On Sports Fix with Jason Pine and D'Arcy Waldegrave for 29th May 2025, the Crusaders finish their regular season with a match against the Brumbies in Canberra. Crusaders utility Chay Fihaki joins the podcast ahead of that to discuss how they're preparing for that, knowing they've already booked their place in the playoffs.

And the lads are in the chamber to discuss Patrick Tuipulotu deciding to stay on in New Zealand.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks ed B
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix. Howard by News Talk said.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Be hello there and welcome into the Sportspex podcast and
association with G. J. Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted
home build up. It is Thursday, May twenty nine. Good
to be behind the mic again with my good friend.

Speaker 3 (00:33):
Darcy Wadergrave good a pineyer. I saw a picture of
you on social media sheepestly holding an autand E FC
jersey with your name on it. Now, I know as
a commentator you've got to sit right down the middle,
but that must have hurt just at Weaver considering where
they come from.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Right well, Also, when am I going to wear that?
I feel like there'll be very limited opportunities for me
to wear an AUCKLANDFC shirt, either here in Wellington where
I reside, or even when I'm up in Auckland, because
you can't if you're doing a commentary of the game,
for example, where the kits of one of the teams
you're commentating. But it was a very nice gesture from

(01:11):
Auckland FC and I appreciated it. Greatly. One of the
chamber topics today is the fact that a number of
those players have found their way into the team of
the season. We can kick that around. Who are you
hearing from today in terms of an interview a chat
The winger.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Out of the Crusaders outfit to signed to the end
of next year, Chafee Harcky and he's very much in
the cross here is of Scott Robertson, so how he
develops what he's learned as well under the resurgent Rob
Penny interested in that with JP Harckey definitely a guy
in the future.

Speaker 2 (01:43):
Looking forward to that. Today's latest sports news as well.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
And also a huge thanks to GJ. Gardner Holmes, our
show sponsor and his Ellen's most trusted home builders and
they're friends of the podcast. Right, let's do it.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
In other news, Let's get going with a look at
some of the big sports stories around today. Blues rugby
captain Patrick Twey Poloto has re signed with New Zealand
Rugby for three more years. He's played one hundred and
twenty one times for the Blues as well as fifty
two All Blacks Test matches.

Speaker 4 (02:13):
Quite conflict, I think family of the big heart in
terms of got a little unstarting school next year and
I couldn't want to be away for that. I think
results are in the blues this year meant that a
few thoughts from my hands and ultimately just not be
really the lead.

Speaker 2 (02:26):
New South Wales coach Laurie Daily is backing Nathan Cleary
as his first choice goalkicker despite a wayward night of
the tea, and they're opening eighteen to six State of
Origin one over Queensland and Brisbane. Last night the Penwrith
playmaker successful with just one attempt from five.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
I don't know Nathan that that well because I haven't
worked with him, but just to see the way that
he prepares, I know it'd be.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Burnie and I know that he won't be a lot
of any enter here.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
We're on and Eazac del Toro has extended his advantage
on cyclings at zero totalia from twenty six to forty
one seconds after a win on stage seventeen twenty four
hours ago, he sucked down Tottle's zero dream was dying.
It is very much now live. And Chicken Piva Mexico
piv chtof.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
Bevera e Sac.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sports Fix with Jason n
and Dusty Walter Grave Dan.

Speaker 3 (03:23):
It's a big hello now to Shay Fee hockey outside
bag for the Crusaders and at Canterbury and a man
who's had a taste of all black action being called
up to the squad last year. He joins us now
ahead of the Brumbies fixture. Good a Shay, how are you.
How's life looking like over in the Australian Capital Territories?
Treating you good?

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (03:44):
That's awesome weather here in the Capitol and a little
bit chilly in the morning, but nice days here.

Speaker 3 (03:51):
Well, you live in Christis, you can't complain about it
being cold in the morning. You'd only know that too well,
wouldn't you.

Speaker 5 (03:57):
Yeah, obviously I think is a nice hot place, but
not right here in the capital. So nice and doing
it well. You've got rippin.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Well, you've got a big game, haven't you tomorrow night?
I say big. But in the general wash up, you're
all guaranteed semi final positions. You're all going to qualify
and go through. I'm talking of course the Chiefs, yourselves
and the Brumbies. What does that bring to the game

(04:28):
or take from the game, you think without that extra
jeopardy added in.

Speaker 5 (04:35):
Oh, it's obviously nice knowing that we've got extra week
for next week, but still game, and we were fully
prepared to yeah coming in and win, and it's still
preparing like it's a game. So yeah, looking forward to
all the boys are ready to go, and yeah, I
can't wait.

Speaker 3 (04:54):
You'd be fairly fizzing after what happened last week actually
having to watch that that was tight. We know you
can't right the Highlanders off, but you think you guys
be a little see, a little passy even about what
happened last week. What's the the general feeling the theory
been around what went well? You won, but what didn't

(05:17):
quite work for you all?

Speaker 5 (05:21):
Oh yeah, obviously it wasn't on the field, but yeah,
we knew that the Highlanders were going to so it
at us. Obviously it's a big game for Highlanders and Crusaders. Yeah,
we were expecting that things obviously didn't go away, but
obviously happy with the win. We'll take it when any

(05:42):
of the other weeks. Yeah, de sactly, you get you.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Get chanced back and again shay to play and you
only want to play, And are you looking forward to
national representation because you have been looked at by Scott
Robertson who you've Yeah, I'm sure you know because you
were a melv last year. You got dragged into the squad,
didn't you. That gave you a taste or a teaser

(06:07):
to possible abilities.

Speaker 5 (06:10):
Yeah. I was got a little taste of it last year.
But at the moment I just want to, yeah, be
well for this team and if we get the result
they were they were looking for obviously to get to
the finals and stuff. But yeah, the best things first
is obviously played well for the Crusaders and be a

(06:31):
good teammate.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
Yeah, you've signed to the end of next to you
to stay with Canterbury and to stay with the Crusaders.
Beyond that, you don't know. Ideally you'd like to go
on longer you and negotiations a toll. Where does that
sit as far as your commitment And he's in on
Rugby Live Show.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Yeah, I haven't really thought that far ahead, obviously taking
the thinking it year by years and have really thought
that far. I'll just get that hand hand itself with
obviously the way I pay for the next couple this
year next year, So you're not really looking to fire ahead.

Speaker 3 (07:12):
It wasn't a great year last year. There's an understatement
for the Crusaders. The coach Rob Penny was retained, which
was which is a good move in my opinion. It's
plainly working for you. What you can see where you're standing,
what's changed dramatically between last season and this season.

Speaker 5 (07:32):
Yeah, obviously a lot of learning from last year, and
I think the Boys just obviously took that on board.
And yeah, really now their Officeason and our connections of
the team and we want to get to this year.
So yeah, little proud of the boys efforts this year

(07:53):
and turning it around. And yeah, we're obviously looking forward
to the game this weekend.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
And yeah safe Hackey, great to meet you. Thanks very
much for your time. I'm sure we'll do it again soon.
You go well, go.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
Hard, Yes, thank you sort of sex.

Speaker 3 (08:12):
There is no doubt that the State of Origin Series
is the highlight of the year when it comes to
rugby league. There's also no doubt about the fact it
leaves most of the best players out in the cold,
the best PACIFICA players, the best New Zealand players, none
of whom can qualify for New South Wales. Or Queensland.

(08:33):
So they stagger the series, they tear apart some teams,
they give other teams buys, they bring players back from
a midweek Origin game to try and compete again. It's
manifestly unfair right across the entire origin period. Andrew Webster,
coach of the Warriors, said, look, this can't carry on.
What are the competition in the world basically cannibalizes their

(08:58):
own product in such an important time. Well, they don't,
do they So what can be done about it? Well,
if you're leaving it in the hands of the NRL,
you'll know that the NRL couldn't care less about the
other nations. It's all about them. That's cool, that's their competition.
They can do it. But there must be moves made
by the other nations involved in rugby league to force

(09:21):
them to change the window and make this period a
time for all nations to celebrate the wonderful game of
rugby league. Whether it is Samoa, Tokola fig in New Zealand,
South Thine and New Zealand's North nineand some of Britain,
it doesn't matter. If there's a will, there's a way,

(09:42):
and there must be a will to make the origin
period more acceptable not only to the fans but to
the players as well, because, let's face it, the best
players in the NRL half of them are Aussies, the
rest of them aren't.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
End of the Chamber we go. Interesting to hear from cha,
Fee Harkey, as you say you'd signed until the end
of next year. That brings them up short of the
Rugby World Cup. Patrick tweep belot too today announced that
he will be staying with New Zealand Rugby for another
three years, which takes them beyond the next Rugby World Cup.
I just had a quick look at who is yet
to sign or re sign rather with New Zealand Rugby

(10:25):
beyond the end of twenty twenty six. In other words,
who haven't we definitely got for the next Rugby World Cup?
Interesting to me? Does Tyrell Lomax and Ethan de Groot,
probably widely regarded as our two starting props, are only
signed until the end of twenty twenty six. You'd want
to get them locked up, wouldn't you.

Speaker 3 (10:44):
Well, the oils all around young fussy Josh and what
he's doing now that he's filled in the gap that
offered the fussy asn't held, so there is opportunity. But yeah,
surprising because Trolloomax terylomax excuse me, is an absolute weapon. Ethan,
the group runs a wee bit hot and cold. I

(11:04):
wouldn't tell him that face to face though, of course,
but scary, but you can understand maybe why that works.
But I'm sure behind the scenes they're doing whatever they
can because you know what, do they say, your pack
one's you're the game. They're the ones you to look at.

Speaker 2 (11:16):
Absolutely And if we go to the other end of
the numeracle Scarle and a rugby team, I find that
Severa Reese and Caleb Clark are still get to sign
beyond twenty twenty six. We know Mark Talaya is leaving,
so there's another couple of guys who you'd be wanting
to sew up or actually dars are there. You know,
some pretty good wingers coming through and it's a position

(11:37):
that always seems to have strength in New Zealand Rugby.

Speaker 3 (11:39):
There every aren't they, And let's not forget there's an
absolute monstrous weapon coming back from France and he will
slide straight into any team that raiser Robertson puts together
or we've missed him enormously, but when he returns, that
is definitely something for the next World Cup. And I'm
talking about Les knokel there you go, look at that

(12:01):
like a bought one mate and he's huge. But yeah,
by us everywhere, and you can see it in Super
Rugby every week, our guys waving their hands up, going
I'm here, hello, I'm good. Anyway, how old of those
two guys, they must be twenty seven plus, so that's
probably curtains for that's.

Speaker 2 (12:14):
What's your Each twenty seven is a winger. It's like, hey, thanks,
thanks very much, it's been fun, but we're going to
go to the next lot. One thing I do note
is that Patrick Tuopolo too now adds himself to a
list of lock forward to us signed himself, Scott, Barrett,
tupor Vai, also Sam Dowry and Fabian Holland too has
yet to play for the All Blacks, but almost certainly
well this year. I don't think we're going to have

(12:35):
any trouble with lock forwards for the next World Cup.

Speaker 3 (12:37):
Task Well, there's always a whole sumwhere, isn't it. I
mean you can't fill everything out, but as we've always
talked about, you get there the older or the more
mature players who disappear overseas to take the money that
gives press roots sorry fresh shoots a chance to growing up.
And we're not sure of that. I mean, you look
at the first fifteen rugby that's on Sky Sports TV.

(12:57):
Don't mean that there are some astonishing young players who
are already all hanging out to be all blacks here?

Speaker 2 (13:03):
Yeah, absolutely right. Well, I think you know, as I say,
just to summarize before we move on looking at the list,
I think New Zealand Rugby have done a pretty good
job of sewing up. You know, some key players across
pretty much every area of the park. Sort out your
front rowers and a couple of your outside backs, and
all of a sudden we're looking very good for the
twenty twenty seven Rugby World Cup. Hey, Auckland FC couldn't

(13:23):
get it done last weekend in the semi finals of
the A League. They won't play in the grand final.
But today i'll see the PFA Team of the Season
has been released. This is voted for by all of
the players who play in the A League. They vote
for their best players across the season. Alex Paulson, Francis Devreisa,
Roki Saki and Louis Vastrata are all in the starting

(13:44):
eleven and add Gijumo Mai and Nando Pinaker into the reserves,
and Steve Corriker has been voted Coach of the Year.
I mean, I know they'd probably rather be playing in
the Grand Final, but it's a great indication, isn't it,
of just what impact, what positive impact, Auckland FC have
had on the A League in their first season.

Speaker 3 (14:03):
I take a lot of these awards with a grain
of salt, but in this circumstance, because this is voted
for by the players who play the game, So to me,
this has a whole lot more relevance than other awards
that are giving out. That's a fair thing to say,
isn't it. They're in the trenches with these blokes all
the time. They know who's good, they know exactly who
they want to play with or don't want to play against.

Speaker 2 (14:25):
Absolutely right, And I often think in an awards night
at the end of a season, players player of the
Year should be the one that is handed out last.
He's almost the most illustrious, right. Look, if we if
we if we internally hear it, Z'd be voted for
Broadcaster of the Year, and then we all there was
a panel of independent judges who did the same. I'd
be far more stoked to be in the reckoning for

(14:48):
the one that was chosen for by the other broadcasters,
wouldn't you.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
Well, this is coming from a guy that's won the
last two Sports Broadcasters of the Year of the New
Zealand Radio Awards, so.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
I mean a few give won a few of those
as well as.

Speaker 3 (15:00):
Asked recency bias, my friend, recency bias. But it's right
your peers. I think the opinions of your peers is
always so much more valuable than anybody else. As I said,
we're in the trenches with these.

Speaker 2 (15:12):
People, absolutely right. So well done to those at Auckland
FC who have gained inclusion. And it was a big
night as well at the official awards night, which is
the one voted for by other people as well. Steve
Cricker Coach of the Year, Alex Paulson Goalkeeper of the
Year and Save of the Year and Francis Devreee actually
voted for by the fans. There's another one does if
your fans Player of the year. I think you've done
a pretty good job too, haven't you.

Speaker 3 (15:33):
You know that's fair enough to get something positive out
of the port arm who'd be very disappointed after what
happened over the weekend, but they can be proud of
what they've done. You a loose one to win one,
as they say, So it's let's get a Monks next year.
Although the Phoenix, I'm sure I'll have something to say
about that after a rather tumultuous season themselves.

Speaker 2 (15:53):
I certainly hope so from a Wellington Tonian's point of view,
I would certainly be hoping. So that is us in
the chamber today.
