Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. It'd be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
It'd be why Hello there, and welcome on into the
Sports Fix. My name is Darcy Walter Grave. This podcast
is all you need to know about sport, well for
today anyway. It is a Tuesday. It is the first
of October twenty twenty four. Coming up in this program
will be joined by Darren Bezie, head coach of the
(00:40):
All White just named their team for the next two fixtures,
one away, one at home and then on November two
more home based fixtures for the All Whites. Down Basie
joins us shortly. I've got some opinion around the World
Athletics Indoor Championships. Is that really likely to turn up
in a sierro? I certainly hope so. Enjoining me in
(01:02):
the chamber to throw around some sporting concepts is Clay
Wilson his News Talks abstrecta of sport. That's our plan.
That's what we're doing.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Sit back, relax or.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
If you in your car, concentrate because there it comes.
In other news, this was said we were there here
we go. The super Duper Pacific Rugby draw is out.
Last season, the perennial favorites drop their button right from
the get go, losing their first five matches, three of
(01:33):
them away from home. This time they have four out
of their first six fixtures in their backyard. CEO Colin
Mansbridge is hoping when you're winning consistently time and time again,
you do get a little bit less sympathy when you
complain about your draw.
Speaker 4 (01:50):
We've probably got a little bit more sympathy in.
Speaker 3 (01:52):
This time, but really it'll be a cold day in
hell before anyone spares a tear for the Saders. Steven
adamscuse me, superstar baller, will be back in the NBA
this season after a year out with a bung knee.
He's back with the Houston Rockets, where he worked with
Bright Young, Shuchting God Jalen Green. They also banned bodies
with everyone and won't Yapwell.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Any guys that I work with, I have to figure
out how can I help them the best. That's what
the play requires. We'll forgo all that stuff al but
just had something to do to I guess broke on
the script.
Speaker 3 (02:25):
You hit those detas on the screens and real hate demands.
Black Fern's skipper is still finding rays of light through
the gloom of defeats to Ireland in the w x
V one. I'm really proud though, of the attitude that
the team showed in those moments to continue to try
and win the next moment, regardless of whether that was
a tech or defense. And it's the English Roses next
(02:46):
get in the habit some sports stars speaking you sad.
Speaker 2 (02:52):
It's Sportsfix with Dancie valde Greve.
Speaker 3 (02:56):
Event focused that, unfortunately is rapidly where the attention and
sport is going. It's not about the grind of an
entire competition unless you are core fan. It's more about
the event itself and what you gain out of being
a part of a big event. We've seen the effect
(03:17):
that's had when it comes to the Women's World Cup
and football, for example, the Women's World Cup in rugby
for example. This next event that we may be part
of could be epic. The likelihood of it settling here
in New Zealand I don't know, but it was announced
today that Athletics New Zealand, with government support, are working
(03:38):
on a bid to bring the World Indoor Athletics Championships
to this country in two thy and twenty eight. No,
it's not the World Athletics Championships, it's the indoor Championships.
And oddly, even though it is indoor, can still actually
be held outdoors, which means Eden Park might be a
goer or more so to Kaha, the new stadium in
(04:00):
christ Church, and I think when it comes to people
coming and visiting the mighty South Island and christ Juge,
this is a shot in arm that the locals and
of course the stadium would really appreciate, could be huge,
should be something that we look forward to hosting, and
we pull out every plug to host as well. The
only problem is that it is in the Olympic year,
(04:23):
so how many athletes would come along to the bottom
end of the world before they disappeared at LA to
train for the major event. We don't know if you
might miss out, but I think when it comes to
an event of this magnitude, people would turn up anyway
to watch our stars, to watch the global stars that
turn up and what would be a fantastic few days
(04:45):
entertainment under the roof at Takaha or of course at
Eden Park and I'm sorry to need it'll never happen
at fourside bar because you've got no accommodation down there.
Looking forward to seeing this go and go off, whether
it well or not. I shrugged my shoulders, but I
love the fact that you said on athletics and the government,
I'm looking toward bringing something like this to our shores.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sports Fix with Darcy.
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Waldgrave All Whit's football is the flavor right here, right now.
Chris Wood, Liberato Katacchi no, I haven't got these guys
on here, and Marco Staminik are among the squad that
have been named for the home game in October. We're
joined by well, the man who picked them, the head coach,
Darren Bazi. Darren, welcome to the show. You've got to
like the strength of the squad there you've picked. There
(05:35):
are some great names, some great players, some consistency to you.
Speaker 5 (05:39):
Yeah, this is a strong squad, an exciting squad to
bring back to this part of the world. So, yeah,
we know World Cup qualifiers. It's the business end. The
players are all aware that we've got to get this
job done so that we can go back to the
World Cup. So yeah, it's a strong squad, pretty consistent
from the last group, you know, a couple of couple
of changes, but yeah, I think people will be excited
(05:59):
to see you know, Woodsy coming back, and Marc o'
libby and Garbs and Oldie and you know numerous others
that are coming back to playing these games.
Speaker 3 (06:08):
Name what do they call you, Darren.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
I'm just bes just all on with that, just like
the Felts on.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
The snooker table. Bas So, three changes from the US tour,
so tell us about those. Tyler Bend and Ken Howison
and storm Roo returning too.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
That's got to work.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Yeah, I mean, obviously Tyler. It was disappointing to lose
Tyler the last tour. You know, he got a concussion
injury the Saturday before he was coming to America. So
he got through that, he did the ten days stand
down and has played the last two games for reading.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
So he's back fully fit, which is great.
Speaker 5 (06:44):
You know, he's he's a really good addition for the squad.
You know, we've added storm Rooms, the Storms, a player
that I know really well. We've been tracking him for
a long time, you know, we've tried to bring him
in a couple of times for for the tours, the
Nation's Cup and for the Egypt Tour, but you know,
he had a couple of injuries that sort of it
just wasn't the right time for him. So yeah, it's
really pleasing to actually finally better bring him back into
(07:06):
the squad. And he's excellent ad and that'll ad to it.
And then yeah, we lost Joe Bell for this one.
So Cam Howison is a really good replacements. He did
really well for us at the Nation's Cup. He's obviously
joined Auckland, so he's now in a professional environment. You know,
he's a great lad and he'll add to the squad.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
No Bill to Loma either, Cinneron's not there. Do you
want to talk us through those two decisions.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
Yeah, so Bill, obviously he's you know, he's in a
position where he hasn't played much football for his club
for about a year now. We brought him in as
a late replacement when we were in America when we'd
got an injury, and part of that was he was
very close. You know, we were in America. He obviously
lives in America, so it was easy and quick for
him to get to us and we know him and
(07:53):
we know he's a good player, just lacking that game fitness,
so he's aware of, you know, what he's got to do.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
For Finn's a little bit different. You know.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
He he joined Portland in July and then he came
away to the Olympics for three weeks and then went
to the club for three weeks and then came to America.
So we sort of feel like we've we've taken him
out of his new environment quite a lot. Or obviously
did the Nation's Cup with us as well, so he
actually hasn't played. I mean, he did very well against
(08:23):
America a couple of weeks ago, but before that he
hadn't played since the Olympics.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
So I think it's difficult.
Speaker 5 (08:29):
He's gone to a new club, big club Portland, he's
been sub hasn't got on the pitch yet, and I
think part of that might be, you know, he just
hasn't spent much time at the club, you know, because
of the international commitments. So you know, he needs a
better fitness, he needs to sort of get his opportunity
at the club. So we felt like this opportunity, you know,
with the other players that we have in regards to
(08:51):
Nando Tyler, Boxhell and Tommy Smith as center backs. We
felt this is a good opportunity for Finn to miss
this one, spend a lot of time at his club,
do some fitness work with the club, and hopefully put
himself in a position where Phil Neville puts him on
the pitch for Portland, which would be great for us.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Darren Basily, head coach the All Whites joining us. Is
it fair to say that the depth, I won't say
is unparallel at the moment, but you've got great depth.
If there's any position where you think you are still lacking,
where would that be, where do you have to improve?
The backup go?
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Yeah, you're right, we've got good depth.
Speaker 5 (09:27):
You know, when we've put this squad out there and
you know, and we're missing Joe bell Sapri Sing, Callum, Mcowart, Fincerma,
Bill to I Looma, You're Marco Rohas, Joey Champney's Maxi
Matter and numerous other players you know that could that
could get called up. Plus you know, plus there's a
lot of young kids that are knocking on the door
as well. So we've got a deep squad. The challenges
(09:49):
tracking them all and monitoring them all and you know,
trying to stay in contact with everybody, and you know,
and then making these tough decisions and picking the right
squad for each each tournament, each sort of window, and
then picking a start and eleven from that squad.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
So good challenges.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
But there, you know, that's what we want, competition for
places and we're definitely starting to build that now.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
Is there any area though we think over the next
few years you might be a little on the skinny
side and we maybe you need to work through.
Speaker 5 (10:20):
I think we've got good young players sort of pushing
in all those positions, you know, in four positions, defensive positions,
you know, the right back positions, one where you know,
we've played a lot of different players. You know, when
we look at we've had talent, Elliott da Ningham, Nico Kerwin,
you know, Tim Payne, Tyler's played there, Bill Touloh has
played there. Painey's settled down and he's the number one
(10:45):
there now, you know, and the challenge for him is
to keep that position. But yeah, I mean that's that's
probably the only position where we've had a lot of
rotation of of other players that have played in that position.
Everywhere else there's good competition, but we've been pre consistent.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
The Chamber is now Incision on Sports Fix.
Speaker 3 (11:05):
And a Chamber on a Leaner, joined by Clay will Soon.
He is the sports news editor for News Talk ZB.
Interesting non rugby stories floating out at the moment in
Cloud's bit of a relief, isn't it?
Speaker 4 (11:16):
That doesn't happen often in this country? Does it? But yeah,
a bit of all sorts floating around this week.
Speaker 3 (11:21):
Yeah, we're not talking about cracker, We're not talking about rugby.
We're going to talk about the World Athletics Championships, the
end or version, because it looks like New Zealand are
going to have a crack at it. According to the
Hell Today through Michael Burgess, that might be quid zin.
What's your gut reaction to this?
Speaker 4 (11:37):
Well, I mean, why not have a go at it?
Speaker 6 (11:39):
I suppose I In terms of athletics in New Zealand
and where it's at at the moment, you know, a
real sort of I don't know if you'd say golden generation,
but a very strong generation of athletes coming through at
the moment. I mean you rattle them off. Zoey Hobbs,
Tom wilsh Hamish Kerr, Maddie Wishy. You start to talk,
you know, you start to get up to a decent
number pretty quickly in terms of athletes that are competing
(12:00):
on the top level. And if you can get an
event like this or at least have a go for it,
why not do it. So it sounds like twenty twenty
eight is the year, and of course that's the same
year the l Olympics, so I'll be interested to hear about,
you know, how realistic it is, what they think they'll
get out of it, what it's going to take to
put it on. I mean, even the indoor Championships, while
it's kind of a secondary event in some respects to
(12:23):
the main outdoor Championships, it's still a massive event which
a lot of the big stars go to. So it
would be a great coupe and I love athletics personally,
so I'm all for it.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Without some of the superstars, though that take away from it.
I'm not sure how it's operated at indoor before that,
how many of them attend as a warm up, whether
they need to actually get some laps under your belt
for one of a better word before they disappear to
la so that lack of effectiveness from the top, would
that take anything away from the event or not? Well?
Speaker 4 (12:53):
I think naturally it would.
Speaker 6 (12:54):
Right, you want as many of the big name stars
there at an event like this is possible.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
But would you just go for the event? If I
believe the indoors, you can also have them outdoors. It's
possible according to around there are But if the christ
Takaha is finished by then that is indoor, right, you'd
think it to go there? What a way to start
that life off twenty twenty on it started off at
close airs.
Speaker 6 (13:21):
Yeah, I mean, obviously in New Zealand we're so far
away from me and in terms of venues, you know,
even the Commonwealth Games is a real push for us
here in New Zealand. To get major world championships or
major global sporting events here in New Zealand as hard.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
You know. In the past.
Speaker 6 (13:36):
Obviously we had the Football Women's Football World Cup, but
we co hosted that with Australia. But to get these
big global events is hard. So if you can have
a crack at something like this, like I say, why
not have a go for it? Okay, maybe in an
Olympic year as we often see In some sports that
have a World Championships in the same year as an Olympics,
some of the big names opt to not go to
(13:58):
those particular events. But still, I mean it would be
you'd be able to not only get I'm sure a
number of the stars would still come, but then what
a platform, what an event that be for that list
of New Zealand stars at the top level athletics we've
got at the.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Moment, I mean, the time to watch that, wouldn't you? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (14:16):
I me Zoey Hobbs, and I think she made the
I think she made the indoor indoor final, which is
sixty meters for sprint at the most recent World Indoor champs.
You know, I imagine that here on New Zealand soil
for someone like her. That would be amazing. And athletics
is a great spectator sport. You know, you can sit
(14:36):
in a stadium like that and there can be four
or five different events going on at one time, you know,
enclosed inside a cauldron of a stadium.
Speaker 4 (14:45):
So yeah, great development.
Speaker 6 (14:47):
Like I say, be interested to hear just how realistic
it is and what it's going to take to potentially
put it on.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Clay Wilson joins US. Moving to the All Whites, They've
got one, two, three, four games in the space of
just over a month OEFC. There's a friendly game up
against Malaysia there in mid November, another couple of OBSC matches,
Three of those are at home. How good is that?
I suppose for a situation, aspirational situation, this is what
(15:13):
we look at, isn't it. The football is playing here
so the kids.
Speaker 2 (15:16):
Can go, oh, I want to do that.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
Yeah, and just with the All Whites.
Speaker 6 (15:20):
Because of football and the nature of where most of
the New Zealand players play, so hard to get a
game here in New Zealand on home soil. Quite often
these games are played in the US or in Europe
and they might be on play to neutral soil because
that's the easiest and cheapest way over New Zealand football
to get the games and then to bring the players
(15:41):
in for them. So yeah, like amazing to get a
to get a home fixture. And I mean football is
clearly a massive sport here now. I mean I think
probably at youth level for a while now has been
been bigger than rugby.
Speaker 4 (15:54):
So yeah, they're doing well.
Speaker 6 (15:55):
And I guess the Oceania qualifying side of things is
kicking off. I do still in terms of the Olympic qualifying,
I guess it's almost a bit of a fatacom play,
isn't it.
Speaker 4 (16:05):
Now playing in Oceania and that's me the World.
Speaker 6 (16:08):
Cup qualifying, but yeah, and now the added aspect of
that in terms of Oceania getting a full getting a
full spot, and I don't know if I was that
stoked about that. With the increase in size of the
World Cup and that kind of thing, I think we
like if.
Speaker 3 (16:22):
They qualify for the World Cup, regardless of how easy
the root is perceivably easy that route is, it'd still
go yeah, or the World Cup, wouldn't you wouln't have
put it?
Speaker 6 (16:31):
I think i'd go yeah. In terms of watching the games,
I don't know. I mean, we all well, most people
will remember the twenty teen qualification, that game in Wellington
against a bah Rain.
Speaker 4 (16:40):
You just you're not going to get.
Speaker 6 (16:41):
That kind of of moment and what it means to
qualify for a World Cup. But I mean, to be fair,
this is really just well it is literally the start
of the wides journey to qualifying for the twenty twenty
six World Cups. So good for them to get that
campaign underway, and nice for a lot of these big
name players. Now you know, Chris Wood obviously is always
generally there, but the likes of Marco Staminich, Libby Cacacci
(17:03):
to come back and play here, because you know, players
that were born and breed here and are now doing
amazing thing in European places like this. To get that
to get a few games back here on home soil
is a cool thing for them, and like you say,
great for young kids who see those players playing in
the Champions League, in the Premier League and these kind
of competitions to go and be able to actually see
them in the flesh and watch them play.
Speaker 3 (17:24):
For wow, he's one of us. He's even got the
same stupid accent. Fantastic and he plays over there. So
to one game in Hamilton, two games in Auckland, and
of course there's the other qualifier which is not here.
Speaker 2 (17:36):
But that's all good.
Speaker 3 (17:37):
That works well. Football, of course is on the up
and up, with the A League season not so far
away now, the couple of teams involved in that. Finally, basketball,
I love myself some hoops. Jud Flavel very successful coach
with the Canterbury Rams picked up the last two titles
on the bounce. He's got two more up his sleeve
as well. He's been given the wrong It's a nice
(17:59):
legacy part of the two thousand and two World Championships,
which I hope you remember well.
Speaker 6 (18:04):
I remember very well, and what a great team that was. Obviously,
you know, full of great players that have gone on
to do great things in coaching, and someone like jud
Flavel who like his predecessor Pio Cameron, came up through
the NBL period and work for the Breakers. But obviously
Jud spent a lot of time at the Breakers.
Speaker 3 (18:22):
It's just like thirteen seasons or something crazy like that.
Speaker 6 (18:25):
And it's been very successful the last two seasons, winning
back to back titles with the Canterbury Rams. So obviously
a coach is who knows this stuff? I guess the
question I would ask here is I wonder how far
they looked and how much interest they get from offshore
for a role like this. Basketball is such a global sport.
We see in a sport like football a lot of
times you might have an UK or a European kind
(18:48):
of coach because that's where the stronghold of the Gamer
is it's a lot like Keemy rugby coaches going off
shore in terms of basketball. I wonder if if they
got interest or they looked off shore in terms of that.
To take nothing away from jud Flavel and what his
credentials are. But you know, the Tour Blacks, I guess
are trying to take that next step into you know,
it's so hard to even just qualify for these World Cups,
these Wild Championships, Olympic Games for a team like the
(19:10):
Tall Blacks these days. So but you know, Sidainly a
name that people will recognize in and someone who's in
recent times definitely had a lot of success.
Speaker 3 (19:18):
In two thousand and two, at that World carp where
Tad Bulben's coaching, Vuchinich was his assistant. He went on
to coach after Tad Baldwin left, and after Vuchinitz left,
then Pauly Hanardi turned up. Then Pauly Hanardi disappeared, and
then Pero Cameron turned up, and then now he's gone
and it's Judd Flavel and they're all there.
Speaker 4 (19:38):
In two thousand and.
Speaker 6 (19:39):
Two, we haven't asked the one question that people are
always going to be.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
To get sick of this question and the question is
Klay Wilson.
Speaker 6 (19:47):
Steven Adams actually just listening to some Steven Adams this
morning because he's obviously about to get his NBA season
underweighted his new team, the Houston Rockets, and of course
didn't play all season last season. And you know, it
has been a never ending story about if and when
Steven will ever play for the Tall Blacks, which I'm
sure most people are probably sick of, but I guess
it's a new coach and who knows what might happen there,
(20:08):
because I mean, that would be a massive shot in
the arm for a for a game, for a team,
but for a sport in this country that's you know,
has for a while now been going gangbusters at junior level,
like the amount of kids that are interested in and
playing basketball. It's just when that starts to translate into
success further up the chain. But such a hard sport
(20:28):
to be globally competitive at because.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
Outside of football, everybody plays it.
Speaker 4 (20:33):
Everybody plays it.
Speaker 6 (20:34):
Like I say, you don't have to look at how
hard it is to qualify for these world events. But
you know, obviously wish jud Flavel all the best, and
you know someone who the players will know very well
and have a lot of respect for for sure, I'll
have to.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Stop calling him game day j because that's what he
was back my old days, Rabi. He joined us every
game day to talk hoops. It was lovely stuff. Clay
Wilson's Talking ZB Sport editor. Thanks for your time and
your opinions always please to my friend.
