Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodarchis Off the Record podcast with Greg Treble.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with Love's Ugly Children Cured to Floss.
Speaker 3 (00:11):
Hey Greg, how's it going?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yeah, good mate, you are getting the band back together.
Let's cast our minds back to the mid nineties. When
Love's Ugly Children got together.
Speaker 4 (00:21):
It was just a bunch of people in the room
in christ Church, nothing more to do than play music.
So it was just a bunch of friends all getting
together and getting out your angs, getting out everything you
want to say that you just can't say. You can
say it all in music. So yeah, it just got
together and took it from there.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
And what were you angry about at the time.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Ah, you know he's got of young punk rockers at
that fine anti establishment, anti everything.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
The wolves is against you.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
You guys put out a couple of albums, the first
one in nineteen ninety four, Where did You Make That Someone?
Speaker 4 (00:55):
We recorded at Fifth Street, and some songs were recorded
when we went over to London and some recordings over there,
and there's lots of songs like some more poppy songs,
Voodoo Girl, and then ones like Suck and Yea Space
Suits in there somewhere too, so.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
You dominated christ Church and then you took on London.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Yeah, that was there was some fun times going low
and there's such a good era. There's you know all
Shea had around and Daja vooter around and it was
just kind of a really cool time that was up
in Auckland and then going over to London and that
was that was an eye opener. Everything was so different
then seeing all his bands while we were there, which
is really cool. Oasiss and all those kind of bands
were big and they were in the same rehearsal room
(01:37):
as us while we're over there rehearsing.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Did you hang out with the Gallagher brothers at all?
Speaker 3 (01:42):
Oh? Totally. They had something to do with the record
company and we're doing some smoothy.
Speaker 4 (01:46):
Movie meet and greet thing and yeah, he's such a
little smart, smart ass kind of guy. He wanted a
cigarette that I had to light it for him. That
kind of guy class.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
And then you did a gig in London and they
turned you off. Were you to raucous?
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Were the big piers and stuff and the venue was
next door to an old folks time, so they kept
asking us to turn down? Can we turn down? And
eventually they just turned the pa off on us, but
they can't turn the amps off, so we kept playing
and they can't turn the drums off. So we furnished
our stead and we just screamed our way through it
and turned up to eleven. It was fun in a
(02:27):
weird way.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
So how long did you next?
Speaker 3 (02:31):
Old folks?
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Yeah, that's right, what were they thinking? So how long
did you last? In the UK?
Speaker 4 (02:36):
And I think we're on there for about three or
six months and England we're a little bit weird and
wasn't quite sure if we're too heavy for some scenes
and then too poppy for other scenes. That quite often
put us with a really heavy metal band which didn't work,
or a really poppy band which didn't work.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
So the gigs were pretty interesting. We were the odd
odd ones out.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, and this is mid ninety so post grunge sort
of a vibe. And in nineteen ninety four you came
out with Spacesuit.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Yeah, well that's just the three of us, me, Jason
and Simon, and Simon wrote that song. I have no
idea what it's about him leaving the planet and becoming
a space man and his spacesuits on and he's ready to.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
Go so the three of you guitar, bass, drums.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, that's a three piece.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Do you have a favorite part in this song?
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Yeah, totally.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
When it kind of builds up slowly over time, and
then when the double kind of check because Jason's awesome
on the double check, everything just kind of speeds up
and the tension builds up, and yeah, I just love it,
and it kind of kicks.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Into the noise of.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
And then back to a nice little beautiful bit and yeah,
it's a fun.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Song to play.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
You get to do that in christ Church soon. We'll
talk about that in a moment. Flosses with us from
Love's Ugly Children. Let's hear that you now, And that
bit you were just talking about is coming up shortly
in Spacesuit on radiohodachew O Godlas.
Speaker 4 (04:29):
Go Bad came from.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
It's ready a heard. That's Love's Ugly Children with Spacesuit
from an EP they released back in nineteen ninety four
called Coalboarders Surf And we're lucky enough to have Floss
from that band on a zoom with us now, Cure
to Floss, Thanks for bringing us that tune.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Hey never was good to hear that. It's in a while.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
It takes you back to nineteen ninety four. You released
more music over the years, you went to London for
a little while, you toured Australia multiple times. But it
all started in christ Church and you're getting back together
in christ Church soon.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
We are so excited about that. Like twenty seven years
since you know me, Jason say All played in christ Church.
It's so cool to go back there to the town
all and play at the go Live Festival.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
Yeah. And what day is that?
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Saturday, seventeenth of August.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Like six weeks away. Who else is playing at the
go Live Festival this year?
Speaker 4 (05:29):
The bands who will be on the same stage as us,
And there's some couple of local bands, Midway Breaks and
a Left or Right Wondrop Nations. Yeah, there's a lot
of local bands as well.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Great. And I've been to go Live a couple of times,
really well run music festival. It's always a good time.
It's great that you guys are on the lineup. Twenty
seven years. Where have the years gone? Where have you
been since those days? You've been up to I know, I.
Speaker 4 (05:55):
Know we've all been up to music. Jason's busy in Melbourne.
He's been doing down forever. Simon still in christ Church,
and he's been playing music NonStop, and I'm on, why
he kid at the moment and now I've just been
playing music for years too. None of us have ever
diverged from our one true love, which is making.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Noise, and whose idea was to get back together.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Kind of funny, it was just came out of the
blue because we're all kind of you know, moved off,
did our own thing, and Simon messaged me. I was like, yeah,
why not we message shads and He's like, yeah, why not?
And it just seemed to be the right time, in
the right place. We're all still in a good mood,
still loving the music, and yeah, kind of just need
(06:39):
some of that nineties noise back on the airways for
a little while anyway.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
So those songs from back in the nineties, from the
Cold Worder Surf EP, from the Shout and Gold album
from ninety seven, are those the tunes are going to
be playing on the night they are?
Speaker 4 (06:54):
Yeah, We're going to be doing a lot of those songs.
Those are the songs people know, all right.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
So that's in christ You in six weeks for the
Go Live Music Festival. Are there any other shows coming
up around the country.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
Yeah, we had to do one in Auckland because we
just had to do one in Auckland on the following Thursday,
the twenty sixth of August, down at the mother Ship
and there's ninety thirty dollars. A second might be forty
on the door, so probably get your second under the
radar and that'll be It's a nice small venue, the Mothership,
so it'll be the good old school gigs full of
(07:26):
people rocking night looking forward to it.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
So you'll be catching the faerry from Wahiki for that one.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
I sure will be.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
And I guess you can't play too late because you
want to catch the faery back afterwards, or is there
some kind of after party you might stay the night
in the city.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
I might just see where the evening takes me that night.
I think there will be no plan to get that
fairy back, but we will play a little bit earlier
because it's a Thursday night and some friends and locals
from the island will need to get home, so the
show will be a little bit earlier or not to
stup it late.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Yeah, with people being in Melbourne and christ and you're
being on WHITEHACKI Island. Have you had a chance to
rehearse or is this something that's going to happen closer
to the time.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
No, No, we definitely did a rehearsal. Jason flew over
from Melbourne and I flew down to christ Church and
we cooked up with the mate down there and used
his bandroom just to check we could all do it,
and majorly it just everything just fell back and di place.
The song just felt natural.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Your fingers just went to.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Where they were supposed to and yeah, it was so easy.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
We're like, oh frick, this is going to work. Good time.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
So christ Church and Eakland in August. Where can we
get the details on you guys to check out these
shows and the music, I mean the song Space that
we just played before as well.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
Well, because we haven't been around so long, we don't
really have a big Love Ugly Children's website, but you
can go to Fossbury or under the Raidar type and
loves that Gas Children and I'm sure something will come up.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Yeah, and on that christ Church one too. We've got
details on our gigs page at Hodaki dot co dot.
