(00:42):
Henry around the pressure of Eden Park and that ridiculous record.
How much does this crush or affect the coaches and
the teams before they roll on to the Garden of
Eden And debuting in the chamber is Winston Llworth. He's
the big boss man of sport at the n Z

(01:04):
Herald and we'll talk about what will be a crazy
week in sports journal because it's quite a big game
coming up on Saturday at Eden Park. That's our plan,
College's do it.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
In other news.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
In the vocal Vagaries of Sport Today, is he isn't he?
Will he get picked off?

Speaker 4 (01:24):
Flict.

Speaker 2 (01:25):
Springbok coach Rassi Arrestmus is unsure of the risk the
reward around the possible return of inspirational Skipper Cia COMESI bringing.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
Back one game to early much is bugger of six
seven weeks and the emotional decision, and it's one that
we haven't play final US.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
So the hard set plan, but the mindset exeat the Tactics.

Speaker 2 (01:50):
Skipper is bucking the trend. Unlike most of our teammates,
Erica Peterson is not fleeing the premiership winning team. The
pastures Afar Paris Petera is staying put hand the cantabs
of lurd Ossie goal shoot Tali bell Gardle so the
athletes leaving. Erica thinks the group vibration is still strong.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
We've got a great culture at the Tactics, so no
matter who comes into it, I know that they'll thrive
in our environment. And I'm really excited for the rest
of the team to get announced because I think we've
got some exciting players.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
And the Wellington Phoenix is still waiting for the upcoming
Oceania Professional League to respond around the decision to lead
the Knicks out of the new competition. Fellow A league
is the team AKFC RM as well as Canterbury United GM.
David Dome said, the meeting is scheduled.

Speaker 5 (02:44):
But.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
Ending the results of that, we will then take up
our right to me to take it further through a
number of channels, whether that be the Court of Arbitrations
offering other channel available to us in the vision. And
that's the value of voices on the Fix.

Speaker 3 (03:00):
U s and Bedim. It's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldegrave and.

Speaker 2 (03:05):
It's more Welcome to the Sports Fix podcast. Now to
former All Black coach, World Cup winning All Black coach
Sir Graham Henry get a ted how you're going very
well looking forward to the weekend And there's the biggest
understatement there is let's talk about the pressure this weekend.
You're a man who understands pressure. Pressure at Eden Park,

(03:27):
You've experienced it worked out for you in twenty eleven.
Different kettle of fish for Scott Robertson and his coaching team.
What are they dealing with right now? Where are their
heads at?

Speaker 6 (03:37):
Do you think ah were totally focused on trying to
help the team players best they can? So are we
trying to decrease the noise, get rid of the noise
and totally if they can and just focus on doing
their jobs the best they can.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
It's a matter of like you can't read the paper,
you can't listen to the radio. Or do you think
that all Blacks have probably already got that down and
they just don't they get into their own cocoon.

Speaker 6 (04:03):
Well we did that in till eleven had a massive difference.
Seven we smashed them, I think in the final. Now
he had no social media. I personally didn't read the
newspaper during that time or listen to the radio. You
just need to try and control your own environment so

(04:24):
that you can totally focus. If you're distracted, that's a negative.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
How do you think Razor is going to go about
coaching this team from what you've seen after what happened
and over in Argentina. Does he make urgent tweaks? Does
he change in number of the team as some of
the media have suggested, because you've got to be in
some state of salidity surely going into such a pressure fixture.

Speaker 6 (04:48):
I think there'll be one or two changes. There's you know,
usually one or two changes, and I think that there
be one or two changes for this game. I think
the result in Buenos Aires. Is probably a real positive
for the mental edge that the All Blacks will bring
to this particular fixture. Not that they not that they
needed to greater contest. How they got that's the biggest

(05:10):
game for a long long time. It's hugely exciting for
rugby people, and the city's buzzing and can't wait for
the game. So no, I think you know, all that's
coming off. Loss galanises them, gets them really focused. So
our guys will be the best they can be. Just

(05:31):
hopefully they're going to be good enough.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
So you don't have to delist these guys because they
understand the importance, have got of the energy around this game.
So going back to what you said before, just focusing
on the task at hand. These guys by default should
know this, shouldn't they They shouldn't get carried away with
the stuff on the outside, even though they well know
the record that's sitting right in front of them.

Speaker 6 (05:54):
I know, I think that I think they'll be good.
You know, the way they train during the week makes
a massive difference. You know, build from through from Sunday
through to the to the game on Saturday, and that's
a gradual process and you can't be playing the game.
Now you've got to be playing at seven o'clock on Saturday,
so you've got to keep the reins on. But now

(06:16):
they will be building all week and how they train,
and not only the guys the fifteen or the twenty
three are playing the game. It's the whole squad being
on the job, setting standards, putting pressure on the team
that's going to play. All of those sort of things
are very important in the build up to this test.

(06:38):
Like it's it's the ideal environment, isn't it. It's the
old enemy, the ol FO, huge respect for South Africa,
all black South Africa. It goes back one hundred odd years,
so you know it's it's it's brilliant. We just got
to make sure that the icing is right, the cake's being,

(06:59):
the cake is there. We're just going to make sure
that we do everything right to make sure it's the
perfect the perfect build up.

Speaker 2 (07:08):
So the baker, which is what I'm going to call
Scott Robertson from now on, and the attitude that he brings,
the consistency not necessary of the message, but the tone
of the message. Can you under overstate the importance of
how he holds himself.

Speaker 6 (07:26):
Oh, I think it's a collective Scott, He's obviously very important,
but it's a collective responsibility. There's a number of coaches,
there's a number of senior players who have been there
a long time, like Scott Barrett, and other leaders in
the team. You know, there's a collection of them, probably

(07:47):
half a dozen. Addie Savia, for example, who's the vice captain.
Jordy Barrett, he's another vice captain. But Blody Barrett, who's
the navigator of the team. You know, you can go.
There's probably half a dozen people who have to stand
up on the and lead together. Six captains is better

(08:11):
than one and so they will know that responsibility. And
Scott Robinson will have his his team of coaches who
all have to make sure they do the job as
best they can. Write through this week and their body
language is about we are good enough. We are going
to do this job.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldgrave anyone else.

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Frustrated with the attitude of some teams in the NRL,
the Penruth Panthers sat down pretty much their entire team.
Melbourn Storm rested a whole lot of key playmakers. The
canber Raiders will probably do it again this weekend, and
it wouldn't surprise me if the Warriors decided to sit
down some of their men who are in much need

(09:01):
of a rest before the finals series. This could be
called pragmatic, This could be called brilliant team management. This
could also be called dragging the game into disrepute. And
I'm amazed at the NRL, or more pointedly, the television broadcasters,
haven't made a bigger issue of this. This competition is

(09:24):
based on eyeballs. This competition is based on closely run
fixtures that are very difficult to predict the best of times.
By doing this, these clubs are making a mockery of
the NRL. They're making a mockery their competition. They're making
a mockery of people who put money on these games,

(09:45):
or people who attend these games, or people who don't
care either way who wins or loses. But they just
want to see the best of the best competing in
the NRL. And that's what the NRL should be. It's
not the best of the best. It's been a few
teams jocking for position. Really, guys, I'm amazed that broadcasters

(10:06):
haven't climbed on in and had a right crack at
what these coaches are up to. Surely you can do better.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
And it's big welcome into the Chamber now to debut
time time might add Winston Aldworth. Winston is the editor
of Herald Sporty joins us.

Speaker 7 (10:27):
Now Darcy Good to be here for a first time show.

Speaker 2 (10:31):
Winston planning. The focus this week for most radio stations,
TV stations, newspapers that are involved in sport is what's
happening on Saturday night at Eden Park where the fifty
gamer record is up to be broken, spring Box the
South Africa. I feel sorry for any other sport that's
attempting to launch or do anything this week. It's going

(10:53):
to get completely ignored.

Speaker 5 (10:54):
Well yeah, I mean there is so much other stuff on,
like Monza, Liam Lawson going and there after his teammate
bag points in the Netherlands, so there's Grand Prix interest,
the All Whites are playing, as you say, the Warriors
got manly, so there's so much going on. But there's
this thing that just sits over the sporting week and

(11:14):
it just sucks up all the energy and it takes
all the space, you know. I sometimes say to my
colleagues on the Herald Sports team, I say, guys, we
need two websites.

Speaker 7 (11:24):
We've just got so many yards.

Speaker 5 (11:26):
And I'm I'm sure we're not the only media organization
that feels this way in weeks like this, but I
kind of wouldn't have it any other way, Like.

Speaker 7 (11:32):
This is.

Speaker 5 (11:34):
Spring Box All Blacks games my personal drug.

Speaker 7 (11:40):
I grew up.

Speaker 5 (11:40):
I grew up just just totally buying into the mythology
of them, do you know what I mean? As a boy,
so sort of post eighty one, I remember the eighty
one two and then post eighty one, my dad telling
me these guys are when they come back, they're going
to destroy us.

Speaker 7 (11:56):
They're all ten foot tall and made of concrete. My
dad told me that, and I totally believed it.

Speaker 5 (12:00):
And then in ninety two we stuffed them, or didn't
stuff them, but we did them pretty well and have
mostly had the better of them, except for at that
really big wed tournament that comes around and in the
last few years, the.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
One that we basically build our entire legend on, that
one that net's face that the All Blacks have been
very powerful in between World Cups for a very long time.
They managed to convert a couple South Africa. Don't pay
any attention to that. It's like we'll pick a team
six months for the tournament. Watch us role. The threats
they have now very clear and very present. But the

(12:35):
big consideration we might not have an elbow. That was
the news out today. Until we've got the forearm and
fest of the back line and the huge bicep and
shoulders of the pack and we've got no elbow.

Speaker 7 (12:49):
Where's the connection?

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Yeah, how is this?

Speaker 7 (12:51):
Well?

Speaker 5 (12:52):
You know our Colie Elliott Smith had a great suggestion
last week and I think it's a good shout. He
said they should have been parachuting and Aaron Smith, who
was in country from from what we've gathered, and he
can play a bit you might have heard of.

Speaker 7 (13:06):
Him, will raise their eyebrows.

Speaker 5 (13:09):
But if you think we're down to like and this
isn't to run down the blokes who are going to
be wearing the jersey.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
The nice we've got right, but at the moment.

Speaker 7 (13:19):
Or something, so you know, Aaron Swith's around. But yeah,
but what.

Speaker 2 (13:22):
Would that achieve except maybe Seal might survive that night
the next queestion around that if they look I mean
like Trdle looked pretty good as well over the weekend,
maybe they drag him back any again. But you don't
want to disrespe Is it good though, because we might
actually lose this fifty streak, which is probably a good thing, because.

Speaker 5 (13:44):
Isn't Darcy hand in your passport get out of the
country to you to your point there about like, yeah,
what message would it send for the other half backs
if you Parashute and Aaron Smith, it would say you
get better at being half back, But it would also
just emphasize how important this one thing is.

Speaker 7 (14:05):
All black spring.

Speaker 5 (14:06):
Box games are somehow now in their own weird way,
a little bit bigger than World Cups. And perhaps I
only say that because I've won more World Cups than
we have, right and fully acknowledged that.

Speaker 2 (14:17):
But they look like one, and they weren't there, and
they keep telling us that this is an elevated rivalry,
no doubt, But.

Speaker 5 (14:24):
Even that's part of the thing. They should have been there,
but they had a part of it, and that's kind
of part of So when these teams take the field,
it's more than just eighty minutes of big blokes bashing
each other.

Speaker 7 (14:35):
There's politics, there's there's aircraft.

Speaker 5 (14:38):
There's Severn four sevens flying over or cisterns dropping flower bombs.
There's protests in the streets. There's just it's bigger than
a game in a way that the World Cups haven't
quite delivered other than ninety five when it was these two.

Speaker 2 (14:53):
Flower bombs.

Speaker 5 (14:53):
And I'd say too, I've got this kind of like
I love our World Cup wins, but for me, we
haven't really won one, or at least the last one.
We've won at home, we've won back to back, we've
won away from home. Those are big ticks. But we've
got to beat the box in a final. Until we
can beat the box in a final, there's just a
little there's a little asterisk to our World Cup legacy.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
What are you look at the Herald? Sorry? Once, because
there's a number of articles coming out that we can
point people towards. If one of a good old read
so when they're at the parbor at the ground, they
can be the most knowledgeable man in the room. What
do we focus on on the Herald this week?

Speaker 7 (15:29):
Sure? What do you want? Well? How long have you
got this? Listen?

Speaker 5 (15:33):
We've just gone live with the yarn right now. One
of our staff, Ben Francis, he did a great piece
during the week talking to He had John Kerwin, Frank Buntz,
John Tmo.

Speaker 7 (15:44):
Those blokes could play of it. And they were all
there in ninety four.

Speaker 5 (15:47):
And so you know, talking to talking to what's it
like to be in all black and to lose at
eden Parkers because there's been you.

Speaker 7 (15:53):
Know, probably one hundred couple hundred all.

Speaker 5 (15:56):
Backs since then who just don't know what that's like.
And also so today he's also talked to Flip Saint
Andre who was the last opposition captain to win at
eden Park And there's a quite actually tells a great yarn.
He's well, Pepsi's I'm sure he's not. Mbellishing has roll
in it. But he said, as the clock is running
down and they were behind, his boys are playing a

(16:17):
bit conservatively. So he put them and said, guys, I've
just got to go for this. He says, I'd rather
lose by lose by fourteen. They have a go at
winning by like one or two, So get them and
die on.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Your feet as opposed to live on your knees right bang.

Speaker 5 (16:31):
You've been or score the try from the end of
the End of the World. Yeah, so that's all the
look the other great one you should dive into. Phil
Gifford's just done his favorite, his top ten All Blacks
spring Box Clashes, and sometime tomorrow, Mate, I'm publishing my own.
I've ranked every game they ever played. That's one hundred
and eight games, and it took me too long to

(16:52):
do it, and it was the least efficient use of
my worktime. So I should take this opportunity to apologize
to my boss.

Speaker 2 (16:59):
You're the sports center to Mate, you can do whatever
you want with your time. You're running this show. You're
grown from Marge once and so people want to read
any of this, and there'll be plenty of right the
way through the week inzed heerld dot co dot z.
Make sure you subscribe and you can check out Papa
Winston and all of his men's fine work. Enjoy yourself

(17:19):
on Saturday night if it's entirely possible, because I don't
know if there be a new Zealander at that game
on Saturday night that will enjoy any of it.

Speaker 5 (17:29):
Not about enjoyment, it's not, it's it's just not to
ask my prediction. I think the all Blacks will win it,
and I think it will be awful. Remember how how
awful twenty eleven felt like the most the blood just
all kind of goes to the lower part of your
body and you just kind of you, you know, like
a tense neck for a week and it's and there's
no no joy in the thing at all. It's not

(17:49):
about joy. It's just about winning by one to three points.

Speaker 2 (17:54):
And on that note, Winston Aldworthyes, New Zealand Herald's Sporting editor,
thank you for your time. Now remove yourself from set
chamber beating.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
