On Sports Fix with D'Arcy Waldegrave for 24th September 2025, the All Blacks are set to take on the Wallabies in the first Bledisloe cup test this Saturday at Eden Park.

D'Arcy caught up with the captain of the Wallabies side who last beat the All Blacks at the ground in 1986, Andrew Slack, to discuss how Australian rugby is looking ahead of the massive test match.

D'Arcy shared his thoughts on the new portable brain scanner announced today that is set to help concussion diagnosis on the sidelines.

And D'Arcy and former TV3 broadcaster Howard 'Dobbo' Dobson discuss the positives for the Silver Ferns and All Blacks selections ahead of the Bledisloe.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks ed B
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
This is Sportsfix Howard by News Talks.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It be welcommend to the Sports Fixed podcast. I am
Darcy Watergrave. It is a Wednesday, twenty four to September
twenty twenty five. Wats in store for you today? Oh
and thanks very much to DJ Cardner homes He Sailad's
most trusted home builder for climbing on board. I'm going
to have a chat.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
With Andrew Slack. Do you remember nineteen eighty six, Well,
let me tell you it's the last fund the Australians
beat the All Blacks at Eden Park. We're going to
reflect on that. No hot takes either from me. I've
got a good news story around concussion yet. It is
a good news story and it'll be joined in by
the chamber by Jabe Jobson. How would Dobson as we

(01:01):
take a look at it, a couple of the big
sports stories on Moday. That is our master plan. Stand
So let's get amongst other news. I'm now for some
sport today. From the mounds of these sporting newsmakers, we're
turning All Black half back cam at Ruger believes the
talent is there to defend the Eden Park record, but
it's how those talents are implemented. It's the real key

(01:24):
to success over the Wallabies.

Speaker 4 (01:26):
We've definitely got the game model to be able to
win games. You know that the.

Speaker 5 (01:29):
Wallabies is next two weeks.

Speaker 4 (01:31):
I guess identifying how we want to attack them and
coming up with a really I guess muster Tedt game
plan that replicates I guess the players that have got
We've got great athletes across the park.

Speaker 3 (01:41):
The Silver firms that lot to continue their dominance of
the South African proteust tonight the second test of the
Tiny Jameson Trophy series. The firms have been shaken by
the standing down of Via coach Codua, with mccaul's and
Derry picking up the slack temporarily caught. Kim you orda
POI was asked if the environment has a different energy

(02:03):
around this, Yeah, I guess.

Speaker 6 (02:05):
So it's kind of weird you asked it because it's
still kind of feels like we're just starting and not
really in the middle of a campaign yet, just because
we had limited build up and the Wrighter.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Cup gets it to wriggle On on Friday at the
Monster Beth Paid Black Track USA's Big Swinging Yeah. Scotty
Cheffler is hoping that Team USA's defeat the hands of
Team Europe two years ago in Rome will provide beneficial lessons.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
I don't think it can be understated how difficult of
a week roam was for us. You know, I think
we could have done better for sure that that wasn't
how I expected the week to go. And you know,
I think we learned from it and worst preparers over
this time.

Speaker 3 (02:45):
And there it is athletes words done.

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Dissecting the sporting agenda. It's Sportsfix with Dancy Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (02:56):
We're joined now on the show by former Wallaby captain
Andrew Slack. Did a Andrew long time no speak very well,
very excited about the possibility of this week keen because
the Australians, the Wallabies are looking to do something that
hasn't been done since well, I'd say Moss was a
lad or you were playing for the Wallabies. What are

(03:18):
you a member of that day?

Speaker 7 (03:20):
A few things. My memory is not what it should
be that many years now, but I know it was
a culmination of good Aden months for the Wallabies. We've
had some success elsewhere and we're probably just about the
last last hurrah in terms of being at the peak
and so beating the All Blacks on the home turf

(03:42):
and the series was terrific. So I remember the general thing.
A couple of minor things is I remember en Rodriguez
making a tackle on Picker Reid. That was a pretty
puvotal moment, Campe scoring a try at one stage, and
you know, the end being the end and we were ahead,
so it was a good day.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Would you ever thought that it'd take this long between drinks?
It's a gulf, it's almost it's almost unfeathomable, unfeathomable that
it's taken so long.

Speaker 7 (04:12):
Well, it is odd in the sense that you know,
you've got to ease these teams. And Nick then when
he was taking over for a while and we had
some pretty solid teams in the mid two thousands, I
think one of us fall over the line. But around
this time people have asked me why, and I haven't
come up with a decent answer yet, apart from the

(04:33):
fact that every time we played, even part of playing
the All Blacks, so you're not home.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
And then interesting because it's been said, well, we're not
overly concerns. I'll tell it. It's just a footy field really,
but it's just so much more than that. How do
you get that out of your mind when you run
on to that park? This is just a footy field.

Speaker 7 (04:54):
Well interesting that it says that, because the one thing
in trying to work out why it's also a cricket
field and it's not. You know, it's not rectangular. I
found a slightly difficult police place to play this, like
the Sydney Cricket ground. It just angles are a bit
nod and that maybe because but they're just sort of
upset my feel. And I think with the All Blacks

(05:15):
and New Zealand players used to playing there, their bearings
were better. Maybe now I am clutching it straw famous,
but that's the one thing that maybe a legitimate answer.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
I'm interested in the current state of Australian rugby because
it's been turned on its head in a good way.
And I hate to say this, we're always trying to
claim something off each other, you know, the Pavlova far Lap,
crowded house, whatever. But you're in possession now of some
very good rugby brains that are all from New Zealand.

(05:51):
We've got scrum coach chron that's something else. Of course,
you've got their head coach Ozzie Joe Schmidt as they're
calling them that the list goes on. How instruments do
you think those guys have been and turning the fortunes around.

Speaker 7 (06:03):
Completely on top of it all. I mean, you know,
who knows what would have happened if they hadn't a
been brought on board. But the reality is they have
and they've done a superb job for both of them.
They well, you know, there's a bit of a talk
in Australia you need an Australian coach to the Australian
I reckon that's dribbled. I mean the rul's moved on.

Speaker 8 (06:20):
Now.

Speaker 7 (06:21):
You want the best person and the most knowledgeable person
and the one who gets the best out of the players,
and Joe's definitely done that. I know that the players
are thrilled with the way he does things and the
way Coronnie does Conno does things as well. So they're
a happy bunch. And that's not because they're being molly coddle,
because I don't think Joe's and molly good. But the

(06:43):
short answer to your questions, they've been fantastic and I
think there's a bit of disappointment that Joe, because of
his circumstances, not able to keep game. But we'll take
him as long as we can have him.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
And lest Kiss, of course, is waiting in the wings.
He must be beside himself with joy that what can
be pulled out of the of the players, the cattle
they've got, because he's been complaints that you just haven't
got the players, but they're there, all right, it's just
how you utilize them.

Speaker 6 (07:08):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (07:08):
Well, you know, I think some of the players have
now mature, We've got a bit of depth in some
areas we've we've still got concerns. I mean, James to
Connor's probably be our first choice number ten now and
he's thirty five, so you know, he's not going to
be here for one hundred years. And there's a lot
of good up and comes around there that nobody's proven
themselves yet at number ten, So that's a concern to

(07:31):
a degree, although I think we'll get there. But everywhere
else pretty well, we've got some depth which we haven't had,
and you're not going to get anywhere without debt. We've
also got a couple of world class players and you're
not going to get anywhere without world class players. So
about two or three of those anyway, so you know
it's all looking up. But each week to new week,
and I think that's the way they face it, the
way they've got places set that.

Speaker 3 (07:52):
From a rugby perspective, this championship has been extraordinary. No
one's run away with it as tight as they come.
What would you put that down to?

Speaker 7 (08:02):
No one saw this coming Andrew, Well, every team's better,
you know, you're just say we're talking about Australia being better,
Argentina or a clear better and South Africa and New
Zealand are always you know, top of the tree really,
so I mean from a rugby perspective in Australia, this
is fantastic, not only because the Wallabies are doing better,
but you want to contest, you know, you don't want okay,
we know that by the New Zealand and South Africa

(08:23):
going to win this thing. And that's from a non
parochial point of view. So I think short actually argent
Australia playing better, New Zealand and South Africa. You know,
you are sure the New Zealanders aren't thinking at the
top of the tree at the moment with recent results,
but they're still a hot side. So it's you know,
it's been the best rugby championship. Is what people love
sports for because there's a contest and you know you

(08:44):
don't know who's going to win.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Newsvillion, it's Sports Figs with Dancie Waldegrave.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Today there is a good news story around concussion. I
know that sounds strange because concussion is not a good story,
but this one is a ripper. Let's face it, it
is a part of contact sport that you cannot avoid
unless you don't play the game full stop. But what
is the point in taking yourself out of physical activity

(09:14):
because you're afraid of concussion. All you need to do
is be educated around the perils of concussion, how you
go about treating your concussion and moving on. We don't
want people to stop playing contact sports. We don't want
people to stop boxing, we don't want people to stop
football because of the chance of concussion. We just need

(09:34):
education in that space. I think we all know that
today it was announced there is a piece of technology
that should help everybody in this space. It's been worked
on for seven years. It's called the neuro Check headset
and it's something that's been promoted assisted by Ambassador Steve Devine,

(09:54):
and we know the former All Black had to retire
from rugby after repeated concussions and concerned about us mental
wellbeing into the future. What this device does is check
to see if you've been can cust It can do
it in two minutes, It can do it on the sideline,
and it can tell you what you need to do. Yes,

(10:16):
you're being concussed, you need to step down. That's only
the first part of the problem. The rest of the yessue,
of course, comes down to return to play protocols, which
is something each individual sport has to work out for themselves.
This as a tool, though after seven years of development
and being approved by the mighty FDA in the United

(10:39):
States of America, suggests that it will be considerably more
accurate than the mouthguard that lights up much better than
a sideline test. Hold a hand over your eye and
walk in a straight line. It will accurately within a
short amount of time tell the player whether the ben
can cust or not. Beyond that, it's up to them

(11:00):
and the sport to determine their best way to return
to the game. You love it when technology collides with sport,
and that's the only collision we want to see.

Speaker 1 (11:12):
The Chamber is now in session on Sports.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Fix and it's we Welcome into the Chamber now, Tobo,
Dubbs and Howard did Dobbs make it the feeling how
that you've changed your name by deep pol to Dubbo.
Welcome into the Chamber, mate, I trust you.

Speaker 8 (11:25):
I only had it on TV three for nearly twenty years. Mate.

Speaker 3 (11:28):
Okay, there you go, and you can't get away from
the wonderful wide world of sport now, can you. Let's
look at a couple of the sports stories today and
that there's a positive one that the Silver Ferns are
actually going to be playing netball against a team that
they'll probably win and nothing to do with what's going
on in the exterior. This has got to be a
welcome ingredient part of their week. Not in New Zealand netple,

(11:51):
but the Ferns. I mean, they've got grace weekay back,
they're playing good netball. This is a rare positive agreed.

Speaker 9 (11:58):
I mean Game one they flogged the Protess South Africans.

Speaker 8 (12:02):
What's seventy seven.

Speaker 9 (12:04):
By plenty twenty on points grace in a week he
got fifty eight of seventy talk about all one player machine.
She's the world class player that Dame Knowles has identified
that they have and Dame Knowles is looking.

Speaker 8 (12:17):
For six others to join her.

Speaker 9 (12:19):
And that's part of the problem that Dame Knowles is
no longer the coach for now.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
The turnaround, the immediate turnaround. Well, I say turn around,
she's not playing recently. But how much of this is
Yvette mccaulson curion and how much of this is the
players standing up and actually playing. It's a pretty difficult
thing to do through this huge schism. I suppose it's
a eruptive between the coach and the players. And new
Zella netple.

Speaker 9 (12:44):
Well Avett is a class that she's won three A
and Z titles previously at domestic level.

Speaker 8 (12:50):
She's the perfect person to come in.

Speaker 9 (12:51):
She's the calming influence and also the players. And let's
be honest, there's two camps. There's the camp that can
handle Dame knowles regime, which is brutal, and there's the
camp that can't. And so Yvette has come in as
a peacemaker, and there's some embarrassed players there because, let's

(13:12):
be honest, Dan Knowles has been thrown under the bus.

Speaker 8 (13:15):
They won't say officially why. I'll tell you why.

Speaker 9 (13:17):
Player power, player bitchiness and hero regime is so hot
to trot. Some of these players, not all of them,
can't cope and they've complained it's too hard. Yet this
is the same woman that took us to was a
twenty nineteen World Championship glory, and yeah, they can't hack
it us too hot in the kitchen get out. But
what's said, as you know, is that they won't say anything.

(13:39):
There's no transparency. The good news is that they stepped
up in game one against the pro Tears in Auckland.
We've got game two tonight and you plum us. And
what was really impressive was the first quarter because we
destroyed them in the first quarter, and so if there's
any doubt that we were going to be ambushed and
lose to the Protears, that was quickly extinguished.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
A lot of pride in there. I get the feeling.
And I've talked about this before, Howard. It's almost overcorrected
the situation around player power. You can have enough, Absolutely
you can, but in some cases it can go too far.
Whose team is it? Hopefully this needle will get some
balance eventually.

Speaker 8 (14:18):
Well event McAuslan jury has said that she can't travel.
So the next series, as I understand, is the Constellation
Cup against the Aussies. It usually comprises of two tests
here and two tests over there. I haven't checked the schedule,
but there's no reason to say it hasn't changed. So
she's not going to be the coach against Australians in Australia.

(14:39):
So whose team is it?

Speaker 9 (14:40):
Well that if they can continue to stand down Dame Knowles,
they're going to have to point another interim coach. So
this is all the backdrop to what's happening tonight. I
think we'll nail the protess that we will outclass them
with grace there you know she is will class.

Speaker 8 (14:56):
The greater question is okay? Is u Zella and there all.

Speaker 9 (14:58):
Going to be transparent enough to say, look, this is
the reason why we have shall we call it bench?
Dame Knowles stood it down and until that happens, this
message just going to get bigger. But thank goodness, A
girls stepped up in game one and they'll do the
same again tonight.

Speaker 3 (15:13):
Yeah, I think that faith, then you sell a netball
to sort this out, because the problem, it looks like
it's been going on for months and months and months
is pretty low. But I'm like you, I just enjoy
the netball and that is great to see, very very enjoyable.
So I forget about the politics that I get back
into the office again.

Speaker 8 (15:30):
I know, what do you make of the new dresses?
They seem to be a lot tighter in the silver Fairs?
Did you notice that some of those girls didn't.

Speaker 9 (15:36):
Look that comfortable wearing them? Just my did I see
something that wasn't there?

Speaker 3 (15:40):
I'd be careful if you. How do you get yourself
canceled making comments like that? Well, let's move on to
another big story of the week. Hey, tomorrow the all
Blacks team comes out. Who knows what it consists of,
who knows what changes are, who knows what has to
be done? And this is this is chaos for Scott Robinson,
isn't it?

Speaker 8 (15:59):
Yep? Look, you and I have watched rugby for over
fifty years.

Speaker 9 (16:02):
We've seen all black teams get beats, but not in
fifty years have we had this recurring aereal battle which
we're not winning. And okay, who's our best jumper. I'll
tell you how best jumper is. He's number twelve and
that is Jordi Barrett. I'd have him at fullback. I
agree with an Strawn. I'd have our best aeral man

(16:23):
at fullback. It's not will Jordan. He can slip onto
the wing. Get Jordi back there. Remember they use him
for kickoff restarts. He quite off and jumps with the
forwards at kick restarts. So why not having at the
back in the number fifteen Jersey Rico Yowani, we're told
what was it bereavement leave? Didn't play in that last game?
Is that we'll find out? Will he get recalled ors

(16:43):
has he been dropped? Because if they move a midfield
to the fullback, I imagine Rico would go back into
the midfield. Maybe Procter plays at second Rico at center.

Speaker 8 (16:51):
If they're going to use Jordie at the back, the.

Speaker 9 (16:53):
Question is does the coach does Razor have the blades
to actually make some big calls, including naming a new captain.

Speaker 3 (17:02):
It's impossible to tell because even if he does make
several changes, have he made the right one? Is it
purely depending on the result, or does it carry on
this up and down rhythm that it's got to think
he's damned to he doesn't. He damned if he doesn't.

Speaker 9 (17:18):
Well Marshall obviously the commentator for Sky the Great Halfback
that he says that the Abs are looking like robots
and we're a bit visionists. We're not playing what's ahead
of us. So is it not only is it going
to involve an attitudinal change?

Speaker 8 (17:32):
Is it going to involve a strategy change?

Speaker 9 (17:35):
Is he going to give them more rope to play
in front of them or is he actually going to
predetermine a lot more things? You're dead right, there's so
many untangible, so many questions. Are wonderful to see that
Cody Taylor, all the signals are that he's going to
be back.

Speaker 8 (17:48):
Boy do we miss him.

Speaker 9 (17:48):
In the last game, Colstas showed that he's just not
quite the man under the pressure in that white hot
atmosphere against the box.

Speaker 8 (17:56):
Yeah, I think he has to make changes.

Speaker 9 (17:58):
If he doesn't does he's saying that this is acceptable,
which clearly it's not acceptable.

Speaker 3 (18:03):
Two things to address. One of them is under the
high ball. The second thing, and this has been a
long time. This is just not raisor Robertson. It's how
not to fall apart in the last twenty minutes. You
got a magic plan, have you?

Speaker 8 (18:15):
Howard?

Speaker 9 (18:16):
Well, we've got to score some points. That's been our
Achilles heel. It was last year and this year it's
not a hell of a lot better. So is it composure?
Is it leadership? Is it attitude?

Speaker 8 (18:29):
You know?

Speaker 9 (18:29):
Is Artie severe the mean to lead in the university?
Let Scott's Barrett do his thing? Is Scott Barrett? Should
he start? Should Fabian hollandby in the I find that
he was magnificent against the French B team and I
think he has more value starting than coming off the bench.
So yeah, Raiser's got to make some decisions and the players.

Speaker 8 (18:48):
Are going to look in the mirror. The only solace
I can.

Speaker 9 (18:51):
Say is that that thirty three point hiding bigger than
one hundred and twenty two years.

Speaker 8 (18:55):
They had a quick look at boch history.

Speaker 9 (18:56):
They've had a fifty seven millin loss at North Harbor
Stadium twenty seventeen of twenty sixteen, they lost fifty seven
to fifteen at Durbin to the All Blacks forty two
points as their biggest home loss and even lost to
fifty points by the Palms in two thousand and two
three to three. So while we got flogged by thirty
three points, the Box have had three fifty point floggings
in the history.

Speaker 3 (19:15):
Nicely said nicely research Howard did W Dobson. Thanks very
much for joining us in the chamber. It's been a
pleasurable invite you back.

Speaker 8 (19:22):
Cheers, dars All good my friend leading a vix.
