Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodarchis Off the Record podcast with Greg Treven.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with SJD.

Speaker 3 (00:10):
Hey Greg, how are you?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Yeah? Really well things? Last time we caught up, you
were in Dunedin. Are you still there this evening?

Speaker 3 (00:16):
No, I'm not. I'm back in the Land of Ork
right now. So now Auckland as my home again.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Right because you were there in Dunedin for quite a while,
you had some sort of residency going on, Eh I did.
I did.

Speaker 3 (00:29):
I was a Mozart fellow at Otago School of Music
and I'm not anymore. Somebody else has taken over that role,
if they call it a role. But no, I'm back
here and just tutting around trying to make music, working
with a few younger artists.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
And yeah, when you say you're working with some younger artists,
so you're working in a mentoring role or producing role.
Are you doing backup vocals or drums or what are
you doing?

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I suppose it's a mentoring aspect to it anything. You know,
when you're producing, you're sort of doing a bit of
mentoring as well. Artists called Vinn Johansson who's performing last night?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Actually, and did you go along to the Finnjerhansen gig.

Speaker 3 (01:08):
It was the Exploding Rainbow Orchestra to sort of collective
of musicians, the real luminaries there who any bell Julia
Dean's were playing. Don McGlashan just playing in the orchestra actually,
and they had a fantastic group of musicians. They'd take
one of the one of the original songs and arrange
them orchestra them. It was actually mind blowingly good, So

(01:30):
I'd hardly recommend if anybody gets the opportunity to see them.
It's brilliant.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
And what songs did Don McGlashan and Julia Dean's rearrange.

Speaker 3 (01:38):
Well, Julia did one of her original songs. I think
it's it's one. I didn't know the name of it.
I think it's someone her album to come. And Don
wasn't even there as a performer. He was just in
the orchestra playing the euphonium, just like a jobbing musician,
probably getting paid nothing, I'm guessing, but yeah, I say
it was a sort of very you know, there was

(01:59):
the function of of equalizing all musicians in that setting,
so all.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Right, so there was no hierarchy, There was no like, oh,
this guy's a big shot, so he should be up
the front now.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
No, No, the only hierarchy was, you know, once you're
up there, your chance to sort of grab the limelight
for three minutes and really make it, which quite a
few artists did.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
And did you consider jumping on stage and taking part?

Speaker 3 (02:19):
Well, I don't think it would have been regarded as
being the thing to do in that setting, as people
had gone to a lot of work to individual members
of the explaining Rainbow Rainbow Orchestra had sort of arranged
and orchestrated the songs, so they'd been living with them
for quite a while. I think it was just best
as I stood back as an audience member, just appreciating

(02:40):
it and sending loving vibes.

Speaker 2 (02:42):
Yeah. Nice, Well we should all do that, and in fact,
we're encouraging people to go and see live music this
month with their competition Gig a Little. Can you recall
some of your favorite gigs of all time?

Speaker 3 (02:54):
One of the best gigs I've ever went to was
it was revolutionized kind of the idea of music for
me was seeing bol To Space at the Glue Pot
when it was still around. That was an absolutely unbelievable gig.
They just had all the walls and the windows rattling
in tune with their with the juggernaut of sound they
were making from the stage. That was a really, really

(03:14):
great one.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
And did that bailed to space gig inspire you to
take things to the next level.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
It inspired me to make an unholy racket more than anything.
I remember. The thing that inspired me to take things
to the next level was making some music and finishing
it and then other people said, we'll play that on
the radio. So that was great.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And a few years ago you sent us a song
and we played that on the radio. It was called
I Want to Be Foolish.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
It was one of those things that was written in
about fifteen minutes.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
Well let's check it out.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
Hey, Hi, this is SJD. You're listening to I Want
to be Foolish on radio Hoodiki.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
It's ready a heard ache. He that's SJD and I
want to be Foolish. We're lucky enough to have SJD
on a zoom with us now, Culder Sean, thanks for
bringing us that tune.

Speaker 3 (04:14):
Hey, hey, yeah, all my pleasure.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
You'll be playing that one live, perhaps at the Other's
Way Music festival in Auckland in a few weeks.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
That's pretty much a guaranteed one that we play. It's
a bit of a crowd fave, so yeah, definitely.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah. What other songs do you think you'll check in?

Speaker 3 (04:30):
Well, it's always. Since we play so infrequently, it does
tend to be a little bit of a best of
every time we do it. There's certain songs that people
will not countingance us not playing. Excuse the double negative there.
We'll usually play Beautiful Haze, Waterhole, which is off the
last album Sweetheart. Just a few oldies and hopefully some
newbies as well.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, okay, so you've been working on material this year?

Speaker 3 (04:54):
Yeah, I'm always working on material.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
The Other's Way Festival it's around k Road, around all
sorts of venues. Have you been to one of these previously?

Speaker 3 (05:04):
I've been to several of them. Yeah. Yeah, it's always
it's always a great night. Because I'm a little older now,
it's spread over like multiple venues, I have a tendency
to probably just stay in one place. I won't necessarily
go and see all the bands I'm wanting to see
or expecting to see. I just sort of stay in
one place and see whoever comes on. And I kind

(05:25):
of like it that way, then you don't have that
kind of psychic adjustment that you have to make, you know,
on a pervenue basis. But for anyone else, I think
there's a fantastic lineup of I mean predominantly local artists,
but great local artists playing.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
So yeah, if you were to move around, who do
you think you would like to see?

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Neve Strang who I've been working with. She's playing up
there with a new band. I think she'll probably be
playing a little later on in the evening. Yeah, I
think she's really fantastic. I would encourage anybody who's there,
probably in the in the mid too late evening, to
go and see her playing.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
Yeah, I mean when you go to usual a common
music festivals often tense around an outdoor venue and that's
where you go see the bands. But in this case,
it's in Kay Road in Auckland, and there's already venues there,
so each venue becomes a different tent if you like,
and has their own lineup of bands on the night,
and so you've got I don't know, it looks like
a couple of dozen bands performing that night, and you're

(06:23):
just a roam around the venues. You just have a
wristband and you can come and go as you please.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Yeah. I think it's a great idea, and I think
that local music and local music promotion really needs everybody's
support at the moment. I think, get along. It's not
a night you're ever going to regret going to just
fantastic music everywhere, and you'll hear some things you've never
heard before and be glad that you did.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
I see Lady Hawk's playing her debut album right through.
Have you seen her play before?

Speaker 3 (06:52):
I've seen her play before, and she's fantastic. Yeah, and
she always had a fantastic band, so yeah, great, super memorable,
and she writes those kind of songs, so yeah, fantastic.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Yeah great. I went to it last year. I hads
such a good time.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Oh fantastic. There we go where you know all about it?

Speaker 2 (07:08):
The other's way is what we're talking about. This music
festival around k Road. S JD. You're going to be there.

and just go back to some of your music. Where's
