world of sport for today Wednesday in twenty ninth of
October twenty twenty five, will be joined by Tina form
All womb All Black Skipper, of course, part of the
(00:42):
team that won the Grand Slam back in two thousand
and five.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
We'll talk to him as we look.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Forward to the twenty twenty five Grand Slam edition. I've
got some opinion around the long running saga of netball
New Zealm versus Dame Nolin Tarua. And we'll be joined
in the chamber by New Zealand Herald sports news writer
mister Alex Powell as we look at a couple of
the big sports stories of the day. That's the plan stands.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
Let's get a monks in other news.
Speaker 3 (01:11):
In the swamp of sport today. I've fetched out this
last we forget the all Black defeat at the hands
of the Irish for the very first time back in
twenty sixteen, triggered and astonishing keen years of fierce rivalry.
Ab Lucy Simon Parker was sixteen at the time and
he remembers the pain.
Speaker 5 (01:30):
I remember watching it and obviously Holland came out and
what was it called?
Speaker 6 (01:33):
Might just remember.
Speaker 4 (01:34):
The cameras strown up.
Speaker 5 (01:36):
We're going to hell over Bilberts were seeing their faces
ossy down to have a repeat of that.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
The Oceania Football Pro League was launched today at Eden Park.
The new kids, the South Island United teams are using
the opportunity to compare notes with other franchises. They don't
need any thoughts though on their strip. GM Ryan Edwards says,
dad's been sorted.
Speaker 7 (01:58):
We're going with a white, black and Mama Green and
our three colors with a four color being gold as
our four colors going forward.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
And Dame Nolen Todour is to return to a silver
Fern's coaching role. But there is a process in place,
says CEO of netpl and Z Jimmy Wiley.
Speaker 8 (02:19):
Our interim coaches will remain with the Ferns over the
next few months and that allows us that time to
work when we're not in a player faking environment, to
sure up the systems that will be required and will
provide the safeguards for everybody.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
And there's your quick hit of sport today.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
U Scada Bean, It's SPORTSFX with Dancy Valdegrave as a
warm up.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Welcome now to the Sports Fixed podcast at Tana Umang,
a former All Black, former All Black captain, as we
take a look at the glory of the Grand Slam
Tour one of course, that he was involved in back
in two thousand and five. Good Tana, I'm very well.
I'm looking forward to what's going to be a massive
few weeks of rugby in the Northern Hemisphere, carrying the
(03:06):
pressure of a Grand Slam. You know what it's like.
Could that get in the way of what's going on
or indeed do you actually so? No, this is the
purpose of this. We must make that the purpose of
what we're doing here. We need to win this Grand Slam.
Is that good pressure? Bad pressure, a pain in the
backside pressure?
Speaker 5 (03:24):
Tanner, Well, look, I think it's a pressure that's always there.
You know, you can't get away from it. And the
idea is obviously that that is what we're on this
tour to do. You know, I think that's what he's
got to explain. I'm sure that he's explained to his player,
this is what we're here to do. You know, we
want to achieve that, but to get there, you know,
we've got to start here and put these pieces together.
Speaker 4 (03:45):
You know, the.
Speaker 5 (03:47):
Expectation of a Grand Slam from us as a nation
is is always going to be there upon him and
I'm sure it's there, you know, for the players to
always think about in the back of their minds that
you know, shut someone a book put my name as
a Grand Slam winner and someone that's achieved that as well.
You know, these guys have got some huge accolades alongside
their names as it is. Yet, as you know, it's
(04:10):
the steps prior to getting there that's what they've got
to focus on. We know the prize at the end,
but the price won't come unless we take these steps going.
Speaker 6 (04:18):
Forward, So you can't put too much on it.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
It means the world, he said, individual test matches, yes,
but combining them all and this is something that Racis
had struggled with so far as well as like match
after match after match, but that is a that's a
great part of the Grand Slam, and you'd embrace that totally,
which is what you guys did back in two thousand
and five.
Speaker 4 (04:39):
Yeah, yeah, that's right. I think you said it, and
you've got to embrace it.
Speaker 5 (04:43):
You know, it is what it is, you know, and
the more we hide away from it, the more you
actually probably lose focus on what you need to do
because you just got to accept that's what it is.
And then you know, a good challenge for them now.
I think you just stated again, how can we be
(05:03):
consistent around you know, what we do weekend week out,
because that's what will take to win full games on
the trot, you know, and you know that's what we're
all excited to watch and see.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
It's the most difficult opponent that you can see in
this tour, four different teams across four different places, in fact,
two different nations. Where is the biggest threat?
Speaker 4 (05:25):
Do you believe, James? There's a couple of things, you know,
just just listening to a.
Speaker 5 (05:31):
Few of the narratives around around around Ireland, because that's
their first test, you know, there's there's talk that you know,
have they run their run, you know, like been around
too long? You know, I read something about that and
heard something about that the other day, and I'm sure
that's they're probably not listening to that, but you know,
(05:52):
sometimes you came back from it. You know, there's that
they've got a bit of revenge to you know, around
New Zealand and Ireland. And again there's talk that they're
on the down the klin I think, and you know,
these things are all talk, but I'm sure they're all
motivational things to it, like as in case you've got
to use some of these is, some of these these things.
(06:13):
And that's interesting for me because I think both sides
are motivated for it, and they're going back to the States.
I think, again my memory is not what it used
to me, but I think the last time they're in
the States, did did Ireland win? You know, So there's
all that kind of stuff that you play into it.
(06:34):
And then you know the English and the Scottish share
their teams on the up. You know, England look powerful
beast and I think they've you know, they've shown that.
You know, there were again there was talk around them
on they were declined a few years ago. Now you
know that they beat us at home not long ago,
and you know, I think that their rugby has only
(06:55):
got stronger, and with a team that's got Finn Russell
and how can you how can you count them out?
Speaker 2 (07:01):
You know?
Speaker 5 (07:01):
So and the way that the Scottish play, all these
guys are at home, you know those guys sid.
Speaker 4 (07:10):
I know I've left Wales still last, but you know
that they're struggling.
Speaker 5 (07:13):
Obviously we've got a Welshman on the great Stephen Jones
on our coach leing staff, you know, and poor guy
has been given a bit of hate and from us
around what's happening in Wales. Yet again their at home.
You know, I think there's a side that that you know,
they've got nothing to lose. They've got a new coaching
group and you know a lot of a lot of
(07:34):
changes that have happened in their union. So these are
these things that they'll probably dissected and which ones when
you talk about rotation and if they can, you know
they'll be looking at these ones in terms of week
and I play who and which ones do I need
to you know, are the main games for them?
Speaker 4 (07:56):
And that we've definitely got to get the key results.
Speaker 5 (08:00):
So you know, there's a lot of things that go
a lot of thinking that goes into the process of,
you know, putting your team together for the games that
they're up against Ford.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
Is it do you reckon the All Blacks can do this?
Where are your confidence levels at?
Speaker 4 (08:11):
Donner? Oh? Look, I have total faith and the All Blacks.
I always will.
Speaker 5 (08:19):
Sometimes that's blind faith because I'm such a big fan
of the All Blacks and.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
Our nations.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
So you know, I was fortunate enough to spend a
little bit of time with the team while they're in Auckland.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
And you know, you can just see it on there.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
You know, they're giving everything they can, you know, for
the jersey and for the for their countries and their families.
So I think that's all you can ask. And as
long as they realize that, you know, we're behind them
and and they can get it up, get up together
and do it for each other, then you know that's
all that's all we can ask. But yeah, every faith
(08:55):
the All Blacks will get the job done.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Dissecting the sporting agenda, it's Sports Fix with Dancy Walter.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Grave, so will Dane Noline Toto actually come back and
start coaching the Silver Ferns again. On the face of it, yeah,
she will finally a Netball New Zealand and the Dame
have come to some agreement. Not that we know the
details of that agreement. It's none of our business, according
to one of the key parties, but they've come to
(09:24):
an agreement and the Dame will be back in the
role at the end of the year after the Northern
tour of the Silver Ferns. You go nice and tidy
with a bowl, beautiful. It won't end like this. It
can't end like this. There is still so much more
that needs to be revealed around what happened, what the
(09:45):
breakdown was between the players, the Players Association, Dame nol Lean,
New Zealand netborne. If you think wef they think now
that they've said she's back, this is all going to
go away. We are picking up a rug and brushing
the dirt of.
Speaker 6 (10:02):
This underneath it.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
The media and the public want to know more. They
deserve to know more, not from a purely nosy point
of view, but because we don't want to see this
happen again, and surely people at Netball New Zealand don't
want to see this happen again, either the confidence and
the coaching staff, the confidence in their head coach heavily
(10:25):
eroded by the decisions made by Netball New Zealand, all
shrouded in a cloak of mystery. In order to avoid
this kind of chaos occurring again, we need to dig deeper.
Oh won't say we need an investigation like Jeff Tuv,
but it's got to be close. These mistakes will be
repeated if we don't know where they came from. So
(10:48):
we need information from Netball New Zealand. We need to
know what happened. We need to know how it happened.
We need to know how it unraveled so quickly and
how it took so long to wind it back up again.
It has been a very messy period for New Zealand
netball and we'd love to see the back of it.
But for the future of New Zealand netball to be
(11:10):
in a sound place, we need to know more girls
playing good netball. Though, And funny they give Dame nole
In a job back again, and that very night the
silver ferns turn around and smash the diamonds. That says
a lot, but hey, there will be more so don't
put down your popcorn yet. We haven't heard the end.
Speaker 6 (11:30):
Of this story.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
The Chamber is now in session on Sportsfix War.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Welcome and to the Chamber to Alex Powell, sports news
writer for The New Zealand.
Speaker 6 (11:40):
Here, okay, mate, how are you all right? Mate? How
are you welcome back here?
Speaker 3 (11:43):
Thank you very much. Now I'm feeling good. I'm still walking.
I managed to survive the amount of metal taken out
of my knee.
Speaker 6 (11:49):
So that's good. Oh, got on the bears by our
group chat standards.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, absolutely right. Let's look at the day's sports stories.
We're only halfway through what's happening in Hamilton at the moment.
Speaker 4 (11:59):
But you look at this.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
This is a possibility of ten consecutive one Dance National
Series wins by the black Caps. Do you think that's
un played? The look on your face ges it is.
Speaker 4 (12:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (12:11):
I mean I cover cricket and I had actually no
idea that that was the number. Yeah. I think we
are a very good fifty over team. You look at
you know what they do, not just on the series basis,
but every time there's a world tournament where they're or thereabouts.
So if it's ten on the bounce. It's ten on
the bounce and it's probably well deserved. You look at
this catch that we're watching now, where Will Young's gone
horizontal to get rid of Harry Brook and that this
(12:33):
is great for the audio medium. But you're right, the
fifty over game just sort of suits what New Zealand
are good at.
Speaker 3 (12:40):
Does the fact that England are rubbish make Should we
talk about that or not? Because they're down the bottom
of the world rankings, We're right up now the top.
Now you look at what they can do in T twenty.
How come it's not transferring?
Speaker 6 (12:52):
Well, you look at what England do domestic level. They
don't play a lot of fifty over cricket or they
play the one hundred don't play one hundred at the
same time. So unless you're picking guys straight out of
fifty over cricket into internationals, which means they're not among
those sort of best group of players, they're not playing
a lot of the fifty over game. A guy like
Harry Brook, I think he's played more than half of
his fifty other matches are internationals, which is insane to
(13:15):
think about.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
So what does that mean on a wider scale? Is
this the dribbling away of one day international cricket. It's
also maybe for me saying that the difference between T
twenty between the one hundred between one day internationals is a.
Speaker 6 (13:31):
Whole lot broader than we'd like to think.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
They're very different games.
Speaker 6 (13:34):
They're very different games. I do worry fifty other cricket.
It feels like we have this conversation every four years,
you know, normally around the World Cup, where we say, well,
what is the future of fifty over Crecker And then
it turns out it's probably, pound for pound the most
entertaining version of the game. You know, T twenty cricket,
it just turns into baseball, especially where the game is now.
You've just got guys trying to clear the fences from
ball one. Test cricket. Love it to bits, but it
(13:57):
does take a while to get to the climax, and
you think of, you know, playing it over five days,
if you know the time constraints people have. Now it's
not necessarily the most welcoming game, whereas fifty over Creger
you get the EBB and the flow and you get
a result in one day.
Speaker 3 (14:10):
And the best thing about this game, we're actually getting
games in October.
Speaker 4 (14:16):
The weather hasn't been.
Speaker 6 (14:18):
Claimed as it right, Yeah, the great spring of cricket.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
It's another story for another day. He read a story
today around the America's Cup without an American entry.
Speaker 6 (14:28):
Feels wrong, doesn't it.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
I don't know what to feel about it. I just
say a lot about where the America's Cup is right now, though.
Speaker 6 (14:34):
I think it says a lot about how much the
America's Cup costs to run. You look at like a
guy like Larry Ellison who loved it until he wasn't
winning anymore and then pulled the plug. But no, it's
really sad that we won't have, you know, either Oracle
or American magic. But in terms of what that means
for the future of the sport, like I'm I'm actually
not that worried. We've seen a lot of the challenges
over the last couple of rounds. It's always been the Italians.
(14:57):
We've got the British there. I think what the French
are going to be involved over the next one.
Speaker 3 (15:02):
So as long as there are teams, it really doesn't
matter where they're from. The Americans might get a but
percy about it and coming back in a few years
time was a bigger and badder juggernaut to try and
when it back again after having a rest. But from
a fans point of view, when the America's Cup starts,
we'll forget about all that we always do and we'll
look it's right in front of us. Okay, this is
(15:24):
what's in front of us. This is who we're sailing against.
This is how we get victory.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
That's all we care about, right exactly. I mean, no
one seemed to care it was in Barcelona once it started,
did it. No, they were very quickly forgiven we're Team
New Zeland. But you're right, once it starts, we all
get behind them.
Speaker 2 (15:39):
You know.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
That's sort of how it works. It's not necessarily a
sport that's front and center for the four or five
years in between America's Cups. But Team New Zealand are
very well supported in this country.
Speaker 3 (15:49):
We'll get out of the chamber shortly. It's but because
you're a Formula one mate here at the office, you've
got to ask look plainly, the decision around Liam Lawson,
which was coming at the end of the Mexican no
one believed that for a second.
Speaker 6 (16:02):
They did you I didn't, Well, I had it on
very good authority that it was contractually meant to come
by the thirty first of October. All right, So if
Red Bull have pushed that back, it sort of tells
you everything you need to know. You know, they don't
know which way to go. You look at the three drivers,
which are Lamb laws and he's at Kadja and Yuki
Sonoda going for those what we understand to be two
(16:24):
seats given Max for Stappens committed and Avid Limblad will
come up from Formula two into racing balls. They don't
know which way to go. You look at the three drivers.
No one's really done enough to grab the main Red
Bull seat with both hands. You know, Hadja from what
were on stands out in front ahead of the other two,
but he's had up Hoodium and then other than that,
as the results have not been that great since the
(16:44):
summer break, Lawson had that great fifth, Nazerbajahan not done anything.
Yuki Snoda had a really good weekend in Austin, but
he's still finishing. You know, Claster a minute behind his teammates.
So who do you pick?
Speaker 3 (16:55):
Well, you alerted me this a couple of weeks ago,
and then I saw it when it came official in
social media that Hadja and Lawson are the face of
Ford commercials for next year, Ford being the new engine supply.
So you think they probably wouldn't release that to the
wider public if his seat wasn't secured. Did that say a.
Speaker 6 (17:17):
Whole lot any other sport YEP, Formula one, no cast.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
Yeah, thanks for bursting my bubble. Alex Powel, always a
pleasure mate. Thanks very much for joining us in the chamber.
Thanks Mane good Sandy back.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
