Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Forcefix Howard by News Talks. It'd be welcome
on into.
Speaker 3 (00:22):
The Sports Fix.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
The last edition of the week, the first edition of November.
It is the first the eleventh, twenty twenty four. My
name is Darcy Waldgrave and in the podcast today we're
going to focus in Nestley on the A League Derby
n Wellington. This is gold for football, this is gold
for football in New Zealander's Auckland to take on Wellington.
(00:46):
David Dome, the GM of the Phoenix, has been there
right since the get go. He joins us to talk
about the good, the bad, the ugly, and a bit
of public service as well, if you intend ongoing to
the game up after that. I can't keep my mouth
shut around cricket, because well I love cricket. We'll talk
about Wa Kitty, what is coming up in Mumbai, the chances,
the possibility of maybe and sweeping India. They'll need a
(01:11):
long hand will broom with very stiff bristles, but I
think they've got it going on. And after that we'll
be joined by Elijah a few, He said the sports reporter,
as we take a look at the big sports stories
of the day, lurking on a leaner withinside the chamber,
that is our plan. Let's get God in other news,
(01:35):
Let's get a quick air full of sport today. Retiring
halfback Shawn Johnson is certainly can park the emotion surrounding
his last ever match at Mounts Smart. Already blessed Warriors
NRL farewell of Penrose Stadium, the thirty four year old
will guide the kiwis around the park against Thonger and
(01:55):
tomorrow's Pacific Championship showdown.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
I'm just loving being in the moment, being president and
just taking it all in, not having an overthink it
like it's going to be special running ahead tomorrow and
its special every time I've been out of.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Runn are I'm going to be excited.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
I'm going to take it all in.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
The later Jordy Barrett is back and he's ready to
return to Test rugby after nearly six week sideline with
a knee injury. Barrett has missed the last two tests
for the All Blacks since his emc ell injury in
the first letters load, but slots back in its second
five Sunday Morning's visit to twicken And to face England.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
It's about the time frame six weeks, so everything's going
to plan. And yeah, just grateful that it wasn't something
significant and long term and I'm back in a position
now where i can play for the Orbits again, so
I'm very grateful.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
And the Black Cats are expecting the third Test against
India to be a huge challenge, especially with sizzling temperatures
in Mumbai. New Zealand has already won the series. I'll
say it again. His elevants already won Missouris and now
skipper Tom Latham says they have to win the battle
against the Elements.
Speaker 6 (03:04):
I haven't got shocked by the heat to be there.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
It was pretty hot out there.
Speaker 5 (03:07):
Get another chat and I will certainly be looking forward
to lost presented to us.
Speaker 4 (03:11):
It's getting heart out here. Please don't take off all
your clothes. And that's sport today.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
We've got just the ticket. It's sports fix newstalks e.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
It's a massive game of a league of football this weekend.
We have not seen anything this big in the history
of the A League. When we look at New Zealand competition,
David Dome joins us now is the general manager, the
boss man of the Phoenix has been for what seventeen
odd years. This is huge, this lo called Derby David massive.
Speaker 6 (03:46):
The whole club's just so excited about it, and I
know the Auckland guys are as well. We've been waiting
a long time for a second team. We've often looked
at the Australian clubs with their derbies, you know, the
two Melbourne clubs and the two Sydney clubs going at it,
and we never really had that. But the amount of
interest around this game is incredible and the ticket sales
have really gone through the roof in the last couple
of days and we're literally right now we're opening up
(04:07):
more bays as we speak to accommodate more ticket sales.
So look, just can't wait for the game and it's
going to be so exciting.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Give us a rough idea. What are you looking at?
How many heads are reckon they're going to get through?
How many bodies? How many bums on seats?
Speaker 6 (04:18):
David Well, I think as at least twenty thousand, maybe
twenty one, and we're now targeted our regular season record,
which is twenty four thousand. Now we've got against Western
United and we came back after COVID. It was our
first came back home up to COVID. We got twenty
four and a half thousand. So that's the target now
for the team and it's certainly tracking towards that. It
will depend on how it foils on the game on
(04:39):
game day, but the weather forecast is great, so I
don't think that's going to be an issue, but it.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Could, yeah, it could be.
Speaker 6 (04:44):
Realistically, we're targeting our highest of a regular season attendance.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
The game, David, is of utmost importance. That's what people
want to see. They want to see a quality game
of football. But you'd be insane if you didn't make
the most of this opportunity. So I've seen you guys
have been fine planes around poking the borax. What else
is the Wellington Phoenix doing around this fixture to really
bring it to life, to make it more than just
(05:09):
a football match.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
Yeah, there's a lot of activation around the game. I
know both of the supporting clubs are going big on
the game and they're they're having functions before the game
and after the game. Look, there will be a lot
of activity during the game and around the concourse at
the stadium, a lot of stuff for the kids. But
we've also got potentially well we're hoping that we're going
to have something for display on the game and tying
(05:32):
in our relationship with our Manifano partner Chatiawa, and we
really want to make the most of it because, as
you say, it's a once in a lifetime, it's never
going to happen again to be the first yearver Derby,
so we're going to go big on it, and we
want to make sure that it's something for the fans
to remember.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Is this a time as well to encourage non football
fans to the game, to get them along based on
what this actually means, Are you looking at that or
more targeting the actual football audience themselves.
Speaker 6 (05:57):
We know that when we're selling more than twenty thousand tickets,
it's the general public that it's coming. Yes, it's the
football fans are certainly there. Then the sports fans are
coming because they're interested, and then you've get the wider
population who are coming along because they know it's an
event and they know it's something special. So that's definitely happening.
Those people are coming along because it has sparked the
interest of the general public who want it, Like I say,
(06:18):
who really want to be there for something that's ever
going to happen again.
Speaker 4 (06:21):
So how the study of troops right now that will
come back from Perth. It's a dog of a journey
before you're playing a local derby. Hey, heavy are their legs?
They're feeling all right? You've been out the author, your
clipboard and your whistle.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Having you David under the clipboard, not Greth Morgan.
Speaker 6 (06:35):
But I know you're right. It's a long trip, but
it's good to get that out of the way early.
So we've got that God you win in there, got
our three points come back, but they're recovered well. So
they've had a good few days of recovery. Chief has
had them out on the training ground a few times.
We're confident that the team's going to be in good
shape to take on to take on Auckland. And look,
I really think it's going to be a great game.
(06:55):
These are two really good teams top two, one and
two on the table and whoever comes out of us
not only gets the bragging rights, but it goes top
of the table as well.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Public service announcement plainly there's information you need to get
out there and tell people who are coming to the Dame.
And I know the first thing in to say get
there early.
Speaker 6 (07:12):
Get there early. It's a five o'clock kickoff. We're going
to open up the gate ninety minutes before, so from
three through three thirty onwards, the gates are going to
be open. But look, with this amount of people coming,
we know it does take a little bit longer to
get through the gates. Don't leave it to the last minute.
There is activities going on at the stadium. We know
that both Wellington Yellow Fever and Auckland's the Port have
(07:33):
marched to the matches, so that'll be interesting as well.
But you don't leave the last minute. I get there
early and enjoy you entertainment around the game. And like
I say, the forecast is going to be great, so
we'll all everything will be in the sun.
Speaker 4 (07:43):
And another thing as well for interested parties. You know
you still got fans of the Phoenix in Auckland. You
do know that, don't you. Is it true you're not
coming back? What you've got a TBC possibly? But is
the Phoenix got a future playing at what one of
their fortresses, Eden Park?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
You come back up here David or not.
Speaker 6 (08:01):
Well, we love Eating Park and we're dead keen. I mean,
I'm hopeful that we'll play with that Phoenix and Auckland
will play some game at Eden Park in the future.
We are looking at it and we're trying to get
that across the line. But you know, that's a that's
a three way conversation. Now it's not as easy as
it used to be in the old days. I mean,
we are going to christ Church. We are going to
play there at the end of gym. Really excited about
that as well. And then of course that's a three
(08:21):
year deal. So the first game is at the Orange
there are the current stadium and then of course we
moved to one New Zealand stadium after that. So look
really looking forward to christch But you know, at some
stage in the future we can come back to Auckland
outside the derby it's playing Auckland baby Eden Park. They'd
be huge.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
So there's a will. It's just matter and finding out
a way and hopefully sooner rather than later you can
confirm this what we know by the end of the
season or not.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
Yeah, I'd say so, yeah, I'd look David Doan.
Speaker 4 (08:50):
Thanks very much. Hey, you enjoy the weekend. This is
huge for football in New Zealand, for football in Auckland
and Wellington as well. Roll on the derby and everybody
keep it friendly. Let's spread the daha, right David, thanks
for your time.
Speaker 6 (09:04):
Thanks DARCYE. I appreciate support.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
This is Sports Fix, your daily does of sports us
by news talks.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Evy unlikely that the black Caps will appear in the
World Test Championship Final. I've heard that before. It was
unlikely the first time around as well. But the black
Caps went on a tear and somehow, by Hugo, by
crook and year there was points Reductions managed to find
themselves in that final and they didn't just compete, they
(09:35):
rolled the Indians and won the inaugural competition. Is there
a chance of this actually happening again? After Sri Lanka
did the dirty on in New Zealand, basically the chances
were all but extinguished. No one thought that the black
Caps will go to India and roll the Indians. Maybe
(09:55):
one game, certainly not a series and a clean sweep
are whitewise, I don't think so. The team are on
the cusp of that right now. If that happens, then
they welcome England into their yard. They roll them three
on the bounce as well, and the World Test Championship
Final once a pipe dream suddenly becomes a reality. India,
(10:20):
of course, and Australia at the top of the world
right now, they've got a series. They'll be fighting each other,
taking points off each other. So in our control, let's say,
my control got nothing to do with it. But then
the black Caps control is this Test against India? After that?
Speaker 3 (10:37):
The English at home? Sure?
Speaker 4 (10:39):
Why not?
Speaker 3 (10:40):
So can they.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Get it done at when Kitty we talked about this
previously and said that a position of rage is not
a position to come from in any form of sport.
The Indians were frustrated, they were upset, they were angry,
and they played like it. This is not taking away
from New Zealand. They came to the party, they played
to their strengths, they played good, sensible cricket and eventually
(11:04):
it was just too much for the Indians. Mitchell san no,
what a star turn. Of course, the star turn this
time around? Would it be ageas Patel a magnificent ten
wicket bag last time he played here, only the third
man in history to do it. Is it Patel's turn?
Is it time for somebody else to lead the black
(11:26):
Caps from the front. Well, I don't know, but we'll
find out over the next five days if the magic
of Test cricket continues.
Speaker 2 (11:34):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
And here have we got to the chamber today? We're
leaning on my Leana and drinking on my beer. It's
a Elijah. He's a news talk ZEBB sports journo. Elijah,
good to have you in here. Are you surprised that
I'm not Piney?
Speaker 7 (11:54):
I have a little bit. I was thinking this is
not hes wearing glasses there in the cap and.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
Piney's a very busy man, you know, so I'm coming in.
I'm deputizing for him. We get to talk now about
the big sports stories that I don't even know where
to start. There was so much on today. Is it
fair to talk about the derby? This is the flavor,
isn't it? Kind of Yeah?
Speaker 7 (12:14):
It's the first big New Zealand professional football derby for
Phoenix Auckland Auckland f C. I guess when the new
Auckland team was announced, this was the big date that
was marked on the calendar. The first initial matchup down
on the sky Stadium. So I'm really looking forward to
this matchup.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Do you care who wins? Have you got any skin
in the game at all or not?
Speaker 5 (12:35):
Well?
Speaker 7 (12:35):
I don't have an Orkany f C shirt, but I
am currently we're in a Navy blue shirt, so that
probably tells you who I'm going for.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
So they didn't send you also missed out unfortunately, no
live you're missed out. So you're going to lean towards
Auckland because it is your city. But it's one two
in the table. This is not an easy one to pack.
In fact, I think the draws playing three sixty five
that might be a better.
Speaker 3 (12:58):
Way to lean you.
Speaker 7 (12:59):
Yeah, it's definitely high stakes top of the table clash,
but I definitely think Orkan f C is going to
come out. I mean, the easy cop out would be
a one all drawer and just leave it at that
and at them clash later on the season.
Speaker 3 (13:10):
But how important is this for Auckland football because we've
we've seen.
Speaker 4 (13:14):
So many teams come and go and it's just been
it's been a dust bowl of recent times. They got this,
they've started off with the raw. They got to keep
going the way or people will walk it's awkward for you.
Speaker 7 (13:25):
I mean, this is the big test, going down to
sky Stadium. The Yellow Fever's gonna be waiting for them.
The Port's going to dock up on down into the
Wellington the Harbor. But I'm just excited see yellow Fever
and the ports. Well. I'll not go out, obviously not physically,
but obviously that's going to be a whole lot going
on there in terms of fan fit.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
And we don't want it turning into England.
Speaker 7 (13:46):
No.
Speaker 4 (13:46):
I remember going to games in England, was living in
London and mounted police lined up between the two sets
of fans. We don't want to get into that. One
may years ago when Everdon came to town in christ
Its way back in the day and he put an
Evitode shirt on and he beat himself up in the
stands just to make them feel it. Yeah, bro, there
you go. Hey. It should be good screen action going on.
(14:09):
The cricket on one because you can just pair it
that every now and then, and then the football at
five on the other should be huge. All Blacks England
another massive game. We don't really need to give that
prop any more traction to me.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
I'm not going to say his name.
Speaker 7 (14:23):
No, I don't want to say his name either, but
I guess that's a cheap way to stir up a
bit of dramas and they're going for the But.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
Do you need to really know the game?
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Like there England New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
I don't think there's a bigger look plainy South Africa.
New Zealand's huge, but there's something about the animosity between
England and the All Blacks.
Speaker 3 (14:40):
You can't buy it right.
Speaker 7 (14:41):
Yeah, Well, he's not even playing on Saturdays, so I mean,
if it was a current player, maybe, But at the
end of the day, the players are going to do
the talking out on the field, and I guess the
hucker the prematch formalodies and that initial five minutes is
going to be really interesting. The hotly anticipated to watch.
Speaker 4 (14:57):
Yeah, and I don't know if I will watch it
because I've got so much to watch a team to
wait when the whistle goes, I'm in I'm watching it there.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
But just looking at this team, it's a strong team.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
The All Black team is a strong team, so expectations
i'd expect going through the roof. My big fear is
a lot of these guys haven't played in the best.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Part of the month. Not that England really have either,
but they might get just jumped, They might get mugged
the All Blacks.
Speaker 7 (15:23):
And you think by at this point with the Northern Tour,
Razor would have figured out who his combinations are. He's
obviously gone with Zima at half back, with Boden Barrot
at ten. Is that how he's going to go with
things moving forward? Is him still testing things and testing
the waters a little bit? But you think he would
have figured things out of his lineup by now.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
Which it makes sense to me though, doesn't That good
teacher is the one that's had a lot of time
in the Jersey why Roy Guard's on his way back
and bike. Personally, I think that Bowden maybe he's lost
a bit of his sting and pace, but as far
as game manager, I think his streets ahead of Damien
McKenzie and you need that, especially in a fixture.
Speaker 7 (15:58):
Like this, definitely, and he's obviously hoping that Damien McKenzie
can provide that impact off the bench as we've come
to known the bench.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
What about the loose Ford trio, because there's a discussion
around it might not be how it's made out, but
there's not a lot to complain there again, Sam Kine
still providing a lot of the strength, the strength to
the arm of that.
Speaker 3 (16:19):
But then Satiti and Savia. This is amazing lose Ford.
Speaker 7 (16:22):
Trio exactly it is. And I think the one thing
with that number sevenes is the fact that Kane is
still starting obviously means that they still haven't figured out
who that seven is for the future. This is Pupula
who's out injured, Blackadder and Jacobson obviously, so that loose
fill forwards stngs have taken quite a hit. But they
obviously need to come up with a good succession plan
(16:43):
quick for that number seven ines.
Speaker 4 (16:44):
Which is part of what it's all about, that, isn't it.
They're going to do that. I'm not really sure if
we'll forgive any losses over the next few games for
that unearthing of the next tear of talent bent and
I never know what you've got to put up with.
And let's go some quick packs, say, let's look at
some of the big sport over the weekend. Give us
how and why AB's at fifteen. They've kind of been
(17:05):
last of it, haven't they. And the tumult they take
on months now there's a historic game.
Speaker 7 (17:10):
Yeah, it's gonna be good. I'm going to lean towards
the All Backs fifteen, even though I think Monster's obviously
got that chemistry or Backs fifteen will take a little
bit while to jail together. But I think the class
of the All Backs fiften, some of those players will
get him across the line.
Speaker 4 (17:22):
I think Monster are going to have the best crowd,
not quite but almost the best crowd in world sport,
and that might just help them. And talk about the
best crowd, we know where that goes. Kiwi's tongue at
Mount Smart. Going and watching any game rugby or rugby
league with the tongue and community is off the hook. Good.
It's almost worth going just for that, not even the game.
Speaker 7 (17:44):
Yeah exactly. Sometimes it feels like it's an away game
for the kiwis the way you got the red wave
that Tom going to have that Mount Smart and I
think it's going to be very very close. Actually, I'm
going to pick the Keiries by two.
Speaker 3 (17:54):
That close.
Speaker 4 (17:55):
I think when you base that on a dominant four pack,
you think the Tongue's have got enough up the front
to get crunched because they're at a game under their belt.
Speaker 3 (18:02):
The key We now don't know what to do and
what not.
Speaker 7 (18:04):
Yeah, I think for me it's down to the forwards,
those guys like Filloel Blake and Talmuloa and you know,
going up against Fisher Horrison's halp in it, that's gonna
be a great matchup.
Speaker 4 (18:12):
Oh, you will see the fireworks from across the other
side of town, Lawson and brazil Burg weekend for the
young guy, now that he's got the entire population of
Spain and Mexico barking against him, you've got that big
old smile. You're loving this, aren't you.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (18:27):
I'm loving though. He said he's not here to make friends.
That's what it's all about, you know, he's been saying
that all week.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
Is that about making friends?
Speaker 3 (18:33):
It's about winning.
Speaker 7 (18:34):
That's It's what he's fighting for a seat. I mean,
what else do you want him to do?
Speaker 2 (18:37):
You know?
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Oh, just bend over gold, Sure, come on, you go
straight through.
Speaker 4 (18:42):
No, he's not and this stands the reason. That's why
they've got on there, because he can fight for everything
you can get. But yeah, one hundred and twenty eight
million people on Mixico hate the guy's guts going holiday
and there for a while, but yeah, it was he
going to do pick up points that were after pretty much,
isn't it.
Speaker 7 (18:58):
Yeah, he has to, especially if Fernando, Lonzo and Peters
don't pick up points.
Speaker 4 (19:04):
And there's Jackie Snoda as well. He's fighting in that
seat with the trouble with the Liams. He's face that
he's driving a Tonka toy. He really needs to better
drive that huge over the way Interlagos. If you don't
know Formula one as an old school track, it is
so worth watching. Some of the sequences are beyond start finisher,
(19:24):
just incredible outlaws in school points. That's all I'll be
happy with.
Speaker 3 (19:28):
And the black Caps take on India.
Speaker 4 (19:31):
Can they get it done?
Speaker 7 (19:32):
Surely the whitewash I can feel it for ARSI. Surely
we've already made history in both tests this season. Why
not make it at the third time?
Speaker 4 (19:41):
And then the start of the drive. Isn't it to
the World Test Championship Because now it's a possibility again.
Just requires one after win after win after win, which
is exactly what they did.
Speaker 7 (19:51):
The first time around to keep the momentum going.
Speaker 4 (19:53):
