D'Arcy shared his thoughts on major sports organisations not always being forthcoming with the media.

And D'Arcy and Piney discuss the Black Ferns team named for the semi-final and former world champion track athlete Fred Kerley taking part in the Enhanced Games next May.

There will never be another one of these. This is
it four on finals, so make the most of it
because it's not coming back. This is unique. This is
your opportunity to shine till I stop being philosophical and
talk about sport.

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Yeah, let's do some sporler.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
I do like the philosophy behind your philosophical or philosophical musings. There,
Dark Look, I want to talk a couple of things
with you today. I want to talk the Blackburns, want
to talk the enhanced games. I know we're talking ticket
prices today as well, are we?

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Yeah? On Manspread, CEO of Crusaders is going to join nast.
There's been a few people with ripped underpants around the
increase in season memberships. Now the Crusaders have got a
fancy brand news stadium, so he'll explain the logic behind that.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Look forward to that and the latest and sports news
coming your way too, So let's get into it.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
In other news, let's get.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Things going with a look at some of the big
sports stories around today. Cam Royguard has deemed himself ready
for rugby again after recovering from a right foot fracture
which has seen him sideline since July. He'll come off
the bench Royguard for County's Menico in Saturday's MPC game
against Auckland in Pokakoe. We had some good tests last week,
got put through it not if anything, it's probably the
ones that were ktching back up because I've not used to.

(01:54):
I guess that's sort of type of conditioning and whatnot.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
So yeah, it was good. Yeah, and the foot responded
really well.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Speaking of comebacks, Ben C is ready to rebound from
his latest cricketing setback. Base bowler has recovered from a
side strain and earned selection in the Black Peraps for
next month's Chaffel Hadley t twenty Series against Australia. We're
trying to go out there and beau hard.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Sometimes you get injured. I've got a great support team
around me and awesome S and C and Chris Donaldson.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
I feel like I'm sureng and ready to get going here.
And Liverpool have scored an injury time to beat Athletic
ho Madrid three to two in their Champions League football
match at Anfield. Skipper Virgil Van Dyke heading home the winners.

Speaker 3 (02:32):
Dyke thanks ju find Away. At this time it's the
captain who meets Away.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
Use and a Vinion.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Pine and Dusty Walter Grave.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
And it's a warm welcome now to the Sports Fix
podcast to chief executive officer of the Crusaders. His name
is Colin man's Bridge. They're taking away bit of stick
around the pricing for membership with the new stadium in tow.
He joined us now to discuss today. Colin A.

Speaker 4 (03:03):
Darcy, how are you mate?

Speaker 3 (03:04):
I'm good, maybe slightly better than you blokes. You're under
a wee bit of fire for the pricing of season
tickets next year for Takaha, So can you just tell
us what the progress has been what the process has
been around the selling of these seasons passes and just
how big this is.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Yes, probably start off at Darcy. The first thing is
where we've had to go a bit early because we've
got a super Round which is coming, so that's compressed
some of their planning. Obviously, going in to a new venue,
you've got stadium venue builds.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
In terms of technology and ticketing you've got to do.

Speaker 5 (03:43):
So we've made a bit of progress on that, but
we're a bit compressed with a timeline because we want
to give members of opportunity to buy their seats before
the super Round and guarantee their seats for super Round
inside their membership package. So that's probably one of the
time constrain issues we've got. What we you know, thinking
about in hindsight, we probably should have just completely thrown

(04:05):
out the old naming conventions arded afresh because I think
what people have seen is they've seen going from X
to Y, seen the same name and some of the
pricings different. But we've got some new categories in the
new venue which come with food and beverage and a
high premium offerings which don't exist in the old venue.

(04:26):
So yeah, I think people are seeing that and they're going,
oh my goodness, you know, my ex has gone from
X to Y and I'm paying twice, whereas an actual
fact that the opportunity is probably a little different. You know,
they probably need to get in and have a good
hard look at the packages of the year.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
And that was a bit of a miss on our behalf.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
I've actually had probably well i would say to eight
times more positive feedback than I've had negative as well,
so into the direct feedback, and we're selling memberships like
crazy at the moment.

Speaker 4 (05:03):
So yeah, there is a bit of balance the story,
I think.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
So how do you poss position the pricing for this?
What methodology did you go through to determine what the
pricing was going to be? As you mentioned to cards
and new stadium, it's been of new stuff going on.
So how did you sit in the place you've sat
with these new passes? And what's the range? You said
they can get a cheaper memberships and season pass so

(05:27):
just tell us what the range is, yes.

Speaker 5 (05:30):
So look off the top of my head, And of
course I don't have an information in front of me because,
as you know, dusk, I'm out at the office at
the moment, but there's you can get you can get,
you know, for twenty six dollars a seat all the
way up to significantly more than that where you're paying
for food and beverage. But there's a family pass for
twenty six dollars a seat. And the process we used

(05:52):
was we actually sat down, we had a look at
our old packages.

Speaker 4 (05:56):
We said, where would people move to.

Speaker 5 (05:58):
In a new venue, what might that look like, and
let's make sure that the jump that they've got is
not is not too significant. So we took an old
versus newer proa. We then compared it with other codes
and with other stadiums. So we've had a few people
point out to us that that, oh, you know, I
can get a seat for such and such a price
at such as such a stadium, and they can, but

(06:21):
they can't get a covered seat close to food and
beverage outlets, close to all of the other amenities they've
got at the same price. So we're not making a
light for light comparison. So I think that's the issue
is that we've you know, we're getting people comparing the
cheapest offering that they can get somewhere else to the

(06:42):
most expensive or a more expensive offering than they can
get it to one New Zealand stadium.

Speaker 4 (06:47):
So we did a bit of.

Speaker 5 (06:48):
Analysis of competitive events codes and prices and we made
sure that.

Speaker 4 (06:55):
There wasn't it wasn't too difficult to go from old
to new in the new venue.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
So you can still get a membership a season pass,
but not for three times the price, which is what
the narrative is coming out. Now that the price have triple,
they're still possible to get a season pass and not
pay through the nose for is that.

Speaker 4 (07:12):
What you're saying? Absolutely?

Speaker 5 (07:14):
So the again probably the seating convention, because we tried
to bring across. People have a customary view of what
it should look like, and so we started afresh with
a new venue. Said right, that was platinum, premium or
don't get me to quote you all of the numbers
off the top of my head, which I don't have
in front of me, but go through these different categories

(07:38):
and we have similar we have less categories but some
similar names in the old venue. So people have just
gone I'm going from X to Y, where an actual
fact that they will go from X to probably something
quite different. Soorry they won't go from X to X
they'll go from X to Y and the new venue,
and the difference is the new venue has less that

(08:00):
there are very very few compromise seats. They're all significantly closer.
You know, when you take the pitch of the stadium
of this stands and you take how close they are
to the action and how much how close the amenities are.
There's significantly different seats than what they were in the
old venue. And I think that's the other thing that
people are assuming that, you know, something that might sound

(08:24):
like platinum in the old venue is a platinum in
the view in the new whereas maybe gold might be
quite equivalent, if not better.

Speaker 1 (08:34):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfex with Darcy Waldgrave.

Speaker 3 (08:40):
Major sporting organizations fascinate me from time to time. They
fascinate me in this space when they require the support
of the media of the public. They're fully keen on
engaging on every level to share the good news stories,
the positive stories, the uplifting stories around their sport. You'd

(09:02):
think this had work both ways, but sadly for a
number of organizations it does. They will run a mile
to hide any potential bad news stories from the media,
from the public. I'm presuming because they don't want to
upset their pay masters, and they're terrified that some of
the big sponsorship money will desert them if some uncomfortable

(09:24):
truths are revealed. But I don't think it's all about
uncomfortable truths. I don't think it's all about defending the
name of the sport they're involved in. I think it's
about controlling narrative, and I think it's awful. We are
the people who buy the tickets, who buy the jerseys,
who pay the TV subscriptions. We are the reason these

(09:46):
teams exist. Without us, and without our engagement, they fail
to be relevant. So I'd strongly suggest the people involved
with connection to the media and all of the major
sporting organizations stop peeing on our head and tell us
its raining because it smells of urine and it's We're

(10:09):
not buying any of it. What's wrong with being transparent?
What's wrong with a bit of truth? What's wrong with
opening a crack and a door to shed some light
on the stories? What on earth are you afraid of?
The sports that aren't afraid of a negative narrative are
welcome the sports that open up their doors for applause,

(10:31):
open up their doors for criticism, open up the doors
for comment. They are true sports that represent the public,
and I would say that the organizations out there desperately
attempting to control the narrative, it is going to blow
up in your face. You're treating us like fools, and

(10:52):
it will come back to bite you.

Speaker 1 (10:54):
The Chamber is now in session on sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (10:58):
Into the Chamber we go interesting thoughts there on certain
media organizations being treated certain ways by certain sporting organizations.
We can leave them to one side, because I want
to talk about the Black Ferns. No Georgia Miller Saturday
morning for the Black Ferns against Canada. How big a
blow is this?

Speaker 3 (11:15):
I don't think we should stress over that or focus
entirely on that. Georgia Miller is a brilliant young player.
She's shown herself up to be. People are calling her
the wahena version of the great Michael Jones, which is
pretty high praise. She's one athlete in that team, and
to catastrophize over the lack of her pays little or

(11:40):
no respect to the other players, the other superstars within
that team, and they are everywhere. Piney.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Yeah, it is you're right, it's a great team because
as you've been saying that, I've brought the team up
here in front of me, and yes, Georgia Miller is
the glaring o mission. But then you land on those
who are playing, and you find Aloahte dumont in the
ten jumper playing her fiftieth Test match. Such a steady
hands on the wheel for the black ferns. The back

(12:08):
three you have been so good. All turn on Poorsha
Woodman Wickliffe, Braxton, Sorenson, McGee. What a star she's gonna be.
Renee Holmes in the fifteen jump. But that's before you
even get to Asia let the eyeinga coming off the
reserve bench. So many wheels in the backs. But they
do say it starts up front. We're not too badly
served there either.

Speaker 3 (12:26):
Though I know. I just I like it people to
concentrate on some poor aspect of and going on, oh,
it's all looking terrible for us. You go down that
rabbit hole, it's a disastrous way to live. You've got
to look at the whole team and go these are
this is a good team. They extracted themselves out of
a hole last week. Was that entirely down to Georgia Miller.

(12:47):
It wasn't Jane less than five minutes of the second half,
and that's when they really jumped into action. And they've
got a record against Canada that what a draw and
a loss in the last couple of games. They don't
read too much into that either. This is a team
that's building and accelerating toward a final. Is that uplifting
enough for your piney?

Speaker 2 (13:04):
And that's but I'm still nervous to dart right, I'm
still I'm still nervous. I know what you're saying, and
I love the rousing nature of it all, and I
tend to look on the positive side of things as well,
and I think we'll win the game. But I am nervous.
I don't know why, but I am.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
Well, you should be because you have high expectations of
the site and more importantly, you've got skin in the game.
Are you support this team, You've watched this team, You've
been covering women's rugby for a long time, and I
think a lot of us in the media have right
from the early days. We know one cared and now
it's got to this level, the stage where they're going

(13:41):
to be eighty thousand people at twicken them to the final.
Whether we're there or not, that represents an enormous hit
for women's rugby. It is growing, it's accelerating, and we
have brought into this. That's why we're nervous, because we
want them to win.

Speaker 2 (13:59):
Cheese on toast and coffee. Saturday morning, as we get
ready for this one six o'clock kickoff.

Speaker 3 (14:04):
Hey, tees on toast for you, mate, I'll be in
the studio broadcasting.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
You can have cheese on toast in the studio or
is that not allowed? T I mean, have I been
taking food into the studio against against management orders?

Speaker 4 (14:15):
On the stime?

Speaker 3 (14:15):
See. I don't know how Hoskin would react too well
with old bits of dried up cheese and toast on
the floor and death.

Speaker 4 (14:21):
But anyway, maybe it'll stop.

Speaker 3 (14:23):
All right.

Speaker 2 (14:23):
We can talk some more about the black ferns tomorrow
as we get towards the semi final. I do want
to ask you about a story I saw pop up
this morning. Fred Curley, who was a sprinter, two time
Olympic one hundred medalist, twenty twenty two World champion. He's
the first track athlete to openly say yes I will
take part in the Enhanced Games in Las Vegas next May. Now,
for those who haven't caught up with this, it's going

(14:44):
to permit competitors to take performance enhancing drugs under medical supervision.
Now more than this dars. They've said if he breaks
Usain Bolt's world record over one hundred meters a nine
point five eight seconds, they'll give him a bonus of
one hundred and No, it's actually one point sixty seven
million dollars. What do we think about the Enhanced Games.

Speaker 3 (15:03):
I think it's an interesting aside. Don't think it will
get much traction outside of those people who are furious
about it. But the athletes have got a right to choose.
I think I'm interested in who actually signs up for
this and the quality of them. I think it will
be exposed come the Games in La themselves, with the
quality of the athletes. I mean, you look at Curly,

(15:26):
why is he there anyway? He's got a bit of
a history of no shows for drug tests.

Speaker 4 (15:32):
And the like.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
So I'm not quite sure about the quality of human
that's actually joining up. That's what concerns me.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Yeah, the free choice part is absolutely I totally agree
with you. You know, if you want to put stuff
in your body to make you go faster or run,
you know, or jump higher, or throw further, fill your boots,
do it under this, under this enhanced games framework. And
I think people will be curious to see exactly how
fast Fred Curley can run when he's all juiced up.
But yeah, I think you're right. It's almost like a
It's almost like for me pro wrestling WWF when it's

(16:05):
all just a little bit fabricated and.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
A little bit far beautifully said. I'll just reflect back
on Curly because recently he's been provisionally suspended for alleged
anti doping. That the whereabouts law, they're where about violation,
That's what I'm saying. He's also got a bit of
a checkered past with allegedly punching a former girlfriend, confrontation
with tasers and the police. So yeah, it's not dragging

(16:29):
a great deal of good will with them. Is he
to these games?

Speaker 2 (16:32):
No, he's not. And I'm not sure that matters. You know,
I'm not sure that they're I'm not sure that they're
after when they're doing their recruiting darce, I'm not sure
that they're looking for fine, upstanding human beings necessarily. I
just think they're trying to find people with a you know,
with a bit of talent will who will cross this
line and inject themselves with whatever to see how fast
they can go. Look, there will be side effects, obviously,

(16:53):
we don't know what the side effects of some of
the some of these performance enhancing drugs truly are. So yeah, look,
I think you put it perfectly. It'll be an aside,
a distraction, you know, a curiosity.

Speaker 3 (17:07):
If you like curiosity, well put I like that. What
I want to see though, when they have these games
is they need to have the athlete's name, are the
athletes event, the country, the hometown, and what drug they're
on printed on the screen so we can get an
idea about what they choosed with.

Speaker 2 (17:25):
We'll all be we'll all become experts in chemistry before
the end of the enhanced games. That's us in the
chamber today.

Speaker 1 (17:34):
