Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello there and welcome into a new week and to
a fresh episode of the Sports Fixed podcast and association
with GJ. Gardner Homes New Zealand's most trusted home builder.
What a weekend it was. I'm Jason Pine on Monday,
October thirteen to try and recap some of it for you,
Elijah Few pops into the chamber as we talked Bathurst

(00:42):
and also the All Blacks touring squad named today for
the Northern Tour. Eric Thompson provided amazing coverage over the
weekend on ZB and in the New Zealand Herald. What
did he make of that quite extraordinary Bathhurst one thousand
yesterday around the rain soaked surfaces of Mount Panorama. He's
going to join us on the podcast and the Latters

(01:04):
and sports news coming your way as well, so let's
get into it in the news. As always, Let's get
you underway with a look at some of them sports
stories around today. Sammy Maxweller has become the first New
Zealander to win a uci mountain Bike World title in
any discipline. After triumphing in the women's cross country chief

(01:24):
in a second at the season ending event in Quebec
to seize the overall crown, I.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Just yeah, I think about how much pressure as athletes
we go through and how much stress we put ourselves through.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
Breakers Big man Sam and Inger is listing their struggles
after being beaten eighty seven eighty one by the Southeast
Melbourne Phoenix at home. He top scored with twenty nine points,
but Rob Baker, who added fourteen, was his only teammate
in double figures.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
I think we just did a poor job of defensive
rotations at times. I think we did a poor job
of managing possessions and I think we played into their
hands of getting sped up and taking rush shots. And
you can see that player on the fourth quarter when
we kind of let that lead.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Slip and Australia have chased down three hundred and thirty
one to be India buy three wickets with an over
despare in their full match at the Women's Cricket World.

Speaker 3 (02:12):
Cup straight so straight, it takes both players out of
the equation.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
It goes all the way and with that a six
off the last and it's down to a magnificent wind.

Speaker 1 (02:27):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, It's Sportsfix with Jason Paine.

Speaker 2 (02:32):
You're listening to the Sports Fix podcast. Twenty three year
old kee we Matt Paine and all time legiond Garth
Tander have delivered Ford a win for the ages and
an incident packed rain hit extraordinary Bathurst one thousand. In
a race dominated by wet weather and seven safety car periods,
the battle for the Peter Brock Trophy boiled down to

(02:53):
a stunning final run to the checkered flag. New Zealand
Herald Motorsport writer Eric Thompson was at Mount Panorama to
watch it all play out. Et have you ever seen
anything like it?

Speaker 1 (03:06):
No?

Speaker 5 (03:06):
I have not, piny and for the first time ever,
when I get back home, I'm going to skip the
first fifty laps and sit there and watch that race again,
because I swear to the Good Lord I missed it.
I'm there. It was just such an amazing, amazing race.
And you know, like we always looked forward to seeing

(03:27):
the highlights of a crash on incident, the highlights were
almost becoming well, actually did I see that? How did
I miss that one, And I'll tell you a funny
story pointing at one stage, I was busting for a
bathroom break and I stood up and a gentleman in
his next sitting next to me in the media room said,

(03:47):
oh God, if you go to the toilet, you're going
to miss something. I said, Unfortunately, I might be suffering
that old man affliction. Your listeners to work that one out.
But it literally was, you sit there, it's a busting
point before you legged it off to the bathroom. That's
the sort of thing. And it wasn't just me. There
were people in that room that had been going for many,

(04:08):
many years, and it's the same thing. We were hook
line and sinkered to that race. It was amazing.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
Another one of your lines here. I love You're right,
a race full of chaos, carnage and heartbreak. And I
want to get to Ryan Wood and his heartbreak in
just a second. But Matt Pain, how on earth is
that young head on those shoulders staying so calm and
the most treacherous of circumstances.

Speaker 5 (04:38):
Ah, can you imagine having Garf Canda in your corner? Yes?

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Well, good point.

Speaker 5 (04:43):
Five years and he was talking to Matt the whole time,
and you know, just as long as the engineers. But
there's one really interesting thinging. At one stage when Goulding
got pinged for that five second penalty, the whole news
room and everybody else is just yelling it, Matt, don't
just let him go. Just let him go. He's got

(05:05):
a five second penalty. And afterwards we wanted if he
knew at the five second penalties and pains. You know, yeah,
I knew about that, but I couldn't let him go.
So it's just not me.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
How's that unbelievable? He's such a promising young driver, isn't he.
We've had some beauties, haven't we Around Mount Panorama. We
think of Greg Murphy, we think of Scotty McLoughlin and
Shane van Gisberg and many others. What might the future
hold for Matt Paine having won Bath, who set such
an early stage in his career.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
Oh, I just sets them up for something quite spectacular.
And also I know we'll touch on Ryan Wood a
little later, but from a New Zealand Motorsports the specter,
Van Gisburg and McLaughlin owned that most Australian category and
the Mountain for a couple of years. Well, we've got
two more on the wings, I mean, and Assie won

(05:56):
it last year for the first time in about five
or six years. Now we've got two young guns charges
right at the very start of their career. So we're
going to own that place and a championship again.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
Timing Ryan Would. Let's talk about Ryan Wood in the heartbreak.
He he may well have won that race et had
his engine not failed him.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
Right, absolutely that that was a pretty much a general consensus.
He was so fast in that right, I mean so
fast and he survived a couple of restarts, so you
know he had you know, he had the you know,
he had command and control of the chasing path. Ryan
Would did. And that's even it's not more impressive than

(06:38):
Maddie Payne, because you know, just potentially bran Wood might
have more potential. I remember having a chat with Shane
Bean Gisbergen before he went off to NASCAR quite a
few years ago, and Ryan Wood was just in super too,
and I said, you know, where do you think of
the kiwis you know that that might make an impact
like you did in a championship And without a split

(07:01):
second hesitation, he said, Brian Wood, he said, he's got
it naturally gifted. And you know without mechanic, I mean,
you need man and machine to win that race. They
both have to work in harmony. And unfortunately those Buntu
and Journy racing cars, both sides of the garage, yeah, expired,

(07:22):
shall we say, in.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Those treacherous conditions e t. And you had a close
up look at them. We were just watching on television.
And and once you look inside, once you got the
camera inside the driver's car, so getting an idea of
what they are seeing and what they are seeing is
is basically nothing. The visibility is so poor at speeds
like that and having to make split second decisions, split

(07:46):
second you know, movements of the car, tiny little metronomic
you know, moves of the steering wheel. How on earth
do those guys keep their call and keep control of
their cars?

Speaker 5 (08:00):
Well, first of all, it makes corna one look like
a scale electric things that you rationing your garage. They
would have they would have shut that down and send
everybody home, but not the super And you're right, when
the fog came down across the top of the mountain
skyline and diving down into the dipper, I think Davy
Reynolds put it precisely, said, I was just hanging on
in there. I had no idea where the car was.

(08:23):
And he said, all you're concentrating on is a flashing
red light in front of you. He said, he couldn't
see a thing. So and they're doing that at two
hundred and sixty seven two seventy kilimeters an hour.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Across the top, utterly, utterly remarkable stuff. Et thanks for
all your work across the weekend on ZB and through
the New Zealand Herald, that is New Zealand Herald motorsport
expert Eric Thompson joining us on Sports Fix SPORTSFX. I
was thinking a bit about R three sixty rugby three
sixty over the weekend and the types of players from

(08:56):
New Zealand who might be tempted to join this new
competition if in fact it does get off the ground.
Let's assume that it does. It would obviously be most
attractive to a player who's coming towards the end of
their all blacks career, who's been to a World Cup
or even World Cup's plural and is looking for the
last contract or two before they retire and move on

(09:18):
to the next stage of their lives the sorts of
players who right now look to finish their careers up
in Japan, and there are any number of former All
Blacks up there right now, Sam Kin, TJ. Petinada, Aaron Smith,
Brody Retallick, just to name a few. If Our three
sixty gets off the ground, it feels like it's the
Japanese clubs who should be more worried, because they'll have

(09:39):
major competition for the players who right now see Japan
as their final rugby destination. I look at the current
crop of All Blacks and who might have their head
turned by R three sixty, And as I say, it's
guys who have had very good All Blacks careers, have
been to a World Cup or two, but who are
not now first choice in their position, and who may

(10:00):
or may not go to the next Rugby World Cup.
If I'm our three sixty, those are the types of
guys I'm getting in touch with. I'd be on the phone,
for example, to Sever Reese and he's only contracted until
the end of next year, not twenty twenty seven. Ricco
Yowani might be another one. Dalton PAPOALII might be an option.

(10:20):
Even Anton Lennott Brown who's currently contracted through to the
end of twenty twenty eight. But again we're talking about
older players. Unless R three sixty is able to tempt
an elite young player into their fold, a first choice
all Black who's nearer the start of their career than
the end, then I'm not sure too much has changed

(10:42):
and there's no need really for us to panic or
even have any great concern about this. If if R
three sixty could tempt Cameroy Guard or Wallace Atiti or
Will Jordan, then we would have a problem. That would
be an entirely different conversation.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfax.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
This is the sports Fix podcast, and into the Chamber
we go. The People's Chamber on a Monday. Elijah who
joined us. Elijah, I'm not the biggest motorsport fan going around.
It's certainly not my sweet spot, but I was glued
to that Bathurst coverage yesterday, particularly the closing stages. What
did you make give it all? Mate?

Speaker 3 (11:25):
Yeah, I'm in some of the Boata Zoo Piney. I'm
not the biggest motorsport head, but Bathurst is one of
those events that draws in a casual fan like myself
and that was just amazing. I managed to catch the
back end of that race. It was just chaos in
terms of the conditions. Horrendous conditions. No clue how any
of those drivers who actually finished the race managed to

(11:45):
finish the race. But a great result for New Zealand Motorsports,
Matt Paine taking it out from eighteenth place all the
way to finishing at the top of the podium, and
he joins an elite list of fellow keys who've won.
Who's Who of New Zealand Motorsport. You're Jim Richards, Stephen Richards,
you're Greg Murphy's, steenvan gersberg and Scott McLoughlin and now

(12:05):
Matt Payin adds himself to that elite list. So what
a spectacle it was, I must say.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
Yeah, not a bad list to be a part of
a when you mention those names and what they've gone
on to achieve. Greg Murphy a four time winner at Bathurst,
and we look at what Shane van Guzbergen and Scott
McLaughlin are doing now in NASCAR and an Indy car.
Who knows what the future might hold for Matt pain
I was thinking about those conditions, you know, I mean
It's hard enough for you and I to drive on
the motorway it's sixty k when it's raining and the

(12:33):
wipers are working over time, and you know, you're just trying,
You're just trying to get to where you're going. It
felt to me at parts of that race as though
they were just really giving themselves over to the machine
and just crossing their fingers and hoping for the best.
Because goodness me, those conditions and the low cloud up
at the top of Mount Panorama, how on earth they

(12:55):
have the courage to do what they did is just
so admirable, isn't it.

Speaker 3 (13:00):
Yeah, it is. I would have done. I would have
crashed it too one and probably did what was Chas Mosta,
who dropped into the crowd and grabbed the can of beer.
That would have been me, And I guess watching the
I guess that was it. The driver's dashboard, the view
and you could barely see anything. The visibility was so poor.
And yeah, I think a lot of his I guess

(13:21):
memory as well of memorizing the track, And I guess
that goes to show the amount of homework and the
amount of detail that goes into a big race like
Bathurst and driving around for six hours or so, so
credit to the drivers. He did finish the race, but yeah,
I can never drive in conditions like that. That's that's
quite scary.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
And for it to be so close after one thousand
kilometers for them to be separated at the end. I
know Golding had had the five second penalty, but Reynolds
was right there as well, and for some of the
action that was happening, you know, when the basically the
two or three cars were just side by side, hairing

(13:59):
down Conrod straight at you know, at over two two
hundred and thirty clicks. It's just I just thought it
was an amazing sporting theater. I can't remember last year's
last year's Bathurst, but they were referencing it, saying it
that actually was pretty boring by comparison, but that was
one they'll talk about for a long long time. Maybe
it should just rain at all of these at all

(14:21):
of these events, Elija, Maybe they should just if it's
not raining, they should just dump a big monsoon bucket
from above or something. I don't know.

Speaker 3 (14:27):
Yeah, no, it sounds sounds good. I guess one driver
I should mention who had an unfortunate ending was Ryan Wood,
who has probably led for the majority of that race,
had had the race in his control and unfortunately engine
issues let him down at the back end, and he
could have been the key we would be talking about
today if it wasn't for those issues. So unfortunately for

(14:48):
Ryan Wood, but I guess jubilation and elation for for
Matt Pain.

Speaker 2 (14:51):
Absolutely. Let's go to the all black squad which has
been named today for the Northern Tour. Absolutely no surprises
in this at all. I think leading into it, we
perhaps diluted ourselves by thinking there might be a few
new faces. George Bell comes in replacing his Canterbury team
mate Brodie mckellister, and Tavita Muffalao is the only uncapped

(15:13):
player in the thirty six man squad. Did you think
that they might tinker somemore or has the time for
tinkering being and gone now?

Speaker 3 (15:22):
Yeah, honestly, I'm not too surprised by the squad raises
gone with. He's shown a lot of loyalty sticking with
some of the players who I guess many thought would
be on the trop guys like Sevu Reesent and Rico
Yoanni and from the Christie But I guess for those guys,
this is pretty much the last chance for them to
prove themselves on this Northern tour. I do think it
helps having the All Blacks fifteen. I think if the

(15:42):
All Backs fifteen wasn't there, then Scott Robinson was probably
would probably be more inclined to include some of the newer,
younger players into his squad. But because that All Blacks
fifteen is there, allowed, I guess the next crop of
players to get that experience of touring and taking on
some international competition. So yeah, overall, not too surprised by

(16:03):
what Scott Robinson's done for the squad.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
Yeah, you make a really good porn Actually thirty or
Blacks fifteen squad named tomorrow, And I guess if you're
named in that squad, you're probably let's say you're a
fringe All Black or someone coming in to the All
Black squad as a new face. You're probably more likely,
aren't you to get some decent rugby in those All
Blacks fifteen matches than you are, you know, almost being
sort of man number thirty four to thirty five or

(16:28):
thirty six with the All Blacks. So and they've always said,
haven't they They can always bring guys in. So yeah, I
was fill like Christy was the one I thought they
might they might sort of say goodbye to. There are
reports that he'll play his rugby outside of New Zealand
next year. I just wonder why they wouldn't take Kyle Preston,
for example, or even Dylan Pledger. But those two guys

(16:49):
will be in that All Blacks fifteen tomorrow, won't they.

Speaker 3 (16:52):
Yeah, you'd have to assume. And I guess there's so
many of those players who many thought could crack the
All Blacks main team that we will probably get a
starting run in that All Backs fifteen squads. As you
mentioned Kyle Preston, the Pledger, a guy like Shafeie Hackey
over in Canterbury, maybe some like Lucas Casey from Otigo
loose forward there. So yeah, I guess a huge opportunity

(17:13):
for those young players. And I guess if we look
to that first Test against Ireland in Chicago, because Razors
kept such a similar squad to last time, I guess
the lineup should be predictable for that first Test in Chicago.

Speaker 2 (17:26):
Yeah, I would imagine so guys like Quinta Pye, who
was so good in that previous test against Australia over
in Perth. I think he probably keeps his place. In fact,
I think, yeah, you're right. Is there anybody who's coming
back in who would disrupt that starting lineup? I guess
we've got a couple of weeks to think about that,
and Boden Barrett might be the only one. Elijah, maybe

(17:48):
he comes back in at first five.

Speaker 5 (17:49):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (17:50):
Yeah, I think yeah, I think that does sound like
that Bowden is on his way to coming back. I
guess the other position I look at is the loose
forward trio. I think ardi is the only certainty. Do
they stick with what they did in Perth and bring
have Simon Parker at six and Peter Luckaye at eight
and Wallace Tety off the bench or do they tends
that around? But yeah, I think it'll be quite similar

(18:11):
to what we've seen in past tests with your backs.

Speaker 2 (18:13):
All right, that's us in the chamber for today. Thanks
as always Elijah for popping in and kicking around a
couple of topics. We'll do it again next Monday.
