Here we go again. Welcome into Sports Fix, your daily
dose of all things good and bad and sportsman. Name's
Darcy Waltergrave and coming up in the addition today, joined
by Steve Price, of course, former Warriors skipper, former Kangaroo,
former Queensland origin rep. As we take a look at
tonight's matchup State against State, made against make the list
(00:43):
goes on and on. We'll talk about the possibility the
likelihood of New South Wales squaring the series up, and
I tell you right now Steve says, yeah, no, it's
not going to happen. We'll talk surfing because there's a
positive infrastructure story and Auckland I'll give you my opinion
on what's going on and the surf park up in
Dairy Flatt. And Bunny Jansen, she works as a journalist
(01:06):
for News Talk ZB and The New Zealand Herald, joined
us in the chamber as we take a look at
some of the biggest sports stories of the day that'lloo
Are you ready buckle up? Here we go again.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
In other news, Tom had had a listener and an
evenstrop to who said what and where in the wide
world of sport. Addie Savia ab vice captain arguably the
best player on the planet, spoke today at the All
Black season launch. He provides some encouragement to the blokes
and missed out on the Black jersey this time around.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
I'm sure those guys will bounce back and red hard
and do what they can to play well and whatever
games they come.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
But it's a really tough team to make and it's.
Speaker 5 (01:47):
Obviously a big congratulations to the new guy.
Speaker 6 (01:50):
That's a blessing to be in this team and we provileged.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
And the manager Gareth Southgate, fresh from having beer cups
thrown in his general direction during Monte piping after his
team stumbled into the Euro Round of sixteen, he's spoken
about the attitude of his team under pressure. They've come
into it in the back of a really challenging environment.
Speaker 6 (02:10):
It's sort of taken me back.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
A little bit too days when I was playing with
England and they've covied it exceptionally well. And pugilist Alexander Ussick,
conqueror of Tyson Fury and undisputed heavyweight Champion of the
World has relinquished as IBF strapped.
Speaker 1 (02:28):
And Daniel and Daniel listen, I know I be title
important to you. Tell it my present to you ONNT
and Denver.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
To any one, it's du Bois up against Joshua. That's
his present and it's okay for Usick. He's still got
three belts, WBC, WBO and w B A. Here are
the voices make the news in Sport Today News.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
It's Sports Fix with Dancie Valdegreve.
Speaker 2 (02:56):
That it's warm, welcome to the program to Steve Price,
former Warriors skipper. Big night to night, Huge night tonight.
It can be sealed my friends, sealed before going back
home again.
Speaker 6 (03:07):
Absolutely, mate, huge game in an iconic stadium.
Speaker 5 (03:10):
Mcg so, I think it's probably a little bit more
favorite towards Queensland because either most of Victoria lives in
Queensland or they support Queensland.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
So crowd means that much, even though it's a so
called neutral venue.
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Well there's ninety five thousand there, mate, so you know,
if the majority are going for one team, I reckon
that's going to be a pretty good, you know, a
pretty good extra man. I reckon a bit of pressure
on the referees. Most of them probably wouldn't know what
the rules are, but hopefully most of them will and
they'll be able to get behind the mighty Queenslanders.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
What you're talking about the referees or the fans.
Speaker 5 (03:45):
No, the referees, of course they know the rules, mate, absolutely, it's.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Going to say that was pretty brave for you. Where's
the winning and the losing of the gamed? You thing
just rolling it back to what happened last time around,
is we think you can pull out of that game, Steve,
that you think might make the difference for you the team.
Speaker 5 (04:01):
Yeah, other than to play against sent off, I think
it's going to be key with fuel position. So you know,
whoever going to be able to be in the attacking
field position more than coming out of trouble field position
is certainly going to be a better chance of scoring
tries which and puts the other team under precedent to
try and defend right, So not making errors, not given
(04:21):
penalties away, making it really difficult for your opposition all.
Speaker 6 (04:25):
Night is going to be the key.
Speaker 5 (04:26):
And New South Wales I picked the team that's quite
a large, quite a big team and looks like they're
going to try and bully us, So you know they're
going to hope that they're going to be in good
ball sort of position more than what they are coming
out of trouble, and hopefully we've got obviously the speed
and fever the skill there, so if we can be
in attacking positions, hopefully that's going to really cause problems
(04:48):
for the for the Blues all night.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Rees Walsh obviously targeted last time around, hardly idea. I
do believe he was targeted, and what's likely to happen
this time around, they're going to carry on aiming aiming
at him.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
Yeah, I don't know if he was targeted.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
Maias just run on the foot and Blake come in
and made a tackle and it just went wrong.
Speaker 6 (05:06):
So I didn't think he was targeted.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
You know, there was a talk before the game that
they're going to targeting, but that's not why I got
knocked out. My biggest thing for a Reese a little
bit of a question mark is he hasn't played since
that game. Hopefully he's just going to be Reese Walsh
and he's not going to be a big gun shot
because you know, I was a pretty big shot and
it's a physical game in state of origin. I'm sure
in your South Wales is going to let him know.
(05:28):
He won't forget where he's playing in state of origin.
So yeah, if we can sort of be like I
was saying before, in that good field position, he's going
to be running out of you know, sort of a
round half way rather than trying to catch bombs on
his tryline or you know, getting whacked really hard as
he catches it. So the better position we can be,
the better it's going to help Reese and hopefully Reese
(05:49):
is going to get a plenty of opportunities with the
footy and his speed.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
But is he likely to be gun shy from what
you know of them or just chuck himself in regardless?
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Yeah, I don't know him real well, but the way
I see him play footy, I would say that he's
not really gun shy.
Speaker 6 (06:04):
He's got a lot more carriage in what I had
as a ball player.
Speaker 5 (06:07):
Anyway, he has a crack mate whether he thinks it's
going to work or not, and backs himself. So that's
why he's the player he is, and that's why we're
very happy.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
He's our number one Steve Price joins the program. A
few changes with the Blues. Kind of understand that as well.
After that start that Madge mcguirehead as a tenure's new
South Wales coach, so he's rung the changes in. I
suppose the big ones La Chrell Mitchell, this guy we
never quite know what he's going to turn up with.
How do you rate what he's going to do this
time around?
Speaker 5 (06:36):
Yeah, but you know, so he's been out of an
origin scene for a couple of years now and fantastic
player or you know, awesome player, but if we can
have the ball more than what they do. He's not
a real fan of defending. You'd rather run the footy.
His effort on effort probably isn't as good as what
you know it could be. Particularly he's been playing fullback
for the last three years, so he's not used to
(06:58):
being in that front line defense, having to make twenty
thirty forty tackles a game, you know, having to make
decisions defensively. He's been protected a little bit at South
because he's been at fullback. He was one of the
best centers in the game when he was playing center,
but he hasn't played for probably three years, so it's
going to be new for him, but I'm.
Speaker 6 (07:14):
Sure he's prepared really well. And the other.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
Positions that were all the changes that were made. Mate,
most of those guys that had come in were their
first choice anyway, and they were other injured or didn't
have enough game time under their belt, so you know,
Moses was probably going to be chosen over Nico and
then mckinnis got the start because Cam Murray was injured,
so the trail comes in for the suspended SUALI. So
(07:40):
I wouldn't say that, you know, they've gone and wheeled
the acts. It's been more that's their team. They were
going to choose to start with if they could have,
but those players were injured.
Speaker 6 (07:49):
Now they're available.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
Not to admire though about New South Wales after basically
being absolutely hawked at the start when Sally got seent off.
They showed a bit of a bit of heart, didn't they,
which is what you'd expect, but just they can't do that.
Twelve against thirty never works, not more not in Lea.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
And you know they did show plenty of heart, but
at the end of the day, you know, we've got
to be good enough to take the opportunities and we're
able to do that in a period. They then have
made some changes which we found a little bit more
difficult and it made it a real struggle and particularly
getting out of their trouble and that type of thing.
So you know, then we're able to identify that and
then we've got a couple of tries late. So I
(08:31):
was really happy with how Queensline did.
Speaker 6 (08:32):
What they did. New South Whale was absolutely brave.
Speaker 5 (08:37):
You know, their fans certainly wouldn't have been disappointed with
what they put out on the field. And that's what
state of origins about.
Speaker 6 (08:43):
Mate.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
You don't give up just because you've got twelve men
and they've got thirteen. You know, there's been plenty of
times when teams are won in that situation. Just sort
of seventy three minutes of it makes it a little bit.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Hard dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sports Fix with Darcy
Walter Grave.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
Finally a good new story around sporting infrastructure in Auckland City.
Posed Surf Park in Auckland is getting closer. The Ministry
for the Environment has granted resource consent for the project.
For those who don't know, it's looking to go ahead
just north of Auckland in a place called Dairy Flat.
(09:23):
It's a wave park. It's a wave park which is
a dream for all surfers who can't deal with a
terrible weather, be irrational and irregular waves and see sharks
like that last bits of it a joke. Surfers don't
care about sharks. But this is an outstanding one hundred
million dollar exercise that is not being funded by the government.
(09:44):
It's not being funded by the council. It is private
investors who thought it would be a really good idea
to put a state of the art wavepark just north
of Auckland to cater to the huge amounts of humans
and not only want to surf any time, but for
the learners out there who fancy having a crack. The
best thing about this park is it's heated. That's right, heated.
(10:07):
Maybe there's a spring suit in the middle of winter
to go out there and surf. It's based on the
highly successful surf park over in Melbourne. It'll come with
our farm to table, restaurant, accommodation and of course high
performance facilities. The Auckland Surf Pipe project expected to create
four hundred jobs during construction and then one hundred and
(10:30):
twenty full time jobs once it arrives late twenty five
early twenty twenty six. It's this huge news for the community.
It is fantastic news for Auckland and it does show
it is actually possible in Auckland to cut through red
tape and get something done in the way of sporting facilities. Congratulations.
Speaker 6 (10:51):
The Chamber is.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
Now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
Now it's been hello to Bonnie Janssen from Newstalk ZB
and the New Zealand Herald as we have a wander
into the Chamber. Start things off, Bonnie with state of Origin.
Something you buy into, something you're keen on. We love it.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Maybe it's because it's the best type of league there is.
It's the pinnacle event.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
So who do you support when you go into this.
Do you pick a side on a coin toss? You've
got a historical side or.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
I guess I've always supported the Maroons just because my
family have supported them and they live over that part
of Australia. But they had a pretty good win as
well first time around.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
Well they're looking to go wipe them all out, aren't
They then go back to Queensland too, I know, which
is reasonably likely when you look at this game and
you look at the likes of Latrell Mitchell are coming
back playing a position he's been hiding out the back
and full back, hasn't he so in the center's role.
Is that a weak spot? Do you think another one
for New South Wales?
Speaker 4 (11:48):
Yeah, it definitely is. I've had like a bunch of
changes coming into this. Obviously Michael McGuire didn't have his
best start in the New South Wales jersey. But yet
there's a lot of changes that New South Wales are
going to have to deal with. And the Maroons can
just go out. They haven't made too many changes, so
they can just go and do their thing.
Speaker 2 (12:05):
Is it kind of a bit underwhelming or a bit
nasty to say, let's hope old mate at fallback gets
wiped off? The Parker set fair for Reese Walsh because
of course he's supposed to be frouning up for the
Broncos come Saturday night up against the Warriors. We can't
wish elon, can we.
Speaker 4 (12:20):
I mean we can't, but we can because I mean,
that's that's the other thing, Darcy, That's why we're so
excited for this game tonight. As Kiwis because the game
we watched on Saturday just was It wasn't a game
of league, was it. So yeah, I would like to
see it a little hurt to Reese Weld.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
It's pretty rare though that we've got Warriors involved in this.
There are couple Kirk kate well is involved, he's on
the bench. Is it an eighteenth men there as well
in Mitch Barnett. But I suppose that adds a bit
of interest. Yeah, it does it or not?
Speaker 4 (12:45):
Definitely. I mean it would have been nice to see
them have a little bit more involvement on the field.
But yeah, good to see them nonetheless, And I don't
think that changes how much Kiwis love watching Statia way with.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Your fan group, with your friend group, with your fan group.
Yeah they are your fans, aren't they do? They have
a biton to this as well from the people you
know and hang out and watch sport with.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (13:06):
Well, we were planning on having a one and cheese
night and staying up, staying up for the state of
origin and that was the plan. So I'm really looking
forward to that. That's the only downside though with it,
Darcy is the late kickoff ten o'clock. Not ideal, but
that's what they're kind of contending with, right if they're
going to host it in Auckland next year, is how
do they find it sooner?
Speaker 2 (13:27):
It's never going to happen up, honestate competition that not
ours overnight White Ferns are playing and they're up against England.
What one, T two, four, five, six, eight games. That's epic.
Speaker 4 (13:37):
Yeah, ODI series first before the T twenty they had,
you know, another version of this back in March and
April here in New Zealand England. New Zealand lost both series. Rather,
so they're going to secret emption really.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
Many changes to the side. Have you got any people
who have dropped down and you want it's still there
hanging on for their life to a Jersey? Yeah, I
guess so.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
It's it's definitely a building phase for the Ferns. There's
a lot of young ones coming through.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
When you say a building phase, do you say you
expect them to get b that's what you're saying, right, Well, No,
I don't.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
I don't think so. I mean I feel like we've
got cricket in New Zealand just isn't isn't working right now?
What like you you probably agree this World T twenty
Men's World Cup. We've just had absolute blowout that the
Ferns haven't been great since they hosted that World Cup
here a few years ago. So yeah, it is a
rebuilding phase and I mean yeah by all means, I'd
(14:32):
love to see them guard and get some results in England.
I think they are absolutely capable of it, but it's
just with their tune up on the day.
Speaker 2 (14:38):
But Bonnie, England right up there, well, it must be
right near the top of the world here.
Speaker 4 (14:42):
Yes, yeah, England number two in the world behind Australia.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Not Australia again, at least you know they're not in
the T twenty World Off with Alexander Usik. He's relinquished
one of his four straps. Not bad going for an
ex cruiserweight to beat up on Tyson Fury. He's got four,
but he said, you know what, I'll throw my IBF
belt right back into the ring again. It looks like
it's going to be Dubois up a against Anthony Joshua.
(15:10):
He's probably more than a name than anyone else, isn't
he Joshua?
Speaker 4 (15:14):
Yeah, I think it's probably for Anthony Joshua best case
scenario because he's lost to Usik right a few times,
so he's probably stoked that he's, you know, maybe got
more of a chance to win this belt. But it's
a real shame to see Usic give it up or
whatever you like to call it. I mean it was
probably expected.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Well, he has to, doesn't He can't defend them all
because I think Dan, you do buy a second on line,
he won't defend it against him because the return you'd
hope against Fury, So he kind of has to separate
it out, doesn't he. Yeah, yeah, he has to do.
Speaker 4 (15:44):
But I guess it is a shame because he was
the first undisputed champion in what two decades, so it
would have been cool to see him keep going there,
but the first one in not in Saudi Arabia for
the first time.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
It's any a matter of time before the Saudis go
forget about the WBO, the WBC, the WBA and the
ib IF. It's now just going to become the Saudi
Strap and there's going to be one champion of the
World of Control, not unlike what happens in UFC. Yeah, yeah,
you don't have to like it, Bonni. It's just an
even ability. I think, well, it's about the golden rule.
Who's got the gold makes the rules here? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Speaker 4 (16:19):
But Wembley obviously sparks my interest being a footy stadium,
so I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker 2 (16:24):
You've got to remove yourself from that. There are other sports, okay,
there are other sports. Hate and real fast. Then on
that football, what happens with the All Whites. They've got
their semi final coming up against Tahiti.
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Yeah, they're playing Tahiti tomorrow and Banuatu ofc Nations Cup.
It's a semi final. The kind of cruise through this
tournament as they always do. There's always the question around
was this good use of their time or not? The
conditions aren't great over there, the facilities. I spoke with
Alex ruth for yesterday, the Wellington Phoenix skipper or White midfielder.
He said, you know, it's a good opportunity for us
(16:56):
to adapt and be humbled a little bit. But if
he had the chance, or if it was put to
him whether he would rather play the World Champions, he
said he absolutely would.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
And on that, Bonnie out of the chamber, you go,
thanks for your telling.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
