Follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
It be a welcome to one and all. My name
is at Darcy Walter Grave. It's Tuesday, thirteenth of May
twenty twenty five. Welcome on to the Sports Fix podcast.
And thanks very much to GJ. Gardner Holmes, new Zealand's
most trusted home builder, for their engagement in this podcast
coming up in the next fifteen twenty odd minutes. Look,
(00:42):
we got no time allocated for this. We just talk
until we all get bored. We're going to be talking
with David Dome GM of the Phoenix. How on earth
did they ropeen Wrexham FC to come to town. I've
got some opinion on this day in history thirty years ago.
What a time that was for New Zealand sport and
(01:02):
of course New Zealand sailing. And joining us in the
chamber out of the New Zealander Herald, it's sports writer
Alex Powells. We toss around some of the big sports
stories of the day. That is our master plan. We
fully intend to get right amongth starting right here, right now,
on the fix in other news. Right, let's cut through
(01:27):
this spurn and go straight to the people who count.
Brian Fox were now elevated to the dizzying heights of
seventy one in the World Golf rankings. He's off now
to prowl the quail Hollow fairways in search of a major,
namely the PGA Championship. His opportunity arose after his playoff
wizardry at Mertle Beach. But nice, Brian, come on, Foxy
(01:52):
better than nice surely. Obviously getting in this week was
a nice Bonusy. Only way I was going to get
in was actually winning.
Speaker 3 (01:57):
So yeah, it's nice to be heading up there and
trying to prepare for another major.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
New Zella Metal Association boss Steph Bond has lend into
the eligibility debate, saying moving the the eight zed Premiership
until after Australia's Super League is probably the best fit.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
I think that's probably a really good outcome for the
players because that would then allow them to maximize obviously
their short careers, but to maximize their earnings from being
able to play in both competitions.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
And hurricanes Rake and co skipper Asafa Olmua played down
the effect of the COVID bird that swept into camp
and cracked all over the team. It was an early
strike though, so no worries. It was more of a
funny of the week.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
So I was good.
Speaker 2 (02:40):
So you starting to like a remote training byselves in
a fact incident to reaffect customers. The Gains take on
the Landers on Friday and night, golf, netball, rugby? What
more do you want? That's rhetorical, by the way, unless
you want to shout at the podcast, would you probably
do sometimes.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
New Scanavillion It's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldegrave.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Thirty years today since News Zealand did well the seemingly
impossible on the water, there was a wonderful day in
New Zealand sporting history. And regardless of where it's gone
since then, this is a day we'll all look back
on with huge pride. I distinctly remember where I was
(03:28):
when Team New Zealand won the America's Cup and PJ.
Montgomery uttered that legendary line and the America's Cup is
now New Zealand's Cup as it happens. I was a
real estate agent at that time. Yeah, true, people would
trust me to sell their most valuable possession. I was
at an open home in a cheap suit on Memorial
(03:51):
ab in christ Church, watching it on their TV while
people brows the house. Strange that I was selling second
hound houses, but you do the weirdest things in the
strangest times. It was an amazing day, I shouted at
the television. The clients at the open home looked to
me like there was something wrong with me, but I
did not care. This day we'll go down in sporting
(04:15):
history as one of the great days. So Peter Blake,
you absolute star. Rest easy. What you did for New
Zealand will never be forgotten, and neither will that call. PJ.
Montgomery right up there in the iconography with a call
like that, What a day, what a journey, what a
(04:37):
sensational America's Cup. If only we could get it back
here again, because it still is New Zealand's Cup. Last
time I checked.
Speaker 1 (04:48):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Darcy Waldegrave.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Good evening, David Evening, Darthy, what a great day for yourselves.
It's official Wrexham R are coming. That's cause for celebration
and what, let's face it, David it's been a pretty
average year for the club. Yere.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
Yeah, it's great for the club, it's great for the fans,
it's great for the city, and it's great for the
country to have a club. So you know, it's not
a Premier League club by by standing, but it's a
Premier League club by brand and and you know, to
have an international superstars like these guys come out and
you know, bring their TV cameras and the Disney Plus
(05:28):
streaming platform. I mean, I just hope, you know, I
hope that the crowds turn out and they set out
sky Stadium and it's.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Going to look great on the on the.
Speaker 3 (05:36):
Disney Plus show and makes the city look great.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Are you going to hand out Phoenix jerseys for everyone
who turns up?
Speaker 3 (05:43):
Well, we certainly want to have a presence. I mean,
you got to. I keep forgetting Well, we're actually it's
Rex and versus the Phoenix, So Phoenix fans should turn
up in Phoenix get Now. I know they might want
to turn up and Rex and Gain. I'm sure there's
lots of people wearing reck and shirts that would be
quite nice. But we still want our fans to turn
up and support us, and they're making a real event.
I mean, that's the thing, right, this is an event.
(06:04):
It's not a sports game. It's going to be a
bit of an event. So that's that's the exciting.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
Did this fall into your lap, David or did you
go out chasing it?
Speaker 3 (06:12):
Well, it's actually through TG ticket Tech.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
So we've of nine g F.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
Jones, who is the CEO of ticket Tech in Australia,
for quite some time, and we've always talked about bringing
out an English Premier League team.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Now Reckcell, I.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
Guess you say they're not EPL yet, but they're on
their way. But this was the next best thing. And
while it's taken a couple of years to get here,
we finally got there and you know, couldn't be more
thrilled that. I mean, not only do they bring that brand,
but they bring, like I say, all the TV cameras
and it's going to be exciting to have, you know,
these sort.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Of buzz around the city in July. What are the
chances that someone in the New Zealand media will ask
one of the movie stars what do you think of
New Zealand?
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Yeah? I would give it very short of at the
TB probably a dollar one.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
So in order for the media ask stupid questions of
the owners. Are they actually coming down to this? The
movie stars Robin Ryan.
Speaker 3 (07:02):
After the question about tickets and hospitality, that's the second
question everyone is asking, is Rob and Ryan coming down
and get to see Deadpool in real in real life?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
We actually don't know.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
I guess I would say we won't know right up
until the last minute, depending on what these schedules are.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Like.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
What we do know is that the entire production crew
of Rio ExHAM is coming down and that, you know,
all things being equal, hopefully that there'll be a lot
of New Zealand and the next one of the next
upcoming episodes, and you know, I hope you fans can
be part of that. But yeah, as for the owners,
I mean, we'll certainly try and put the requests out
and get the invites out and try and conjole them
(07:37):
to come, but you know, it's one of those things
that that definitely is out of our hands.
Speaker 2 (07:41):
But it would be how great would it be to
have those guys here, Tiger or Jason MAMOI a listen,
they could put a good word in New Zealand's a
great place. All these celebrities like that look Brad Pitt's
here at the moment right, Well, they're all bits.
Speaker 3 (07:54):
You know, Tiger as close with Ryan Reynolds. We know that.
And you know, there are people in the Wellington region
that are quite good at making films and know how
to do that. And I think there might be a
few connections between a few people in Wellington and Marvel
Phone Marvel Studios as well.
Speaker 2 (08:12):
So look, I think.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
If the city is going to be using all its
powers to try and get them to come, So why New.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Zealand, why are they coming specifically to the Phoenix.
Speaker 3 (08:21):
Well, I think they. I mean they're obviously doing their
offseason tour and they're you know, they they have taken
it on the road before. And this is a part
of the world that is you know, good football countries
play a good standard of football, will put on a
good test for them. They know that it's it's culturally easy,
English speaking, very safe. They know the contracts are what
(08:43):
they're written on, and they know they've got fans down here.
And look, I don't get obviously get the numbers for
Disney Plass, but I would assume that their TV show
does very.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
Well in this part of the world.
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Two good clubs in Australia and a good club in
New Zealand, and they've got three really good games as
a preseason tour, so a lot of took the boxes
for them. And again I'm guarantee that compared to other
parts of the world, it'd be very easy to bring
down here.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
And play some games. What's it costing you, David, Well,
We're We're just a high gun in this game.
Speaker 3 (09:11):
We're not the promoter that's with tug ticket Tech. We're
just turning up and playing. But of course what we
are doing is pushing this as hard as we can
because we want our fans to turn up, we want
the city to turn up, we want the country to
turn up, to really showcase what we er can do
in terms of a sports event and a football sports
event specifically, and you know show that that you know,
rexam this year, then maybe another championship shide, maybe an
(09:32):
EPL side.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Next year, so the stadium will get paid by the promoters.
Do you get to skim anything offered or not? Really?
Speaker 3 (09:40):
I mean we're going to try and sell some shirts
on the game day. I where you can get the
negotiations with Rex and tidied up where they're happy for
us to sell some shirts.
Speaker 2 (09:49):
But as you know, since you we just get paid
in their parents feed and that's it. And when the
tickets go on sale, that's the kegs. I'd expect that, well,
you'd hope that there will be a lot of people
turning up because it's the one. It's the Cinderella story
in football in the last couple of years.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
It is.
Speaker 2 (10:04):
And if the.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
Request we've got today or anything to go by, they're
sort of running about the same as the semi final
last year when we got thirty five thousand. So we've
already had people bringing up asking for pre sales, asking
for hospitality. How do they buy this, how do they
get in quick? How do they get ahead of other people?
So there's a pre sale that's happening the next couple
of days for Phoenix members. So our current Phoenix members
(10:28):
or people that join the club will get a pre
sale on tickets for a couple of days, and then
there's a few other pre sales and then I think
a public one's on Friday, Friday lunchtime sometime run then
cool story.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Bro as they say, I'm sure we're going to have
a wonderful time and make the absolute most of it.
David Dome, general manager of Phoenix FC. We thank you
very much for your time.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Git In thanks us appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (10:52):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports Fix the
Chamber DAWs fly I opened the New's there from the
New Zealand Herald.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
It's sports writer mister Alex Pale. Good day to you, Alex.
Thanks very much for your time.
Speaker 5 (11:04):
Hey, thanks having me. I love how you managed to
a different intro every time. It never see Still amazing mate.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
I've got to keep myself entertained because if I'm not entertained,
will anyone else be entertained? And that again was another
rhetorical question. If you're out there shout at the radio,
shout at the podcast, don't shout at me. Interesting day
around world sport. When you look at the return of
the ip OL, now, plainly that could only happen if
India and Pakistan decided it was a good idea to
(11:30):
stop lobbing ordnance at each other. This is a constant,
this will keep going on. But does this makes sense
to you?
Speaker 5 (11:36):
I mean it's going to have to. There's so much
money at stake, with broadcast figures and all that that
they just sort of need to get these games and
just to actually have cricket.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
You're not trying to say that the IPL got on
there and told them to put down their arms.
Speaker 5 (11:49):
I don't know for that part of the world. If
that's what has actually happened, would you be surprised? Probably
has gone over gone lads.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Yeah, come on, it's cret It's much bigger than cash
me and look, obviously we're being slightly silly and it's
a very serious situation. It makes sense to nationally to go, look,
we can't do this anymore because clear present danger. If
you want to affect the heart of India or Pakistan,
what do you do? How about the sport now? Yeah,
absolutely no.
Speaker 5 (12:16):
So I mean I remember the story on Saturday morning
our time that all the Kiwi's had been told to
flee and get home as we're notf flee fleether wrong.
But they all got out of there, with the exception
of Mitch Sentner and Bevan Jacobs who were told to
stay because the Mombandians and new it was reseumming now
the detail from New Zealand Cricket and I've not spoken
to the Players Association yet.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Well, I spoke with Heath Mills on Friday night about that,
and it says been feverish phone calls because these guys
want out. We want to get them out.
Speaker 5 (12:41):
Yeah, but it sounds like it's now going to be
up to players if they want to keep playing or not.
So the overseas players who left will be told we'd
like you to return, but if you don't, that's on you.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Well, it makes perfect sense. It's their livelihood for a
step more important, it's their their lives, not saying it
will be a disaster, but they've got a balances because
the history of New Zealand in Pakistan, even though it's
across the border, not great. So I can see why
people would be a little sensitive around.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
Yeah, I don't think anyone's going to be judged for
what they do from here. The IPL does have a
rule that if you pull out, you risk a two
year ban from the competition, which Shinglin's how he broke
god earlier this year. However, that was for different reasons
than safety reasons. It's even you know, it's meant to
resume on what Sunday morning our time, so even before that,
it's going to be washed the space like I imagine
there's going to be a few more twists in this tale.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
You'd think so. And when we hear back from the players,
have a chat with them and see what they made
of it, because it would have been absolutely terrifying. The
goal is around that horrible blast and Stephen flaming in
the light way back in the day and still cuts through.
It's extraordinary.
Speaker 5 (13:43):
Well, the players who got out of Pakistan, the air
base they left from was bombed a few hours after
they got out of there, So I mean that's terrifying.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Oh I know, wow, All in the name of sport,
let's move to something slightly lighter. Eh Rixham are coming
to town. Ah, how good is that?
Speaker 5 (13:57):
Yeah? Great if you love year old sports docks. But
I mean for football fans, the Phoenix need this one
as well.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
What they do. You'd like to have any pl But
they're as close as The acceleration up the ranks has
been nothing short.
Speaker 5 (14:13):
Of extraordins It's amazing what you do when you outspend
all of your competition by tenfold, isn't it, which Wrexham
have been able to do.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
No, No, it's not amazing at all. That's called the
EPL or English football altogether, no sports sport on it.
Speaker 5 (14:26):
Okay, fine, It does always make me laugh that Rexham
had done as the slate rags to Richard store. And
you look at what their outlayers on transfers and player
wage isn't it's so much higher than riches though not
their riches, No, but I think it's great. I mean
anything that builds interested in football. Like we've spoken on
this podcast before that New Zealand is a football country.
It just perhaps doesn't know it, you know, and we've
seen that with Auckland FC.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
That's your research mine. You don't reckon well, I note
you might be the way the immigrants it's a horror
ward isn't immigrants, but diaspora, I think is the do
you go well from from England and from every other place.
It is definitely lifting And you're right the way that
Auckland FC have accelerated that and started selling all their
games out they are out there. It just hasn't been
(15:09):
sorted previously. Let's not talk about the Auckland teams of
years gone by a minute science for the Knights in
the Kingdom, No lea, it's not. And so they're coming
and what do you expect. There's nothing on it. It's not
a competition match. But will it sell out? Is it
that big?
Speaker 5 (15:25):
I think it will. I think there's enough of a
sport entertainment crossover with the Netflix. It's not Netflix, is
it it's Disney? Is it Disney?
Speaker 2 (15:31):
Yes? Disney? Whoever makes it? Doc over? I lost control.
I don't know anymore. The other day I was getting
rid of all of my subscriptions on it. What am
I paying money to not watch anything for?
Speaker 5 (15:39):
So there's enough cross over there that rexmr in the mainstream,
like then you had the Ryan Reynolds and the Rob
Mackleenny factor into it as well, that people are going
to get around it. We know when Jason Pine, our colleague,
broke the story initially there was a lot of interest
about where it would go, Aukland or Wellington, and Wellington
have managed to grab it somehow.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Well. It's a relationship between the promoter and David Dome
for a long time. That's how it came about after
talking to him, and apparently the interesting tickets is huge,
but just as big as the interested in Rob and
Ryan actually coming as well. More people are on that
tip too. I understand it'll be a party atmosphere because
there's nothing on it. It'll be a lot of fun.
Speaker 5 (16:16):
How fun would be paying a football team? Like I know,
like financially it's crippling.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
Is that fun? Well?
Speaker 5 (16:22):
I mean, if you've got enough money, you know what's
difference between a billion and two billion?
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Well? I no, no, fair enough. I get that something's going
to happen when you start making a whole lot of money,
not that you'll make it here.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
Thank you for saying if not when?
Speaker 2 (16:33):
Yeah, okay, fine, or I'm just being a realist on
that one. Hey, let's just touch on one formula one
thing before we go. One Pablo Montoya, who wants your
opinion around Liam Lawson?
Speaker 5 (16:44):
Do you want to give context door? Do you want
me to?
Speaker 2 (16:46):
Yeah? You give contacts?
Speaker 5 (16:47):
So one Publa Montoya? So you would have remember he
drove for Williams and McLaren has said that he wouldn't
be surprised if Lawson gets sacked for the second time
in the same season, which I don't get, Like, he's
not red Bull for there, He's never been read Buller
for there. It doesn't know how the team works. I
don't think Red Bull have any other drivers, even if
they want to sack Lemwilson. They're not going to chuck
out with them, bladd and there with like five F
two races under his belt, you know.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
Just it's all about the fact that he made a
fool of all the other drivers in the trs here
in New Zealand because it's our hot bed for It's
too early, isn't it.
Speaker 5 (17:18):
Oh look, I think other than Land will be an
F one driver like that, So I don't think that's
in doubt. If it's as early as next show, wouldn't
be surprised either. It's just gonna be where that where
he goes. If it's a you know, a few Casinota
leaves Red Bull, then who goes into that seed that
leaves a seat at racing balls that you know Lin
Black would go into.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Everybody. Everybody is under pressure, all the rookies are under pressure.
You've got to, let's say it, drive to survive because
if you don't, you can't write so much.
Speaker 5 (17:42):
To write that down, that's quite good.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
