Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be follow this and our wide range of podcasts
now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
It'd be the warnest of welcomes to you. Thanks for
joining us here on a Sports Fixed podcast. You're home
of bite size sporting jury in a weekdaily basis. My
name is Darcy Waldegrave and lined up for you in
this edition for Wednesday, third of April twenty twenty five,
We've got a chat with Kurt Capele. He's an origin player.
(00:43):
Here's a warrior. He's gone from the edge to scene
to run back to the edges again. Can they replicate
the joy of Brisbane last weekend with the Anzac Day fixture?
Just around the corner, Capele joins us shortly up after that.
I've got my opinion. I of course will be ranting
(01:03):
and screaming to you. Oh no, I'll be presenting an
opinion on in a calm and measured fashion. And then
the chamber doors open and then comes Bonnie Jansen. Bonnie
is the New Zealand Herald sports writer. I'm gonna talk
to her about some of the big sporting stories of
(01:23):
the day. Hey, thanks very much for joining us. Look
after yourself and if you're looking like building a home,
you can do no better than going to GJ. Gardner Homes,
New Zealand's most trusted home builder. They'll sort you out
for sure. For sure, Right, let's get on to it.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
In other news, in some sports.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
Speak, today, UPENDFC had one nt on the A Leagues
Premiers plaque and you're needing one miserable point from their
last two games to secure the league's top spot ahead
of playoff crime. So where does the Premier's play actually go?
Speaker 4 (01:59):
They put it on the.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Floor and the sop drawer on the mantelpiece, straight to
the pool room, trophy cabinet on tray me deaf Steve Corricker,
you got any ideas.
Speaker 5 (02:12):
I don't know where it's going to go, but we'd
like to get it done this weekend, obviously in front
of our home fans. I think they deserve it as well.
They've been supporting us amazing all this season and I
think it's only fitting if we can get it done
on at a home game.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Last home game. Yeah, it's going straight to the ball
room for my warrior. Marcela Montoya played from Penrose to
link up with his old team, the Bulldogs, after a
handful of years with the Wars. Home was calling and
he answered smart move. Considering the six game winning tear
that the Dogs are currently enjoying, mass reckons the club
(02:45):
has changed immensely since he's played. Man, he's really enjoying it.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
It's pretty cool. I mean for myself coming back and
seeing the fans go around us.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
So it's been awesome.
Speaker 5 (02:54):
When I was here last time, it was tough times
and I think now it's awesome to see the fans
since just play some good footing and appreciate that.
Speaker 3 (03:01):
And chiefs CEO Simon Grafis has taken assurances from ground
staff that he sold out cricket ground there playing on
Onesay day will resemble a rugby field, not a cricket wicket.
But they oval all the sweet he reckons.
Speaker 6 (03:15):
Obviously there's a block in the middle, which nowadays everyone
gets really worried about. But now we've been assured by
the groundsman and.
Speaker 3 (03:22):
Throw over there that they can get the pitch ready.
Speaker 6 (03:24):
So you understand that they can soften the pitch up
and grow.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
The grass and it should be all right.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
Nice from a storage container to bellmore to the mount.
That's sport today, you Scavinian.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
It's Sportsfix with Darcy Waldegrave.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
I'm a big fan of women's rugby here in New
Zealand for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it
is our national game and we need to take into
account that half of the nation are women. This is
also one of the few growth areas in New Zealand rugby.
There are more eyeballs, therefore eventually more revenue to be
(04:05):
dragged in by focusing on the women's game. Sure it's
not big yet and it might take a few years
before it really gets the traction it requires. Remember that
the women's game or the Black Ferns, have only been
professional for three years, the sevens only thirteen years. It's
(04:25):
going to take a bit of time for this to
bed in. One thing I can't stand around this argument
is people saying to me, well, no one watches the
game until they learn to pay their own bills. We're
not paying any attention to them, which is peyton madness.
The professional game in New Zealand four men has got
(04:46):
a massive head start on the women. The game full
stop for men has got a massive head start on women.
Women need time to bed in, they need time to
gain traction. And as for people complaining about the lack
of viewership and the lack of warm props the bodies
on seats, that is bizarre. Super Rugby he fills the
(05:09):
stands every week. Problems in the White Couple, There are
problems in Auckland, huge problems in Wellington with the Hurricanes.
Next year. The Crusaders will be fine with their fancy
new stadium, and the Highlanders they don't exactly stuff their
stadium with people every time the Heartlanders play down there.
So what I'm saying is that the problem around people
(05:30):
going to the games is not solely a gender issue.
It's a wider issue that cannot be placed at the
feet of the women's game. It's going to take time,
but accusing the women of not attracting viewers when the
men do exactly the same thing, there is nothing short
(05:50):
of sexist.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's SPORTSFX with Darcy Waldgrave.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
As warm Welcome and now to the sports X podcast
to Warrior sometimes Center a bit more predominantly egged player
Kurt Capleur. Good mate, I'm very very well looking forward
to this weekend's action, as I'm sure you are as well.
Before we look forward and I look to the biggest
stories of the week, I just got to take you
(06:20):
back to that game last week against the Brisbane Broncos.
I suppose first and foremost, it must have been nice
being a center and how good to actually beat those
guys at the last. That was one stunning game of football.
Speaker 4 (06:32):
Yeah, it was good.
Speaker 7 (06:33):
It was really good to get a break on the
shoulders and get out in the centers enough to make
his men tackles as back as you know, and obviously.
Speaker 4 (06:41):
To get one up again over my old team. You know,
it's pretty sweet.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
The celebration around the slotting of the winning goal was
huge because he had a rotten all time of metcalf
before that. But you've got to be impressed with the
spine of the guy. Ok, give me the ball, I
can do this.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Yeah it was.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
It was obviously Drew.
Speaker 7 (07:02):
He had a rough night with the with the shoe
up until then, but yeah, just to hold his nerve
and be able to put one through for us and
win us the game. It's credit to him and the
player that's he's going to be moving forward.
Speaker 3 (07:14):
You don't lie to us. What was the thought process
like when you saw and grabbed the ball to kick it?
Speaker 4 (07:20):
Yeah, no, I wanted him to kick it.
Speaker 7 (07:21):
We obviously had the win, so worst scenario is they
catched on their troll on and we just defender set
and they don't get a crack and field go anyway,
So it was definitely the right decision.
Speaker 4 (07:31):
And yeah, he came up with the chuckies.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
You're going to be more had satisfied or at home
getting your shoulders smashed in the upcoming game or not.
Speaker 7 (07:42):
Yeah, I'll be looking looking forward to getting back a
bit closer to the middle where people are a bit
slower and there's probably a bit bit less pressure on
the decisions you make, I guess, But yeah, a bit
more comfortable back in there around around the other slower
and older followers.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Here calling himself slow and old, now are you g No, I.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Was talking about the other follows, not myself.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Good point. Hey, welcome returns to the side for this weekend.
Chance is back, Rocco Barries back as well, and Chance
of course signed on the dotted line today. How important
is that for the future of the club, do you think?
Speaker 4 (08:19):
Yeah, I think it's awesome.
Speaker 7 (08:20):
Obviously, It's something that's been going on in the background
for Chance the last few weeks, and I think it's
great for him to be able to get that done. Obviously,
he's just had the week off with the head knock,
so he's able to sit down and not out of
deal and put in the paper.
Speaker 4 (08:34):
So hopefully moving forward now he's free in the mind
and can play his best footy for us, which would
be great.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
There's always argument around his position and playing. He's a
very good fullback, but you've got this Roger Toivasa Sheik.
He's not flying around now, he's all broken. But that's
always going to be a discussion with Warriors fans about
who best sits in there. I'm presuming though, that Chance
has got the team's full support in that number one jumper.
Speaker 4 (09:00):
One hundred percent. Mate.
Speaker 7 (09:02):
Obviously, you know the amount of effort he puts into
his game weekend week out, and you know he's definitely
brings a lot of energy to our team from the
back and he's been great for us so far this
year and he will continue to be great for us
for the rest of the year, I'd say. And as
to the rest of the fans that have their opinions
on the team. Well, that's just how it is. They're
(09:23):
not the coach, so I just my recommendation to them
has just supported the team no matter who's in what jersey.
And as I've said plenty of times before, it takes
a whole squad to win a premiership. So it doesn't
matter who's playing where and who gets to wear the
jersey in which week. As long as we're winning games,
the show will go on.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
Let's talk about the pack. Chatted with Jackson Ford a
couple of weeks ago. What a lovely guy, Jackson Forder's
I wouldn't have picked there for a probability. Miss Barnett
as well up the front yourself near Cord Aaron Clark.
A lot of people now are saying, hey, he's really
gelled this team. He's holding this team together with its introduction.
(10:03):
He's a key part of that pack. You're going to
disagree with me, kot Nos.
Speaker 7 (10:08):
He's had a real impact on our team, actually is,
and it's awesome to have him back home over here
playing for a team that he loves, and I think
he's playing his best footing to be honest with you,
he's training hard and on the weekends. He's gone out
there and given it. He's also he's only going to
get better and better with time as well.
Speaker 3 (10:25):
What did you make of the efforts of the new
I can call him a freak now because your team's
calling him a freak too, Liqua Hala Sima. He's off
the beach, up against the nights. But wow, how did
he go starting? Do you think you know what a
good look? What advice would you give him? What's your impressions?
Speaker 7 (10:43):
Yeah, he's a powerhouse mate. He's obviously a freak talent
as you said, and you know he's pretty gifted. So
it's awesome to have him on my team because I'd
hate to have to tackle him every week, but to
see what he can do in the limited around of
minutes that he has had. I think moving forward, the
more minutes he gets, you know, the more touches the
ball he gets, the better our team's going to go.
Speaker 1 (11:03):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports Fix.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
Yeah, we got someone free the Chamber today Here on
the Sports Fix out of the New Zealand Herald. It's
sports journalist Bonnie Jensen and Kilda Bonnie. Welcome, Yoda Das.
Speaker 6 (11:18):
How are you thanks for having me, No.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Thanks for coming on, and a couple of stories today
floating round. I let's talk to you about. Let's start
off with Auckland f C AKFC, because you're such a
football fan, I mean, you live for the game. Obviously,
it looks like the goalkeeper to the Stars Pulson is
going to disappear at the end of the season. Steve
Carica seems resigned to that. It seems like a shame,
(11:41):
but wow, his contribution, do we mind?
Speaker 6 (11:45):
I mean no, it was probably too good to be
true that he would stay on any longer than this
one season that he was on loan. And I remember
back when he first, you know, the news came out
that he was going to be loaned back to Oakland
f C. And he just seemed absolutely gutted.
Speaker 3 (11:59):
Well right, it was like you're doing what you went
all the way there, it comes straight there again exactly.
Speaker 6 (12:04):
And I think, you know, while the Yellow Fever fans
were passed off, I think Auckland the port fans were
ecstatic about it, and so they should be. He's had
an unbelievable season. But yeah, as Steve Corricker has alluded
to this week, he won't be sticking around after this season,
and it's actually I think a good thing as well
for Michael Vaut, who is also kind of in that
wider one of the bubble players for the All White.
(12:28):
He will now get a shot hopefully next season. But
as for Alex Paulson, he's got to hit to Europe.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
He's got to go.
Speaker 3 (12:34):
By the way, he didn't pack a sad and drop
his lip and goes getting your blend. I mean when
he first came back the first press, it was a
bit like he's going to what just happened Evison Wellington,
I've gone to Auckland via I don't know, but he
performed and that says a lot about the professionalism of
the guy. A lot of us still can't quite work
out what's going on with this Auckland side. They're going
(12:55):
to pick up the Premier's played by the looks of it.
Speaker 6 (12:57):
This is astonishing, It's absolutely insane, and yeah, you're right, Darcy.
Paulson has responded so well to that news, which absolutely
would have hurt him, but he's kept Auckland FC right. So,
I mean, the whole team have done exceptionally well, but
Paulson in particular and other Stollar season like he had
with the Phoenix last year. And yes, you're right. They're
(13:17):
contending for this Premier's Plate on Sunday, which they just
need a point and they'll do it.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
And I can't think like that though, right, I think
we just need a point. It all turned pair shape.
But they're playing Perth and they're like logs at the
bottom of the table, so it should be a given.
It should be, but sports sport.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
Well, that's the irony of it is. One of the
worst losses they had this season was to Perth Glory,
who were the bottom of the table, so they're hoping
to get revenge back. But that's the thing, right, The
pressure is unreal because the Premier's Plate is flying over
from Australia from the Central Coast this Saturday, so it's
going to be in Auckland and to play with that
pressure is unbelievable. They're probably going to sell out the
(13:56):
stadium and you know, you don't want to screw it.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
Up, No, you don't. Where are they going to keep
it should they win it? Because they haven't got a trophy,
cann't it?
Speaker 6 (14:02):
Well yeah, again, another thing we spoke with Steve Coriker
about they didn't have gear at the start of the season,
and now they're going to have silver. Were on Sunday,
you know they've gone to.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Before.
Speaker 6 (14:16):
The thing is does even if they lose on Sunday,
they are still lightly going to win the league. They
would have to lose their next two games by six nil,
so pretty much a done deal.
Speaker 3 (14:26):
Let's not talk about the next step, which of course
is semi finals finals in the light. We'll wait till
that's actually going to happen. How big is this squad
being named for the Black Ferns forty nine players going
into camp. Well, I know there's a World Cup coming up,
but forty nine I thought that as well.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
And I wonder if the reason that they've named so
many is because the Super Rugby Opicky season wasn't that
competitive maybe as head coach Alan Bunting would have liked.
So maybe he's just picking this giant pool of players
to really have the best of the best go up
against each other, which we didn't. I mean, you know,
OPICKI was competitive towards the end with some teams, but
(15:08):
maybe not as competitive as we would have liked in
a World Cup year. So it's also great to see
the addition of the sevens girls.
Speaker 3 (15:15):
Yeah, a lot of sevens girls involved in that. And
we're talking yesterday with Hannah Porter around this about the combination.
It looks like they're in a really good space to
actually work the pathways and gel all of these teams
together to give all of the athletes the best opportunity
to make some money. And I suppose cut each other's
(15:35):
lunch when it comes to performing, because that's an issue,
isn't it, Like you go fifteens, you go sevens, What
has more relevance, what doesn't. So they're sorting that, which
is brilliant to here.
Speaker 6 (15:45):
Absolutely, we need to make the most of the talent
we have on offer. We don't see it really in
the men's side at all, these crossing over of codes,
not that it really is too completely separate codes, but yeah,
we should absolutely make the most of the talent, particularly
in the women's space that is still you know, in
dire need of depth, and that's what's been an issue
in this Black Fern's set up. But yeah, I look
(16:08):
at those that kind of training squad named and I think, actually,
maybe we will be more competitive at this World Cup
against the likes of England. Do you reckon.
Speaker 3 (16:18):
So what you're looking at it plainly got a coach
who knows what he's doing. Now on bunting, that is great.
They haven't got Wayne Smith there, which is what I mean.
Guy's a freak, but he's not there. It's the balance
between youthful exuberance and experience, and that's what every team
looks toward. And in this side, if you look at
(16:38):
that training group, there's a heady mix of both and
then people in the middle. Shouldn't they pick it right?
It should be I don't say a winning team, but
I think they'll represent particularly well with the likes of
your Woodman's and your demands and of course young Braxton Sorenson, mgee,
(17:01):
there's a whole lot of them.
Speaker 6 (17:02):
Well that's as well. They've not got long to impress.
Next Thursday they'll name a smaller squad who go into
that pack four series against Australia and the United States
and Canada. But yeah, you look at those names, Darcy,
as you've just mentioned, and some good players are going
to miss out on the World Cup. You know, do
you take Brax and Sorens and McGhee over someone like
(17:24):
Rene Holmes or does she get the start, or do
you not select a player like Ruby Tewey who probably
hasn't been performing in the last couple of years. But no,
she will be exceptional a great leader in the wider squad.
So Alan Bunting certainly has a lot of questions to
ask himself and the players don't have long to prove himself.
Speaker 3 (17:42):
Bonnie Jansen, you are a worthy addition to the crew
that's are fester in the chamber from time to time
