Speaker 2 (00:19):
How would buy News Talks it B.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
In other Let's get underway, as always, with a look
at some of the exports stories around today. England's marrow
A Toji will captain the British and Irish Lions on
their tour of Australia after being appointed skipper by coach
Andy Farrell.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
It's hard to articulate really, it's a tremendous honor. It's
a tremendous privilege.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
You know.
Speaker 4 (02:31):
You think about the people held this position before and
it's remarkable.
Speaker 3 (02:37):
Can we? Boxer Lani Daniels has landed the biggest fight
of her career. The two division world champion will contest
for the undisputed heavyweight title against American Claressa Shields in
Detroit on the twenty seventh of July. She messaged me
on Instagram and was like, you're scared.
Speaker 5 (02:55):
To fight me?
Speaker 3 (02:56):
And I was like, huh, surprised by it, and then
she told me that my team is like turned down
the fight and I was like, well that's news to me.
And the bottom placed Eels have been handed a seventh
defeat of the NRL Rugby League season, beaten twenty points
to sixteen at home by the Dolphins. Here's paramattic coach
Jason Ryles. I love the effort.
Speaker 5 (03:17):
I love how hard we wort created opportunities.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
They had a completed ninety five percent play over the
skin of it. In the end, we're just want good enough.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
We just didn't execute our opportunities.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Jason Vine and
Darcy Walder Grave.
Speaker 6 (03:35):
Hello to Dame Nolin Todt is the coach of the
Silver Ferns ahead of the A and Z Premiership. Ready
to go. The work starts now. It's all about Mahi
for you, isn't it, Dame, Welcome to the show.
Speaker 5 (03:48):
Oh thank you for having me And as you say,
this weekend's a good start for us to see everybody
out on court. It seems like a long time coming.
But really looking forward to seeing what the new rules
look like where people are obviously for selections, but just
to get the ball rolling. But it's a it's a
good vibe at the moment, so can't wait to see
(04:11):
what this week he looks like.
Speaker 6 (04:13):
We'll look at the new ruling shortly, but plainly, the
story around the ferns around New Zealand Netball is Grace
wiki and where we sit with that. Anything advanced over
the last couple of days because a lot of former
players are coming out now going you know, you've really
got to change your mind, and I think New Zealand
Netball are starting to not cave in but showing the
ability to flex with what seems like a natural progression
(04:37):
for someone of Grace's talent.
Speaker 5 (04:40):
Yeah, very much so. I think there has been, as
you say, a lot at the happening in the media,
past players and current players making comments, which to some
degree is actually quite good for our sport as well.
You know, we're out there. Oh look, it's been a
discussion that's been had behind the scenes for a very
long time since Grace left from the board perspective, CEO myself,
(05:05):
there's a few people that have been in the discussions
I understand. I mean, I think right from the startup've
sort of voiced my opinion and really wanting Grace to
play for the Silver Firm, so I've sort of been
open about that. But I also understand from a strategic
from a commercial, from a broadcasting what that also means
(05:28):
and their ability to be able to offer something to
the rest of our athletes as well in the domestic competition.
So you know, I understand that, and you know, if
we can get ourselves to a win win situation, which
I know Netborn New Zealand are working through, it would
be fantastic. But you know there's a lot writing on
(05:49):
well for us in the silver Fings to have grace back.
But as I say, I understand where the domestic competition
and where everybody else needs to sit as well, so
hopefully we can get a win win for everybody.
Speaker 6 (06:00):
It's got to say it's quite liberating that the national
coach can actually come out and express opinion that is
against essentially the process of netball New Zealand and you're
not hushed. People can speak freely about what they want.
I think that's really healthy for the sport at an
international level.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Yeah, I really do. And you know, as you said,
people have voiced their opinion recently and that's really what
it's all about. It's our ability to voice things that
need to change or how can we do things differently
in our system. I don't think it's a negative as such.
And as I say, there has been discussions since Grace
Leaf last year, so it's not something that the board
(06:42):
don't know, but they've got to work carefully as to
what it looks like for the system everybody, the Silver
Firms but also Grace as well.
Speaker 6 (06:50):
Is there a middle ground, knowlinge that you can see
that it might be looked at? So I know that
the CEO, Jenny Wiley is particularly keen to see it happen.
It's not at a cord, it's the board's care but
is there a middle ground where everyone would be happy
that you can see?
Speaker 5 (07:07):
Yeah, I always think that there is. I always feel
that there's got to be a give and take. But
I also feel we've got to be clear strategically, as
I say, from a commercial aspect, from a broadcasting because
you know that's where the dosh comes in, you know,
so we've got to be really clear about that. And
you know, another thing that people need to know as
(07:27):
well as you know, SECN is fantastic, like you know,
like I've been here myself through my time with Lightning
and also my association with Briany, who's you know, our
one of our support staff with the Silver Firm, so
I know what it's like over here. It's tough, you know,
(07:48):
And that was one of the convens that Grace had said,
you know, like it's a full day's work where it's
a different environment to when we're at home. And even
though there's this myths about getting more money over there,
that's not the case. So you know, reality is different
sometimes too when people look at it, they think, oh, hey,
might be better at home. So you know, there's a
(08:11):
lot of things to work through. Every year, somebody's always
been approached. Every year, the player has always asked me,
and every year we've always investigated. So it's not new,
but you know, these decisions and probably waiting to see
what happens with the sky as well, broadcasting will come
into efent.
Speaker 6 (08:30):
You must be happy with what you're seeing in Grace
and her time with the Swiss, because we know she's
coming up against are not to belittle what's happening over here,
but a very stout defensive well right across their championship
that they know all about defense. This is quite a
challenge for Grace. She appears to be rising to the occasion.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
She's thriving over here. We'd still a lot to learn,
still a lot to add to her game. She's in
the high forties or fifties and volume and as you say,
coming up against world class defenders, so you know, she
can only get better. And that's probably the scary thing
for the opposition in other countries that she's just starting
(09:15):
her journey so to speak. But you know, on she
adds to probably adding a different flavor as well to
what they have, you know in Australia, the very high performance.
But she's got her own swagger in her own way,
so I know it's a reciprocal sort of relationship. But
I'm rapped. I'm rapped where she currently is and the
(09:36):
shifts I've seen in her game so far.
Speaker 6 (09:38):
Dame Nolan Turduer, as always, thank you very much for
your time and for being so open with us.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
All awesome. Thanks for your call.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
St.
Speaker 3 (09:51):
We all know that modern day sport, professional sport is
a business and there are a lot of comparisons to
be made between the corporate world and the sporting world.
But why, oh why have sports administrators, almost without exception,
lost the ability to speak to the normal everyday fan.
How have they become masters of saying a lot without
(10:13):
actually saying anything at all. It seems like every time
a sports administrator does a media appearance these days, their
answers are littered with what can best be described as
corporate speak, business buzzwords. You know what I mean, core competencies.
We're going to circle back on that deliverables learnings. So
(10:33):
though they've plugged the question, they've been asked into AI
and it spat out a clever answer, empty words and
phrases that really mean nothing at all and leave us
none the wiser about the issue that's being talked about.
And the one that shows the most disconnect between administrators
and fans is referring to us, the fans, as stakeholders
(10:57):
in theory, I guess we are, but as soon as
we're referred to in that way, we become nothing more
than a commodity. Sports fandom is built on passion. We
watch sport because we love its emotion, the roller coaster,
it takes us on the reward at the end of
an often mundane working week that we endure. The last
(11:19):
thing we want is for sport to become just another
part of everyday life. It's not its beauty is in
the fact that it's not real life. It's theater, it's entertainment,
it's an escape. So sports administrators, here's a tip. Talk
in those terms. Talk with passion, talk with honesty, be real.
(11:43):
Talk to us enough of the corporate clap trap and
more of the qualities that attract us all the sport
in the first place.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax into the
Chamber we go.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Today there was a decision made, well it was announced anyway,
that if Auckland FC make the Grand Final of the
A League, it'll be held at go Mediaumount Smart Stadium
rather than the much big capacity Eden Park in late
May over King's Birthday weekend. Is this the right decision?
That you have fewer people there, but it is the
spiritual and in fact actual home of Auckland.
Speaker 6 (12:20):
Fcllo Loo Luggers. Stop doing this ton But it's not
a football story. I believe that they can't get to
Eden Park because the Blues are there, so their hands
were tied.
Speaker 3 (12:31):
Not so much, yes, correct on the Saturday. They could
have played the Grand Final on the Sunday. It's not
Auckland FC's decision, of course, it's the decision of the
A League, so they could have easily said, look, we
want the ticket revenue of forty five thousand rather than
the twenty eight to twenty nine thousand. You can provide somehow, though,
Auckland f C have argued the case and I think
(12:52):
got one hundred percent the best outcome. It's so right
FORFC plainly. I'm surprised though that the A League have
foregone a lot of money because they would have packed
out Eden. Part I think ticket sales for this final
should they get there, big asterisk on this, should they
get there, there's so many people, thirty thousand people, it
(13:15):
mounts part easy. They've pretty much done that every week,
so adding another ten k fight.
Speaker 6 (13:20):
For your tickets, they are going to be Hen's teeth. Yep.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Somebody at Auckland FC has the powers of negotiation of
a master negotiator from history who I can't put a
finger on right now, but somebody who's got negotiation powers
that have got them at mounse mate, You're so right.
He may have lent us wait to the argument. This
may be what's happened anyway, As you say, we don't
(13:44):
know if they're there yet. We'll find out this weekend.
Who their semi final opponent is for home and away
semi final action of the next two weekends, Super Rugby
Crusaders Chiefs. I don't expect you in any way to
be objective about this, being a man who bleeds red
and black Crusader's Chiefs tomorrow night. The Crusader's a favorite,
probably because they're at home. Is this a Grand Final
(14:04):
address rehearsal.
Speaker 6 (14:05):
From Bleeding Black Riga Mortes is set in. I'll be
very worried about that. Yes it is. I think maybe
to be nice if there was an Australian team there,
but I can't see the power in Australian teams. Look,
the Hurricanes are going, hey, don't write us off, and
the Blues are in a late dash to do it,
and I think any of these combinations, but when it
(14:28):
looks form throughout the season and you look at the
story history between those two sides, this could be an
absolute hum dinger. But hey, Jason, they're playing at the
Orange Theory lean to in christ Church and look for
Canterbury's sake, we just hope it hoses down and it's
freezing cold.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
Well yeah, well, I'm just not sure every fan hopes
that but I know exactly what you're saying. The other
thing about this being the Grand Final rehearsal, and you
talked about those teams, you know, Yes, the Australian teams,
the Brumbies and the Reds currently third and fourth, the
Hurricanes finding some form, the Blues really trying to get
there as well. Is that Can you see any of
those teams winning three, in fact, even two big matches
(15:08):
back to back. I'm talking knockout matches here in order
to even make the Grand Final. It just seems like
the Crusaders and the Chiefs are far better equipped to
do just that than the other teams in the compash year.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
It's not only equipped as far as manpower, it's also
the mental strength and the capability to back themselves to
do that. And we know in sport how big that is.
But I say, I want to find you got to
lose one first. But both of these teams know what
it takes to get into a final. Both these teams
know what it takes to win a final, so they
(15:39):
are armed to the teeth with that experience.
Speaker 3 (15:41):
What a mouthwatering prospect tomorrow night in christ which are
a live commentsary incidentally on Gold sport and via iHeartRadio.
Just before we exit the chamber, the Warriors Dars this
won't have escaped your attention. Have won their last three matches,
the Broncos, the Knights, the Cowboys. Tomorrow night they play
the Dragons. The last time they won four straight matches
was a back end of the twenty twenty three season.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
What say you, records are made to be broken, right
not or rewritten if you will. They're on a tear
right now. It's hard to look past them, but it
is the NRL and we will always go back to this.
You're five percent off the game, You're going to get destroyed.
As you look at the game last night, which was fantastic,
the Eels up against the Dolphins, and the energy in
(16:25):
that match and what happened and how it operated. This
is a thrilling competition regardless, and after the heart attacks
they gave us last week the Warriors, will it be
any different? Probably not, but it should be a thrilling ride.
Just you know, watch your fingernails.
Speaker 3 (16:42):
Absolutely I'll be I'll be chewing them down to the bow,
no doubt. Lots of sport to look forward to over
the weekend, including of course, the Warriors against the Dragons.
Speaker 6 (16:50):
So I just got to say a weak thing as well.
Black ferns start off fair defense or I suppose trying
to win again the Rugby World Cup. Are they taking
on the wall ARUs and that is one that I'm
super super keen to watch, wishing them the best because
this is another mountain to climb.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
Absolutely yep, no, I couldn't agree more pumped this one
as they take on Australia tomorrow at around about five o'clock.
That's us in the chamber today.
Speaker 1 (17:14):
