Speaker 2 (00:21):
Hello there and welcome into the Sports Fix podcast. At
the back end of a Monday to Friday working week,
at the front end of a Darcy and Jason working weekend,
this is Sports Fix with JJ Gardner Homes New Zealand's
most trusted home builder.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
It's hardly worked though it is at Darcy a good.
Speaker 4 (00:37):
Point, and it never stops. It's continuous. But I wouldn't
have it any other way. Look, I'm not bored yet
after what twenty three, twenty four years, so I'm may continue.
And I know you the same way.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yep. Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I was going to say, if I know you, and
I think I do, you wouldn't want anything to change.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Heaps to get through today.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I want to talk with you about the weekend, about
the Warriors, about Super Rugby, about Auckland FC.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
Who's chatting to us on the Sports Fix podcast today,
Gary Burchet.
Speaker 4 (01:02):
He is the head of Sport for Sky Sport News
out today that secondary school is back. There is no
orphaned engagement. We'll talk to him about what's changed since
twenty twenty two, in fact, a number of things, if
we've got enough time. So Gary Goodchick joining us.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Surely looking forward to hearing from Gary.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
And I've got a few thoughts too about one of
our one of our top sportsmen and why I like
him so much.
Speaker 3 (01:28):
That's to come, so let's get into it.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
In other news, let's get going with some of the
big sports stories around today. A preparation truncated by celebrations
of a first PGA too a victory has paid dividends
for golf of Ryan Fox. He's parted a four hunderd
pass sixty seven to be one shot off the clubhouse
lead at the year's second major, the PGA Championship in
(01:50):
North Carolina.
Speaker 5 (01:51):
Plade eight in holes yesterday and that was the only
thing I did. Basically had a few balls on Tuesday
and played one hole before the storm came in, so
obviously in yours playing well and just tried to get
out of my own way and just let it happen today.
And he was really happy with how I did that.
Speaker 2 (02:04):
Mixed emotions per former silver Fern Kayla Johnson after answering
this SOS for Sunday's am Z Premiership Netball game against
the Tactics and Takanini. Johnson made four appearances for the
Mystics last season in a similar capacity. The last play
for the Stars in twenty twenty two.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
I'm nervous. They haven't had a lot of training.
Speaker 6 (02:23):
I've been playing a bit of social here and there
as at the club, but nothing at the level that
is required on Sunday and.
Speaker 2 (02:30):
The Hurricanes continue to raise their targets at the back
end of the Super Rugby regular season. With three games
to play, they hold the sixth and final playoff spot.
Coach Clark laid Law says there's no resting on their
laurels ahead of tonight's match against the Highlanders.
Speaker 7 (02:42):
One hundred percent. We're going to chase as much as
we can. But you stripped that bark of what does that,
Luke Clik. It looks like preparing really well for the
hound doesn't try to win this week at home and
if we're good enough to do that, then we'll think
about the Rads and you know they're obviously above us
at the minute.
Speaker 1 (02:55):
US and a Vinion It's Sports Fix with Jason Hyne
and Dusty Waldgrave and it's warm.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
Welcome now to the Sports Fixed podcast to Gary Birchett.
He's the head of sport for Sky Sports. Good evening,
Gary Darcy.
Speaker 6 (03:10):
Pleasure to be with you again and.
Speaker 4 (03:12):
Great to have you on Massive News today. First fifteen
rugby is back, first and fore.
Speaker 6 (03:18):
Most wonderful news. How well, I really have to thank
Sky has to thank the schools for their ongoing enthusiasm
and for their desire for schoolboy rugby to be beamed
around the screens across Alta. It's not a sky Lit initiative.
This is done in concert with the schools. As you
(03:41):
can appreciate, you need to be invited on school grounds
to showcase rugby, so we can't do this without the
support of the schools. And what we're hearing is that
schools and communities are just truly excited for the prospect
of bringing you know, first fifteen rugby back, and we're
encouraged by their enthusiastic response. I think it's a great
win for rugby. You know, in this day and age.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Did they approach you, Gary?
Speaker 6 (04:06):
The conversations have been ongoing, I think since Sky stopped
doing First fifteen sort of nineteen twenty nineteen twenty twenty,
so and we just got to a point where there
was there was such a chorus of enthusiasm from rugby
fans and the schools that there was just an opportunity
(04:27):
to seriously reignite the competition. So we've heard, we've listened,
and we've responded.
Speaker 4 (04:32):
Is there a case of right money changing hand? What
a Sky stand to make out of this? And indeed,
what are the schools stand to make out of us?
When we're talking purely fiscally.
Speaker 6 (04:43):
Here, this is not a commercial play. In fact, you
know what it takes to put on a sports broadcast.
Whilst it won't have the kind of production spec that
Super Rugby or some of our more prominent sports justify,
there's still an expense of mobilizing teams around the country.
(05:03):
So this is this is not a commercial play for Sky,
but it's more of a complementary experience, but more tapping
into one of the most passionate fan bases of rugby
union in this country. The all good sporting contests need
healthy tribalism, and I don't think there's greater tribalism than
(05:24):
what you see at first fifteen level, and as a
relatively new Kwee. I remember like coming to this country
and then seeing videos of you, say, the Kevin's kids
all coming down, you know, in convoy onto the field
of play and doing the Harker. I remember sending those
visuals to my colleagues and friends around the world who
(05:46):
are absolutely staggered that this kind of passion and loyalty
at school level exists. So sport is about celebrating that passion,
celebrating that rivalry, and we're glad that we can be
the conduit to bring you know, that collegiate and that
that healthy level of competition to our screens and to
our fans.
Speaker 4 (06:07):
Are you guys going to take it because it won't
be cheap. You said it's not going to be super
rugby level production, but I'm presuming you're not going to
film it on potato. You're going to put in a
really good shot to film all these games. So you
guys are actually taking a wallet to put this on air,
aren't you.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
Yeah, we've also got to be smart about how we
do productions, and in this day and age, remote productions
are very tactical and strategic way of capturing live sport.
You don't bring a full ensemble of production personnel to
a venue. With fiber connectivity, you can actually bring pictures back.
You can have your director in a studio, you can
(06:45):
have your commentators in a studio, your tape operators, your
audio and you can do a very solid production without
the production footprint at the actual match itself. So wherevery
smart about the way we want to deliver this kind
of content. And having said that, it's also worth noting
(07:06):
that we are going to be bringing some of how
big guns to do the occasional call like Jeff Wilson, Mills,
Muliaina you know justin Marshall broadcasters, but they're also and
I also know you know the pressures and the opportunities
that young men and women in this country you have
when given an opportunity to be featured on national broadcast.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
So the elephant in the room is Auckland one A.
They're not involved. Tell us about the way that work.
Did you approach them, did they walk? What was the
deal there? Because this is something that you know the
biggest population in New Zealand will go what about them?
What's the deal with that? Gary?
Speaker 6 (07:49):
Look, we've had a constructive dialogue with the Auckland one
Hour Competition as part of our planning. But yes, you're
right that no matches from that league will be broadcast
this season on Sky. And look, we're not in the
position to coerce or force it's that that's not our objective.
We certainly remain open to working with the one A
(08:09):
competition in the future and as head of Sport, I
hope that when they look at the brand and the
style and the tonality of coverage that they see on Sky,
that we give it, you know, the Goldies and the
Marshes and the Mills and some of our top tier
talent in tandem with a very slick, you know, graphics
and creative package that they look and understand what we're
(08:30):
trying to do with rugby. We want to grow the
game at Sky. We want more people to play rugby,
we want more people to talk about rugby. So we
think it's there's no better opportunity than tapping into a
really strong and cherished format that is a hotbed of
passion and very healthy rivalry.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
Wonderful stuff, Gary, Thanks very much for your time. Hey,
enjoy your weekend and joyed tonight's have funning games with
the Hurricanes, Mate and the Highlanders go well.
Speaker 6 (08:57):
I'll be at the cake. I'll be at the cake,
and you enjoy your weekend sports vex.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
So for the fifth round in a row, Ryan Fox
is having a pretty good time of it on the
PGA too, or off the back of his maiden PGA
to a win at Myrtle Beach a week ago, he
heads into the second round of the PGA Championship Major
in pretty good shape, a tie for fourth, just three
shots off the leader at Quail Hollow, and just four
(09:23):
days after he won his PGA Tour title, his very
first one, which actually got him into this tournament. He
wasn't even supposed to be playing this weekend, so a
nice surprise for Ryan Fox, and he's continuing with his
excellent form.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
I've often said it's.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
A heck of a lot easier to wish success for
someone if they seem like a decent person, and Ryan
Fox just strikes me as a high quality human being.
I've never met Ryan Fox, never had the chance, never
had the pleasure spoken to him a few times in interviews,
and he just strikes me as you're every day down.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
To worth key.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
We doing exceptionally brilliant things on the golf courses around
the world, just doing us proudsent us on the greens
and the fairways of the world, and afterwards stopping off
at the supermarket for a frozen pizza and a bottle
of wine on his way home with his family. None
of the years and graces of the real superstars of
(10:22):
golf and other sports that probably send someone out to
buy their meal. Not Ryan Fox probably drove home to
where they're staying with his wife and two daughters, stopped off,
said to us girls, what kind of pizza do you want?
Speaker 3 (10:33):
While I'm in there, I'm going to get a bottle
of wine. Then we'll go home.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Just an average everyday KeyWe And as I say, it
is a lot easier to wish good things for people
and be delighted for them when they achieve them if
those people are just good buggers. And that's exactly what
Ryan Fox says.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
Let's get into the chamber, and I think we should
call it the prediction Chamber, because that's exactly what I
want to do. I want to try, against my better judgment,
I must say, to predict a few sporting results across
the weekend, starting with Super your Crusaders and my Hurricanes,
both in action tonight. Both are favorites to win their matches.
Hurricanes play the Highlanders five past seven, Crusaders played the
war Retars nine thirty five. Which of our two team
(11:20):
starts do you think is more likely to come a
cropper in a game they should win?
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Hurricanes the eighteen from the Zealand that have gone over
the ditch one right, So it's hard yards for Crusaders,
especially after they got punchs in the face by the
Chiefs in the last half of last weekend. So you'd
think they would rally. But the Wartars very different team
at homes they are away. I'm just trying to channel
what happened way back in gee when was it two
(11:48):
thousand and I don't even know anymore, when they absolutely
destroyed the Waratars. It was like ninety four seventeen, I
want to say, so, I'm hoping for that, but I
wouldn't put it past the Waratars to rollers.
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Well.
Speaker 2 (12:03):
I think the Crusaders will be okay. They've shown an
ability to bounce back from adversity of this, which they
didn't possess last year. No will Jordan's obviously in this year.
But I think they'll be okay for the Hurricane Nickel
the Mgfala's got a game. Finally, I'm looking at the
Hurricanes and I'm trying to be impartial here, but I
just can't see away the Highlanders beat the Hurricanes tonight.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
They've been so disappointing the Highlanders they have.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Been let's use these words fly in ointment. And if
the Hurricanes going in thinking oh it's a derby, but
they're not going to provide much, they will get beaten.
They can do it. It's not really be getting flogged.
The Highlander is right, they just haven't got it right
toward the end.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
Yep, No, that's a very good point.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Well, let's hope from my point of view anyway, they
don't find their mojo tonight. But we'll watch both of
those games with interest. Then we can both without any
skin in the game. Watch more Wana Pacifica against the Blues.
Can more Onana Pacifica in front of us sold out Albany.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
Beat the Blues.
Speaker 4 (12:59):
Well, the Blues are coming together at the right end
of the season. I'm sure they would rather that it
was in a case of we're going to win every weekend.
But you look now they are definitely focused. They've got
laser focus on what has to happen against more on PACIFICA.
They can't lose, so I wonder if that will be
(13:20):
enough to lift them, especially after what the Fiji jurer.
And I'm interested in what stern Vern wanted them to
learn after last week and we've got kind of clarke back. Well,
this would be massive. It's sold out, it's crazy.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Do you think stern Vern and wanting them to learn
ever uses rhyme as at all? Can you see Vern Calta,
you know, busting out the odd hiku or a limerick
of sorts.
Speaker 4 (13:44):
I've interviewed him now and it was actually the most affable,
wonderful guy. I thought of his stern as I wouldn't
surprise me. Actually it's an interesting character. This will be
one for the ages. I look right across the park,
I look at all of these different positions challenging each other,
and I think Ardie Savia is going to have a
massive target on his back. But if they concentrate too
(14:05):
much on him, there's trouble. This has got everything. I
can't predict it.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
Five past seven tomorrow night. They're the on trade of this.
Speaker 2 (14:11):
Of course, as the Warriors against the Dolphins five o'clock
sun Corps Stadium a couple of weeks ago at Magic Rand,
they were all there. It's the Dolphins at home to
the Warriors. Can the Warriors? Will the Warriors go five
on the bounce? Stop asking me question asking me the
same thing? Can they will?
Speaker 3 (14:27):
Then they can? Will they? I think they will? I
think they will.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I you know, you look at the Warriors and you
think to yourself over and we've support We've spoken about
this at length, both off and on are you and I?
They found a way this year to win the type
ones and I'm not suggesting that that's the only way
they can win rugby league matches, but it's comforting to
know that when things are tight they can get across
the line, whereas last year twenty twenty four, more often
(14:53):
than not they were second across the line, which of
course is nowhere when it comes to picking up any
points in the NRL. I think they'll beat the Dolphins
and set themselves up for what will be an absolute
humdinger on Sunday week at Go Media Stadium, when the
Raiders come calling and it's time to take revenge for
Vegas Dars.
Speaker 4 (15:14):
That's interesting because I talked to a number of athletes
and coaches about is it a case of revenge? And
it's this equal parts. I know we've broken the rear
vision mirrors off, it's not about that. It's about focusing
on the day. And then some of them like, yeah, mate,
we hated that. We're so angry. We've carried that for
the entire year so far.
Speaker 3 (15:33):
I don't know what they'll take into this.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
The Dolphins started off poorly. They're on a run at
the moment. But I look at the return of guys
like now Dulan's back and swing again. Maybe even Roger
might make a surprise appearance. We'll see, and of course
Fish back there as well. There's a lot to like
about the side. And every time I say that, they yeah,
defecate the dovey. So I don't know, so stop stop
(15:58):
right down.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
But I will say I will say that, I will
say to add fuel to that fire. It's so congested
in the middle of the pack that if the Dolphins
were to when another results went their way, they could
finish the weekend in the top. So there's any any
number of motivational factors for the Dolphins hey, before we
exit the chamber. Auckland FC Melbourne victory two legged semi final,
first leg tomorrow night in Melbourne. We know the situation
(16:20):
aggregate across the two legs. What is a satisfactory result
to come home with for Steve Coricker's men?
Speaker 4 (16:28):
Too nil? Wouldn't it be? Wouldn't it be? I mean
one nil might be a stretch, you'd say two. No,
didn't they play the victory just recently and win too nil?
Speaker 3 (16:37):
Bang on?
Speaker 4 (16:38):
There you go? I just want that again?
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Is that is that fair?
Speaker 4 (16:41):
I get the feeling talking to these guys and listen
to these guys though, that they are so prepped and
focused and down to earth. They've got their feet on
the ground. They know what they have to do. They
haven't got carried away with the success so far. That's
got to come down to Steve Coricker. I don't think
they'll change from that.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
I tend to agree because there's always the temptation when
the away legs first, a part of us to get
home with a nilall or whatever, get home with a
taigh level and then win it.
Speaker 3 (17:08):
But I think you're right to us. I don't think
Auckland have built that way.
Speaker 2 (17:11):
I don't think Steve Kraker has it in his DNA
to sit and to try and just eke out a result.
Speaker 3 (17:15):
I think they'll go there.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Tomorrow night and try and win the match and then
that'll make next weekend a lot easier for them. But
also whatever happens, a great occasion next Saturday night at
Go Media for the second League.
Speaker 3 (17:25):
We're out of time in the chamber.
Speaker 6 (17:26):
That's us beating a vex.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
