Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from News Talks. It'd be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Welcome on into the Sports Next podcast, The Grave. It
is the twenty seventh of August twenty twenty five. Thanks
as always to DJ Gardner Holmes, New Zealand's now trusted
home builder for supporting this podcast. Coming up in the
show today, I'll have a chat with Professor Doug King
here is a professor of neuroscience around concussions. In light

(00:42):
of the horrible news today about the death of Shank Christy,
I've got some opinion around the naysays when it comes
to the lopsided scores and the opening round of the
Rugby World Cup four women, and I'll be joined in
the chamber by Jeff mctainsch sportscaster out of Sky Sport
too toss around a couple of the big issues of

(01:05):
the day. That's what we plan on doing, so let's
in other news Today's bite sized vocal contributions others. The
World Cup has attracted some criticism around some lopsided first
round results. The expanded competition has resulted in the first
up pall matches averaging a margin of victory of forty

(01:29):
seven points across eight games. Competition director Evonne Nolan has
defended those results.

Speaker 3 (01:36):
If you like free flowing rugby and you like to
see tries, you're seeing it. If you like an arm wrestle,
it will come. These matches are going to get tighter
and tighter as we get through the pulls and into
the knockods.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Hey, the more teams exposed that this level can only
be good for the women's game right. KWE tennis player
k P. Panner was good with the new local wildcard
system the ASB Classic. He missed his chance last year
due to a tournament clash. The new format will put
an end to BET.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
I chose to go and played because in my eyes,
I was guaranteed a main draw opportunity at a one
hundred k event, where if I was to forego there
then I was giving myself a possibility to play.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Auckland and Mile Wilson has gone cross town the fifty
two Camp. Silver Fern has left the Stars for life
as a mystic in the A and Z Premiership. At
least he's not going to Ozzie.

Speaker 5 (02:33):
Both myself and the club knew it was coming to
a time where we both wanted to go in a
different direction. I had given one hundred percent of me
for nine years, and sometimes it change is a good thing,
and I'm grateful for the moments and the journey that
I did have with Stars, and it's turning my head
into watch me.

Speaker 2 (02:48):
There are your fix quick cuts from Sport Today.

Speaker 6 (02:53):
News and opinion.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
It's Sports X with Dancy Valdegrave.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Doug King joins us now. He's a professor of neuroscience
from a ut as we look at at the content
new development of understanding CTA and concussion in light of
the tragic death of Shane Christy. Welcome to the program
that Doug tell us about the education. Is there enough education?

(03:22):
Is there relevant education? Is it out there?

Speaker 7 (03:26):
The education's out there, but not enough of it. I
keep referring to it being one hundred meters sprint. We're
only about sixty meters at the moment.

Speaker 6 (03:35):
I reckon what's the reticence?

Speaker 2 (03:37):
Why do you think it isn't out there? Because I
think it's widely known amongst the sporting community. This is
a thing. Twenty years ago it wasn't, but it is now,
So why they're holding.

Speaker 7 (03:47):
Back twenty years ago, the concussions were still there, but
the people weren't as big a fit as strong and
since the professionalism of rugby union, that's when we've seen
the big differences come in. It's also changed the way
that they've managed it and it's become more of a
noticeable injury. The problem is that everyone thinks that it's
a it's okay to go out there and playing get

(04:09):
bashed around, and also the way that they manage the concussions.
I believe that we're not doing it the justice that
it actually deserves.

Speaker 2 (04:17):
They have a small stand down period if you are concussed,
they go through the HIH situation. They determine that they
step you down for a couple of weeks. Is that
not enough? Does there need to be more?

Speaker 8 (04:29):
Yes, it does need to be more.

Speaker 7 (04:31):
I mean research, I've done research that Steve Caurrow has
done and recent research Whale and Pierce over in Australia
have identified that a minimum of twenty eight days for
any concussion is required before they actually go.

Speaker 8 (04:44):
Back to training and doing everything else.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
I'm of the personal belief that if you've got a
broken arm, you've got a cast on it, we can
X ray it and see that it doesn't hell. But
if the symptoms go away normally in about eight to
ten days, So if we're going to treat a brain
like a broken arm, then why don't we just take
the cast off it ten days because we all know
we're going to rebreak it.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
How much more are we learning about CTE? We know
it is prevalent. There's a lot of research by yourself.
Yes it's Stephen Kara are actually human the like too,
So it's out there. Are we making advances on understanding
this more?

Speaker 7 (05:19):
There's recent advances going into what it is and how
it's affecting people and what's going on. The difficulty is
trying to identify it from an early age, and that's
what everyone's now scrambling for as to how can we
identify this? I think we need to even go a
step further and look at how we can manage the

(05:41):
concussions previously.

Speaker 8 (05:42):
And it's not just sports concussion.

Speaker 7 (05:44):
I mean sports only accounts for about twenty percent of
all the acc claims in this country. So we need
to look at what we're doing with the whole management
to actually before we even develop CTE. And it's even
identified in papers published recently in domestic violence that CTE
has been prevalent in some females that have been victims

(06:06):
of US.

Speaker 2 (06:07):
From a sporting perspective, from a rugby perspective, you identified
what it takes to start ct often at what age
and is there any a section of society, male female
youth that they're more open to experiencing the effects of
this three head knocks.

Speaker 8 (06:25):
Well, there's a variety of thing.

Speaker 7 (06:26):
I mean, studies that have come out from the States
through the Boston Brain Bank of shown that there were
more people with CTE that had contact sports such as
tackling prior to the age of twelve.

Speaker 8 (06:38):
Than over the age of twelve.

Speaker 7 (06:40):
So there's a factor that may come into play, and
that's why they like football is saying let's stop the
heading at age twelve to fourteen. It's the other areas
that females suffer more concussions of a longer duration and
have more symptoms simply because of the biology of them,
can win compared to males.

Speaker 8 (06:59):
So there's not just one factor.

Speaker 7 (07:01):
There's a variety of factors that are going on that
can cause these injuries and can cause complications from them.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
They've got a child playing the game starts off at
a young age. You're aware of this issue. What can
you do not to shield your child from that? Because
obviously just say don't play the game. But what should
you put in place as a parent to make sure
that your child is going to be in the best
position not to attract this? Is there such a thing

(07:29):
can you do that?

Speaker 7 (07:32):
I would personally like to see things such as say
riper rugby until age twelve, that they're not tackling, they're
learning that and they're learning a technique by going around
the waist, which is where the tackle should be. So
that's a learned response that's going to help them in
the later life. The concussion management should be longer. You
actually take longer off and become more aware that it's

(07:53):
not just a simple bang on the head and that
we can do more with them. So there's other areas
that you know, concussion recovery. Every concussion should be actually
managed through some medical service. So we need more postconcussions
services out there. I mean, that's in an ideal world,
we just don't have it.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's sportsfex with Dancy Waldegrave.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
I can't quite believe the criticism of the Rugby World
Cup that's currently going on in England. The women's competition
has been expanded to sixteen teams and as a direct result,
there have been some lopsided results over the opening rounds.
Lopsided to the degree that the average winning margin has

(08:41):
been forty seven points. This is going to happen when
you introduce new teams to the highest level in rugby.
This is how new nations involved in the World Cup
make strides toward being the best players that they can be. Granted,
it's slightly on the embarrassing side, but as we get

(09:03):
toward the point at the end of the competition, we're
going to start seeing tightly can tested and close fixtures.
Cast your mind back to the old days of the
men's Rugby World Cup, some outrageous scores, some huge margins,
and yeah there was some criticism there too, But a

(09:25):
number of these teams have taken the lessons from those
poundings and they've advanced their game. You have to expose
the women's game at that mid level to the top
level in order to encourage improvement. Complaining about the lopsided
scores in pool play in the Rugby World Cup beggars belief.

(09:48):
It is about expanding the horizons of the game. It
is about aspirational and inspirational stories for our young Mahena
to develop, to move forward, to get to that higher
level in the game, you've got to start somewhere. Expanding
the number of teams involved is hugely imploy for the

(10:08):
strength of women's rugby globally. Get amongst.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
The Chamber is now in session on SPORTSFECTX.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
That is a big warm welcome to the chamber to
Jeff mc tanks from sky Sport. Jeff, thanks very much
for joining us here in the chamber. Looking forward to
your wisdom. My friend mate, I.

Speaker 9 (10:29):
Think this is the first time I've actually been in
a chamber on my own a court, so this is great.

Speaker 2 (10:35):
Yeah, well you can't get out. I've got the key.
Let's talk to some of the big sports stories of
the day and I think the one that's really a
grab to me is sixteen All blacks are being made
available this weekend for NPC. Now normally they leaked them back,
but on mass what is this saying to you?

Speaker 6 (10:53):
What's saying to me is that guys need some rugby.

Speaker 9 (10:56):
You know, it's all very well being away with you
all blacks for a few weeks on a tour and
you know, it's a good time being an Argentina. I'm
sure some steaks, some red wine and the first that
went and quart of it, but they're not not a great.

Speaker 6 (11:07):
Weekend by the side.

Speaker 9 (11:08):
So there's a few guys there that are due for
some footy and you know, certainly if they're going to
be utilized ahead of the spring Box, you know, Raiser
needs these guys to have some game time. So it's
a big one for a big one for the Unions
getting guys back. I think probably the team that's benefiting
the most is what with a Ranfilly shield defense against
Southland on Sunday, so they get Anton Leader Brown, Luke

(11:29):
Jacobson something benefit no Onlin Norris. But depending on depending
on how how coach sees for who knows who will play,
whether all of them will play or someone will get
sprinkled in. But certainly they're they're benefiting from from getting
some all blacks back.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
It's good to see since Raises turned up. They're not
protecting players. I mean thing the last couple of years,
like you go and play super rugby, get some rugby
and you yeah, play MPC. The importance of game time
has not lost on Razor. But in saying that he's
got some big decisions to make next week, how many
of the guys are coming back might even be in

(12:06):
that conversation to start, And I suppose Caleb Clark would
be the big one, wouldn't he And the possibility of
Ammoni in Narawa? Maybe Leroy Carter? Because wing is an issue,
isn't it?

Speaker 6 (12:18):
It is? And the issue at wing is high ball.

Speaker 9 (12:21):
You know that that is what the All Blacks struggled
with in Argentina and have struggled with for a week
while now is dealing with high ball pressure and certainly
you know, playing the spring Box, that is what's going
to come. And it's all very el So we know
what the Springboks are going to bring yere. You do,
but can you deal with it? Can you handle it?
Can you diffuse it? And you know, certainly the way
that the All Blocks played in Buenos Aire is the

(12:41):
answer to that question is probably no. So certainly I
think Will Jordan's still class. He probably just had a
quiet game, but they were dominated the back line. The
Argentinian back line completely outshone the All Blacks.

Speaker 6 (12:53):
It says a lot.

Speaker 9 (12:54):
When Finlay Christia wasn't even in the conversation a few
weeks ago. You fall short on half back, he gets
put in he's one of your best players.

Speaker 6 (13:00):
So that to me that said a lot.

Speaker 9 (13:02):
But I think change is necessary, you know that that
would be the the thing I would say coming out
of Argentina is they're going to have to make a
few changes.

Speaker 6 (13:11):
And guys that can deal with the ball earlier. Key.

Speaker 9 (13:13):
So does Reuben Love does he come into the conversation,
Leroy Carter? Does he get an opportunity? Jordi Barrett. One
of his best parts of his skill set is high ball,
is fielding the high ball, so we know he's played
a lot of fallback as well and for the All Blacks,
So does he come into the mix? So they bringing
Will Jordan onto the right wing. I'm not sure sure
what they do, but certainly that's one of the areas

(13:34):
they're going to have to look at. So yeah, I'd
say there will be changing the back three, potentially a
tweak in the midfield as well. So you know it's
another opportunity for these guys like Leroy Carter, Moni Nadawa
to come out on the weekend and again put their
best foot for But I expect some change for the
box for sure.

Speaker 2 (13:49):
If there's been discussion around the possibility has been raised
by a few journals of maybe the SOS needs to
go out to Aaron Smith. When you look at the
half back stocks, what about Kyle Preston. That would be
a stretch on the bench. But is that a possibility
because he's back with you talk about the White couple tea.
You've got Kyle Preston, Peter like Kai, Rubin Love and

(14:11):
Sophore Moore all coming back for Wellington too. That's a
wonderful cavalry to have, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (14:17):
It is?

Speaker 9 (14:17):
And I can't see I can't see getting any any
easy unfortunately for Auckland certainly a tough ass going and
playing Wellington with these you say, thosef mentioned players.

Speaker 6 (14:27):
But my take on the half back thing is, yeah, you.

Speaker 9 (14:30):
Can talk about bringing an all black legend back and
Aaron Smith.

Speaker 6 (14:33):
But is that the right thing to do because he's
not going to be playing at the World Cup in
twenty twenty seven.

Speaker 8 (14:37):
But it's not.

Speaker 6 (14:38):
That's not just leave Aaron alone, leave him alone. Let's
look at what we've got in the cupboard. And as
you said, one of those guys is Kyle Preston. And
you know what does it say to Cole Preston if.

Speaker 9 (14:50):
Raser suddenly goes on, I actually will bring in Nuggie,
will bring in someone else.

Speaker 6 (14:54):
From outside of the group and give them, give them
a crack. You don't do that. You give Kyle Preston
the opportunity that he's earned.

Speaker 9 (14:59):
He's earned his selection, so you give him the go
and maybe you bring a guy back that is on
the fringe, that has been in an all black jersey before,
maybe a fucka Tava, someone like that.

Speaker 6 (15:08):
It's an opportunity. Maybe it's an opportunity to bring early doors.

Speaker 9 (15:11):
But a guy like Dylan Pledger into the group at
least you know, to see what's going on in an
all black environment. So I think there are things that
they could be doing in the next few weeks. As
I say, to give guys an opportunity to look at
the environment and look at the culture, look at the group.

Speaker 6 (15:24):
But you maybe bring back a.

Speaker 9 (15:25):
Guy that's actually played some test rugby that's on the
French not a guy that's retired.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Let's move on to the Bulldogs. Now taking on the
Pmwouth Panthers. Now the Pmworth Panthers have given up all
chants of getting into the top four because they're going
to rely on so many teams to lose. The results
have got to go their way and it's a mathematical chance.
But we know what they are. But sixteen changes? Is
this taking the perce or what is this good for

(15:50):
the game? Is it good for the team? Is it
good for the bulldogs, the fans, the TV networks? How
does that sit with you?

Speaker 9 (15:57):
Well, look, if you believe Phil Orphel, it's it's an
absolute disgrace.

Speaker 6 (16:01):
With his words and a few.

Speaker 9 (16:03):
Other pundits have had a few more choice choice words
too for what Ivan clari has decided to do.

Speaker 6 (16:08):
So but look, he's the master coach that they're the
master team. They have been for a few years. They
are the champions.

Speaker 9 (16:14):
Look, I think if anyone has the right to make
a move like this and make sixteen changes ahead of
a final series, it's Ivan Cleary because how could you
bet against a man like that who's master minded the
success that the Penrith Pants have had in recent times.
It's been it's been unmatched, it's been tremendous. So look,
I think we'll wait and see. But certainly if you're

(16:36):
a Warriors fan, rejoiced because the Warriors just need to
beat Paramatta and.

Speaker 6 (16:40):
It's it's it's up.

Speaker 9 (16:41):
They don't do that, they give the Broncos a sniff,
but of course Broncos have got Cowboys away and then
they've got the Storm to finish in the final round.
So very much box seat now for if you're a
Wars fan, but for Penrith sixteen sixteen changes, I suppose
when you're playing the Storm and the Raiders in the
last couple of weeks, we saw what happened in that
camera game is from of the most unbelievable finishes to
a game of sport.

Speaker 6 (17:01):
I think we've ever seen you.

Speaker 9 (17:04):
So for them, I think when you when you when
you're putting Ivans had on and you're looking at that
two hard weeks, two top top of the table teams
physical encounters, you know he's probably gone, look, it's going
to be a tough ask anyway mathematically to make it
against the Wars and Broncos and so on. So he's
probably just put his chips on the table and said,
we're not going to make the top four. It's chance

(17:26):
to give these guys you know, namely Nathan his son,
an opportunity to have a bit of a breather and
size up, size up the finals campaign. Because all things
being equal, we're sitting here in a few weeks time
going oh, actually.

Speaker 6 (17:39):
That wasn't a bad move. After all, they come in
and storm through that. They stormed through the finals. So yeah,
it looks bad from a broadcasters perspective.

Speaker 9 (17:47):
Year sure the fans miss out, but you miss out
for a week, you miss out for a week, you
been if you get your.

Speaker 6 (17:52):
Top side back in a week or two.

Speaker 9 (17:54):
So I think it might be a master stroke from
the master coach.

Speaker 2 (17:58):
And Bulldogs be warned. Just remember what the Warriors facing
the Titans with a handful of injuries and that blob
and they're faced and it Hey, Jeff mctaints out of
the chambu go thanks so much for you have a
wonderful rest of your week. Thanks for your time.

Speaker 6 (18:11):
