News Talks at b HI and welcome on in to
the Sports Fixed podcast. Mynam is Darcy water Rabit is Tuesday,
the third of December twenty twenty four and no, I
will not and cannot justify any Christmas carols yet. Coming
up in today's podcast, you're home of all the sporting
news and interviews who really need to know. On a
(00:40):
bite sized chunk, I'm going to chat with Chris Ken's
former New Zealand All Rounder about what went on in
christ Church and what is going to go on in Wellington.
That comes up shortly. I've got some opinion around the
A League and what's happened before Christmas with the scheduling
of the season. It has been fantastic. And joining us
(01:02):
in the chamber to talk a bit of Formula one
and cricket selection is Alex Powell, a digital sport editor
for the New Zealand Herald. That's what we're getting up
to and we're going to do that right here right
now on the Fix. In other news, Bett take it
quick listen now it's some of the sports news makers.
(01:23):
A bit of cricket, but a football and a bit
of rugby as well. Black Caps bowler Mitch Santner claims
conditions are yet to determine whether he gets a spot
in the eleven four Test two against England at the
Basin Reserve starting Friday. The spinning all Round has joined
the squad in place of placement Jacob Duffy, with last
year's pitch for the Test and Wellington against Australia providing turn.
(01:46):
Getting put up for media generally indicates you're playing, and
Satan has been asked by Jason Pine if that's the case.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
No, look at the pitch looks pretty greend to me,
but I love that shameworn.
Speaker 2 (02:01):
Now, obviously we're waiting to see a few days out.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Looks pre green at the moment.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
HAWKLANDFC are making an effort to garner as much support
possible for the second round of New Zealand's A League
derby against the Wellington Phoenix on Saturday. Tickets for Mount
Smart's twenty five thousand seat capacity have sold out, with
the North Bank opening up for an extra one thousand
tickets for families AUKLANDFC boss Nick Becker explains the reason
(02:27):
behind the move.
Speaker 5 (02:29):
We spoke to this stadium over the week's end and
they were really supportive of opening up that grassy bank
at the north end. We're going to just sell family
tickets there because it's obviously it's right above our family
fan zone. Flying out the door like hotcakes.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
At the moment, Jordy Barrett is settling into a different
rugby life. The All Blacks second five eighth is on
sabbatical with the Irish club Leinster, linking up last week
after the end of year tour with the All.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Blacks and the Royal Treatmen.
Speaker 6 (02:54):
Got picked up at the airport via Tiger Furlong and
so it's great to be welcomed by someone like that,
and it's yes, it's nice to be able to rub
shoulders with a lot of boys.
Speaker 7 (03:06):
This week.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Leading of X We've got just the ticket. It's Sports
Vix News Talks is.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
How were joined now by Chris Kans as we take
a look at the vagaries of the game of cricket.
Good day to you, Chris, I trust your well.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
That's good to chat as always.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
And great to have you back on of course you
would have been keenly enjoying what was going on in
christ Church as far as a Test cricket match is concerned,
but not the result and not what happened there. Considering
what happened in India, there was a right heat scratch
of christ Church, wasn't it.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
Yeah? And look, I kind of agree with what Tom
Lathan said at the end of it.
Speaker 7 (03:45):
May they don't need to go into sort of a
microscopic analysis of what happened, like taking catches the game.
The game is completely different and then made off the
back of what occurred in India, which is quite simply,
I think it's the greatest Test victory series victory in
the history of the game. I'm going to be fascinated
(04:05):
to see what happens at the Hallbergs off the back
of what that Mean's team did in India. But bringing
it back to now, it was an aberration. That's not
a normal New Zealand fielding unit and so you're right,
it's a head scratcher.
Speaker 2 (04:18):
It's been sluggish though in the field. I think when
rich And kicked it all off and it carried on
right the way through, we're a very sharp fielding in it.
It was something we could control envy of the world,
and then the last year or so it's kind of
buttoned off all wee. But can you put your finger
on why maybe the standards aren't as high or the
executions the point it's not as high as it has
(04:38):
been previously.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (04:41):
I'm not even sure that that's the case. I think,
you know, when when you drop eight catch.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
I got it.
Speaker 7 (04:46):
I wouldn't even know when New Zealand testing would have
dropped date catches and never and you know the fact
that that many and then Brooke was dropped five times.
I mean he just kept teen off and teen off
and teen off, and so for them to have done that,
you know, yeah, but it's just it was such it
was a really funny one for me, just that the field,
(05:08):
because I thought it was a good toss to lose.
And the reason I say that is that when you
when you bowl or bat in a northwest in christ Church,
you know it looks green, you choose to bowl, it
doesn't often do as much as what you think. So
New Zealand was well and truly in the hunt made
and Hadding seventy for four in the first dig. And
(05:29):
if they had have taken catches. We could well be
talking a different story and anomaly.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
We'll leave it at that. Let's go to the test
coming up and one like look Hagley oval. In fact,
we are blessed with beautiful ovals here in New Zealand.
It's so good from the concrete jungle days actually having
ovals and you can't really go past what will be
the magnificence of a puhuta kawa studded basein reserve. The
discussion now, Chris Kens, is around what do we do
(05:56):
with the team. It's interesting because it will take spin
mitt Santna has now been hauled in that means one
of four seamans will likely go. Most people think Smith,
the new guy, will go. There's a thought that it
may be South. How do you make that decision?
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 7 (06:13):
Look, I thought Gary Stead got it wrong, and he
doesn't often get it wrong. I thought he got it
wrong by not playing Will Young and christ Church more
so made off the bat that he had earned his
place in the side off his performance in the three
Tests in India, and so for the player of the
series to then come back to christ Church and be
(06:34):
dropped from the side, I just I just don't know
internally the dynamic or how the team sort of feels
about that, and the fact that I, like I said, mate,
I thought he earned his place. So whether Conway made
way or you didn't play the extra Seema and Smith
and you kept a longer batting lineup, But for Young
to be left out, I think just it sort of
just sent the wrong message about who New Zealand was
(06:57):
and may will Young earned his place, right, That's what
That's what I felt. But look, didn't play lost the test.
Now they've come to Wellington. As you say, there's talk
of Saudi missing out, but he can't, you know, I
he deserves to play the next next two tests regardless.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
I mean, you know, it's a and that's just the
way it is.
Speaker 7 (07:15):
And I and that's you know, and I've been a
bit sentimental probably, yeah, But for someone to have given
as much service and done as much as he's done,
he deserves, he deserves his final two tests. So so
he's a given, right, He's a lock. Henry's a lock.
A Rock is gonna He's going.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
To be a superstar. There's no two ways about it.
He's going to be a superstar.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
So so for me, Smith makes way for Santanna, but
the issue becomes, uh, you know, do you persevere with
an out of form Conway? And so these are the
decisions that Gary said, will have to sort of look
at And do you look at a tired Tom Blundle?
He does look tired with his footwork behind the stumps made.
He's falling over at the crease when he's batting, he's
(07:57):
moving across his stumps, so he's not looking as sharp
as as what he has done in the past.
Speaker 3 (08:02):
So do you put him at seven? And Phillip's the sixth?
Speaker 7 (08:04):
So so I think there's going to be some tweaks
with what the unit is.
Speaker 3 (08:10):
But can they win absolutely? Can they win the series
two one? Absolutely? So they're not done and dusted by
any stretch of the imagination.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
And you would like to see how they retain his
place too, And I want to expand on that. You
say he deserves it because of his career, How long
does that last?
Speaker 3 (08:30):
For?
Speaker 2 (08:31):
How long do you give a guy that rope he's
only got two tests to go? Is it fado complete?
Is that necessarily the right way to go? Look, he
hasn't played poorly. I'm not saying he has, but this
whole concept of you've been never so long, we're going
to let you bow it on your terms.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
How comfortable with that? Yeah, it's good.
Speaker 7 (08:49):
It's a good point and so and look it's a
Test match, right, so we're not So I'm being mindful
of just saying, you know, he's he's in there regardless
what I do think it's a bit of a tweak actually,
so as much as we're talking about Phillips and Blundle
swapping around, because I thought over the last year that
should have been the scenario anyway. I thought that Philip
should have been a sexual batting above Blundle with his
(09:12):
keeping role and then the batting sort of side of it.
Speaker 3 (09:14):
I would I would have a consideration towards O'Rourke and.
Speaker 7 (09:22):
Matt Henry taking the new ball together because I do
think that now with Tim Soudy just dropping off a
bit of power, do I think he's the best third
seema in the country.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Yes, I do so, he's in the top three seemas.
But what we could do Darce.
Speaker 7 (09:36):
And I think that this is potentially logical as well,
is that a rock bowls downwind in Wellington, because like
I said, him.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
With the new ball, he is going to be a
real handful.
Speaker 7 (09:46):
And then and then Matt Henry comes up into the
wind because in Wellington you have to have that into
wind bowler, so Matt Henry can come up into it
and then he can come back and follow a walk
after that or vice versa a rock bowls three and
then follows up after Henry. But Tim Soudy's gonna have
to do some hard yards into the wind and he's
done that before, so that's that into the wind bowler
is really really important or seema in Wellington. So and
(10:08):
then going I think Hamilton is the last test. You
know again if that if that dynamic is the best
dynamic with O'Rourke and Henry opening, because that's the most
penetration that we'll get, well, then we do that. And
then having Tim saudis as first change that there's no
better first change bowler in New Zealands.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
Even if you take him out.
Speaker 7 (10:26):
Of opening us, he's still he's still there and capable
of performing the role.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
So yes, he retains this position.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
And on that, mister Christopher Kims, we thank you very
much for your time, your expertise and your input. As
always after yourself, have a great weekend. I know, execut
what you'll do it on Friday. Have fun.
Speaker 1 (10:45):
This is Sportsfix, your daily does of sports news powered
by News talks Be.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
It's all about timing and results. You've got to applaud
the A League for the way they have structured this
year's season. Two huge derby matches between the newcomers Auckland
DFC and the old school in the Wellington Phoenix have
been before for the Christmas break. This has set a
huge fire underneath the A League here in New Zealand.
(11:14):
We couldn't have asked for anything more when it comes
to the tense rivalry between the Wellington team and the
Auckland team. So the timing has been fantastic. Of course,
the results no one can predict them, and I don't
think anybody could predict the start of the season that
Auckland FC have had. I think the environment has changed
somewhat in football here in New Zealand, especially in Auckland
(11:38):
of recent times when you take into account the Football
Kings the Football Knights two absolute disastrous forays into the
A League. They did not work, so there were serious
doubts about whether any traction will be gained by an
Auckland based football team. But we've seen in recent times
the popularity of football has exploded, well, if not exploded slowly,
(12:00):
but surely crawled on the up and up. There is
a willing and waiting crowd here to engage in football,
and Auckland City and the results they have had, that
crowd is only more than keen to climb on board
even more as the Breakers used to say, we've got
a massive bandwagon. There's always room for more people and
(12:21):
that will carry on accelerating after this weekend's match, when
the Wellington Phoenix come up to take on Auckland FC
looking for revenge after the first derby when Auckland embarrassed
them at home. Of course, you add to the fact
that it's getting a little niggli around an extra one
thousand seats being put in place just so they can
(12:42):
beat the A League record held by Wellington. I like
the needle. I like the negle. I like the way
these two teams are going at each other, but more importantly,
I love the success that both of these teams have
been having. More's the point, what happens if these two
teams would meet in a knockout final semi final later
on and the piece. Is it worth taking it to
(13:05):
Eden Park because I'd say you'd fill it to the Gunnals.
Speaker 1 (13:09):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
And it's a warm embrace to Alex Powell, digital sport
editor of the New Zealand Herald, as we climb into
the chamber and talk about a couple of sporting stories
and of course, being a petrol head, Alex Powell, you'll
be all over what's going on with Liam Lawson or
Yuki Sonoda or Cusio check O Pearis or whoever else
is in the line to take his job. The story
(13:35):
gets better and better, no sign of stopping just yet.
What's the skinny mate?
Speaker 4 (13:40):
Basically, if reports it to be believed, red Bull have
decided enough is enough, They're not going to continue with Sergio.
Speaker 2 (13:46):
And these reports are been going on for ages, but
this is.
Speaker 4 (13:49):
The most concrete one yet now that there is definite
consequences on Peris's consistent failure over the course of the season.
So basically the reports are saying Red Bull have said, Noah,
enough with Periers. You've cost us too much and the
money then our third in the constructors chamanship. That's eight
figures of money they've lost. But basically what it means
is Liam laws and would be in theory the front
(14:10):
runner to replace them.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
How much does it cost to get rid of a
guy like Checko, because he's talking about eight figures where
that's cost them already, what is it going to cost
them to remove him?
Speaker 4 (14:19):
Well, so the figure that's put out there, and again
this is only reported, This has yet to be confirmed
by Paeris or Red Bull, but twenty million US dollars
is what's been put forward because the only resigned earlier
this year, remember, on a fresh one year contract with
the option of a second year if red will want it,
and it turns out they don't want either.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
And I would understand that it has been underwhelming when
you look at the stats coming out around a world
champion and the disparity between him and his teammate, I
think this is unheard of that the differential. Isn't it
going to come up to three hundred points possibly.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
Depending on how results going Abu Dhabi this weekend? YEP,
that's very much on the table. We need Maxis happened
to win that in pairs to not score points at all, which,
as we've seen possible, is very possible, But you're right
in terms of a shared number. Remember that there are
so many more races and so many more points available
in there were like there have been drivers he finished
with one hundred percent more like they'll finish with points
and the teammate gets none. And when a title, you know,
(15:11):
but three hundred points there's too many. Considering Red Bull
won't win the constructors Championship now it's only going to
be McLaren or Ferrari.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
But do it.
Speaker 4 (15:18):
And I think that's really rare because obviously the driver's
Championship great, you get all the glory, but the teams
Championship is where you make your money.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
That's the one they want. That's the one race Sunday
sell Monday. That's how it rolls. Funny when you're talking
about the lead driving the number one and the number
two is back in the day, if the lead driver's
car broke, he just hop out and number two would
have to pull up and park and he'd climbing that
and drive off again. It's changed quite a lot since
the fifties.
Speaker 4 (15:42):
Well, no Williams did that earlier this year. Remember when
when Alex Alibon rider his car off in Melbourne they
gave him Logan Sarte.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Yeah, but not halfway through the race. But there you go.
So that means hopefully Liam Lawson, Liam and Yuki. The
big thing with Yuki, of course, is he's only got
a year to go and he's heading off to Aston Martin.
Speaker 4 (16:00):
Well it's theorists still go to Aston Martin because of
his link to Honda, who will leave Red Bull to
go to Aston Martin in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
So why would read Ball give him a ride for
another year at the top level when he's going to
depart to a team that flogged or the engine and
the designer Adrian Newi.
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Yeah, it's all pointing the right way.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
For Kiwis, which should scare us, shouldn't I'm.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
A bit scared. Yeah, because it gets real next year then.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
And if he does get that seat, and we hope
because we don't know how long that may or may
not take. If you've seen enough Alex this year to
suggest that he will do better than Paris, because that's
what he's got to do. He's got to play rear
gunner to Max Fishtupen in.
Speaker 4 (16:42):
Terms of results, you probably say no, like Liam's done
the best with what he has available, but I think
even he would say he needed to have done well.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
He's keep it on the track though he hasn't plowed
it into anyone or a wall. That's key is that's
why color Pendo's.
Speaker 4 (16:53):
Not involved exactly. However, I know from talking to people
close to it that Red Bull do regard Limb very highly.
They've always seen him as a potential partner for Max
and they're just having to hit fast forward on it.
Speaker 2 (17:05):
Fantastic news. Let's move to another big sport, Zeland. Of course,
it's the start of the summer and sadly it's the
penultimate Test and we've only just started summer. But it
is at the beautiful Base Reserve, surrounded by Pula Karla.
I can't impress upon people enough how lucky we are
now at the test venues we have here in New Zealand.
(17:27):
They are gorgeous. But it's not about being pretty. It's
about success. What has to happen a Friday?
Speaker 4 (17:33):
Are you talking about the team?
Speaker 2 (17:34):
You're talking about with the Patchellwah No, no, no talking
about the team. We know what's going to happen, what's
going to look preity, But what about the team?
Speaker 4 (17:40):
Well, depending on conditions, Mitchell Santner could come back into
the equation what.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
He got put up to the media. Doesn't that say
enough to you?
Speaker 4 (17:48):
Look, I sat in this exact seat last week, yep,
when the black Caps basically confirm Nathan Smith was going
to debut by putting them up for media. And they've
done the exact same with Mitchell Satner today. So readings
that what you will? Has he very much towed the
official line, which was, oh well, we'll wait and see
what conditions say. But remember the black Caps got majorly
caught up with their pants down when we played at
the base in reserve earlier share when they didn't pick
(18:09):
a spinner. Nathan Lyne took a ten for Glenn Phillips
took a five for you know, So imagine what a
specialist could do. Whether or not that'll speak them this
time around into just shoehorning a spinner and to the side,
we will have to wait and see.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
So Smith goes, Santa comes in if that's the way
they're going to go, any other tweaks. Finally they think
stead and the light going and go you know what, Blundele,
You're tired. You can't beat six anymore. Maybe try eight.
Speaker 4 (18:36):
No, I don't think they will. I think they like
the idea of Blundle at six and Phillips at seven
to balance Phillips's workload. I don't agree with it. I
think Glenn Phillips is definitely one of the six best
batters in the country and therefore needs to be in
the top six. But Gary Stead is so stubborn with this,
and Tom Latham will basically be the second foil to that.
I don't see them making any major changes to the
(18:56):
banning because let's be honest, it wasn't the batting that
costs that first testing much.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Is it.
Speaker 4 (19:01):
Well, it was the field.
Speaker 2 (19:02):
You drop a guy wonder and you drop them again
and again and again and again.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
So they could have Adam harry Brook eighteen. They eventually
gone for one hundred and seventy one. They lost by
what eight wickets? The lead was one hundred and fifty
in the first innings.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
So to roll in and get rid of a conway
and say, Will Young you can climb in because Will
Young was the player of the series, that remarkable Test
Series victory over India. But that's unjustified and what do
you open?
Speaker 4 (19:32):
I mean, look, they could do it out. I don't
think they will. If we're talking about what they did
in India, then they wouldn't pack much or center they'd
pick AJ's pattel. You know, these things are all theoretical,
but they do tend to take a horses for course's approach.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
So Conway will stay and the Test season finishes before
we even know it, and then we look it again
to re establish next season because next year it's all
about short vision.
Speaker 4 (19:52):
What do we have next year?
Speaker 2 (19:53):
Four Tests?
Speaker 4 (19:54):
Two against Himbabwe and two against the West Indies.
Speaker 2 (19:57):
Seems like an age away because it is yeah to
this time next year. But hey, we'll worry about short
vision because there's plenty of that coming up and I'm
sure these guys can get up there and get dirty
on it when it's really required. Thanks for joining us here.
I look forward to talking to you again about Liam
Lawson picking up that drive. We live in Hope Fingers
crossed that day. It's motorsport.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
