Speaker 1 (00:09):

follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It'd be today, mate, how I welcoman to Sports Fix.
My name is Darcy Walter Grave. That's Tuesday, twenty fourth
of September twenty twenty four. We're going to take a
look at some of the big sports stories of the day,
looking forward to you joining us for the duration. All
packaged up in a bite sized lump for you to
consume shortly. Sam Darry, he of course is an All
(00:43):
Black Locke, joins us to discuss the failures of the
last twenty minutes of All Black Tests. Look, he should
know he comes off the bench enough. I've also got
some opinion on Tim Sudi's Black Caps and what has
to happen now as they move forward in their desperate
attempt to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship.
(01:03):
And then we're joined by Nathan Lum he's been away
for five weeks. The News Talks b sports reporter joins
us as we talk about the big sports stories of
the day. That's our plan.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Let's get into.
Speaker 1 (01:15):
It in other news talkie talk talk talk from the
throats of the sports news that makes here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Phoenix are coming back through or to day christ Church
after eight years adrift. They're reconnecting with their southern fan base.
It's a three year deal with games at the new
stadium planned GM. David Domes sees the fine folk of
day Ponomo deserve some love.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
The South Island and christ Church in particular has been
very good to the one and to Phoenix from the past.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
We've had games down there, got.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Decent crowds the old Ami.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
Twenty thousand plus people there, so we think that the
opportunity is right to come back.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
The continuing Red Bull Formula one fias go around Daniel
Ricardo and Liam Lawson's future won't die BIS. Christian Horner
obviously loves the drama because I suppose it takes the
focus away from their horror slide the back end of
the season.
Speaker 5 (02:09):
Look, I mean, there's obviously a natural great now with
almost a month between the races. Of course, you evaluate
all scenarios. So Daniel we know his capabilities, we know
exactly what he's done. He showed again without that final.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
App and Black Caps got Tim Salvey knows what faces
his team and their run to a possible place in
the World Test Championship Final.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
We got four more in the Soy Continent before three
back at home.
Speaker 5 (02:33):
So yeah, it's a big push for us and big
shift as a Test site to come to this part
of the world and do.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Well, just win.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
So we've got to do, Tim, And all of that
was from the mouths of the men. That's sport today.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
You scavinion, it's sportsfix with Dancy Valdegreve.
Speaker 2 (02:51):
We're too now for Tim soube well. Plainly, the black
Caps skipper is not going to get dropped for the
second Test against Sri Lanka, even though he had the
covered himself from glory in the first Test. That all
went to willow Rourke who had an outstanding time of it,
steepling back mad aggression, The ability to take the ball
(03:11):
off the scene and threaten the control he had in
the air was quite extraordinary and the results well, they
spoke for themselves. So where does that leave Tim Salvey.
I'm not sure what to expect around the naming of
this side. Plainly you'd be mad to leave willow Rourke
out of the equation. Tim really didn't provide anything, but
(03:32):
would you drop the skipper and bring another Seama in
his place? Matt Henry is the unlucky character here. He
always seems to be playing second fiddle to someone. When
he gets his opportunity, he absolutely shines. I think if
Tim Salvey wasn't the skipper, it'll be a lay down
messire and Matt Henry will be in along with Willow Rourke,
(03:53):
leaving Salve to carry the drinks. But do they have
the gumption do they have the intestinal fortitude to dump
their skipper in search of a much needed victory. As
far as the World Test Championship is concerned, time is
running out to qualify for that final. Three more Test
matches after Sri Lanka in India and of course three
(04:15):
more in England. So does the result in Gaul justify
the dismissal of the captain, Well, no it doesn't. Sure
he didn't cover himself in glory. The problem with the
Black Caps was their inability to score runs when it
rarely counted Ratchamrove Indra fantastic shame he didn't notch up
(04:35):
that ton, but there were other batsmen out there. You
point the finger and say hey, it's been too long
with not enough and if we're going to win this Test,
and we're going to carry on winning tests in the Subcontinent,
we're going to have to move on with some of
these elder statesmen that haven't provided. Will it be Tim Salvey,
(04:56):
Now it's going to be Devin Conway. It's going to
feel the selection wroth come the naming of the team
before the second Test on Thursday.
Speaker 1 (05:05):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sports with Dancy Waldegrave.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
Sam Darry joins us now here on the fixed Sam,
of course, one of the young men in the All Blacks.
He is a lot. He's played five Test matches now
he's started in two he's off the bench and three. Sam,
thanks very much for joining us. Got to ask where
do you think you've improved in those five Test matches
and where do you think you really have to lift?
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, that's a great question. I think I obviously came
and being fortunate at the game time I've got so
it's been it's been awesome. I've learned heaps. I think
that I'm been pretty happy of my melody and the
stuff around the set piece. You know, very fortunate they
have great around me to help us there. But as
I say, especially coming off the bench, I think that
actuacy is probably just a bit of work for myself.
(05:52):
As I say, you know, any any little year or
whatever in those last kind of fifteen to twenty minutes
in a tight game can have nsisimflication. So you know,
we often talk about it about being kind of like
he's clean and decisive when you come off the bench,
in accurate, So that to work on for me, it'starting
to continue one I'll turn away, but you know, it's
been it's been awesome just being.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
What's the step up? Being like Sam Darry from Super Rugby?
How much of a step up is it when you've
got a black jersey on and you're playing internationals? It's
a good level Super Rugby. The next step, How great
a jump is it?
Speaker 4 (06:27):
Yeah, it's a big jump, But I feel like it
kind of it kind of happens quite actually. You know
you're obviously in for a couple of weeks training and
you kind of start to lift your level through there,
and you know you're kind of surrounded by all these
players that you're almost forced to just kind of either
lift your level or you'll probably pretty quickly yourself on
out of you know, so if they step up, you know,
(06:49):
the civicality, the speed of the game, everything happens very quickly.
And if I say there's such fine margins things you
all like better get away with, so you might drop
a ball and it might you know, you know, if
you drop at test level, the other teams pracking it
up shifting at a couple of passes are likely making it,
making the breach. So the speed, the civicality, and those
by margins are the three things that I've noticed that
(07:10):
the big steps up and kind of having to lift
to that living.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Are you settling in? Do you feel like you belong
as an all Black? I know it's only early days,
but do you feel like you've deserved to be there?
Have you the ability to speak up and contribute to
what's going on.
Speaker 4 (07:25):
Out they That's a good question, you know, obviously when
it came in, you know, it takes a while to
kind of sink in and feel real. But I think
now that I've got a couple of tests on on
my belt and seeing that, you know, I feel like
I can't compete physically. You know, you can't start to
realize that, you know, I can put a few more
things together, you know, feel like I can really start to,
(07:46):
you know, impose yourself on the game. So so now
you're right at first. It kind of does take a
while to sink in and see how you belong. But
the boys are awesome taking it under their wing and
kind of bringing you along with them and making you
feel really comfortable in the environment, and that kind of
builds your confidence and it helps you helps you see that.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
How do you deal with criticism? Because planning, when the
All Blacks lose, people do like to pile and no
one likes it. They're vested, They've got vested interests in
the team to do well, so they really feel a
part of it, and as a direct result, you're going
to wear a bit of flak. Did do you have
any ways of dealing with that? Do you avoid the
print media? Do you listen to the radio? Do you
(08:24):
suck it all in? Do you look at social media?
How do you go about dealing with that criticism and
approaching that scene.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
It's a good question, obvious see things that a lot
more heightened at this level. You know, it's still here,
but it's probably not as prevalent. I'm not I'm not
too much of one to be watching news or TV
or radio or anything obviously see with it on my tone.
But it's all part of it. You know, we we
feel it as well. Obviously you say the public doesn't
(08:54):
like us losing, but they out we hate it a
lot more than I'm sure they do. So you know,
we are very honest in this environment. You know, whenever
we have a loss, or even if we if we
get a win and we don't, don't quite play it.
But we want to where very honest and we look
at everything and we and we have some great honest
conversations and say it can be tough sometimes. But Jason
(09:15):
Ryan's got a great great quote that it for you,
not about you. So if there's anything that's you know,
criticism of yourself and your game, it's neither personal. It's
always always aimed to trying to get here and get
the team better. So as you kind of look at
it from from that approach, I think it definitely helps
dealing with that criticism.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
And finally tell us about Scott Robertson and how he's
carrying this, because if anyone's been under the pump it's
been raised. After the good times he's had with Crusaders,
things have changed somewhat. How do you see him coping
with this and developing as a coach of you even
noticed much about that.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
Sent Yeah, it's been awesome. All the coaches have been great.
Obviously to say there's been about side pressure that as
I said, there's also been a bit of pressure from ourselves.
You know that we feel like we haven't quite played
the way we want to, but we also know that
we're not far away. You know, we don't like it uses,
but we've put together us some great id But for us,
it's just about consistency and taking the opportunities and when
(10:14):
they present themselves. We feel that we're stringing to give
us some phases, creating opportunities and I said here, and
they're just not quite executing those last final ones and
really putting teams to the sword. So now the coaches things,
you know, they're constantly developing our game. We're growing our game.
That's constantly what we talk about, regardless of results. So yeah,
you know, we all we all want to be better
(10:36):
and we want to we want to turn things around,
and we're getting closer. So Hopefully this will give me
to be able to put out a performance with.
Speaker 1 (10:42):
The Chamber is now incision on Sports Fix All.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Welcome into the Chamber to Nathan Lemm after five weeks
gallivanting about Europe with no sport as well, I expect
you're quite pleased to be back into a regular routine again.
Speaker 4 (10:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (10:56):
Yeah, I'm still trying to acquire the sleep schedule again
and catch up on all the sport of must but
it's been good to get back and get into it.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
Plenty of sport around Lea's talk about you, Katkink. This
is the long running of New Zealand football, yet another one.
It's almost like it has to happen every year. Something
goes wrong. They deny everything, everybody shuts up shop, rumor continues,
thend something just it's it's a circus, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
It never it never stops.
Speaker 6 (11:23):
And I think what makes it worse is what you
just said, Sie, is that they shut up shop and
no one's talking. We've you know, news talks here be today.
Bonnie Jans has been doing an outstanding job. She had
the story in the Herald and she can't get anyone
to talk. NZDF is Center us a statement, but they
won't put Andrew Pragnell up.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
You know, a sport in New Zealand. No one's talking
and it just makes it more.
Speaker 6 (11:45):
Suspicious in a way, like if someone comes out and says, Okay,
this is the situation, this is what we're doing about it.
These are the next time the flames don't yeah, exactly exactly.
You make it a bit more, you make the process transparent.
But as soon as you start going on, no, we're
not going to talk, we're not going to say anything,
then the question is, well, why aren't you saying anything?
Speaker 2 (12:03):
But there's lots of people to say things. Is clink
of it to say something? There's the player concerned to
say something and New Zealand football, but everybody's been quiet.
Speaker 6 (12:12):
Well, and we should point out that the players have
come out. They just don't want their names to be out.
But then again that shows that they don't have faith
in New Zealand Football to protect them and have their
backs effectively, which I think is the problem. So you've
got this almost it's almost like a civil war situation
with the players are coming out, you know, against the
governing body effectively and against the coach and the governing
(12:34):
body doesn't want to say anything about it at this point,
So yeah, I think it just is not making it
any better, the fact that they're not front footing it
and they're trying to shy away from it.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
It's like a Mexican standoff. Someone's just waiting to shoot.
They loosening to behold on the bodies all over the prairie.
Let's move duly, not another subject. Look, no, Jordy Barrett.
It looks like he's out for possibly four maybe six. Look,
we don't know. He's out for quite some time. Suddenly
a wellingson at his home in Abretislo.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Cart match where.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
New Zealand have to show a little more and they've
shown for the last five Test matches they haven't got
one of the better players so far of the series available.
So what happens.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Yeah, it's a bit of blow, isn't it.
Speaker 6 (13:15):
Fingers crossed he will be back for the Northern Tour
that Test against England on the third of November. Yeah,
I think the All Blacks will lose a lot, especially
also in terms of Jordy Barrat's got quite a good
kicking game, so good kicking down they'll lose something there,
especially with Damian McKenzie still sort of trying to find
his feet in the first five jumper there. But yeah,
I mean for me, I think you will probably see
(13:37):
Antholin Lenet Brown come into that twelve jumper. Obviously Billy
Proctors there as well, so he's an option. Obviously would
be playing in front of his home fans as well.
So I think either of those options will be solid,
neither of them as good as Jordi Barrett. But I
don't think it'll be too much of a reshuffle. I
think it's just a straight swap situation.
Speaker 2 (13:55):
Yeah, I think that possibly with the gravity of the
Test match, we've got a Senro and Rique Joanni, they
probably want to leave him there. So it's a second
five eight special. So if Proctor comes in, is it
worth moving Rico Yuanni out? Putting Proctor in there and
having Anton Lennet Brown on the inside, it all becomes
(14:16):
very complex, and I think you've got to have some
form of consistency, don't you. Although you will be tempted
to still believe Proctor on the bench, this is going
to have a kicking wage in his own own own ground, right.
Speaker 6 (14:27):
Yeah, you'd love to see it now I can't see
them moving. Rico, you're wonning out of the thirteen jumper.
I think he's pretty much got that locked up and
I don't think Rays will want too many reshuffles, especially
in that back line.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
But yeah, well you don't want to confuse Damien mckennie anymore,
do you, because he's already That's another story for another day.
Worry about that later. And the Cricket World Test Championship
hopes are slipping through the fingers of the Black set.
Always always difficult for Black Caps, though a couple of
Test matches in Sri Lanka, three in India and then
three back here in england Shire probably got the job done.
(15:01):
Should have, would have, could have maybe not. It's difficult
to win. And Gaul, do you make any changes coming
up for the second Test?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
Um? One thing?
Speaker 6 (15:08):
You need wholesale changes. I mean, you know you talk
about that. That picture was so difficult to bat on.
If you watch those last few overs with ratcham reve injury,
ahs Bettel we're dealing with. I wouldn't want to be
in that situation. It was so so difficult. But they
did build partnerships in that first innings, just didn't manage
to win the second inning, so I think the toss
will come into it a lot. Mitch Santner, I think,
(15:31):
is a player who needs to step up. I think
he had four runs one wicket across the entire Test match,
so he's someone who really needs to stand up.
Speaker 3 (15:38):
Believe he can.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
He's got more than enough experience and obviously the pictures
will favor him, but they are not getting enough out
of him at the moment. Obviously, Devin Knway is still struggling,
but I think that they should should stick with him.
I think they should persevere. I know some people are
calling for changes, but I'd like to see Devin Conway
remain at the top of the order.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
I still have faith in him.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
Well, that threat of being dropped, will that work or
that put a spark up? Some of them will freak
them out. This is not what the black Caps do.
Devon hasn't been good. He knows that we know that.
Will they sacrifice? And I suppose we'll find out later
in the bit You're not the black Cats will do.
They'll make no changes at all.
Speaker 3 (16:13):
Yeah, well, you mentioned the thread of being dropped.
Speaker 6 (16:15):
I think maybe that works in sports more like like rugby,
where you can just throw yourself entirely into it, if it,
if it effort, whereas in cricket it's so fickle. It's
every decision accounts, and I think maybe that'll play on
the mind of a player when they're out there at
the crease and they need to be there for hours.
Speaker 3 (16:30):
I can't see that doing him any favors.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
