Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio Hodakis Off the Record podcast with Greg prin.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Lime Cordial Kyoda.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
Ali Kyoda. How's it going?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah? Really well, thanks mate. Now I'm here in New Zealand,
but you I don't believe are at the moment you
guys in Australia. But are you in Australia right now?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
I am in Australia just a brief period back to
release the album. You know, we wanted to be back
home when releasing this album comes out tomorrow. I guess
you guys actually get it first because you get the
start of the day before anyone else in the world.
So en Z gets music first. That's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, we're pretty lucky about that, a couple of hours
before Australia does. It's pretty sweet.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
You could be streaming that and putting it up on
YouTube or something, Yeah, and.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
Just rubbing it into everybody else around the world saying
oh yeah, we've heard that already. It's like two and
a half times listening through the album, which is called
Enough of the Sweet Talk. Get to that surely. But
you mentioned you've just got back to Australia. Where have
you guys been.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Well, we've actually been holidaying for six weeks, Louis and I,
which is something that management didn't really like, you know, like,
what the hell are you releasing an album and you're
going on holiday for six weeks. We've just done so
much touring around the world recently and had a few
friends getting married overseas, and so it was something that
we felt we needed to do in order to be
(01:24):
present and smashing through album release and the tours, coming
up with a lot of positivity. So you know, when
you have a little break like that, you start to
realize that, oh, this is what I love doing and
I'm really keen to get back and playing shows and
all that sort of stuff. So that's been great.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
Yeah, nice and good holidays. Good weddings all went well.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
Yeah, yeah, three mates getting married in Europe just coincidentally,
which was Yeah, it's always pretty arrogant putting on a
wedding in Europe, isn't it, especially if you're Australian. But
now couple of them we're in Australian, one was in Portugal,
and one was in Wales and one was in Scotland,
so yeah, pretty pretty contrasting.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
Had you been to all those places before. You probably
toured them all before.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
We haven't done Portugal, but I love going to Portugal
as a little break, and there's so many mad people
moving to Portugal, like Digital Nomad's doing awesome stuff. You know.
We did, We did do a little bit of work.
Louis and I hired out a studio for a week
or two just to kind of get prepped for the
album and work on a few things. So that was
(02:34):
really cool, man. It's yeah, Lisbon's a great place to
visit if anyone's heading over to Europe soon.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
Any travel tips for us, any recommendations of airbnbs and
Lisbon or restaurants to check out.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
Well, man, we had this one airbnb that was upper
hundred stairs, so the thighs got a little bit of workout,
but it overlooked the whole city. Yeah, it was great.
The food just is so incredible in in Lisbon. It's
I don't know what it is. It's not just the
Portuguese chicken. It's great. It's kind of like everywhere you go,
(03:08):
it's pretty spectacular. You know. We've got good food in
Australia and New Zealand, we've got good produce, but sometimes
it's it's you need that a bit of European chefs
behind it.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Yeah, right, So there was the Portuguese chicken, well other delicacies.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
They do a cod, right, they do like a grilled fish,
and they love their chips, so it's kind of a
fish and chips. But they just split the fish in
half and smack it on the grill, pretty much like
they do with their Portuguese chicken. They just grill the
shit out of it. My mouth is watering right now
just think about it. But they yeah, it just they
just grill the hell out of it and it's it's
(03:46):
it's so tasty. I don't know what they're doing, some
some Perry Perry seasoning that that I don't know about,
but it's yeah, it's pretty great.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah nice. And all those steps you mentioned, people who
live in Wellington will be well accustomed to that. There's
people living all sorts of hillsides. Every time I visit
someone and willing someone up and down twenty or thirty
or fifty or forty steps or whatever. So one hundred
it seems pretty extreme, but good, good fitness.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
It's been almost feels like it's got the same sort
of topography as Wellington. Maybe Dunedin with the steep hills. Yeah,
it's bit up and down man Donedan's Dunedin if I'm right.
It's modeled off street map of Edinburgh, right.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Yeah, it's a very Scottish feel and also it does
have the steepest street in the world.
Speaker 3 (04:29):
Yeah, which is something we've visited a few times. And
so yeah, I mean keen to get back to Dunedin.
I love I love Dunedin so much, definitely love. I
love surfing. So Dunedin's got some great surf. Yeah, fantastic.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Well you'll be back there on October. We can get
to that shortly, but first let's play a tune off
the new album that is out tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
We've released a few songs from this album already. The
Facts of Life was the first one, and it's pretty
much just about young, young, dumb love and naivety when
you are young. We mentioned our hometown and the lyrics
and you know, it's kind of when you first get
your license and your first love and girlfriend for the
first time, and you're exploring your even your hometown streets
(05:13):
and opening up your world and your horizons and it's yeah,
it's a good time. So It's really nostalgic for me
because I just go back to being, you know, seventeen
with these lyrics.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Let's check it out Lime Cordial Facts of Life on
Radio Headachice screaming, it's already a heard ich. That's Lime
(05:59):
Cordial with of Life. It's on their brand new album
Enough of the Sweet Talk, which is out tomorrow. And
we're lucky enough to have Olli from the band on
a zoom with us. Now, Ollie, thanks for bringing us
that tune.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yeah, thanks for having me and whereabouts.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Does that fit on the song list of the album
Enough of the Sweet Talk.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Lucky You've got it in front of me. It's pretty
early on in the song list. And the reason being
is because we've structured this album likely the course of
a relationship sort of from being strangers, moving into friends,
friends to lovers, lovers to enemies, and then enemies back
(06:39):
to strangers again. So the reason behind that is, I
think because we're brothers, Louis and I, and we write
a lot separately and then sometimes we write together, so
we have these mixed experiences we write over the course
of a few years. We don't tend to just jump
into the studio and go, you know, let's write this
(07:01):
album together and really put it together as a concept album.
From the start, we're just kind of writing as different
experiences occur in our life. So we've structured this album
like one single relationship, but each song has a different
experience from two different people. But it definitely feels a
(07:22):
little bit more yeah, I guess relatable being one relationship. Yeah,
so facts of Life, it's early on there, it's naive,
early young love.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah. Nice, And then when you get to the angry
bitter songs, is that conjure up, you know, some emotional
baggage when you have to perform these songs on stage.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
I mean we do, We do get into the angry
bitter part of the album. So that kind of comes,
you know, two thirds of the way through the album
and then ends with a song called Strangers, which yeah,
it does bring up a bit of emotion. And you know,
there's one song on here that is called when I'm
Losing It, and it's like it's the song that Louis
(08:04):
presented to me and just I don't know, you get
a little bit worried when someone presents your song like that.
It's like the main lyric is when I'm losing it,
You'll know nothing about it, and that's kind of him
hiding his anxieties from people, you know. So it's I mean,
it's good that it's come out in songs. And a
(08:24):
lot of the time when we are writing these songs
together and you know, we might write separately and then
bring them together, we end up having to talk about
these lyrics. So it ends up being a bit of
a therapy session of some sort. So, you know, as
Australians and holding back on our emotions a lot of time,
a lot of the time, I guess struggling, especially as
(08:45):
men are struggling to talk about these things. These songwriting
sessions do end up being a bit therapeutic.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
And I'm sure they are for listeners as well, who
start thinking about, well, actually I am going through that
and maybe I should express that to someone at some point.
Do you ever have people coming to you and saying
what this song affected me?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
People say we often get messages saying like this song
helped me through a breakup or something, or you know,
I had a sickness in the family or going through
this hard time and this song really helped me through.
And you know, it doesn't have to be an emotional
slow song, you know, sometimes you really need to pick
me up song, so stoke to be bringing that sort
(09:24):
of energy. And I think this album we do have
a few deep songs that maybe we haven't really explored
on other albums. So I hope I'm not making people
cry anymore than they should be.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
So we need to familiarize, familiarize ourselves with the songs
on Enough of the Sweet Talk, the album that comes
out tomorrow, so that when you come here in October,
we'll be able to sing along while you're on stage
performing them in Duneda and christ Church, Wellington and Auckland.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
Everyone will have done their homework by then. Exactly sure,
well acquainted I heard.
Speaker 2 (10:01):
We'll be taking notes and yeah, just double checking the lyrics,
make sure we get them exactly right and don't start
making up words or getting them wrong.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
Good on Janetin is the start of the tour you
mentioned before you love that place?
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Yeah, well, the first time we ever toured New Zealand.
What year would that have been, It was like twenty
fifteen or twenty sixteen, something like that. You know, we
played a show in Wellington and then we played a
festival in Raglan and then hired a couple of vans
and just looped all of New Zealand just for fun
because we're just kind of our first proper trip over there.
(10:36):
So like we got well acquainted and someone said, oh,
you've got to go to Daneedin. I've got a mate
down there I can introduce you to. And it's the
owner of the surf shop on the beach there, so
we really got got to know him and like he
take every time we go there, we take a surfing
and we've got a day off. Yeah, it's great. He'll
(10:57):
take us out. And it took us a while for
him take us to certain spots. It take us out
out the front of the main beach, and then as
we got to know him, it took us to a
few secret spots. So yeah, we've kind of got like
a bit of a soft spot for Dunedin. And you know,
if you love surfing, like there's some incredible surf around there,
you just got to put on your hoodie and your booties.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
So that's Wednesday, October sixteen. You'll be in the water
by day and then on stage at the town Hall
that night, and then the following night Christchurch Town Hall
that Saturday Michael Fowlis into Wellington and then wrapping it
up the following nights Sunday, October twenty at the Great
Hall the Auckland Town Hall.
Speaker 3 (11:41):
Yeah awesome. I mean these are the biggest, biggest shows
we've done in New Zealand, the biggest headline tour we've done.
So really looking forward to it. There's something something in
the water and Endz with the love of music and
even the music coming out of New Zealand. There's an
enthusiasm in the audience. They're pretty always loud and just
(12:02):
jumping up and down and dancing. It feels like there's
a mad appreciation for music. So yeah, really looking forward
to it.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
I'll bet you with a response like that, that must
be amazing.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
Absolutely. I remember the first show we did we did
over there in Wellington, it was just like, oh man,
what the hell. It really did feel like if you're
coming over here, you're making the effort to get over
the ditch, then like we love you for it. So yeah,
you do get rewarded putting on a show.
Speaker 2 (12:33):
Nice. Well, you've got four of them to look forward to.
The album is out tomorrow from Lime Cordial, called Enough
of the sweet Talk if we want to have a
listen to that. Find details on the tour dates. We're
the bigst place to find information on you guys.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
On the website, you know, that's where that's where everything's happening, really,
ticket sales and the album vinyls. Like Louis does all
the artwork for our tour posters, but all through of
that through our album artwork and single lie. So this
new vinyl that we put together is it's just it's
pretty thick package. It's got like a twenty page lyric
(13:08):
book in it with all artwork by Louis, so it's
it's all pretty special. It's environmentally friendly as well, recycled
plastic in that vinyl.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
Yeah, so that's Limecordial dot com. Sure is Ollie from
Lime Cordial. Thanks your time on HDAKI.
Speaker 3 (13:27):
Yeah, thanks so much the pleasure. Really appreciate it.
