This is Source Fix Howard by News Talk said B.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
Hi there and welcome along to a fresh episode of
the Sports Flex Podcast, the last one for this working week.
If in fact, Monday to Friday is your working week,
it is Friday, October eighteen. I'm Jason Pine.

Speaker 4 (00:32):
Yeah, some of us work to Saturday, Piney. Just so
you know, I'm Darcy Watergrove, Brad to have you all
on board.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Some of us work till Sunday, Darcy, but we can
we can chat about that another time.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
Now.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
Much as you and I enjoy being part of the
Sports Flex podcast, I'm always intrigued by the guests that
you managed to procure.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
Got a good one for us today, Christopher Kins.

Speaker 4 (00:53):
I'd say he's rather handy, noses cricket inside out, bowler, batsman,
So really interested, really keen to talk to Chris about
what happened last night, because there was extraordinary.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Pony extraordinary as one adjective, there are many others we
could use.

Speaker 5 (01:08):
We'll kick that around in the chamber as well.

Speaker 3 (01:10):
I've got a few thoughts on New Zealand's newest professional franchise,
and these other bits and pieces as well, So let's
get into it.

Speaker 5 (01:18):
In other news, Let's start.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
As always with a look at some of the biggest
sports stories floating around today. Key we cyclist Dali Williston
has become a world champion on the track and den
Mark Wallaston in the slick screen.

Speaker 6 (01:31):
If she has anything left she has the advantage at
a long finishing straight and Wolston stepped up on the
outside of the chat to Picky will get sir, much
as Wolston cleans gold in the elimination.

Speaker 3 (01:42):
Here that's Ellie Wallaston winning the elimination race, adding to
her bronze from the ten kilometer scratch race on the
opening day. A shock to the women's cricketing world's natural order.
Up to the next side, it goes, they're looking too.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
One in South Africa bridge.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
To judge us let's show South Africa beating Australia in
the semi finals of the Teach Women's World Cup and
Auckland FC play their first ever A League football match
tomorrow against Brisbane Raw at Mount Smart Stadium. But Wellington
Phoenix coach John Carlo Italiano says he won't be watching.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
No, I won't watch.

Speaker 7 (02:21):
I'll worry about Auckland until round three prep Washington because
I have to worry about my game. All I focus
on is WeSC nighted for this week and next week
will be pert.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Leading of it. We've got just the ticket. It's sports
Vix how by News Talks IVY.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
New Zealand's newest professional sporting franchise will officially come into
existence tomorrow when Auckland FC played their first A League
men's football game, having been awarded the license just over
here ago. The Black Knights, led by their billionaire owner
Bill Foley, are going to host Brisbane Raw at what's
said to be a sold out Mount Smart Stadium. Feels
to me like Auckland FC have arrived at the start

(03:01):
line in pretty good shape. The roster for starters is
a good one. Outside of the five all out imports,
preference has been given to local talent. Eighteen of the
twenty six contracted players are kiwis and while you never
really know until they play, the imports are certainly well credentialed,
most notably club captain Hiroki Sakai, who brings the experience

(03:23):
of three World Cups and more than seventy caps for Japan.
Off the field, the hype machine has been in full
swing with that sollout expector tomorrow, over twenty five thousand
set to pack the stands where Warriors fans normally watch
and worship their heroes. Tomorrow, it'll be all about the
round ball taking center stage. And when you consider that

(03:44):
the last two expansion clubs in the A League drew
very modest opening day crowds, Auckland FC have pushed the
right buttons to get bums on their seats. Of course,
the proof will be in the ongoing pudding, if you like,
when the opening day hype wears off and the team
needs to attract crowds every couple of weeks. But the
team itself can help that by winning matches, and it

(04:05):
feels as though they've done all they can to engage
the commit unity and get typically partisan local club members
curious at the very least about this new beast. So
let's look forward to Bill Foley's brave new world, a
world he isn't justin to make up the numbers. His
ice hockey team was immediately competitive, making the playoffs regularly

(04:26):
and winning the Stanley Cup after just six years. The
Phoenix have been around for eighteen years and they've never
won any self aware, can Bill's big bucks and boundless
enthusiasm fast track the Black Knights to the winner's circle
We're about to find out.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
This is Sportsfex, your daily dose of source news, towing
by News Talks.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Evy Christopher Ken's longtime New Zealand cricketer of course, very
successful all round player and a guy who I suspect
is still sitting back after what happened in India going
what on earth just happened there?

Speaker 5 (05:04):
Kenzie?

Speaker 4 (05:05):
Great to have you on board. That was quite the
turn up won there? What two victories in thirty six
shots and now they haven't won yet, but what a
way to start.

Speaker 5 (05:15):
What happened?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
Yeah, Hi does? It was crazy, right?

Speaker 7 (05:20):
I mean we had a similar thing in ninety nine
actually made where there was it was that the wicket
was gluggy like really unusual. Flem won the toss and
we bowled, right. I think it was the first time
a captain had won the toss and bowled in India.

Speaker 2 (05:36):
For decades and so, and I don't remember what the
score was.

Speaker 7 (05:41):
It certainly wasn't forty six, but yeah, we sort of
managed to make inroads, but then the game sort of
peed it out, mate. I mean it's just the wicket
just died literally from the second or two and a
half days. And so the only concern now is that
New Zealand will have to put on, you know, a
significant score which they've laid the foundation four off the

(06:02):
back of some beautiful bowling in helpful conditions.

Speaker 2 (06:05):
And Robert Sharma said he got you know, he got
the toss wrong.

Speaker 4 (06:08):
I don't want to detract from what happened, but I am,
after all part of the bloody media. We can't help ourselves.
India didn't help themselves. There was some superb bowling, without
a doubt, but the Indians to would agree they gifted
some wickets, didn't they, and they'd be absolutely devastated by that.

Speaker 7 (06:25):
Well, I think, mate, it's just the modern patter, right.
I mean, you know, we we see the in a
in a bygone era. That movement is something you would
get on the first morning of a test, you know,
in quite a few in quite a few countries, and
so that that requires patience and it requires good judgment.
Leaving the ball as much of a skill as hitting

(06:47):
the six mane. So you know that's what was required yesterday.
But you know the pressure that Saudi put on, he didn't.
He was unlucky not to have picked up a few,
but it was tailor made for Henry and Will o'will
came on and he is, he is. We've got a
real up and comer there. I mean, he is going
to be a very very good test.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Foller.

Speaker 5 (07:07):
I'm not about up and come on.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
I think he's already stood up, and he's already arrived
the way and what gets me about him christ and
I think you'd appreciate this as well.

Speaker 5 (07:16):
The rage and the anger that normally surrounds fast balls
doesn't exist with a bike. He turns up bowls and
pages of delivery, some very aggressive chin and throat music,
and then he turns around and wanders back to his mark.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Again. It's quite unusual, but he does.

Speaker 7 (07:30):
He's quite he's sort of quite West Indian in his build,
his action, his style, because he's the West Indian guys
never really used to say a lot either, but they
were nasty, you know, really nasty, and and from a
bowling perspective, I mean, not from a personality perspective, and
so they would you know, they would just they would
bowl heavy, heavy balls, aggressive deliveries, put pressure on you,

(07:52):
constantly bounces so and O Rock seems to be cut
from the same cloth. So he you know, he he
just he just gets on with his bowling and does
what he does. But you know it was laid, it
was look, the foundations were. Look, there's been a lot
of talk about Tim Saudi, and you know, I thought
he bob a beautifully and he was unlucky. I mean
he beat the bat on numerous occasions and it just
wasn't quite his day. But Matt Henry wicket to wicket

(08:14):
wobbles that scene. So you know, he's got no idea
whether it's going to dip in or it's going to
nip away. Right, So if he's got no idea, when
the batsman's got absolutely no idea.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
So that's what makes him so dangerous mate in.

Speaker 7 (08:26):
Those conditions, is that you know, you just do not
know which way the wall is going to seem.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
And also, and Chris Ken joins the show, the guy's
had such an astonishing weight behind the likes of Salvi Involt.

Speaker 5 (08:39):
He makes the.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Most of every opportunity he gets without complaint and he's
done that for the last few Test matches to go, fine,
leave me on the sideline, but look at what I
can do. I think this is so well deserved for
a guy that's bited his time so much.

Speaker 7 (08:54):
No, you're right, and he's and he's you know, you
never hear anything complaints from him or mate. He just
gets in and does his work. He's super competitive as well.
You know, you see the way that he just keeps
running in. But he's he's going to be an excellent
leader of the tax of the attack. So I sort of, look,
we don't want get too far ahead of ourselves here.
We've got this test to play well. But you know,
looking forward over the summer, you sort of see Saudi

(09:14):
perhaps phasing out and he deserves the series at home,
you know, and it may well be that that time's
in with Jamison potentially coming back. So man, if you've
got Henry leading the attack with o'walke and Jamison, that's
a that's a hell of an attack. So you know,
that's exciting for New Zealand cricket fans.

Speaker 4 (09:36):
The captain see how much of our relief and a
release was that for Tim Soudy to have that hand
that over, walk away from that and give that to
Latham after the what we saw him do yesterday. Is
it too easy to say that's part of the issue
here he no longer has that weighing him down.

Speaker 7 (09:54):
No, I don't think so, mate. I just think he's
you know, what happens to all great players. And look,
Tim Saldi is a great Test cricketer. You just you know,
he's he's bowling in the low one thirties, high one
twenties whereas he used to bowl, you know, mid one thirties.
So just that, just that little reduction and pace, you know,
makes a big difference his you know, he's been unbelievably

(10:19):
resilient health wise, you know, so he deserves every bit
of credit you know, in the accolades that I'm sure
that he will receive. You know, are we talking about
the end of them? Yeah, we probably are. But you know,
the attack that's coming through now behind him is in
good hands, so you know, it may be, you know,
it may well be that we see the last of

(10:40):
Tim Sali over the summer. And as I said, he
deserves to play here.

Speaker 2 (10:44):
For the summer.

Speaker 7 (10:45):
But those guys that are coming through Matt Henry you
know the way he's producing things. You know, you've got
a good two to three years at least with that
trio throwing another young seema as well. Who's out there
and it's you know, the bowling stocks are looking very healthy.
You know, you judge it by how you go in
Australia man. And and that's a sort of attack because

(11:07):
of the height and the bounce that they'll get on
those wickets that you can actually begin to put the
Aussies under pressure.

Speaker 4 (11:12):
Christopher Kinns, you thank you very much for your time here,
expertise and your words.

Speaker 5 (11:16):
Look after yourself.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
I'm sure only the last time I pessed you throughout
the crazy, hazy days of summer.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Thanks Dars, always happy to help her.

Speaker 1 (11:23):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 3 (11:29):
Into the Chamber we go onto the Leaners, we lean
and sporting topics to kick around. Really interesting listening to
Christopher Kin's talk about cricket. I just couldn't believe it, Dars.
I was at a function last night and my phone
was off for a couple of hours. Came out and
when I went in, I think India were two down.
Came out and I saw this thing on my screen
that said they're all out for forty six.

Speaker 5 (11:50):
I couldn't believe it. I know you put it on Twitter.
It's like, where's he bean? You were absolutely stunned.

Speaker 4 (11:56):
I could almost hear your jaw dropping through the screen
when I was looking at it. I say, every dog
has its day, and I think the hammering that the
Nweseland cricket team has taken over recent times, not only
from the opposition but from the media and the fans
as well, it was almost due, wasn't it.

Speaker 5 (12:12):
It was? It was, It really was.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
You know what it did though, And I don't want
to put any negative slant on this at all, but
I just did want to say that it just put
into you know, into absolute sharp focus the complete ridiculousness
of the decision not to play Matt Henry against Sri
Lanka five point fifteen. You know, he sat watching on

(12:34):
in Sri Lanka while New Zealand just completely failed to
cause any sort of a threat with a new ball.
I mean, he must now play every Test match. He
is our number one seema by a distance.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
And I agree with Chris Kenn's He's such a lovely human.
He's never complained, There's been nothing he gets in there,
he does his job.

Speaker 5 (12:54):
He walks back to the set. You don't pick of
the two test matches.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
He's not going. But look at my results. I've been
behind south of you so long. What about Bolt Now
it's my opportunity. Head down us up, just gets on
with it. He's an absolute credit to New Zealand cricket.
And I've got to say this to Canterbury cricket as well.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
Right, Yeah, of course, of course put the red and
black colors on absolutely one eighty for three New Zealand.
So a leader of one hundred and thirty four, I
think it's a bit of rain around.

Speaker 5 (13:21):
We didn't get any plan on the first day.

Speaker 3 (13:23):
Look, I don't even really know if I can or
want to predict what's going to happen from here.

Speaker 5 (13:28):
But if we get what.

Speaker 3 (13:29):
Two hundred and two fifty ahead, we're certainly in.

Speaker 2 (13:31):
It, aren't we.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
I'd think so. And you look at the panic button
being hit. If indeed India do hit that panic button,
and as Cres pointed out, they've got a bit of
a tail and it doesn't really wag that much. So
you get a half decent lead, you apply something to
them through the magnificent skills of their three pacement. We
don't know what's going to happen. And this is the

(13:52):
lovely thing about it Test cricket, and it's craziest, piney.

Speaker 3 (13:55):
At, It's craziest. Now, speaking of crazy things in the
cricketing world, Australia and England both out of the T
twenty Women's Cricket World Cup. It feels to me, and
I'm want to get too far ahead of myself, it
feels to me as though this tournament might be opening
up for the White Ferns.

Speaker 4 (14:09):
I think it is and it has opened up, but
there's a small matter of a West Indian side to
get in the way, to be the fly in the.

Speaker 5 (14:17):
Oman coming up tomorrow morning at three o'clock.

Speaker 4 (14:20):
Here's the thing. And I hope this doesn't happen, but
I know it will, and you know it will too.
White Ferns go through, they win after what's been a
very tumultuous couple of years, and the first thing you
hear out of the mouths of people is yeah, well
Australia and England weren't there.

Speaker 5 (14:33):
It doesn't count.

Speaker 3 (14:35):
You know, I could play what you can only play
what's in front of you, Darcy.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
It's great reward.

Speaker 4 (14:41):
I think Sophie Devine coming in down the order is fantastic.
I see the emergence of some of the younger players
finally coming out from the shadow of those superstars we've got.
And this is with the bat and the ball. It
does auga well.

Speaker 3 (14:56):
I love that word.

Speaker 5 (14:57):
It does augur well.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
And I'll be up at three in the morning tomorrow
morning to see if they can beat the West Indies
and make the final against South Africa. Speaking of finals,
there are four teams looking to make the NPC final.
Give us your predictions here asking they have plenty Canterbury,
shall we just I won't answer. I'll tell you what
I won't answer. Wellington White Cuttle, You don't answer Canterbury,

(15:21):
Bay of Plenty, So I'll go first. I think Canterbury
actually will beat Bay of Plenty. I think they're coming
off a hot hand against Tasman. I've got Canterbury going
into the NPC final. What about Wellington White Cuttle.

Speaker 4 (15:33):
White Cuttle's defense last week was astonishing, it was outstanding.
I thought, for all money they were going to get
rolled by Taranaki at Wow. They stood there like think
twenty five minutes to go. Suddenly Taranaki started scoring. But
the Wacasians meant, you know you don't. I think in
Wellington situation, they have built so much around so many
key players, and when you got no lucka around right,

(15:55):
he's not playing, is he that?

Speaker 2 (15:57):
No?

Speaker 5 (15:57):
That is a distinct hole. But the form team of
the whole competition. So I'd be surprised we didn't end
up with a red and black and yellow final in
a week's time.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
I think that would be a very good outcome, a
very good outcome for those two teams, a very good
outcome for the chamber participants, and a good way to
finish our leaning on the leaners today.

Speaker 4 (16:18):
Just before we lean away. How good has this competition been?
I know we's spoken about it a few times, but
this is NPC.

Speaker 5 (16:25):
Rugby that we love.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
This is what it is all about, and it has
been i'd say by most people absolutely embraced, squeezed and
cuddled the break with the all blacks not there now
we really know where our allegiances lie.

Speaker 5 (16:38):
This is rugby.

Speaker 3 (16:40):
Preserve it at all costs. Preserve the NPC at all costs.

Speaker 1 (16:46):
