On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave for Wednesday 14th May 2025, the irreplaceable Peter Burling has been replaced at Team New Zealand. Nathan Outteridge is the new skipper as the team looks to carry on their America’s Cup dominance. Peter Lester joins us to talk about the eligibility protocol and what this means around Nathan and Chris Draper’s positions in the team.

D’Arcy encourages Netball New Zealand to not just sit there, but do something. Following the progress of the board’s decisions through all the current complexities is like wading through treacle.

The Chamber is blessed with the presence of Newstalk’s rugby editor and voice of the game Elliott Smith, who tackles the Outteridge decision and looks toward the weekend’s Super Rugby Pacific action.

Big thanks to GJ Gardner Homes – New Zealand's most trusted home builder.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Welcommend a Sports Fix Yeah, daily podcast. Well you need
to know about the one of a wide world of sports,
which we well know is fa more important. It didn't
take them seriously my do miss Arsy Waterbrate and coming
up in this edition on the fourteenth of May twenty
twenty five. First up, I'm going to be hitting a
chat with Peter Lester, old school America's Cup Sailor and

(00:43):
that sports chief pundit. Well in my opinion anyway, talking
about the eligibility now that Draper and Outrage are officially
part of Team Zealand, I've got some opinion around New
Zealand met for and how long it takes to make
a decision. I suggest they get on with it and
joining us in the chamber is the voice of Write

(01:04):
b indw zaland Free News Talks EDB. Mister Kelliott smooth
very much to DJ Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's most trusted
home builder. All right, no point in messing around.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Let's do this in other news.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Swiping through Sports Today now from the means of the
ladies well, a couple of the athletes and one of
the women's coaches, The Star things are off with the
black Ferns and bag in black again. After a very
successful sevens campaign, Three Lanes received Pauldy Lane, Stacy Waker
back in Alan Bunting's squad, and Georgia Miller, who in essence,

(01:44):
according to her, is going back to school.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
We have been kings of paper, but I think at
the end of the day's just rugby, and I think
the girls really support us out there and just back
our abilities to perform.

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Gizelle and Able are comfortable with the time it's taking
to come to decisions around help Fabrica of the game.
I suppose you'd say Jimmy Wiley See of Newport, New
Zealand is aware of the thought processes of the energy, saying, hey,
make a decision that she's entirely comfortable with it.

Speaker 5 (02:18):
But Neple is really strong. We're working through a bunch
of issues at the moment, and it's not lost on
us that it seems like lots of moving parts, but.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
We're really excited about the direction that it's heading in and.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
For the Football Ferns. The in from coach Michael Mains
added five piers to the group, including Betsy Hasard, back
from becoming a momma last year, and the eyebrow raiser
well Annalie Alongo, named a month after she retired from
professional club football. Which he's back. She won't be a
fern hey, Michael.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Made the planet smash.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
We're doing this one and what we're doing for Rev
Possible Con twenty seven key stuff doing an assess ter throw.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
And on your Michael, and that is a quick swape
of sport through a Ladies Leans Today.

Speaker 6 (03:06):
You Sporcefix with Darcy Waldegrave.

Speaker 2 (03:12):
It's all on the netbe New Zealand. The pressure is
increasing from all quarters. What is your broadcast deal? Where
is this game the number one sport for Jahena here
in New Zealand. Where's it going to be shown? Is
it going to be free of charge? Is it going
to be behind a paywall? And with the am Z Premiership,

(03:34):
when's it going to be Are you going to move
it so it aligns better with what happens over in
Australia And are you going to relax the eligibility laws.
Everybody knows that Grace Weke is a superstar shooter and
she needs to be involved with what goes on on
the Silver Ferns. Look Jenny Wiley, the CEO, she's keen

(03:55):
on it happening. We know that Dame Noling told her
is super keen on happening. She wants it. All of
the players want it. So the board, now get up,
move forward, do something, make our decision. I appreciate there
are various factors in here around the broadcast deal, around
shifting the ain Z Premiership so it sits in nicely,

(04:17):
so we can get the best of boast worlds, so
we can get the best of both worlds when it
comes to getting the best out of our netball is
giving them the ability to chance their arm over in
the Aussie League, which in turn will lift the quality
of the Silver Ferns, which of course is the main
shop window. Yeah, the an Z Premiership is very important,

(04:40):
but nothing screens energy like the international game. The black dress.
That's where you get eyeballs, That's where you get the
heady combination of inspiration and aspiration. This is when young
women can look up and go, I want to do that.
I want to be that. I want to be involved.

(05:00):
There are so many decisions to be made by the
Board of Netball New Zealand. I'd say there's probably enough
time to do it. But really the discussions, the conjecture,
the interviews, the comments, it's gone on way too long.
Talk about treading water. If something doesn't happen soon, you're
going to sink and the game is going to drown.

(05:21):
Chop top, everybody make a call.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
We've got just the ticket.

Speaker 6 (05:26):
It's sports Vex news talks.

Speaker 2 (05:28):
Is he by joy now by one of my favorite
sailing commentators and former America's Cup sailor and everything else.
But I don't want to go into that, Peter Lester,
because you're just go, Nah, that wasn't me, mate.

Speaker 3 (05:40):
How are you get hi, Darcy?

Speaker 2 (05:42):
Looking forward as we always are to every edition of
the America's Cup, more so not the sailing, but the
drama behind the scenes. Are today what one day after
the thirtieth anniversary of that fantastic day over in San Diego,
they've announced that Outridge and Draper adjoining Team New Zealand

(06:03):
for the next defense. I need to know, Peter Lester,
where is the sit As far as eligibility because the
laws around this or the rules the protocol, Where does
it stand right now? What are we looking at? Mate?

Speaker 5 (06:18):
The protocol hasn't been published yet, but I think after
today's announcement, what we can assume is that the nationality
rule has been altered inasmuch and my take on it
right now would be if a non national of a
team has not sailed in the last America's Cup, that

(06:39):
they become eligible for another country. Now, that seems to
me as though it might have been a clause that's
been added to the protocol for the thirty eighth America's
Cup to try and help out a line when they
were in negotiations with Team New Zealand and with the

(07:00):
challenger record the rules Squadron in the UK, And of
course now we know that they've pulled out. But I
think today Chris Jafer, who's a brit being signed by
Emirates Team New Zealand. Now Chris did not do the
last America's Cup nor the one before the one in Auckland.
Therefore he has become eligible and that means that we

(07:23):
now know that there will be a protocol change in
terms of nationality. But the protocol has not been published yet,
it's only in the draft form. But my understanding is
the protocol announcement is very close.

Speaker 2 (07:36):
Like the tide in and out. I've got to start
with these ridiculous sayings around, sayny, but I can't help myself.
It's movable feasts that it always changes. That is the
nature of the America's Cup. Is this a surprise to
at all, providing or presuming that you're right around the
protocol change?

Speaker 5 (07:54):
Oh no, No, it's the America's Cup, you know, And
that's the intrigue if you're a bit of a you know,
I love I love the America's Cup, and of sort
of it's been my life and you know, what's going
on now is completely normal. It's not normal in real life,
a normal sport, but in the game of America's Cup,
it's absolutely normal and it's the sequence of events. So

(08:17):
you know, em Rest New Zealand win the Cup, they
get a challenge or a record, which is the Royal Squadron.
Then they have this period from the last Cup until
about now where they negotiate the rules for the next Cup,
which will be the thirty eighth Cup. Then they announce
the rules, which we call the protocol, and then from
there that opens up the period where entries will be

(08:41):
accepted for the thirty eighth America's Cup from the challenges
and then coupled with that as venue announcements. So there's
a bit happening in the next couple months.

Speaker 2 (08:51):
Primarily, Peter Lester, when you look at the adjustments and
changes of the protocol, where is it most likely to
fluctuate to move to Bend.

Speaker 5 (09:02):
I think obviously there's been a slight relaxing of the
nationality also that'll be reflected in the protocol. I'll be
interested to see what they've done with some of the
boat changes, the rule, the class rule changes, and I'll
be interested to see whether they've just pulled back a

(09:23):
little bit some of the technology and in terms of
the artificial intelligence and the automation on the boat, on
the boats, because we we certainly saw in Barcelona that
all the boats in fact had quite a high level
of automation in terms of some of the functions on board.
Now I think that might be pulled back a little bit,

(09:44):
or I'm hoping it will be pulled back and we'll
see a little bit more sailor input.

Speaker 6 (09:49):
The chamber is now in session on Sportsfax Chadia.

Speaker 2 (09:54):
It's both joins us in the chamber names the voice
of rugby here at news Talk ZEBB. SOO, surprise, surprise, Elliott.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
Good to see us.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
All right, we'll start with sailing. Just used the issue
the news today. Nathan Authridge is taking over the role
that Berlin just left. I'm still trying to get hold
of him by the way to make comment, but he's
doing a very good job at avoiding me.

Speaker 3 (10:19):
He's viping, you're attacking, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Yeah, so he's out, but outerage is in now un necessarily.
I'm like, oh yeah, not another Ossie. Enough of these guys,
can't we just have an actual team from New Zealand.
But he's been engaged with the team for a while, right,
he knows the way it works. So he's kind of
like an honorary in New zell.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
He's about his honorary as you know, Luke Metcalfe or
someone like that playing for the Warriors. The thing is,
though Team New Zealand has been very much pushing the
eligibility and having, you know, having people from that country
beyond the boat. They've pushed that for a number of
years now, we had Glenn Ashby, an Australian who was
in the title winning team with Team New Zealand a

(10:59):
few years back. Now Nathan Outeridge is going to be
the out and out skipper of this team. So look,
I think it is for me, it's a bit disappointing
to be honest, that this team that claims to wave
the Kiwi flag, that puts together all this talk about
how they want eligibility clauses and things like that goes
and plumps from Australia, who is a very good sailor.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
What do they do? They got like, that's okay, so
this is really important, but what's more important winning? So
they kind of flush It's cruel to say flush their
moral fiber away.

Speaker 4 (11:28):
But the comment it was probably going to go to
be in Saudi Arabia as well, so maybe if you're
going to flush it hopes away with Saudi Arabia, MAS
has flushed the whole boat away. So that's the issue
I've got with it. They talked a big game about
wanting to have people from those countries on board these
boats and now have got to have an Australian the hell,
and they've also signed up a brit So you're telling

(11:49):
me that the New Zealand's you know, sailing community can't contribute.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Someone can't get to get Helmeskcker.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Isn't it that? Do we not? We are a sailing
mad nation. They're everywhere that does. When I first saw that,
I'm like, hold on, We've had Australians at that level before,
but really, can't we find anywhere else?

Speaker 4 (12:09):
And at this point, do you I mean, you've won
it three times in a row. Do you weigh up? Actually,
we're going to give a younger kid the helm and hey,
maybe we won't win this one, maybe we'll lose control
of the America's Cup and it's destiny and maybe we
won't be the host syndicate for the America's Cup. But
in the long run, will it actually be better if
we go for this younger guy and give them some

(12:29):
experience In twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (12:31):
So Failing was quite young when they gave him a right.

Speaker 4 (12:33):
Absolutely, I mean Dean Barker did in two thousand as well,
and then he took it on and there's been all
sorts there. But I just think that if you are
proclaiming to be New Zealand team you've moaned about not
getting government money.

Speaker 3 (12:45):
You've moaned that you can't hold it here.

Speaker 4 (12:48):
You know, at some point you've actually got to give
back to New Zealand's sailing community.

Speaker 3 (12:52):
And I don't think they've done that on this occasion.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Well why don't know if it's first and foremost in
the mind, I.

Speaker 4 (12:57):
Think because well, they've only been ten New Zealand in
name only really because they're not a national syndicate.

Speaker 3 (13:05):
They're not a national team.

Speaker 4 (13:06):
They are representing a yacht club, but there's no component
of them that has to represent New Zealand. So they're
not a national syndicat no trials is there totally exactly.
So that's the issue I've got with it. So I think, yeah,
good for Team New Zealand. He's a great sale ath
and artriage. You've been around for many here and he'll
do a good job. But it's actually good for sailing
in New Zealand, I don't think.

Speaker 6 (13:26):
So.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
I suppose with the sale GP you're going, yep, no,
we know what we're doing. It's kind of like a
kidney punch from not to do it, but sale GP
going well this we've got this sort of you haven't Yeah,
And then well a couple of weeks away before the
announcement around where it's going to be held, all sorts
of rumors about where it may be won't be here

(13:48):
so slowly but surely death by a thousand cuts.

Speaker 4 (13:51):
Right, Yeah, it is absolutely And I guess if you're
Team New Zealand, you've got no compulsion to do any
of these things because you know you're winning and you
see fit to do the way you can. But I
just think it, Yeah, doesn't sit overly well with me.

Speaker 2 (14:07):
Especially a day after the thirtieth anniversary. Yeah, anyway, let's
move away from that. Let's go to Super Rugby Tierra.
It's still Elliott. It's still a vibrant, pulsating competition. I
thought maybe after round one two it might go, oh yeah,
we've been there, but hasn't stopped.

Speaker 4 (14:25):
Hasn't stopped, and doesn't look like it's going to stop
anytime soon. You look at the weekend, it was the
Chief's beating the Crusaders, coming from sixteen points down to
win by sixteen.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
It was horrible. Sorry, we both can. Yeah, so it
was horrible, but hey, congratulations to the Chiefs.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
That's right, right, I mean the only result that you go, yeah,
this game kind of went to script was the Drew
Blues game with the Blues swept over the top of them.
Otherwise it was around where you know, the Reds beat
the Warratars away, we had the Force pushing the Brumbies
right to the limit. It's delivered great rugby again and
you look at the slate for this weekend, really interesting

(14:59):
games and ones with you know, plaff implications on the line. So,
I mean it's been a great competition the whole way
through and it's delivered. And you know, even as we
get to the playoff mix, you know that those home
spots are going to be really really hotly contested and
you wouldn't rule out, you know, team six speeding one,
which is what.

Speaker 3 (15:16):
We've wanted a super abuly so many years.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yes, Now, as far as players coming back from injury,
because it is a very physical competition, and I love
the fact all of these all Blacks haven't been rested
and rotated. They get a rest when someone breaks their shoulder.
But we've got guys coming back, and we've also lost
some keys. I mean, losing the whole is terrible for
the Hurricanes. But as far as back in again, who

(15:40):
are the big ticks do you think for this round?

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Well, good news is for the Hurricanes, you know, lost
Kennena Haller obviously for the season, but Britt Camberon, who
did the injury last year to his knee, has come
back way earlier than expected. He's going to be on
the bench on Friday Night against the Highlanders. That's a
real bonus for them. Obviously. They're just building quite nicely
after going into the Bible that went over the Chiefs
the Blues that game against more ONEA PACIFICA get Caleb

(16:04):
Clark back on the wing from injury after a couple
weeks out with thigh, and.

Speaker 3 (16:07):
Trade is going to be vibrant exchange that, oh certainly is.

Speaker 4 (16:10):
I can't wait for their game at North Harbor Stadium
and the Crusaders will. Jordan's obviously out for maybe three weeks.
While they'reabouts, they bring in Joining McNichol for the first
time this season, so they've lost in all black. They
gain a Welsh international in the mix, but they're not
gonna have Cody Taylor Scott Barrett in the mix this week.
So a couple of outs for the Crusaders as they
go across to Sydney. So even with those matchups, you go, yep,

(16:33):
players are in, but players are coming back and clad. McMillan,
I think it was set on the weekend after the
Crusader's Chiefs gamme. It's going to be Weaver's got the
most fit bodies. At the end of the season, it's
probably going to prevail.

Speaker 2 (16:43):
Yeah, it is a war of nutrition. As Murray Deeker
once famously said, sorry, Diggs, have you listening? Good? Now
help myself. This is again another key round and it's
so vibrant and I can't say enough about what's happened
in this so far's it's just been tremendous.

Speaker 4 (17:01):
It has been and the quality of rugby's been outstanding.
And we're at this point of the season where there
are stills on the outside looking in Mwana who can
stimight the plaowfs, the war Retars can still make it
the force. You know, all these teams out in the
side in the Crusaders this week. Then the Chiefs are
jumping for joy, The Brumbies are jumping for joy. Probably

(17:21):
even you know the teams in four and five Hurricanes
and Reds jumping for joy. But you can't definitively go yep.
That's a game that they're going to win or lose.
And it's the great thing about the comp this year
is that there is move to shake these teams up,
and as I say, that's what we've wanted and we're
finally getting somewhere. And you just hope that the reports

(17:42):
of us expansion that came along last week are off
the mark.

Speaker 2 (17:45):
Not a fan don't want to get done. One final
thing and thanks very much Elliott Smith for joining us
here in the chamber. It's not just all about Chiefs
Crusaders anymore, is it.

Speaker 3 (17:57):
No, No, it's not no, it's it's it's really not.

Speaker 4 (18:00):
And you look at the Brumbies. So now in seconds
on the ladder, the Hurricanes building quite nicely. As I before,
the Highlanders probably out of the playoff mix, but hey,
they've got nothing to lose. They've got the Crusaders to
come in a couple of weeks time, they've got the
Hurricanes away.

Speaker 3 (18:16):
This week they went up one of those.

Speaker 4 (18:18):
Games, telling me there's still a chance it shakes up
the comp As you said, they can act real sports,
you know, spoilers in this competition. And if wanna beat
the Blues this week, then it's all on for young
and old, so this is not a one two by
any stretch of the imagination. I think there's all six
teams in this super roggy playff mix, maybe seven if
you had moan, are capable of perhaps winning the comp.

Speaker 2 (18:39):
And then looking forward to your continued call for all
these key games on Gold Sport. Elliott, thanks for joining us,
thanks having.

Speaker 6 (18:47):
