different experience.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah, yeah, I've seen them. I've seen them, you know,
especially if they're wearing like a purple hat or something else.
See the purple hat again, So.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
We your purple hats go to both nights. Joey, appreciate
your time, mate, and all the best with the tour.

Speaker 4 (05:36):
All right, okay, Tony, thank you.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
Exciting stuff, and there are still tickets available for that
tour in both Auckland and Wellington for both of the shows. So,
like Joey said, we're a purple hat, go to both
shows and enjoy yourself.
