Speaker 2 (00:10):
Right now, let's take you to the US and what
has been an extraordinary, shocking day in American politics. Former
President Donald Trump has been injured and what seems to
be an assassination attempt. It is Pennsylvania campaign rally this morning.
Details are still being released, but what we do know
is too are dead, including the gunman. The former president
is reportedly injured but doing well. Our US correspondent Mitch

(00:33):
McCann joins us.

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Mitch, Hello, Tyler, good evening to you from New York,
where this has been an historic, as you say, shocking,
an extraordinary afternoon in the United States. Donald Trump a
subject to what appears to be a likely assassination attempt
at a rally in Pennsylvania this evening. If you haven't
seen the footage, it is amazing, but I will describe
it to you. Donald Trump was speaking at about six

(00:56):
thirteen Eastern time to a crowd of thousands in Pennsylvania,
where the sounds pop pop pop rang out. Donald Trump
appeared to grab his ear before well croutching to the
ground with a secret service jumped on him and held
him on the ground for a number of seconds. In fact,
it felt like minutes watching this all unfold. Once the
crowds started to disperse, Donald Trump got back up with

(01:18):
the agents. He had blood coming from his ear, and
he raised his fist up at the crowd. He had
survived that what appeared to be an assassination attempt.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
As I say, it was clear, as you mentioned, Mitch,
in that video that Donald Trump appeared to be clipped
on the side of the face of the air. What
do we know? I understand Donald Trump has released a
statement on his own social media.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
He has There was some confusion at the start of
a start of that because some people suggested it may
have been glass from his teleor prompter that struck his face.
But Donald Trump put out a post on True Social
a short time ago, and this is what he had
to say, Tyler, I was shot with a bullet that
pierced the upper part of my right ear. I knew
immediately that something was wrong and that I heard a

(02:02):
whizzing sound shot and immediately felt the bullet ripping through
the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized what
was happening. Although he says he is fine and that
he's going to continue on to the Republican Convention in Milwaukee,
which starts on Monday. But extraordinary Donald Trump shot according
to his social media post, and he says he'll be

(02:23):
back rating this week in Milwaukee.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
What has Joe Biden and the Democratic Democratic Party said?

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yeah, Well, first, for things first, Joe Biden is actually
at his vacation home in Rehoboth Beach, which is about
an hour and a half from the White House. It's
in Delaware. He's given a statement there tonight where he says,
I'm grateful to hear that he's safe and doing well.
I'm praying for him and his family and all those
who were at the rally as we await further information
he see. The bottom line is that Trump rally is

(02:50):
a rally that he should able to be conducted peacefully
without any problem. But the idea that there's political violence
or violence in America like this is just unheard of.
So Joe Biden and many Democrats, including barac Obarmat and
I coming out with very supportive statements. We also know
Tyler that Joe Biden is actually going back to the

(03:10):
White House tonight after this. It's unclear if he's going
to make a speech to the nation when he gets
in after midnight Eastern time, which is around four o'clock
in the afternoon in New Zealand. But Joe Biden has
put out a supportive statement of Donald Trump.

Speaker 2 (03:23):
Any indication on how this happened, Mitch, you have been
to many of these campaign rallies and security is incredibly
tight to be able to get anywhere close to these
presidential nominees. Are question starting to swell on how the
heck this happened?

Speaker 3 (03:38):
Yeah, they certainly are. Where was the Secret Service? Where
was the police at the time. And we've also been
told that from the district attorney in Butler County where
the swartz in Pennsylvania, he see the shooter had actually
been outside of the security perimeter, meaning he did not
go through the airport style security that everyone including the
media has to go through. So it's believed the shooter

(04:00):
was outside the event and tried to shoot at Donald
Trump from some sort of roof of a barn or
some sort of facility nearby. And what's really interesting too
is the media have obviously been interviewing people that were there,
and there are a couple of people saying that they
saw this person on the roof moments before the shooting
happened and tried to alert the police, but by that time,

(04:21):
really it was too late because the shooter was in position.
And as you said at the top of your piece there,
the shooter has been killed by the Secret Service, two
people critically injured, and obviously Donald Trump has been injured
there as well.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
Very early in the shocking story. Do we know much
about the gunman at the stage? Mitch, Very little information
at that stage. There are some reported images emerging on
social media of the gunman before and after they were killed.
It's hard to know what's verified and what's not on
social media at the moment, but I dare say this
is the United States, things will come out very fast

(04:55):
in the next couple of hours around who the shooter was,
what they were looking at online, where they got the
weapons from, all the things like that. The opinion pieces
have already started coming out. Out. Much that this event
has handed Donald Trump the presidency is that the feeling
that you are getting on the ground and the people
that you're speaking to, well.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
That's what I was going to say. I've had people
message me on social media tonight from back home in
New Zealand, people that I know that work here in
the United States and the press that have said similar
things that you know, it will be very hard for
Donald Trump to be beaten by now well, you know,
going into the election in November. But you know, there
is still quite a wee way before the election, so
that's hard to say. I think one thing's important to

(05:34):
raise with you tonight that I'm seeing on social media, Tyler,
is that after the shooting happened, there were Republicans on
who went on social media. I'm not just talking porters,
but people who are elected in office saying things about
you know, the Biden administration really caused this. Like I've
got one person here, Mike Collins from Georgia. I believe
he's a congressman or some sort of representative for the Republicans.

(05:57):
He said, Joe Biden sent the orders. Another person here,
jd Vance, who's in line to be a vice presidential
candidate for Donald Trump at the convention this week. This
is what he said on social media today. Is not
just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden
campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist

(06:18):
who must be stopped at all costs that rhetorically directly
to President Trump's attended assassination. So the Republicans early on
not holding back saying that the Biden campaign indirectly had
something to do with the causation of this.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
The frightening aspect of all this, as you're saying, Mitch,
is that the simmering tensions political tensions in America have
been known for some time. It does feel like a tinderbox,
and you are on the ground. There is their hope
that both camps, the Democrats and Republicans, as much as possible,
do what they can to quell any tensions that may
arise from this.

Speaker 3 (06:51):
Well, look, I think some of the lawmakers that I've
been talking about, not the Republicans I just gave examples of,
but some of the more senior Democrats and Republicans will
be very aware of what you described as the simmering
tensions in the country at the moment. And that's why
I think some of these statements we're seeing from lawmakers
are so supportive and apolitical about what's happened to Donald

(07:13):
Trump tonight. I know Nancy Pelosi, someone that Donald Trump
has really rallied against those two don't like each other.
That goes without saying. But she posted tonight as one
of those who family has been the victim of political violence.
I know firsthand that political violence of any kind has
no place in our society. I thank god that former
President Trump is safe. So that's from Nancy Pelosi. And

(07:35):
as I say, I think politicians are very aware of
the simmer intensions and will want to do everything they
can to quell any violence that might result in the
coming days.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
And going ahead with the remainder of the presidential campaignments.
You mentioned there that Trump is going to carry on
to his next event, but do you expect there will
be some consideration made to limiting the number of public events,
both for the Republicans and for the Democrats.

Speaker 3 (07:59):
I'm not sure they're going to limit them. I know
that there'll be extra extra security at all of these events.
Describe to you what it's like already at these events.
You know, I went to a Trump rally in Latrobe, Pennsylvania,
in the same state with this happened tonight, and there
are swarms of Secret Service agents, there are local police,
there are just hundreds of law enforcement. You have to

(08:19):
go through what I described earlier as airport style security,
so they're going to need to find another way to
ramp up security even more. I think it's unlikely that
the candidates will want less rallies. This is the time
where they really need to convince the public they are
the right person to take over the White House at
a time when the polls are really close, so they're
going to want to be out there in front of people.

(08:41):
But I think the Department of Justice and the Secret
Service are going to be really investigating in the coming
days how they can keep people safe. And as I
mentioned that Republican National Convention is going to be front
and center in front of the country and indeed the
world this week with Donald Trump will be speaking, and
you can expect that place to be Fort Knox going
in the coming days. I bet they are going to

(09:02):
have a lot more police there than originally planned.

Speaker 2 (09:05):
You mentioned there that this is an astoric day and event,
and absolutely it is the last time that there was
a president or presidential nominee injured by an attempted assassination
attempt would have been Reagan. Am I right with that?

Speaker 3 (09:19):
I can't think of any one other than Reagan. I
think it is absolutely extraordinary that this has happened tonight.
Donald Trump holds so many of these rallies across the country,
in all different parts. I went to one in the
Bronx here in New York not long ago. As I said,
there's lots of security, but you really don't expect something
like this to happen. I think when the shots rang
out tonight, there was this obvious sense and immediate sense

(09:40):
rather of just absolute confusion. People surprised that this had happened.
But then within moments they snapped into the reality that
this had happened to Donald Trump and the Secret Service
jumped on the stage.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Mitch, thank you very much for your time. It's going
to be a long night for you. All the best
and we'll chat again soon.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
I appreciate it. Thank you, Tyler.
