Speaker 2 (00:20):
Hi that welcome into the Sports Flex podcast for Thursday
November sixth, in association with G J. Gardner Holmes, New
Zealand's most trusted home builder, heaps to talk about as
always on Jason.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
Pint, my name is Darcy Waldergrave. And yes there is,
because there always is, good sport dominate. Do you remember
back in the day when you started in this trade off.
I'm thinking you're roughly like me by twenty twenty five
years that there wasn't as much sport to pick the
eyes out, and these days it's everywhere. And maybe that's
the Internet. Maybe it's the fact we're involved in a
(00:52):
whole lot of different Australian leads. I don't know what
it is, but it's a sea of it, isn't it?
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Far too many eyes to pick? Far too many eyes
to pick? So we'll zero in on a couple on
to talk all blacks with you. I want to talk
black hats with you. In terms of a guest who
is gracing our podcast Todayson Holarin.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Now, Jason and Helarin, you have huge to speak for
because the ex Hurricane player, but he has been coaching
with Vern Carter in Scotland and indeed the Blues aren't
here in Auckland City as well. So if anyone knows
the inside line on what Scotland will bring to this
Test match.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
I'd say it would be him, absolutely, the guy that
has scored Bogues. Very popular in Hurricanes country. Looking forward
to hearing from Jason o'hellarin and the latest sports news
coming your way too, So let's get into it. In
other news, let's get young with a look at some
of the big sports stories around today. The black Caps
have lost the first T twenty credit International to the
West and East by seven runs at Eden Park, chasing
(01:47):
one sixty five to win. New Zealand finished on one
fifty seven for nine, Captain Mitchell Sentiner heading an unbeaten
fifty five off just twenty eight balls.
Speaker 1 (01:56):
Credits to Weston.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Is the weather really squeezed us through the middle, made
us take tough options at I guess we lost what
It's frustrating. It's a little disappointing at the moment, but
we've got to move on, pretty qick. The game two
is back at Eden Park tonight. Meantime, Great Steve Water
has picked this summer's Ashes cricket series against England to
be the most competitive in recent history. Australia will be confident.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
I think England will be confident.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
A lot will depend on injuries and when if either
side loses a couple of their key bowlers. And to
make a huge suments my Tipyars whoever catches best. Wenesday
Ashes and Manchester City have romped to a four to
one victory in their Champions League Football tie at home
to Barisha Dortmund. I don't think win.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
In the end for Manchester City, four goals doing the job.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Still upbeaten winning again.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
Use and a Villian.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
It's Sports Fix with Jason Pine and Dussy, Walter Grave
and if.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
A warm Welcome now to Sports Fix podcast to Jason
o'hallerin one Test, All Black and absolute stall of the Hurricanes.
He's been an assistant coach for Scotland an assistant coach
now with the Blues. He joins us to talk about
team selection upperhead of this weekend. Good day, Jason, how
are you doing mate?
Speaker 2 (03:06):
A right?
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Doing good. Will you know fair bit about what happens
in Scottish rugby. You've been over there assisting in the
national team with you where you now boss in the
Blues vern Cotter. There's been a lot made of the
strength of this Scottish side. Is it all bluster or
do people actually have a point that they might be
troublesome for the All Blacks.
Speaker 5 (03:27):
Well, I think that the depth and the strength of
the Scottish team lies in the back line. I think
you've got Finn Russell at first I've had he's one
of the best first five ranks in the world. You've
got outside him is an outstanding player who's started the
first Lions Test against Australia before being injured. And then
you've got John vander Meurber and Darcy Graham and Black
(03:48):
King on the back three who averaged fifty tests each.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
That's a hell of a good back line.
Speaker 5 (03:53):
The boy White at halfback played on the Lions tour
as well.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
The one Glarian a mission for them.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
Unfortunately, Hugh Jones, who's done Achilles because that partnership with
Plato Toy Polato has.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
Been an outstanding one.
Speaker 5 (04:05):
So they'll miss Hugh Jones massively, but that's the strength
of the Scottish side is The key thing for them
will be can they get parody and particularly at scrum
time because the depth that prop is very, very very
porous and if Xanda Ferguson doesn't come through he's a
bit under a bit of an injury cloud, then particularly
tightly head, they could be really exposed.
Speaker 4 (04:25):
I'm expecting the Olbocks to.
Speaker 5 (04:27):
Get on top of scrum time, particularly in the last
twenty minutes when the reserve front rowers come on.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
I think the all backs can really do a number
on the Scottish.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Then you mentioned death Jason and o'hollerin, So if there
are some little holes and plenty that are up front,
where where's the depth of the pack.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
Then uh, the depth of the pack I believe for
Scotland is the middle row of Cummings and great Girl.
Chris has experienced Scott Cummings. We're not the lions TOI.
He's a great young player, good athlete as well, carry
as well, and they're both excellent defensive lineout, especially Girlko
who's now in a senior Statesman. There's a good he's
a big man. He'll compete a line out time. They've
(05:04):
got a really good lineout coach there, John Dalziel, and
they already compete this. I think they'll be okay line out,
they'll whin. They're own ball and they're quite innovative around
the ball. They're own ball two in terms of inserting
lifters and going to groundball malls and those sorts of things,
so they'll ask questions at light out time. I just
think that they're scrum is going to be a real
kelly as hell for them, and if they can't get
(05:25):
dominance and the scrum, that's going to be a key
avenue for the All Blacks to access, to gain through
penalties and then go to the lineouts and launch their
attack from good positions.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
In terms of territories, I think that the scrum will
be the key to this game.
Speaker 3 (05:38):
Presuming that Scott Robinson and his crew know exactly that
and will that be reflected? Do you think in team selection?
Am I interested in your thought around what they need
to provide, how they provide it with the team they
pick and how much do they consider that they've got
England a week down the track. There's a lot of
things to throw in the air and juggle right.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Yeah, I think it's quite simple though, Darcy. I think
you've got to go all guns blazing and those first
three tests they are the three key ones. I've got
Island under the belt, Curtsey have an excellent ar twenty
minutes now Scotland who people are talking up. But I
do think one of the little thing was Scotland a
preparation of a USA team that was no better than
the club team, which they'd be eighty five dollars not
(06:20):
a great dress rustal for the All Blacks, so that's
an issue too. I think the All Blacks will definitely
take them out at scrum time after some bibles against
the spring box there and the year that scrum is
looking good now and fletching all we know it tight
head problem particulars outstanding scrummager degree on the other side
will do the job particularly well and Cody tar is
excellent between them and and off the bench. You know,
(06:41):
if you've got TOMARIGHTI, Williams, Tossi and Takyaho coming off
the bench against a potentially pretty weak Scotland second front row,
I think that's when it could get a little bit
ugly for the Scottish.
Speaker 3 (06:53):
So you see the same kind of set up in
the front row, same guy's coming off the bench in
the same guys.
Speaker 5 (07:00):
Starting absolutely and I would imagine that they'll go with
the Lord and Holland again as well. I think the
backline might be the one air of a buddy Barrett
took a few knots. Whether they give Demach a start
there that will perhaps be the interesting thing. And then
if they do that, do they put Body on the
bench or do they have Reuben Love covering first home mate?
And that's one of the issues for them only having
(07:21):
taken two out and out tens. Is Body getting a
bit dinged up against Ireland? Does he need a rest?
But if you just go to the philosophy that we're
going to put our best team out there for these
three tests, and then they also ran sort of boys
get a run against Wales and I think Body will
be starting on the ten Jersey.
Speaker 1 (07:40):
Use and a Benion. It's Sports Fix with Dancy Waldegrave, Super.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Rugby Pacific's being fantastic. I think we can all agree
that the energy has changed around the promotion of the sport,
the attitude of the sport, that rulings of the sport
everything around the competition. As a direct result, we're an
amazing tournament. I'm sure non Crusaders fans will say, no,
he didn't. It was awful with same old, same old,
(08:06):
But that was a challenging company petition. So we're looking
forward to twenty twenty six to see exactly what Super
Rugby Pacific have got tucked up there sleep Today the
teams were announced, the squads were announced. They staggered the
squad announcement so they didn't get lost in the mayra
of each other, and now we know who was there.
(08:29):
Here's the issue. Nothing changed. It was the same as
last time around. And what I've seen of Super Rugby
Pacific and the management there is they want to increase eyeballs, participation, excitement,
all of that. How can they do that with the
squad naming. Oh they can drag it kicking and screaming
(08:49):
out of its comfortable space and they can change the
whole philosophy behind it squad naming. I know it's been
discussed before. I don't know how comfortable Super Rugby is
with doing something bizarre and strange, but eight what about
a draft? Is it going to kill anyone to try
(09:10):
something new and different, so they keep the conversation going
in the off season. It gives something for fans of
franchises to look toward, to look forward to. It might
take some of the control away from nz R Super
Rugby Pacific. Does that matter, No, it doesn't. What needs
to happen is this competition needs to continue its evolution
(09:34):
in the current sporting market. It might not be a draft,
but I think the time is right for Super Rugby
Pacific to do something new, to challenge the norm and
to make squad naming an event as opposed to just
a series of press releases.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix end of
the Chamber, we go Jie great to hear from Jason
o'heller and he could play that player. He could play
man should have played a lot more for the All
Blacks than he did. But that's a discussion for another
spoken like a true well exactly exactly. I'm positive. I'm
positive on that. Let's talk All Blacks. Scotland, as we know,
(10:14):
are the opponent at Edinburgh, Murrayfield and Edinburgh the early
hours of Sunday morning, New Zealand time. We know there
are some injury and forced changes coming when the All
Blacks team are named later on tonight. No Scott Barrett,
no Jordi Barrett. Is it as simple in the second
row dars as Josh Lord and Fabian Holland? And is
it as simple and midfield as Quintu Pire moving in
(10:37):
one and Lester fighting a nukel coming in basically the
way they finished last week?
Speaker 3 (10:41):
Well, when you look at the back line, what primarily
is the position that Quintu Pire plays second five eighth?
There you go, what does Lester firing and nuku do?
He's on the wing and he'll probably be able to
cover that as well. And he also plays set a
three quarter and he told me when I had him
on a week or so ago it doesn't mind running
(11:01):
around the loose ford either, So you'd think it would
be as far as the lock. My only issue here
is we've got England next week and that they're they're
a worry. Okay, how much more do you want to
ride Fabian Holland ahead of a match like that, because
he's a lot of minutes a.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Lot of good point. The only thing I would say
to that is if you don't play him, then you're
either going in with a very very raw locking partnership
of Josh LRD and Sam Dowry, or you're using some
a penny female in a position which isn't his preferred position.
I'm okay with Fabi and holland you know, starting this one.
It might be that he comes off and Sam Dowry
and Josh LAWD do you know, form a partnership later
(11:43):
in the game. And let's hope I keep our fingers
crossed obviously that Scott Barrett is back next weekend.
Speaker 3 (11:49):
Yeah, I think, yeah, maybe forty minutes, maybe a bit longer,
but like he's a huge moss of a man, and
I expect he's got a giant ticker as well, so
maybe he can play right the way through. But the
coaching staff have to consider that this is four on
the bounce. There's not a lot of time to even between,
so they've got to bring that in. But I think
(12:12):
you with me and this one, Jason raises finally, I
think settled on the best team he can pick, and
I'd presume he'd like to go take them to count
the injury issues with what he's found out so far
towill the end of the championship and at the start
of this tour.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
The only caveat das I'll throw into that discussion is
in the loose forwards, where I thought Wallace Satiti was
terrific off the bench last week. We know how good
he was last year in his breakout season for the
All Blacks. I just wonder, you know, whether there'll be
a temptation to finish or start the way they finished
last week in these positions as well. What say you
(12:50):
about a Satiti, Savia Larkai loose forward trio.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
It's a very bruising position they all are, and we
know we can flick them around between all of those
various puzzies in that back three wonderful because of the
nature of the confrontational aspect of that. A guy like well,
I'm going to go back to well and again Carriffe
maybe doesn't have a ride and maybe one of those
(13:17):
powerhouses has a cup of tea and a lie down.
I mean that might be asking too much, but is
that out on the question.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Nope, not at all. And Race has showing as well
as showing a loyalty, he's shown an ability on occasion
to surprise us with a selections. Yeah, I'm not up
with Simon Parker I like the guy. I like the
big body that he brings. I just wonder whether he's
absolutely seized his opportunity. I'm not saying that, you know
that he's had three or four test matches and that's
(13:46):
it for Simon Parker. I just wonder whether he might
quite like Razer to have a look at Wallace a
tit and that six jumper where he was so good
last year. It wouldn't be a surprised to me he does.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, what he's done that is tweaked, But I think
we've got the general framework of what he wants. But
lucky in the fact we've got some tremendous lucies. It's
how they are juggled.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
We'll find out tonight. Team named about nine o'clock to
night in New Zealand time from memory, so we can
break it all down tomorrow now. Also tonight second t
twenty of the five match series between the black Caps
and the West Indies. The West Indies last night defending
the lowest ever total successfully at Eden Park one sixty
four for six they scored restricted US to one fifty
(14:28):
seven for nine g dus. We didn't bat very well well.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
When I say we met Santana set the place on
file and watching right to the end, because I'm a
tragic when it comes to cricket. I can't I there
to going what am I watching? We're going to be
absolutely embarrassed. And then suddenly Mitt Santana took his driving
iron out of his back and started smashing go over
the bark. That was stunning, but what it does. You
(14:53):
would observe this, It looked okay, and then suddenly the
whole the wheels fell of all of the rest of them,
including guys like Mitchell, which you wouldn't expect that was
an opportunity might miss because they're only like twelve runs
shy at the end, wasn't it? So all they need
is one or two more players to actually stand up
be counted. I'd expect they'd be embarrassed by that.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
I totally agree. I look at some of the shots
that were played. I mean Michael Bracewell's shot. He's a
very very good cricketer, and I don't know what that
was on a rampant, you know, and getting caught behind. He'll,
I'm sure be stung by what happened. And you're so
right to us all at Nita was a couple of
other guys to hang around for a bit because Mitchell
Santner made the highly improbable almost possible with the way
(15:34):
he was smashing, and he had eight boundaries in the
space of nine balls at one stage there last night,
as you would have been watching, I was, and I
was thinking, this is actually that, this is possible? Well
four six, four single four or forty.
Speaker 3 (15:48):
It was astonishing, and he looked healthy when he missed
shots too, riding on wall. But I don't expect the
rest of the team to provide so little with the
bat this time out and stung. But hey, how good
is it? This apparently is the worst worst in these
stirring team he's been here and they rocked up and
they beat us first time up, so this is good
(16:08):
for the series.
Speaker 2 (16:09):
Jason, totally right us and and T twenty is their
favorite format. You know, they used to strike fear into
the heart of red ball opponents in the eighties and nineties,
but now they're very much a white ball proposition. And yeah,
they're just like we are.
Speaker 4 (16:22):
There.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
They're heading towards a World Cup next year where they'll
have designs on going deep into that tournament. So yeah,
Game two tonight before a couple of games in Nelson
Sonny Nelson gets some international cricket on Sunday.
Speaker 3 (16:33):
One thing I can't quite stomach or understand or perceive
when I watch the West Indies says how big holders?
It still doesn't make any seats looking to go What
are you doing up there? I said, we'll go away
till he walks past him. And he walked past. Mitchell
sent He's not the smallest character in the world and
he just dwarfed them Like wow, piece.
Speaker 4 (16:57):
Of work, that bloke.
Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, giant of a man. He'll be an action again
tonight as well. The black Caps are number two in
the five match series underway at Eden Park. Tonight ran
callter past seven. That's us in the Chamber today.
Speaker 3 (17:10):
Dissecting the sporting agenda.
