keeper of the Phoenix. Also of course he's Olly White's
keeper to His name is Alex Paulson back in New
Zealand signed up for Auckland of Football gid A, Alex,
how are you mate? That's a long trip from Wellington
to get to Auckland, isn't it.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
I was actually in France to be fair, and in Paris,
but yeah, and now it's a bit of a trip
to be fair, So yeah, I'm happy to be here.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
I think that it took a few people by surprise.
What about yourself when you signed to play for Bournemouth,
did you have an inkling that you might end up
back with Bill Foley's team here?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Yeah. See, at the end of the day, you know,
being you know, acy Bournemouth player, my intention was to
you know, obviously get loaned off to a club and
you know, Amy Bournemouth have other sister clubs that they
had in mind, and obviously there was a couple of
you know, I was going to have to be loaned
(01:13):
off to one of the sister clubs. Or if it
wasn't to be, then it could have been somebody another club,
either in Europe or or anywhere that they see it
will help progress my my development as much as they can,
and they felt it was appropriate for me to come
to Auckland.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
How much say did you have in that decision?
Speaker 3 (01:31):
I think it was it was an equal amount of
say with regards to myself. We had discussions with formouths,
we had discussions with other clubs as well, so we
just felt like it was the best and you know,
the appropriate move for me to come to Auckland.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
When were you aware that you were going to actually
come back to Auckland, as I mentioned before, did it
come as a shock or did you have a rough idea?
And when did you actually know that you were You're
coming back to New Zealand again.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Yeah, So for me personally, you know, I had discussions,
you know, right throughout my Olympic campaign and I think
at the end of the day, they wanted me to
go to the Olympics as the ABC bomb of player
first and foremost and you know, to be brilliant, honest
everything after that. You know, that's when you know, for
me personally, it just comes out understanding about you know,
(02:22):
the process, the progression that it needs to take for
me to go from New Zealand up into arguably playing
in you know, one of the best leagues in the world.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
Well, you don't want to be difficult, do you, Alex?
You're only a young guy's freshly signed up. You hardly
dig your heels and go No, you don't. I want
to stay here and play in the Premier League.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, I mean everyone's everyone's different. I want to make
sure I'm the best. I'm in the best edition possible today.
It can help and you know, grow my yeah, just
grow my career.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Did you think you're better challenge the like of who's
the incumbent over there? Mark Trevors, isn't it? He was
the guy that maybe you might better knock off it?
How do you compare yourself to him?
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I say that again and it's cutting out.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Talking about the Mark trevis I'll start that again. I
was going to put a mark in there. What about
Mark Treviors, the incumbent born with keeper? How do you
rate yourself compared to him? Are you close to doing
what he could do? Do you do you rate yourself?
Speaker 3 (03:24):
I mean I like to think I rate myself. However,
you know with regards to you know Mac Travis and
you know Netto and Will Dennis. You know that's it's
a competitive it's a competitive spot and ugably you know,
like it's you know, the best league in the world.
You know that we're talking about the Premier League. So like,
you know, me personally, I've got you know, I've got
a lot of things to do. Would be kind of
(03:46):
you know, it would be difficult to think that, you know,
you can go straight from the A League to you
know to the Premier League and you know, get minutes.
You know, it's all about processes, It's all about you know,
stages so that it can help me best repair to
you know, play in Europe consistently.
Speaker 2 (04:01):
So how long are you at a kaf C four.
Is it a set contract or you're over here for
until they want you somewhere else. What's the situation there?
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Yep, So I'm here for the one season and then
hopefully you know, I can go back to Bournemouth and
then you know, start my process and you know, you know,
just keep working hard and keep focusing on you know,
trying to be involved with the team there.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Have you heard from anyone in Wellington Phoenix. I'm sure
they're not exactly bouncing off the roof after what happened there.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
To be honest, I've just shot I just you know,
came back from the Olympics, so to be really honest,
I've just tried to take a break and try to
you know, be of my close family friends and make
sure I'm just here taking a break.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
That you don't feel bad that you're going to be
playing for the rival club up the road at the
start of the new season. That doesn't consume you were
tall Alex.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
I will always be grateful and you know, appreciative of
the way to finish because they've given me an opportunity
at the end of the day to give me my
first pro contract. So it's going to be it's gonna
be great. But at the same time, and I'm a professional,
I want to make sure that you know, uphelding my
standards and my expectations of being a goalkeeper so that
I can perform to my abilities.

A new club in the A League, the second one
only in New Zealand, and now you're competing with Wellington.
That's a great space to be and you must be
really looking forward to the start of the season and
this club that's been well, it's been put to get
a very very fast nice to be an into an
integral part of that, Alex.

I'm just excited to be with Auganacy and I can't
wait to and I'm obviously looking forward to the start
of the season.

And tell us a little bit about your Olympic campaign
and what did that do for you as far as
increasing your abilities and what you learned out of that.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Yeah, like it was, it was fantastic. I was able
to play against some of the best talents of the game,
and I was just I'm very, very grateful for the
opportunity and I'm grateful to you know, take some take
some learning courts from a couple of those games, and
you know, take into my game as well.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
And one last thing, when do you actually start pulling
boots on, pulling your gloves on, start practicing. Are you
in there pretty much immediately?
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Yep, yep. So I'll be yeah, I'm gonna, you know,
obviously soak up this swecial occasion for you know, myself
and my family and my you know, close family friends
