Ivy so it's farewell to the lines people At, wimbledon
the year's Third Grand, slam becoming the latest of the
four to kiss goodbye not literally to lines people and
replace them with electronic line calling OR. AI a side
of the, times no, doubt and it's so when for,
accuracy but for. Me it takes away from the human
(03:12):
elements of the. SPORT i don't know WHY i feel
so sad that the lines people Of wimbledon are GOING
i think it's the tradition more than. Anything and GENERALLY
i think technology has been a blight on most. Sports
it's shocking in. Football rugby still hasn't got it. Right
league has its, Issues cricket has had its. Issues it
has never been implemented. Correctly but when tennis does it
(03:34):
and it's more, accurate it still leaves me with a
little bit of a sour taste in my. Mouth and
tennis is probably the one sport that is by and
large got it. Right. First they had the hawk eye
challenges for the calls that players could send upstairs if
they thought it was in or, out as the case
may have. Been tennis is probably the perfect sport to
implement electronic line. Calling it's very, definitive it's in or.
(03:56):
Out there's not much great area between the. Two but
still it leaves me a little bit. COLD i like
the lines, PEOPLE i like the character of the, COURT
i like the human nature of, it and it feels
like we're losing a bit by going to.

Newstalkszbb great pleasure to welcome in former top level Referee
Vinnie monroe to the show here On News TALK. Zbb,
Vinnie good, Evening Hello. Elliott, well look At test rugby
is on the horizon once again and as we roll
Into test, season we park what we learned In super
rugby from a refereeing perspective and get Into test. Rugby
(04:39):
look At vinnie is a little bit of refereeing whiplashes
sort of the rules and interpretations and edicts go around
because players have been used to one rule In super,
rugby then they have to adapt to different interpretations when
they get into The test.
Speaker 5 (04:53):
Arena very much, so and again the challenge that they
have as players to adapt to wat's in front of
them or what's been. OFFICIATED i think the pleasing thing
looking at what The All blacks are going to face
in the next three weeks is Two australians in A
Georgian so that's not as bad as it is or has.
(05:16):
Been but, look this has been going on for, years
probably since the inception Of super, rugby Where Super rugby
have played with different rules to try and make it
more of an entertainment for the public and in some
ways that. Succeeded but Will rugby don't always take on
what they planning or have.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
Done Does Super rugby therefore prepare test players well enough
in that regard for what comes in, tests Given Super
rugby prioritizes entertainment over perhaps the officiating Tests rugby probably
is at the point where it's the other way.
Speaker 5 (05:46):
Around, yes it is and. LOOKS i think that's the
ability of a coaching or management team within the teams
like The All, blacks that they have to prepare their
players for the change and it can be quite a drastic,
change and depending on where the referees come, from and
that we know there is a very much whether it's
(06:07):
perception is reality that they officiate differently in The Northern
hemisphere to the Subn that has been the same for,
many many years AND i can't see it. Changing but
it's like, anything whether you're playing under, eights, hundred, tens
Twenties All, blacks you've got to adapt to what the
referee is doing and the person or the team that
adapts the quickest will get the best.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Deal do you think in that, regard maybe The french
should better suitor because their referees are being exposed to
more of that style of referees up.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
North, look familiarity is a big thing these. Days and
look That world panel doesn't change too. Much you, know
they're probably in between the teams like it doesn't go
to A World. Cup they probably look at twenty or early,
twenties so they'll experience all of. Them but you're going
to put it from a referee, perspective they're not going
(06:58):
to go out and be really left field and make it.
Difficult because their careers are on the. Line they're going
to referee as much as they can to the law
book allow for, advantage except which is always a problem
the different. Hemispheres but they've got to be within, reason
and so the players have got to get on with
them and accept who they, are because it's highly likely
(07:20):
that they'll have them at least once, more maybe up
to double figures times in the Next World cup.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
Cycle the over ANALYSIS i suppose of the recollision in
rugby as a form of referee is do you think
that's a good space for the rugby to be in
where we are currently.
Speaker 5 (07:38):
Certainly change the game and at times it's not a
very good spectacle because we're waiting waiting for a decision
when they go upstairs and cheap. That but you've got
to counter that with the welfare of, players and, look
the world's, changed so, yes you do need to look
after them and get the right help as early as
(07:58):
possible to stop the mitigation of what might come through
later against The union or the world, rugby which is
happening now and certainly in The Northern hemisphere.
Speaker 3 (08:08):
World rugby refereeing boss is understood to have basically demanded
sort of you, know and that high level analysis of rugby.
Games so when you've got the boss telling you that's
what you need to, do then obviously the employees being
the referees are going To karto in that, respect aren't
they very?
Speaker 5 (08:25):
Much because, yeah he's the, boss he's one of the.
Selectors so i'd imagine if you go against someone like,
that your future mightn't be too.
Speaker 3 (08:33):
Bright what do you make for any of the microscope
on rugby referees these, days because it feels like it's
really changed from where we were perhaps, ten, fifteen twenty years.
Ago you, know you, know the names and the faces
of the. Referees but now it feels like every little
moment in test match is over analyzed to within an
inch of its life by the, spectators and every mistake
(08:56):
is now picked, up isn't, it you know by the
people at home or watching in the, ground or indeed
the coaches of the respective.
Speaker 5 (09:02):
Teams, yeah look very much, so and certainly a harder
game to be, involved and for that. Reason but you've
got to put it into perspective of how the world's.
Changed we've got social media and we've been down that
bloody head run in recent times of how people can
hide and abuse or, criticize. Etc you're always going to get.
(09:24):
Criticized you're always going to make decisions that are. Analyzed
and it's the best the referee that makes those decisions
and a narrow bit of disparity between right and, wrong
and he gets it right more, often he's going to
be a better. Referee and the ones that can handle,
it learn from their mistakes and take it forward are
the guys that you will see at The World.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Cup The chamber is now in session On.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
Sportsfax time to go to the chamber, now and oh
luckily he's popped. In it is news talk Zb Sports News,
Heay Clay, Wilson welcome to the. Chamber thank, you thank
you for having me well busy on time in, sport of,
course we are standing by at least figuratively for A
All blacks team in the next twenty four hours that
will be, announced the first one of the, year to
(10:09):
Play france On saturday night In. Dunedin, clay how Many
All blacks would you debutantes would you like to see named?
Tomorrow is it time for rays that to put all
the new guns in guns blazing for this?
Speaker 4 (10:21):
Test In, WELL i saw this, Question i'd DECIDED i
want to reframe it a little. BIT i can answer your,
question but then reframe it in that you, know this
is a three match. Series obviously there's a number of
debutants in the mix to get their first cap for
The All. Blacks BUT i think for me first test
of the, season you don't want to play more than
you need. To you want to hit the ground, running
(10:43):
you want to focus on, winning and then after that
you've named these. Debutantes we're in what the second year
of A World cup. Cycle this is the time to
start perhaps giving some of those guys a. Run you
wouldn't pick them if you didn't think they were capable
of stepping up to that. Level so for my first
twenty three of the, Year i've got just the, two
AND i feel like it's in an area that probably
(11:05):
just necessitated necessitated it through injury obviously in the loose,
forwards So i've just gone For christian leo'willie at eight
obviously with No wallace A titi. There and then obviously
you've got plenty of options in terms of who you
put on the bench to cover the loose, forwards and
the locks come into that as, well But i've Put
Dupless carefi in there as. Well so just the. TWO
(11:28):
i played around with some, others BUT i think those
others that are in the mix the, YEAR i would
definitely want to see them In test, two if Not test,
three because LIKE i, say you don't don't pack them
if you don't want to give them a. Run and
we're only in the second year of this, cycle SO
i don't know how that lines up with what you've,
got but that's how water HOW i broke it.
Speaker 3 (11:43):
DOWN i probably have four in. Total i'm thinking Oly
norris potentially off the bench to come in for a
deboo Behind Ethan DeGroot at luciprop And i'm also thinking
Maybe Fabian holland on Home Soil Inverted Commas Fall South
Bar stadium to potentially make a. Deboo but Then patrick Douyp,
blot who hasn't played for a few weeks, either so
(12:06):
there's going to be a bit of a jangling act.
There you mentioned that you've Got Christian Leo willi And
duplascretlyfe in the. MIX i also have. Them the question being, Though,
clay which one is starting and which one comes off the,
bench because that goes into the question of Where Ardie
savia should play open, side flanket or number. Eight so
tell me which one have you got starting and which
one's coming off the.
Speaker 5 (12:26):
Pine.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Yeah, well interestingly because obviously dup C carefi was selected
in the initial squad in the main, squad And Christian
Leo willy was named as an injury backup injury. Cover
but he's the Man i've got to start starting because for,
Me Ardie savier he came in as a, seven and
while he's played all three positions and could play in
(12:47):
all three, positions he's played so well For moana at
SEVEN i think it just makes sense to leave him.
There he's he led that team so, well has played
that position all, year And i'll say it in The
Christian Leo willy for, me was very unlucky not to make.
IT i think he was a really good chance to
make the squad proper before they named. It So i'm
(13:08):
really comfortable with having him. THERE i think he's really
sort of a test ready kind of. Player and then
Do P carefe more of a specialist on the bench at,
Seven but obviously With sav's, Versatility carefe comes, on you
can shuffle shuffle the deck a. Bit you've also GOT
i also Had TUPO vi in my lock mix and
obviously he's someone who can cover the loose forwards as.
(13:29):
Well so that's HOW i kind of played around with.
It but they're all very, capable aren't.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
They they certainly. Are watch the. Space we'll have that
All blacks team for you. Tomorrow moving, onlines people gone At,
wimbledon replaced by the electronic line calling which has been
in place that The australian And open and THE Us.
Open look AM i just a little bit? Sentimental or
is this? Progress? SO i kind of missed the old,
lines people calling out At wimbledon and co and adding
(13:55):
a bit of drama and theater to.
Speaker 4 (13:57):
Things, YEAH i, mean you know us, traditionalists do you,
know is a shame for, us and you see those
things gone and there are certainly things in certain sports
THAT i would like to. Keep but having thought about,
THIS i think for, me this is probably the right.
Move and probably you, know technology in sport is an
(14:18):
off debated, topic isn't. It we always talk about it
here in the office when it comes to var the
bunker in THE, nrl all these. Things but to, me
the use of hawkeye tennis technology is something that's actually
improved the game and made the game not only made
the game more the DECISIONS i guess more, accurate but
has also sped up the game for the, spectator made
(14:40):
it a better entertainment. Product so for, me while it's
a shame on one, SIDE i do understand your point
to see, them to see them kind of get rid
of those. People you, Know it's always, funny isn't you
think about those. People there's such a robotic kind of
figures on the court and their funny little. Uniforms but
it's just something like you, say you always expected to.
(15:00):
SEE i, MEAN i guess if you took umpires out
of a cricket, game it might be a similar kind of.
Effect BUT i think tennis is one of the few
actually where technology and the use of it has actually
improved the game from an entertainment and a view of viewing.
Perspectives so SO i think the right call.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
In the, End you are, right, YEAH i, mean it
is one of the sports that you can kind of
get technology right every time rather THAN vr its interpretations
and rugby and various. Things and, finally if we go
back to, rugby have you Got lions to a? Fever
it's their Second Australian tour game tonight against The queens And.
Reds are you coming down with the case of to a?
Fever is?
Speaker 5 (15:36):
Yet?
Speaker 4 (15:37):
No, No i'm. NOT i think you, know obviously this
is kind of coincided with The All black season, starting
hasn't it so for a lot of, PEOPLE i feel
in this, country your focus is kind of directed in that,
area isn't it the team that the squad that The
All blacks have, selected who are they going to? Pick
(15:58):
what are The french? Doing and, also you know the
first test is what's still two and a half weeks
away against The wallabies over, there so certainly once The
Test series, starts but for me maybe not so much as.
You you're, obviously you, know you're a resident rugby head,
here So i'm Sure i'm sure you've been paying a
(16:18):
little bit more attention to, it but just just a,
fleeting a fleeting interest at this, stage and one of
those things that when The Test series, Starts i'm Sure
i'll be big be tuning in to see to see
what's happening in that series and how they're getting.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
On, yeh have come down with a serious case of
tour fever, Already Play. Walkson thank you very much for
