Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome to Radio hodar kis Off the Record podcast.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Let's have a chat with the boondocks. Cured U Scotty.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
How do how's a game?
Speaker 4 (00:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Really well? Thanks? How has twenty twenty four been for
you guys? We're halfway through it now.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Yeah, it's been pretty good. A We've had quite a
lot of ups. We did the Sound Splash festival it
started the year to kick things off and released that
WEP and now we're releasing another song called Sticks and Stones.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Sticks and Stones, this's just cast our minds back after
a horrific day of freezing cold weather all over the
country and horrendous fog and auckland that disrupted aeroplanes and
all sorts of things. But back in summertime when there
was Sound Splash and music festivals going on, Raglan is
a beautiful place to be in the summertime. How was
that experience for you guys?
Speaker 3 (00:49):
It was really cool, It was It was It was
super fun, super high quality gear that we got to use.
It was really hot when it's already about thirty degrees
outside and then you got bunch of lights pointed at
you as well. That can get pretty heated, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yeah, And The thing about Soundsplace is it's right by
the ocean. The surf club is just down the hill.
Did you jump in for a bit of a swim
afterwards since you were steaming hot?
Speaker 3 (01:15):
I wish No, we did it. We kind of hung
around the festival a little bit and caught some other acts,
so it was pretty good. But no swimming at Raglan Beach. No.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Are there any plans to do anything this summer?
Speaker 3 (01:25):
Yeah? Man, So this single is the first single off
an album that we're working on at the moment, and
we do plan on doing a tour when we release that.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
So okay, well we'll get to that surely. But first,
this new song it's not even out yet, are you saying, Scott,
Are you're giving us an exclusive first play on the
new song from the Boondocks?
Speaker 3 (01:45):
Sure? And that's how it is. You know, I'm gonna
I'm gonna let Hodaki play it for the first time
on the air waves.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
What an honor. It's called Sticks and Stones.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
Yeah, it kind of just start off as a jam
and we wrote it really quick, actually came really naturally.
The song is just about being a bit of a cynic,
which I am big time. I'm very cynical, so I
kind of write it about being cynical. We recorded it
maybe three months after writing it. Honestly, it hasn't been
a song in our catalog for a very long time.
(02:15):
Super riffy, super high energy. We're really stoked with it.
It's one of my personal favorites. So I'm really looking
forward to it coming out on Friday, so the whole
world can hear it on the streaming platforms and everywhere.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Yeah, but in the meantime you can hear it right now.
Shall we press play?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Yes, let's first play on sticks and stones on radio?
Speaker 4 (02:36):

Speaker 2 (05:20):
Sorry, it's radio heardarchy and that is brain new from
the Boondocks. It's called Sticks and Stones. You can let
(05:43):
us know what you thought of that on the text
three four eight three. We're lucky enough to have Scottie
with the band on a zoom with us now killed
a Scotty. Thanks for giving us the exclusive first play
in the world on that song.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
You're very much welcome. I hope everyone enjoyed it.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Yeah, absolutely, Well, it's a stonking song and you mentioned
it came to you quite quickly. Is it kind of
easy writing songs when there's only two of you in
the band, as opposed to other bands like Fat Fred's
Drop Mistake them ages, when there's like twenty people involved.
Speaker 3 (06:10):
Yeah, but Fat Fruity Strump's probably made up of very
capable musicians. No, it takes a little while sometimes to
get the ball rolling because you're trying to come up
with new ideas all the time. And not try to
sound the same With this song, we took a I'd
like to think we took a bit of an approach
like a Nirvana song. Maybe the song just does what
we do best, so it came pretty naturally.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
Yeah, nice, I can hear that influence for sure. And
so once it's released this Friday to the rest of
the world, will you have a chance to showcase it
in person?
Speaker 3 (06:43):
Yeah, we're doing a show on August second at Big Fan. Actually,
we're doing a show with Pink Plates and Blackwater Ruined.
That's going to be at Morningside. And yeah, we've got
a few shows coming up in the year that we
haven't announced yet. We're going to do a hometown gig
at the Kentish in September. So yeah, we got We've
got a few few good shows coming up.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Okay, so Auckland on August two, and then the kN
test to just say, you guys, your band name is
the Boondocks because it describes where you're from. But for
anyone who doesn't know the exact location of the Kentestion
the Boondocks, so to speak, where are you, guys?
Speaker 3 (07:17):
We're We're from a little town called Wayuku. We're actually
from the Future Peninsula, so we're rural as how, so
we we decide every now and again that we want
to do a local show because Wayouki shows up big
time for those shows. That one's going to be in
September and we're really looking forward to it. The last
time we did it, it was packed out. I reckon.
(07:37):
We're going to pack it out even more this time,
so it should be a good one.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
That's great because, yeah, you sort of think of rural
and then maybe there's not that many people there. You
have to go to the big city to get a
big full crowd, but you guys can manage that. People
come out of the hills, off the farms and into
Wayuku for a boondocks experience.
Speaker 3 (07:55):
Yeah, that's the one. We got some other local bands
coming on as well, which we're really excited for off
and No Strangers, So it's going to be a real
good time.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I reckon when you say local bands, you mean Wyuku
a fee two peninsular bands or from further Afield.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
South of South Aukland is a good way to put it. Yeah,
so sort of glenn Brook area and Dreary.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yeah right, Well, I'm glad there's such a thriving music
scene in these parts.
Speaker 3 (08:19):
Yeah, absolutely, absolutely, there's nothing else to do really.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
Play rock and roll. Good on you man. This is
Scotty from the Boondocks with us. And you mentioned previously
that this song that we just played before, Sticks and
Stones as part of a broader project. There may be
even be an album released later this year. Yep.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
So we're recording with Scott Seabright at the moment. We've
got another recording session in August. We recorded a number
of songs already, and yeah, we're going to be releasing
some tracks over the next little while and then eventually,
I reckon we're going to have an album out and
about in the world and that will be I'm really
looking forward to releasing that one.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah. Scott Seabright is a legendary producer. Are you working
with him? Is he coming to you to the Boon Docks?
Are you working at his studio somewhere?
Speaker 3 (09:04):
Yeah, we're working. We're working at his studio and Pocono actually,
so it's pretty close for us. He's a great producer,
he's a great mate, so it's yeah, he's awesome to
work with.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, and Pocono famous for its ice creams and it's bacon.
Is that still the case?
Speaker 3 (09:18):
Yes, yes, it is still the case. Famous for both
of those, so yeah, but soon it's going to be
famous for the for the Boondocks. The producer that worked
on the on the Boon Dogs are going to put
Pocono on the map.
Speaker 2 (09:32):
And can you tell us at this stage what the
name of the album is going to be.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
We've got a few ideas, but no, I can't. I
can't quite release that yet. We gotta, we gotta make
sure we have one hundred percent before I go saying
anything about the name.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
So in the meantime, we've got this gig on August two,
and then another one in September in Wayuku. If we
want to follow you guys and keep an eye when
the song comes out this Friday. Where's the best place
to find some information on.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
